Politics › Abuja Airport: How Julius Berger Saved Nigeria From Embarrassment by three(op): 5:01pm On Apr 22, 2017
By Igho Akeregha, Abuja Bureau Chief | 20 April 2017 | 4:27 am

Public anxiety was finally allayed on Tuesday April 17, 2017 as the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja was reopened for normal operations two days ahead of schedule, beating the six weeks project deadline given by the Federal government to its contractors, Julius Berger Plc.

The Nigerian government, through the Minister of state for Aviation, Hadi Sirika had given Julius Berger six weeks to complete the emergency rehabilitation of the existing runway and main taxiways to restore the integrity of the airport. As a leading Nigerian construction company, the company has revealed how it was able to fulfill the most demanding requirements for this technical projects of immense socio-economic magnitude. The completed runway was handed over to the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN on April 18, 2017, with airport operations resuming shortly thereafter.

To realize the program of works within the highly challenging timeframe, Julius Berger, through its Head, Media Relations said it pooled its resources, mobilizing equipment, highly skilled specialists and technical teams from across its operational hubs in Nigeria to achieve a record breaking pace of work. “The 400-person strong site team worked around the clock at various stages to complete the milling of 175,000m2 of asphalt and subsequent re-laying of 56,200 tons of new asphalt, at a speed of 4,600 tons per day at peak performance, as well as the installation of 82,300m2 of special fiber glass grid for asphalt reinforcement and the renewal of the runway lighting and markings”.

The company noted that while the construction itself was intensive, project challenges began long before the first machines started their engines. Thorough design studies, seamless planning, scheduling and logistical coordination were all essential aspects of the meticulously planned time schedule. Julius Berger’s global resource network ensured fast track procurement and shipping of 160 tons of project related materials via a fully chartered Boeing 747 cargo plane as well as four additional cargo flights, which together , with the sourcing of materials domestically, ensured prompt delivery of required materials to site, making what many thought was impossible, possible.

Some Aviation stakeholders have commended the speed with which the work was delivered while the company explained that the timely rehabilitation of the runway and main Taxiways was realized due to its robust planning capacities, expansive equipment fleet, leading technical knowhow, proactive problem solving and highly skilled staff. “Thanks to the support of suppliers and subcontractors as well as the professional cooperation of the Federal Ministry of Transport, the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria and the Special Project Implementation Committee of the Federal Government, which was ably headed by His Excellency, the Vice President Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN” Duku said.

Julius Berger was awarded the contract to repair the existing 3.6 km runway and main taxiways, which were extensively deteriorated with aged asphalt, wide alligator cracking, shear deformation and widespread pothole formation. To repair the runway and taxiways as a monolithic structure and ensure a quality solution that would extend the runway’s lifespan, the airport was shut down for six weeks, with flights diverted to Kaduna Airport.

Throughout the entire construction period, Julius Berger’s acclaimed international quality assurance and control processes were strictly adhered to, guaranteeing consistency in quality of asphalt production and general works. Compliance with Health, safety and environmental procedures resulted in an incident free work place, supporting both the safety of staff and also the efficiency of operations, with zero loss of time due to injury.

Nasir El-RufaiIn a statement released by the special adviser (media) to the embattled governor, Samuel Aruwan, owners of the publication would be taken to court.

The statement reads: "After a busy few weeks as governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai is dismayed by the blatant falsehood being practised as journalism by The Union newspapers. Lagos State Government treats income generated within it the same way the indigenes of the Niger-delta treat the oil found within their various states.

Ironically, the various Lagos State Governors and functionaries have not spoken in support of derivation from solid minerals.

They on one hand enjoy monies received from the Niger-delta and still want to exclusively enjoy monies generated within Lagos State.

Politics › Gov. Ajimobi Appoints Brother LG Caretaker Chairman - VANGUARD by three(op):
By Ola Ajayi OLAMIJU,

One of the sons of ex-governor of Oyo State, Otunba Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala and Teslim, one of the brothers of the state governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, have been included in the new list of Local Government Caretaker Committee Chairmen recently sent to the state’s House of Assembly. The list which was announced during the Assembly’s plenary on Tuesday also included the name of Prince Lana, one of the children of the immediate past Olubadan of Ibadanland, late Oba Samuel Odugade Odulana.

The crisis within the ruling All Progressives Congress over appointment of education secretaries, a list of caretaker chairmen for 33 councils and additional Local Council Development Areas sent to the state House of Assembly and members of Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission is gradually returning the pacesetter state to its ugly past when the state was tagged the hotbed of political hooliganism.

