JahMan1:
Waow!
This thread is really friendly and humbling today with all the experiences being shared.
Leat me humbly share mine.
Starting from the advertisement: Someone sent me the advert to share on a forum where I belong as an admin. He mentioned that those who successfully apply should send their reference number through me so he can check for shortlist. He asked me to also apply now - days after. I told him I never opened the site as I wasn't aware the vacancies cover my level/age. He encouraged me to check them. I checked and saw few management level vacancies in my area of specialization but was going to ignore it for being an entry level management cadre. He encouraged me to just apply for it and ignore. In the process of checking them closely I found out the requirement of 18 years minimum experience. Waow! That's serious post for them. Well I applied.
Another battle began when they invited me to write an aptitude test. How? For a management level job? No serious multinational will do that, I thought. Again my guy and my spouse encouraged me to just go and write the test. May I say here that I can't remember the last time I wrote an aptitude test. When I was the age of majority of you guys I was writing aptitude tests for fun and confident to be in top 5% in any one of such tests. But these days I am more concerned on leadership styles that can motivate my teams/unit to be actively engaged to deliver superior performance, and definitely fat bonuses for ourselves.
Well, I went for the test and it wasn't funny being disarmed of my phone and watch, and all. But I appreciated that thoroughness by NNPC. Was the test cheap? I can't say. I can't say I smashed it or that I banged it. The questions on history was somehow;
American civil war was about what?
Oil was first discovered in Nigeria which year?
Mobil started operation in Nigeria what year?
Economic Recovery Plan was which year?
And several other funny history questions.
Then the quantitative questions that should be my fortress wasn't really straightforward. Some of the questions were solved and I was sure the best option that I chose was wrong. ETC
Again it came as a surprise not just that I was invited for an interview, but at the speed they collated the test results.
I could have complained that the interview wasn't scheduled for Lagos or via skype, teleconference, etc, but I gave them some kudos that they at least scheduled it on a Saturday.
Well, the interview proper didn't look like the normal interview that I am used to at the multinational where I work. I have sat severally as a chairman in such interviews and I know how we drill prospective employees with practical questions they can hardly pass by reading up theories. And we take a whole day to interview at most 6 candidates for a job.
I was shocked to be grouped to see the same panel that interviewed a prospective senior officer, a supervisor, and possibly a GT in my area of specialization. Is that how they intend to employ a management staff by not bringing in the direct supervisor (senior management staff) in that area?
So I wasn't surprised with the questions they asked me.
1. First they asked me a question about a process in my functional area but not my specialized area. I gave a vivid description of the process and pointed out to them which specialized unit handle it in my place of work and where I come in in the process.
2. They asked about a second question that bothers about JV and periodic reviews. I answered that pointing out what I do currently at my current place of work and what I will possibly do at NNPC.
3. The chairman asked a question on how I will handle my specialized task within a subsidiary of NNPC. That was answered.
4. A question on conflict resolution with my boss - answered.
5. Two questions on safety - give an example of when I was involved in safety concern in the office and my reaction. Second was on what I should see when entering a building to show the seriousness of the organisation with safety.
6. Back to the chairman, who heaved a huge sigh. Made a comment like from xx(Name of my company)xx to NNPC. What do you know about PIB. Well I told him I followed the discussion for a very long time and I even downloaded the proposed act. But I have been told the version I have may not be the latest and it's been changed to PIGB. He asked me to mention the things in my version, and I listed like 4 key things and he seemed satisfied and then asked me to tell him the full meaning of PIB/PIGB, which I humbly did.
They thanked me and signaled the end of the interview and asked if I had any question. I was surprised - no drilling, no sweating. No wahala, I just asked a simple question after commending them on the speed of the recruitment exercise and left. It equally came as a pleasant surprise that I quickly got a 20k credit alert from them. That may be nothing but it's a good gesture, having paid twice for the ticket I used for the journey.
So it's either they give me the job, and I will check the pay my guys said will be better than what I earn currently, the kind of official car they give, other benefits, etc, and then make a choice. Or the way the interview went so quickly they decide not to give me the job. In that case I won't have to worry to make a tough decision to leave my present job and prospects.
Overall, I have prayed and whichever outcome is certainly what God wants for me and the future will prove that.
God bless you all.

