Governor of Cross River State and candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Professor Ben Ayade has been declared the winner of the March 9 governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ayade, who won in all the 18 local government areas of the state, polled 381,484.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) came second with 131,161, while the Social Democratic Party (SDP) polled 4, 818 votes.

Announcing the results in the early hours of Monday, the returning officer and Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, Warri, Delta State, Professor Akii Ibhadode, said the PDP candidate having scored the highest number of votes and fulfilled the requirements of the law, was returned elected.

The three Independent National Electoral commission’s (INEC) adhoc staffs that were abducted on Saturday have regained their freedom.

According to a police report, the three were released at about 9 pm Sunday night.

They have since been reunited with their families.

The Katsina police Command in a statement said they have been taken to Danmusa hospital for medical checkup.

The terse statement reads: ” Today 10/03/2019 at about 21:00hrs, the 3 abducted INEC ad hoc staff were released by their abductors. They have been taken to Danmusa Hospital for medical checkups and later rejoined their respective families. Investigation is top gear with a view to arrest the hoodlums. I will continue to keep you posted.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed the Nassarawo Binyeri State Constituency election following the death of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Saturday’s poll, Adamu Kwanate.

Kwanate until his death was the member representing Nassarawo Binyeri State Constituency (Mayo Belwa LGA) in the Adamawa State House of Assembly.

The election will now hold on 23rd Mar h 2019.

The rescheduling of the election which was done in line with Section 36 (1) of the Electoral Act (2010) as amended will however not affect polls in other areas of the state.

This is as INEC also confirmed the fire incident in Akwa-Ibom state.

INEC in a statement signed by the National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye stated ” the Commission has been informed of the death of Hon. Adamu Kwanate, who until his death was the member representing Nassarawo Binyeri State Constituency (Mayo Belwa LGA) in the Adamawa State House of Assembly. He was also the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the same Constituency in the election scheduled for Saturday 9th March, 2019.

“Consequently, INEC is compelled to countermand the Nassarawo Binyeri State Constituency election for tomorrow and the same has been rescheduled to Saturday 23rd March, 2019 in line with Section 36(1) of the Electoral Act (2010) as amended. The Governorship election in the constituency and all other state constituencies elections will however proceed as scheduled tomorrow.

On the fire incident, INEC assures that it will not affect the conduct of the elections in the area.

He also assured the general public that the commission will ensure that those behind it arson face the full wrath of the law

He stated: “wishes to inform the public with regret of yet another fire incident. This time its office in lbesikpo Asutan Local Government Area of Akwa lbom State which occurred in the early hours of today, Friday. 8th March 2019.

“While we do not at this point know the cause of the fire, a report has been made to the law enforcement agencies and the Fire Service. We are liaising closely with both agencies to investigate and ascertain the cause of the fire and if found to be a deliberate act, we will ensure diligent and vigorous prosecution of those responsible.

“Several sensitive and non-sensitive materials for tomorrow‘s Governorship and State House of Assembly elections were destroyed including 198 Smart Card Readers, the printed Register of Voters, 13 Generators as well as several Voting Cubicles and office equipment.

“Fortunately, the ballot papers and results for the elections were not affected and are intact. Acting timely, the Commission has been able to replace and reconfigure all the destroyed Smart Card Readers and reprinted the Register of Voters. With the replacement and the salvage of other items, we are pleased to announce that the election will proceed as scheduled. All registered voters in the Local Government Area are therefore requested to turn up to cast their votes between 8am and 2pm tomorrow. “

The Nigerian Army said on Friday that it would investigate the alleged invasion of residence of the Rivers State commissioner of education by some security agents.

Its spokesman, Colonel Sagir Musa said in a statement that the Army would not hesitate to punish any of its personnel involved in any such act as they have been told in clear terms the rules of engagement regarding the on going democratic process in the country.

The statement reads :”The Nigerian Army (NA) has observed some CCTV footages in circulation on social media and other online platforms, allegedly showing soldiers of the NA and other security agents invading the residence of the Rivers State Commissioner of Education, Hon. Dr. Tamunosisi Gogo-Jaja.

“The NA has started conducting a comprehensive forensic investigation of the footages to authenticate the validity or otherwise of the claims to guide its further actions.

“In the view of these allegations, the NA, for the umpteenth time, categorically reiterate its position in the entire conduct of the 2019 General elections as severally and consistently espoused and directed by the Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen TY Buratai which is – “NA is apolitical, neutral, impartial and will not compromise its constitutional roles under any guise”.

“For RE-emphasis, NA’s responsibility in the entire electioneering process is only to assist civil authority, Nigeria Police and other relevant security agencies to – “provide a secure, peaceful and enabling environment for the successful and transparent conduct of the election”.

“Anything beyond this is not authorized and therefore totally unacceptable by the leadership of the NA.

“Any military personnel confirmed to be involved in any professional misconduct, such a person/s would be dealt with decisively in accordance with the law.

“To this end, the NA wishes to request well-meaning Nigerians to always forward genuine complaints and evidence of professional misconduct against any of its personnel for investigation and necessary action.”

Barely a day to the House of Assembly election the All Progressive Congress’ candidate for the House of assembly in Ekiti State, Mr. Adeyemi Ajibade escaped assassination in his home town, Osun Ekiti on Wednesday night March 7th 2019 by unknown hoodlums.

