This sounds like an excuse. Ajax always playing in a particular way doesn't mean all other teams must play in that manner.

As a footballer, you have to adapt to different circumstances and situations on the pitch. Part of football is understanding your teammates and learning their mannerisms to suit your game to theirs. Martial, for instance, will hardly make a run behind a defender on the wings. If you give him a defence splitting pass in that manner you're just going to waste the ball. Also, Rashford will never make a run behind opposition defenders if he sees an opening and the ball is with McTomminay or Fred. Cos he knows the pass will hardly be accurate. But once it's Pogba, you'll see him sprinting with his heels at the back of his head.

Same with VDB. If you keep passing and immediately making yourself available for a difficult return, vertical pass and no one is giving you the ball , something should tell you to try something else to help the team. Make yourself available for the simple pass.

And he's a midfielder. Primary job is to create. And you will hardly create when you're constantly on the move.

@bolded , even in Netherlands, he barely starts in serious matches. Infact they usually play Wijnaldum as a 10 rather than him because he rarely influences game as an AM. He usually have the least touches in games as if he's a CF

Ole's style is a 4231, I think it's not because of CB problem but that's just his pattern. He's tried 352, 442 and after a while gone back to his 4231. I doubt he will change it for VDB any time soon.

Even before Bruno , when we were shit, he still plays 4231 consistently with Lingard or Perera as the no. 10..

VDB will come good eventually and with time. Coming to EPL and Man utd is a big step up in his career, so he'll need time to adjust. Not every player will be a Bruno. Bruno was an exception and not the Normal. Most players don't kick the ground running immediately in new clubs.

Criticizing VDB for an obvious deficiency in his play is not out of place, it will only make him adjust and iron them out. After all the likes of Fred had worse at the beginning of their United career., similar to VDB because of the step up from a lower league to a big league, now he's fine.

He should not be waiting for those vertical passes all the time. After all somehow the ball gets to Bruno from this same McFred and he makes things happen from there. The problem is with VDB IMO. He should spend less time making runs into the box waiting for vertical passes and more time helping to build up play for others and make those vertical passes himself.

As a 10 he should be creating for Cavani, Rashy, Martial NOT expecting McFred to create for him. Bruno and Pogba pick and choose when to make those runs, he should too.

Let us even forget the lack of McFred vertical passes for a second. What does he do when he gets the ball? He passes it to the nearest man whether it be Fred, AWB, Maguire or DDG. He does not turn and look to see if Rashy or Cavani are making good runs so HE can make vertical passes for them to score. Do you know how many runs by our forwards he has wasted because he refused to turn and look forward with the ball?

He wants McFred to make vertical passes to him, the same vertical passes he refuses to give Cavani and co.

I remember a match like that the he played in, he had the ball for a counter attack, I think Rashy was in the other side with acres of space, instead of my guy to do a diagonal pass, he cut the ball back and passed back , thereby wasting the opportunity. OGS was visibly furious that day. It was the day I concluded that he can't make it playing as a 10. He plays it way to safe for someone that is supposed to be an AM.

He was below the radar with minimal hype and most of the big clubs didn't rate him that much the way they will rate the likes of VDB or De jong as per the he's not a flashy kind of player. For example Bruno averages about 3 long balls a game for us, VDB for his career has averaged just under 1 long ball a game. He is not the one to pass long for Rashy or Martial's runs INSTEAD he wants to make the runs so that McFred can find him with long balls.

Lol. That is because we played counter attacking football while defending using a low block for majority of games last season, so their pace wasn't a problem.

Now that we have more quality and dominate games, high line became inevitable, so they are being exposed left and right, and in addition to the regular odd errors that they make , including De Gea, which has always been there since last season, so it's no surprise that our goal conceeding rate increased astronomically this season. We are only doing better, point wise this season because our attack improved tremendously, so we score more goals.

The same Tuanzebe that got loaned out to Aston Villa that year when they were still in the championship and didn't get much game time, and yet Ole magically believed that he can turn him to prime Nesta. SAF have played CB in full back positions a lot if time. It's nothing new. Those players didn't have a cracking game, but they didn't have a bad game either

Clogging the team up with shitty players and average academy prospect was Enough reason why getting another defender would have been difficult for ole because these guys (Tuanzebe, TFM, Jones , Rojo, Injury prone bailey), were just taking up space. Without offloading majority of them we couldn't get a decent CB in the Summer. Good thing is that we have gotten rid of a lot of them this January. So I'm sure they'll get a CB along side a striker or wingers in the summer.
