And he was damn honest about his state of mind. He emphasized that last year he wanted to leave, but that this year he wanted to stay and that was why it was painful for him. Well you are somehow right. Laporta was faced between the option of Superleague and Messi and basically chose the Superleague.

Strictly from a strategic business point of view, I think he made the right decision because Superleague will favor Barca financially and quality-wise in the long run while Messi is more of a short-term prospect at 34. As a fan though, Laporta might have been a Judas in this whole saga. However, I believe that initially, he genuinely thought he could keep Messi (which is why he brought in Aguero) and still go ahead with Superleague until Javier Tebas forced his hands to chose between the two.
