FlyboyZee: The rationale NOI (FG) IMHO is trying to adopt is a simple economic model.
Create scarcity in order to increase market demand which would in turn stimulate production so that producers would strive to supply so much as to fill the vacuum created by the scarcity, hence creating employment, revenue, specialization, etc... It's still the same we're saying bro...its d aggressive path which we know doesn't work for Nigeria...mention any which has...removal of subsidy? None has worked..slow & steady always wins d race... The agricultural reform was only a huge success because we already had enough farm produce(alternative), we just needed the ban to enforce its acceptability. Not where we're even lacking in d adequate wherewithal to Manufacture coupled with few alternatives. Such a policy is dead on arrival bro. |

FlyboyZee: Well! Well!! Well!!! As far as I can remember, the Nigerian Government has been announcing this auto policy fir sometime now, shifting and shifting the proposed date of implementation so that people can adjust. Rather than adjusting, we are there casting aspersions and throwing blames on refineries, gas plants, electricity supply and the baba himself, CORRUPTION. All I'm saying is that even in the face of all these daunting challenges, we cannot get to el dorado before creating a paradise for ourselves. We have to create our own paradise by sacrifices, hard work, perseverance and belt-tightening in order to achieve el dorado.
Almost all brand new Hondas and Toyotas we buy and use in Nigeria are manufactured in South Africa. Our youths then pursue these jobs we have succeeded in creating in South Africa to South Africa and they start killing us there that we are taking over their jobs. If we start assembly/manufacturing of cars, the market available to SA would diminish, jobs there to would diminish and our youths may not face xenophobic attacks in SA because we would have succeeded in creating more jobs and market for reasonable enterprise to thrive. I'm speaking from the view point of a development economist... As a development Economist I will fault this method of yours with all due respect for the reasons I've just stated...its just like starving yourself to achieve an aim financially. One may not be alive to witness its frution...imagine the accidents, untold & unnecessary hardship people will experience as a backlash of such policy....

You are right by saying Nigeria has been announcing the auto policy shift...but thats all they do...they'll only announce policies that'll unsettle ppl but do nothing to mitigate such effects thats why people will continue to cast aspersions as to dr lack of "Ubuntu" in ALL dr policies..... Asking for alternative & adequate means of transportation to be fully on ground which is actually ongoing with the railway transformation (even tho they still embezzled funds to buy old school 2nd hand locomotives); functioning refineries to power our gas plants while the Manufacturing goes on is not too much to ask-so its no el dorado...its just the logical & humane thing any responsible & mature government will do. Someone talked about Rickety danfoes & molues ppl will have to resort to...even the BRTs will become congested & overwhelmed... You made mention of just 12v of electricity for Production, I dunno how feasible that is as what I know is dat Manufacturing of such dimension will require a great deal of electricity. After the right things av been put in place to a considerable degree then we can fully implement the ban which will be most welcomed & won't be met with much resistance as it is now. Lets learn to do the Right things the Right way. |