The bloody clash which erupted on Monday was between two visible factions within the party who are sympathetic to Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State and a former state leader of the party, Late Alhaji Lamidi Adesina.

According to information gathered, preference was given to supporters of the governor who allegedly formed 97 per cent of the whole list. Among those that benefitted from the list of caretaker chairmen are the former governor of the state, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala whose son, Olamijuwonlo is to become the caretaker chairman of Ogbomoso North, former Olubadan of Ibadanland, late Oba Samuel Odulana, Prince Gbade Lana and also the governor’s brother, Alhaji Teslim Ajimobi.

It appears as Mr. Adeyanju inferred that Mr. Oke was 'working' for Jonathan.

Insightful to note that Mr. Adeyanju also infers that Mr. Oke was a 'double agent' (maybe why he was retained)

it is arguable that a lot of GEJ appointees that retained their posts in the face of APC protests against same may have been 'covertly' working for GMB.

NIGERIA ELECTIONS 2015 didn't really present any viable options - it was either GEJ or PMB (both hugely lacking in capacity) one or two other candidates 'sounded' technical but it appears Nigerians love 'popular' candidates and would rather not 'waste' votes on persons whom they believe will not win.

Bottom line is holding PMB to task and preparing for 2019.

Politics › Nigeria’s Chattering Classes: Poverty And Denial In Africa - ROAPE.net by three(op): 8:34am On Apr 20, 2017
By Remi Adekoya

During a recent trip spent travelling across Nigeria, a banker friend of mine advised me to “keep things positive” if I ever shared my observations in “western media”. I pointed out Nigeria is currently in dire economic straits; many civil servants haven’t received a salary this year, pensions are going unpaid, people are struggling to feed their families and children are actually starving to death in the country’s north-east. “Writing about it won’t help those people. And you know negative western media stories on Africa only make these white folk and others look down on us,” my friend replied. Over the years, I’ve heard similar sentiments expressed by numerous middle- and upper-class Nigerians. In fact, it is an attitude I’ve observed amongst better-off Africans in general.

When it comes to western media coverage of Africa, the continent’s privileged classes are usually more concerned with the perceptions created than with the realities depicted. They find images of suffering Africans annoying because these “perpetuate negative stereotypes” by “portraying Africa as a poor and backward continent.” The actual suffering being depicted rarely elicits as much outrage as the fact it is being exposed for the world to see.

Meanwhile, whenever I chatted with regular Nigerians, once they heard I’m a journalist (in Europe), they’d say something like: “Make sure people over there know we are suffering here,” or “Let them know how bad things are in Nigeria, someone needs to talk to our government.” The last worry on their mind was how Nigeria’s image might suffer in the process.

It is middle-class intellectuals and the political or business elite who love to complain about how Africa is “misrepresented” in western media, not the poor and oppressed who are the subject of that reporting. But the privileged classes resent seeing Africa’s widespread poverty on display. Instead, they demand “balanced media coverage”. That sounds perfectly reasonable, but what exactly do they mean?

For instance, 62.6% of Nigerians currently live in poverty, compared to 27.2% in 1980. Yet for some Nigerians, “balanced media coverage” amounts to talking up the latest individual success story as evidence “not all Africans are poor and suffering” and that the country is “making progress”. But what kind of progress sees the percentage of people living in poverty more than double since 1980? It is countries like China, India or Brazil who have reduced poverty levels significantly in recent decades that have the right to speak of progress, yet some Nigerians will insist media show the “positives” in a country where poverty has ballooned in the same period.

A 2015 Pew Research survey revealed sub-Saharan Africa as a whole has made the least progress among all developing regions toward reducing extreme poverty since 1990. The percentage of people living on less than $1.25 a day in the region currently stands at 41%, more than twice as high as any other region in the world (Southern Asia comes next at 17%). Of course, inconvenient statistics can always be brushed aside.

In 2014 the World Bank reported that Nigeria had the third highest number of poor people in the world. The then president Goodluck Jonathan bristled at the suggestion, saying: “If you talk about ownership of private jets, Nigeria will be among the first 10 countries, yet they are saying that Nigeria is among the five poorest countries.” Furthermore he pointed out Aliko Dangote, a Nigerian businessman, “was recently classified among the 25 richest people in the world”. Wasn’t this proof Nigerian poverty is grossly exaggerated?

Jonathan’s ludicrous response aptly illustrates the prevalent attitude within the privileged classes. It is a combination of denial bordering on the delusional coupled with a post-colonial complex – emotional responses which attempt to shout down unpleasant statistics and imply that whenever the western world talks of African poverty, the aim is to paint the continent in a bad light.