My heart syill skips a beat whenever I recall my interview encounter. The first question threw me off balance the way you feel when you are scored an early goal in a football final. I still have shivers. The chief panelist just held up his book of riddles and asked me one as if we had a personal grudge. I was like " oga, haba mana, youre supposed to ask me to tell you about myself now? undecided this is not how star do!".
Anyways i never really recovered and the interview was over before it started. just 5 minutes or so! I have moved on anyways, but the little faith in me tells me to hang on by a thread: the race is never always to the swift. On the brighter side. I dressed as required, got my HSE and behavioural and situational questions. Lets just wait for August wink.

All the best guys

I applied as an experienced hire, supervisor level. My panel guys were very mean, curt and I really never expererrit. They were really restive and ready to cut my neck at every opportunity. I even regretted going for the interview esp when I remembered the over 60k I spent on return flights and accommodation embarassed. A little advice to help you do better: FORGET EVERYTHING THEY TELL YOU ON NL!!! grin

My only consolation is I now truly believe that when its your turn to get a job, everything will fall in place despite all odds. For me, I've kind of lost hope...success guys

PS: just FYI, all the sweet boys association chairmen and pinging ladies association charladies were all present grin grin grin They will intimidate you with their dressing and big big english. But, dont be perturbed, your journey is different and you are unique in your own way wink

SUCCESS

For me I think giving CBT test questions after you finish writing to others who have not written is quite naive, but sharing your interview experience is a totally different ball game al together. Like Gbyms said, that some one said they asked me " tell me about yourself" or they gave me water and stuff doesnt reduce your chances in anyway. common guys life is not that deep. If you want to share, please share,if you don't want, skip the thread. I wish you all luck.
Ironically, the only competition you have is aginst your village people, because your actually up against them. Literary grin

My wife doesn't have any job yet.
Who told you she doesnt have a job yet? Do you know that being a house wife (esp if one is a graduate) is a FULL time job of its own without pay, salary increase, break or annual leave? I do not make excuses for her but you need to remove your mind from her not working. She works.
However me thinks its a family habit, work with her to strike a compromise, else count your losses and eat out till she gets the message or make your food for yourself. I'm even trying to thread that path sef.

As for those air heads asking you to get a divorce, y'all need to get married first, this gist is PG28 (marrried commentors only!) grin

As for the original post, the Govt official didn't do right. As a public officer, he should have twitted his complaints to the company's official complaints twiiter handle and not to malign them, despite he has verifiable grievances. This is simply because we are trying to encourage the populace from buying made in Nigeria goods, We will get there someday. Toyota and Mercedez didnt start today

Very detailed and explicit tho wink
EducationRe: 10 Reasons Why You Should NEVER Go For Postgraduate Studies - EDUREGARD by TheMatrix3: 3:16pm On Jun 23, 2016
The mere fact that this post didnt get many likes or views show that most Nigerian youths have the graduate-and-get-a-good-job mindset. Sorry to burst your bubbles: that time don pass. Young people should learn to provide services and create their own wealth by thinking. Any PG you do that doesnt develop this, but you just do to get a better job is just a try-your-luck. Your first degree is a good launching pad to get a job, get capital, create wealth and attempt to retire by 40 years

sad Sad story. But when will you learn? Even those who have jobs are losing it, being retrenched almost everyday. And yet people are still coming with BIG degrees feeling as if the society OWES THEM a job just because you have a big degree. With his field of expertise and professional training, there's a lot he could do for himself with it. But they'll never learn. Many are still going out to get BIGGER AND BIGGER degrees and then come back DEMANDING for a job!

When are you going to get it into your head, WHAT WE NEED NOW ARE SKILLS AND ENTREPRENEURS, People who CREATE JOBS not people who are looking for jobs. We don't need BIG DEGREES anymore. We need BIG SKILLS and JOB CREATORS
This cant be said enough... Ironically so many pipu here advicing him to start a business and open a farm, are looking for better jobs and no one is quitting to start a farm grin

One more very important trick: You can check if your remote control is working.
Simply switch on your camera and look at the remote control censor with the camera. If the remote is good, the censor blinks when ever you press any button (this is invisible to the naked eyes)
This is a quick way yo know when you need e new remote wink