FlyboyZee: I bow for Nigerians o. Na we go first run go South Africa, say things no dey work for Naija... Na we go first run go dry UK, say things are difficult in Naija... Na we go first emigrate to US, say life no be am for Naija...
Now, come to think of it... If the Americans, the Britons and the South Africans had run away from their countries when things were hard, difficult, bad and unbearable, do you think they would have achieved the kind of societies, economies or development they have today?
At the end of every dark tunnel, there is light. Day breaks after the darkest hours of the night. Similarly, like those countries we are so quick to mention in order to score our beloved country low and portray our development in bad light. We have to stay back in our country to strive and fight to make things work by all means.
In my humble submission, we had it good back in the days when we were assembling cars in the country, there were good auto mechanics and electricians all around, second hand value of Nigerian-used cars were very good, body work and paint jobs were excellent, there was high accessibility to OEM parts, there was some local manufacturing of certain auto consumables such as batteries, brake pads, fluids, etc. During this period, electricity was also not stable and enough, Nigeria has been synonymous with bad roads since time immemorial, we had the same crop of leaders we are still recycling today, yet it was closer to Utopia.
Then, we moved on to the importation era (in which most of you against this new auto policy were born or came to know your left different from your right), where you feel we need all the electricity in Japan and US combined together just to run an assembly plant robot that could needs only 6 or 12v, where you reason that we could import cars both new and used for use on our bad roads, but needs to wait for good roads to be built first before we start assembling cars, where we have over 10 variants (fakes) ranging from Japan specs, American specs, China, Taiwan, etc for just one auto part, where good mechanics has become synonymous with scarcity, where ordinary everyday's auto fluids have become something you travel to another Town or City to buy, where body work and paint jobs seems like sending your vehicle to hell and back. Where Kazeems have become lords and know every vehicle more than its manufacturer. It is really a pity that we got to this stage.
And now, looking at the 2 scenarios, it is only logical and rational that the Government return back to the former ways as soon as possible, which is far better than the current import based system. But, alas! here we are complaining and proffering suggestions that would keep us forever in the doldrums and perpetually tie us to the apron strings of the so-called developed economies. Which way Nigeria? It is really a pity that Nigerian youths are reasoning like this. If we keep reasoning like these guys have been doing up here, then there is no hope for this country. We would continue to suffer, suffer and suffer even more... Bro I feel every bit of what you saying, nobody is saying we shouldn't produce...what we're saying is we shouldn't be so fast to close our borders just yet...drastic & aggressive actions usually end up with huge consequences. I beg to differ where you said we didn't have good electricity during our oeriodnof assembling vehicles...our Refineries were most likely in top shape then which would have provided enough gas to produce Electricity not now that they're all defunct...China that are sudden Manufacturing giants borrowed less money from IMF than we did and they have a world class working Power plant today. We on the other hand have been seeing our Refinery repair as a means for each incoming govt to embezzle money...as I said the repair & functionality of our Refineries alone will solve Nigeria's problems by 15% if not more...but the cabals will never allow it...some ppls wealth come from d continued dilapidation of those refineries. And now they wanna increase the burden by adding manufacturing to it....then population of Nigeria during assembling era that needed electricity can't be compared to today where almost every tom, dick & harry needs it. What should be done is to allow the importation continue & gradually infuse the Nigerian made cars into the market system then use that time to begin providing alternate means of transportation for people the policy might not favour and then when this is done they can go for the kill by shutting the borders...this is what a government that really cares for its people will do...life has gotten more sophisticated than doing things in a drastic & aggressive manner...things dont work that way man... |

Travel › Re: 10 Things Nigerians Are Doing Better Than Other Africans by themodernman: 10:59pm On Apr 19, 2015 |
wallflower: Nigeria, “the giant of Africa” may be far from perfect but there are certain things we do much better than other Africans. Even though, these are facts, the reality on the ground is that Nigeria is way ahead of some African countries. With our pulsating entertainment scene and the economy growth – ( Nigeria has the largest economy in Africa ), we can make a case for ‘African exceptionalism”. Although, Nigeria is confronting some major challenges, we are still standing out in Africa. There is something special about Nigerians that you can hardly miss; it is just difficult to ignore us because we are full of life and drama at the same time.
Below are 10 things Nigerians are doing better than other Africans:
1. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
Nigerians have good business culture. We are accustomed to developing with new business ideas, creating small and large business organizations, from technology to entertainment. We bring in diverse perspectives to Nigerian business methods, we know how to interact and connect with investors and business partners within and outside Nigeria, as we position ourselves for greater success. No wonder, the country is the economic power-house in Africa; it is a base for business innovation and distinction.
2. WORK HARD, PLAY HARD
Nigerians work hard, and play hard. If you are looking for people who work so hard and never feel the pain, talk about Nigerians. The beautiful thing about us ––we are smart. We know how to work effectively and get great results through short cuts. You must have heard a lot of myths about Nigerians, some of these stories are true when it comes to cutting corners. We like to hustle and wrestle our ways to success.
3. LIVING LIFE TO IT'S FULLEST
Even as the ancient may have retained its grip over the lives of Nigerians in terms of culture and tradition, many have embraced the future, maintaining a laissez-faire attitude toward living life to its fullest. Nigerians understand that life is to be lived once and they get crazy with gadgets, cars, partying and socializing. The fun never ends even during funeral services.
4. EXCITING ENTERTAINMENT SCENE - BEST IN AFRICA
Nigerians are good in producing the finest movies in Africa. According to Wikipedia, “Nollywood is the second largest film industry in the world” and of course, the largest in Africa. Gone are the days when Nigerians make movies that do not make sense in quality and storyline. Some of the current movies that are produced by Nigerians can compete with some Hollywood movies even though most of these movies may not compete favourable in budget and spending but they are just amazing.
5. NIGERIANS CREATE WEALTH FROM MUNDANE THINGS
There is hardly a niche in the world where a Nigerian does not have power and influence. The quest to be the best has always been the backbone of our successful story. A lot of Nigerians started their stories from nothing and ended up as gurus in different industries. We strongly believe in the slogan ‘No condition is permanent’ – We go make am one day!
6. WE LOVE COLLECTIBLES -WE KNOW HOW IT WORKS
Maybe you have not heard that some Nigerians are buying some of the most costly buildings on the world’s most expensive street in London -Edgerton Crescent. It is not only in London that this love for luxury properties can be seen. Nigerians love showing off and buying these expensive properties around the world is simply one of the ways of expressing this lifestyle. With all the education, hard work, risk taking and smart investing, Nigerians love to live large and enjoy the finer things in life. Spend it if you’ve got it!
7. REAL SURVIVORS
We are everywhere, from London to New York. You can see us on the streets of New York struggling to sell CDs to make sure that we send money home. There is hardly a harsh economic terrain in the world where a Nigerian cannot survive. It is one trait that makes us exceptional in Africa.
8. LITERARY GEMS
Should we start calling names? Nigerians have a lot of writers since the days of Chinua Achebe who made a landmark in the literary world. Nigerians have gifted hands like Wole Soyinka, Chika Unigwe, Chimamanda Adichie and Helon Habila who are making waves around the world. It is not that there no other African writers who are doing great, there are so many but sure Nigerians does the literary thing better. Not to forget the new trend of blogging. (We no dey carry last!)
9. WE MAKE THINGS HAPPEN
Foreigners and other Africans give the thumbs up to Nigerians for always transforming dull and boring scenes to exciting ones. There is this thing about Nigerians that give them the ability to make things happen. From music, comedy to fashion, even our sense of humour is unique and that is why we are so different. Little wonder, thousands visit Nigeria during vacations or festivals to see and enjoy our exciting events and activities.
10. NIGERIANS TAKE THEIR DEMANDS TO THE STREETS
There is nothing that Nigerians would not protest these days, it is either they are fighting for the government to increase their salaries, demand for justice or cut down the fuel pump price. These protests always put our issues on the political agenda. The streets and the internet has become our warfronts and the pages of blogs are where we lash out their anger on anything displeasing. Nigerians have perfected the act of going for protest and they are never too shy to go public with their grievances.
You can see why we say that Nigerians can do certain things better than other Africans, the list is inconclusive and we would leave you to add to the list with your comments.
www.travelstart.com.ng/blog/10-things-nigerians-are-doing-better-than-other-africans/ This is why Nigeria must not split. Only that the Igboz are hell bent on leaving thats why they keep disgracing Nigeria & honestly I don't see their usefulness. |

