About 25 out of the 593 graduating students of the Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji Arakeji in Osun State, have obtained first class Bachelor degrees. The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Theophilus Olowokure, disclosed this while addressing journalists on Monday, ahead of the 9th convocation of the institution. According to the VC, a total of 608 students of the institution would be conferred with various degrees and diplomas at the forthcoming ceremony. Giving a breakdown of the degrees, the VC said, “A total of 593 graduated at the first-degree level, among whom 25 have secured first class honors, 245 second class upper, 249 second class lower, 84 third class and one student obtained ordinary pass degree. Five postgraduate diplomas and 10 master degrees would also be conferred with honours. “For the first degree, 37 of the graduating students come from the College of Agricultural Sciences, 84 from the College of Environmental Sciences, 140 from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 181 from the College of Management Sciences and 114 from the College of Natural Sciences. “It is significant that in this period the College of Law of the university is producing the first set of graduates. It is producing 37 graduates.” Olowokure noted that 16 out of the 25 academic programmes run by the university have been given full accreditation, while five have interim accreditation of the National Universities Commission. He also said many professional bodies in the country had accredited the professional programmes of the university, as he lamented the institution’s challenge of meeting its annual admission quota due to high fees and increase in the number of private universities in the country. “The high fees, which is necessitated by the need to cover high overhead costs, had the effect of making parents of prospective students and their wards shun private universities in preference for public universities that charge relatively low fees. NYSC – The one-year mandatory national service imposed on young graduates below the age of 30, if you haven’t already gone through it you probably will soon. In the past, it was a period graduates looked forward to with high hopes of a better future, the same cannot be said today, many young people are inducted to and released from the scheme every year, a whole year, during which you are paid a token of 19800 every month before being released into a world filled with millions of unemployed graduates. Many Corps members start to worry months before passing out because of the state of the country and fear that they are diving into the pool of unemployment like other graduates. Do you share that concern? Not to worry, keep reading, I’m confident the answers you seek lie in my next few paragraphs. This secret has a lot to do with setting goals, want to know a few things about goals? I’d like you to know that the ability to set goals as a young person is a superpower, and the bridge between goals and achievements is determination and discipline. It is easy to go through my next paragraphs and forget about them the moment you hit the last period. So before we proceed I want you to quietly mutter these words: “I am a thinker, a doer, an achiever, an excellent student of life and a valuable citizen of this country, I will make my youth service year a memorable one”. Having said those words, I have no doubt that you’re ready for the ride, come with me… How then do you go about making your service year fruitful? 1. DISCOVER THE OPPORTUNITIES IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT (THERE’S ALWAYS SOMETHING) Now, this is often the hardest part, it usually hidden, a Corps member who served in Kaduna upon passing out said “What do you expect when corps members who are sent to communities where there is no life for a whole year and yet when they are through there is no employment, the whole thing is a waste of time.” This is what most people say, but is it true? The answer is NO, the fact that you are made to serve in a place where nothing appears to be happening doesn’t mean that your whole year has to be a waste, look inwards, there is a skill to learn, a trade to engage in, books to read, preparations to make and relationships to build. I will treat these points one after the other for the sake of clarity. 2. LEARN A SKILL You’re probably thinking “If I had a kobo for every time I have heard this…” But I tell you something, we learn every time whether we want to or not, no knowledge is useless, you are a young, educated and resilient Nigerian and you can learn anything, I repeat, anything within the space of a year, as long as you put your mind to it. Be it Fashion design, hair styling, cosmetology, food production or agriculture. You can take online professional courses such as customer relationship and entrepreneurial development courses to help facilitate the starting and running of your business after NYSC, and don’t forget to save a few bucks off your allawee for this purpose. 3. PICK UP A TRADE Products, especially farm produce vary in prices according to geographical locations, for example, Onions in the Northeast, Tubers in the Southwest, Tomatoes in the North West and some parts of the South-south, vegetables, and fruits in the Southeast and so on. Do you have a commodity that is slightly more expensive where you come from? Buy them from your state of deployment and these things can be transported to areas where they are not so cheap and sold for higher prices than they were purchased, this has made bucks for a number of youth corps members according to testimonies. 4. MAKE CERTAIN PREPARATIONS Over 50% of corps members do not intend to stop at B.Sc or HND as the case may be, are you one of such people? This is a good time to prepare your mind and heart for the postgraduate course of your choice, learn about it, pick an institution, talk to experienced adults, send in applications, acquire funding, you will find that this is enough to make you feel fulfilled at the end of your service year if done properly. 