oruma19: OP, u must be a stranger in Nigeria to think this is a mistake. Leave dat mata abegiiii, most schools in the south west wether federal or state do not like to admit students from the Niger Delta. I know what i am talking about. They deliberately did what they did to make it look like the student wasn't qualified but the real reason is tribalism. I schooled in the West and I know what we passed thru to be able to come out in one piece. Yoruba people are "majorly" tribalistic. That is no news and does not make the Ibos and Hausas better off, the difference is tphat the hausas are a bit mild in there show of tribalism and if peradventure u speak their language, they accept u more. the girl is from delta state. and yes, she is already a student of OAU. studying medical rehabilitation. you see ehn, delta and bayelsa students association are one of the biggest associations in OAU. they used to hold their weekly meetings at Fajuyi Hall back when I was in Ife. I even remember asari dokubo delivering a lecture at one of their events. pls, stop spreading falsehood in the name of tribalism. |

If she she truly deserves to be given medicine, they should change her course abeg, except of course, she bluntly refuses. she made a mistake in uploading her waec results. she uploaded only 7 subjects. that's why she fell short its a pity given she has a very good result. but at least she has the med rehab to fall back on. |

I don't understand why you guys are calculating 8 subjects for her. I understand the outrage. her results are exceptional. But she made a mistake in the transcript she submitted. She is already a student in the School sef...studying medical rehab. She can try again if she still has the motivation to study medicine. You guys should stop beating a dead horse |

BraniacX: I have been around my friend though i don't expect you to take my word for this, the examples you gave do not invalidate my statistics. Yes i said ife was an institution affected by tribalism but i also said it was less so compared to majority of the schools around Nigeria and i used uniben as a gold standard of some sort not because it is totally detribalised or because i studied there but because in comparism to other schools i've been to, uniben and unilag are the most diverse ethnically, unilag for obvious reasons, uniben for the fact that their merit list remains untainted by any other consideration to the best of my knowledge (I can still be proven wrong of course). In my time i applied to ife and uniben in different years and gained admission into different courses in both, i turned down a couple of admissions in my time because maybe i was a bit conceited and arrogant believing i was very brilliant and admissions came to me easier than other people or because i was kind of pampered and sheltered with my parents more invested in me going to school than i was but point is, during the admissions search i got around and though uniben was never my choice, i was basically bribed/coerced to take up that admission and i look back at my wasted years with regrets i also got to learn about many back doors to gaining admission into Nigerian universities and i'm saying point blank that there's tribalism in ife's admission, at least there was back then ok |

Feel free to disagree of course of course I will disagree. we are talking about the university of ife which once had prof Cyril Onwumechili as vice chancellor. how many uni's in other parts of the country have had VC's from ethnic groups that aren't theirs? of the students that were tragically killed in the cultists attack that changed ife forever, eviano ekelemo, efe ekede and Godfrey ekpede were not Yoruba. this guys lost their lives for ife to be free of cultists, yet you seem to suggest they were never students of ife. or aren't u saying the school doesnt admit non-yorubas? if you're going to accuse an institution of tribalism....it shouldn't be ife. or any school in the south west for that matter. Education › Re: Provost Of Health Sciences Oau Gives Reasons Why Mrs Aror Wasnt Admitted by thinkative: 11:57pm On Dec 22, 2016 |
toothyGrin: Nonsense!
First of all, the provost does not know his basic arithmetic. Those grades he listed amounts to 50 points for 8 subjects. Now he repeated physics (where she scored her lowest) twice instead of adding the 8th subject. So her points should be somewhere above 50, which would give her at least 78.13% for O'level and 80% for UTME. On aggregate with that score, she'd turn out to score 79% which is above their cut off.
Then he said she ranked 103 on the list of those who chose medicine as first choice (based on her wrongly calculated scores). In the same breath he added that there are 56 candidates who scored higher than her but didn't make the cut-off. So it means they gave admission to the best 46 candidates and handpicked picked 54 others who didn't rank as high as 103.
Shame on this provost who doesn't know basic arithmetic! Shame on these Nigerian universities. regarding the ranking. she ranked 103 among the jambites. 100 students were admitted in all for medicine. but those 100 were not all jambites. direct entry admissions were included. ur logic here does not take the direct entries into consideration. and I don't think its nice to call the provost names. he should be applauded for showing concern (if its really is true that the reply is from him). most university dons I know wouldn't care a hoot cos they know there's nothing anyone can do about it in this Godforsaken country! |

Post The merit and catchment list of oau admission process this year on this group and i won't talk again. If not i am not buying your propanganda.
I still insist that The girl should have been admitted to study medicine because i nothing less than 6 candidates that didn't have up to 66 point and yet they were admitted for medicine I left ife in 2013. and as at then I remember helping folks check their names on the admission list at the senate. regarding the girl's case. I'm not so dumb that I would claim that the whole admission process in ife is whiter than snow. I know cases of lecturers 'helping' people into the list. however, I insist that u stand more chance of gaining admission into ife on merit than most universities in Nigeria. UI too |

Tribalism in highest order sorry. this has nothing to do with tribalism! competition for courses like medicine, law and accounting is very high. the school is relatively cheap (I paid 5300 per session to study accounting btw 2008 and 2013). coupled with the prestige, competition can lead to cases like this. I met lots of people from all over Nigeria at ife. even Ghanaians and people from Cameroon. I was taught by lecturers from different Nigerian tribes. The school is a melting pot of cultures. |

Vcojuro: Smh there are lots of candidates that didn't meet up to the cutoff point for the department of Medicine, and yet they were admitted. If you have any doubt go to the various department and check if the admission process is really transparent as they claim to be. I will challenge the school management to paste the list of admitted students on daily newspapers and school websites. That's how it's done in the University of Ibadan and this will give no room for manipulation. Ife also pastes admission list like Ibadan. the admission process is relatively transparent. I can vouch for that. I gained admission in 2008 to read accounting. most people found it hard to believe that I knew no lecturer. in fact, I had only stepped foot in the school once before my admission...for post utme |

But its like you said, she's a public figure so i guess that explains it I think you shouldn't let the hype about makinwa and the book cloud your judgement about the book. I'm not a fan of hers. The only time I heard her speak, I wasn't impressed. but I will read her book. You see, the thing with books is that they are packed with knowledge. knowledge you gain from the author. and knowledge you've always had but never knew u had. u even gain knowledge by disagreeing with the author. you're not expected to nod ur head and concur with every line. I remember reading Obasanjo's 'my watch' and quickly realizing how self-absorbed and egoistic the man was. While i found the book to be a pathetic ego trip, I still learnt a lot about the man and how easy it was to stumble upon the presidential seat in Nigeria. Crucially, I learnt I was not as good a judge of character as I thought I was! 6 Likes 1 Share |

I expected the Yoruba guys chasing after Igbo girls narrative.
But I think it goes beyond that. I think its more about liberalism and a threshold of respect for other people, irrespective of tribe.
Yorubas are very liberal. You find an extended family of Muslims and Christians. All on talking terms. There is nothing like Osu or almajiri. There are lots of Hausa street beggars in my area and I have never seen an Igbo person give one of em a dime. But because there are Yoruba Muslims and Islam casts a good light on alms giving, I see Yoruba's give them money everyday. The couple might have met in church for all we know. We all know how hard it is to meet an Hausa in church in Lagos or Enugu.
It's good sha. Nigeria needs it Wishing the couple a happy married life |