Health › Re: WHO Blames Pesticide For ‘mysterious Deaths’ In Nigerian Town by themodernman: 2:54pm On Apr 19, 2015 |
dridowu: *WHO scientists say not angry god behind strange deaths in Ode-Irele
Pesticide poisoning was the likely cause of the mysterious deaths of at least 18 people in a southwestern Nigerian town earlier this week, the World Health Organization said Sunday.
The “current hypothesis is cause of the event is herbicides”, WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl said in a Tweet.
“Tests done so far are negative for viral and bacterial infection,” he added.
The victims began showing symptoms early last week in what Ondo state spokesman Kayode Akinmade called a “mysterious disease”, prompting fears of a new infectious disease outbreak in a region ravaged by Ebola.
The victims, whose symptoms included headache, weight loss, blurred vision and loss of consciousness, died within a day of falling ill in the town of Ode-Irele, in southwestern Ondo state. The Ondo state health commissioner, Dayo Adeyanju, told AFP Saturday that 23 people had been affected.
Akinmade said health officials and experts from the government and aid agencies, as well as WHO epidemiologists, had arrived in Ode-Irele to investigate the deaths.
The tests were carried out at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, the WHO said. A high chief of the town had attributed the deaths to the anger of the god of Molokun.
High Chief Moses Enimade, next in command to Oba Cornelius Olanrewaju-Lebi, debunked the rumour that the deaths were caused by strange disease or Ebola virus.
No fewer than 20 youths reportedly died of severe headaches and blindness in the town recently. Enimade contended that some stubborn youths broke into the inner room of Molokun Shrine on April 15.
“Molokun is a deity of the land, only the Chief Priest and High Chief Gboguron are qualified to enter the shrine.’’
The chief said the youths entered the shrine and made away with traditional items in a bid to acquire extra-ordinary powers and engage in money ritual. “They were not qualified to enter the room (shrine). They had to face death penalty’’; he emphasised. “Because these youths want to be rich at all costs, they entered the sacred place and made away with traditional items and 20 of them have died as a result of their desperate acts,
“We have to appease the gods or else many will still die and we have to bury them according to tradition. Their corpses belong to the gods and will be exhumed if buried by their families.’’
