Not a good place to work then. When you go for a break your desk/duty should be empty. No one should cover for someone who went for a break because it's a lunch break and you are not expected to be on break and still be working.

That kind place where you go for break and the desk is empty is proper office environment. This is more like a motor park where buses depart every now and then. To get lunch in that kind of condition go hard without having someone cover for you which is what he did. The place is not just the right place to work or management was looking for flimsy excuses to sack in order to downsize like OP rightly said.

The article says he has a distribution network of over 100 hawkers. So 1m a month is possible since he has multiplied himself.