5. Ask an average person today, 'How much square meal do you eat per day?'. His/Her response will be two. And the two at times is not nutritious enough. And this is due to poverty (inability to provide for the basic necessities). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), An individual who can not afford a three square meal is classified to be poor. In economics, human wants are insatiable, but the resources to satisfy them are limited. Meaning resources are less than wants. Then the next question is 'How can we break the chain of poverty?'. Breaking the chain of poverty lies in our (individual's) hands. The slots available for individuals in the labor market is very few or slim. So when the few are employed in the offices, should the rest of the unemployed go and start begging or kill themselves or even start stealing?, No. This is when the spirit of entrepreneurship comes in. What is entrepreneurship? According to the Oxford dictionary, Entrepreneurship is the art or science of innovation and risk-taking for profit in business. In other words, entrepreneurship is when someone sees opportunity where others are seeing a roadblock and decides to venture into it as a business (innovation) with the aim of making a profit from it (risk-taking). As an entrepreneur, you have to critically study your environment to know what the need gap is and proffer solution to it (innovation). By taking this step you're gradually breaking the chain of poverty. Now, let's assume an individual has successfully created/started his own business. The next thing required is sustained growth. The business set up by the entrepreneur needs to grow in order to start making profits. I'll recall my statement earlier when I said that Breaking the chain of poverty lies in our (individual's) hands... An average person today has several social media accounts such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, etc. Why not make use of these social media account profitably by promoting one business or the other. Or even helping a friend to promote his business. For every log in you make in most of these social media, there is always an infinitesimal profit that enters for the organizations who own it. Why then making the revenue a one-way causation? Why not making it a two-way causation where the both parties gets profit from it? I guess you understand what I mean. A friend once told me on WhatsApp that he has a little business that sells data at cheaper rates and other related ads. He pleaded with me to help him promote it. I then told him to send a summarized banner of his business which he did. I uploaded the banner to my WhatsApp status. Lo and behold he testified that before the end of that day and days after, he was able to make a very large sales as ever before. And I was like 'woow'. I just fertilized a business at little or no cost. It was really an achievement. Now tell me, will such a friend forget me in the nearest future even when I need his help? The answer is NO on a normal ground (Ceteris Paribus). We spend hours chatting on WhatsApp. So ask yourself. What you have achieved since then?. I watched an India movie back then. But it is so painful I have forgotten the title (I know most of you will remember when I start citing it). In the movie, a man (a Keke napep driver) was in need of something, then another man (the passenger) helped him out. The Keke napep driver had the intention to pay back, but the other man (passenger) told him not to worry. That all he (driver) needed to do is to help three other persons when the chance comes. And he (driver) should tell the three people he had helped to also help three other people and the sequence should continue in such a manner. So the trend of helping three people to help three people to help three people continued to a point that the other man (passenger) that originated the idea was in a costly need. And he could benefit from this trend because the solution to his need is in the hands of someone he had once helped. Are you loving this?�. How can we tackle this menace that looks advantageous when it is based on people’s selfish interest and disadvantageous to the sustenance of the reading culture we are trying to build and maintain. It is noteworthy to say that every sphere of influence has its own society, a group of people that are saddled with the expectation to cohabit together for the betterment of each other and them also having a dominant expectation. In this topic, we will be looking at what makes up an academic society, for those who are not aware of this, you are about to get educated on the concept and it relates to the cramming system in the educational sector of Nigeria. It is also noteworthy to say that an academic society can also be said to be a learned society. A learned society is also known as a learned academy, scholarly society, or academic association) is an organization that exists to promote an academic discipline, profession, or a group of related disciplines such as the arts. If the main reason why such societies are created is to promote discipline, the onus lies on us to identify who are the people that spearhead this and why are they chosen to spearhead it? What are their qualifications and most importantly the role they have to play? Starting from the first question stated above, who are these people called the learned? They are called learned because they possess and have acquired much knowledge through study in a particular field or discipline. We will agree that much knowledge couldn’t be gotten through cramming because the word study was mentioned and a point of emphasis, and we are aware that a crammer does not study to acquired or retain knowledge but to pass. The second question we must answer as stated above is the question of the role they have to play. One of the roles out of numerous roles they are expected to perform is to advance the knowledge in its respective discipline and promote this in our global village. If this is through, then we are very much aware that a crammer can’t and won’t do such.