Ajibade who is seeking to represent Moba Constituency 1 in the Saturday’s election tactfully escaped death from the hand of the underworld men who stormed his residence at about 11:58 PM.

But the attempt was voided as a result of extra vigilant and alert by the people around the residence when the hoodlums arrived.

While some of the hoodlums had already gained partial entrance, others were reportedly still hanging outside.

On sighting the strange movement and sounds around that time, Ajibade said he raised alert and cried for help which led to awakeness of the neighbours. And this amounted to quick vacation of the thugs from the area.

“I thank God for voiding the attempt by using the neighbours for my safety.

“The hoodlums were five in number with dangerous weapons in their possession. They forced the door to gain entrance but as I observed that I decided to shout and cry for help.

“My neighbours came out en masse to rescue me. They ran away when they realised that people gathered together to protect myself and my family”, he said.

It would be recalled that similar incident occurred on October 17th, 2018 which led to the death of an APC Chairman in Moba local Government Mr. Moses Adeoye who was killed at his residence in Otun Ekiti

Meanwhile, the assassination attempt on Mr Ajibade Adeyemi has been reported to security agencies in Ekiti State.

When contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti division, DSP Caleb Ikechukwu, said the case has not been reported at the police headquarters in Ado Ekiti.

“I have not been briefed but I know that the matter would have been under serious investigation since the victim said our men had been informed.

“I am going to contact our men at the Criminal Investigation Department(CID) to know how far they have gone about the case”, Ikechukwu said.

A 35-year old man, Mr, Paul Nosakhare, has told an Oredo Magistrate Court of how he caught his newly married wife, Stella Maris Alegbe, with his Pastor, Joseph Igwemoh, Head of the Global Influence Ministry.

Pastor Igwemoh was last year arraigned on two count charges bothering on abduction and act likely to cause breach of peace was accused of sleeping with Stella inside his church.

At the resumed hearing of the case, Paul, during cross examination told the court he served as an Assistant Pastor to the suspect before the sexual scandal broke out.

Paul said he met Stella through Pastor Igwemoh and they courted for four years before they got married on March 24, 2018.

He said marriage lasted only three months as his wife moved out in July after the Pastor rented an apartment for her.

He stated that Pastor Igwemoh warned them not to have sexual intercourse until proper marriage is done while they were courting.

Paul said his wife denied him sex on the first and second night of their wedding which was conducted by Igwemoh.

According to his statement on oath before the court: ”I reported my wife refusal for me to have sex with her to my pastor who invited us to his office and advised both of us to be using condom for the period of three months.

“I was puzzled but I did not say anything because he is my pastor.

“There was a day I returned Pastor’s car to him in the church. I met one Pastor Comfort who told me Pastor was inside the office. After knocking severally, the Pastor refused to open the door but he switched off the light.

“After five minutes, I saw my wife coming out of Pastor’s office ruffled and sweating profusely. Pastor came out of the office and was wearing boxers and singlet.

“On June 17th, I went to the Pastor’s office and met my wife. The pastor was lying down in the bed while my wife was sitting on the floor very close to the Pastor.

“I asked my wife to follow me home but she to say saying she has not finished with the pastor. She returned home at 7pm.”

Paul said all efforts for him to make the marriage work failed as his wife moved out on July 6th, 2018.

Presiding Magistrate, I.U. Iyioha adjourned further hearing to March 21, 2019.

A group of yet-to-be identified gunmen who attacked one of the warehouses in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State have reportedly killed one of the police officers attached to Aba Command of the Nigeria Police Force.

The police officer according to close sources at the Aba Area Command is known among his colleagues as Nma Agha (War Sword).

The Nation learnt that before the incident, the gunmen had gone to a warehouse located at Clifford in Aba South Local Government Area of the state where they robbed and carted away huge sums of cash from the owners.

Unconfirmed reports have it that the gunmen also shot a worker at the warehouse who was later rushed to a private hospital at East road not too far from the scene of an incident where he is said receiving medical attention after bleeding profusely.

There are fears amongst close associates that the warehouse staff may not survive the gunshot.

It was learnt that the hoodlums had finished robbing the warehouse and were on their way when they upon sighting the police officer and his team who were said to have gone for another duty not too far from the scene of the incident, started shooting at them.

It was learnt that the police team who were apparently taken by surprise could not respond to the shooting.

They later discovered that one of their colleagues was hit by bullets from the hoodlums as they can barely do little to save his life.

The Abia State Police Command’s spokesman, Geoffrey Ogbonna in a telephone chat confirmed the death of the police officer, adding that investigation into the matter had commenced.

Ogbonna said that the police had launched manhunt on the hoodlums to make sure that they didn’t escape justice.

Meanwhile, residents of Aba have expressed their fears over the continued attack on warehouse owners and security personnel in the state and Aba in particular by hoodlums, a worrisome incident which they said needed to be checked before it goes out of hand.

But security personnel who pleaded not to be mentioned told our reporter that events as such were expected at “this electioneering period.”

According to the officer, the hoodlums especially those working for politicians would take all manner of risk to get cash to buy the weapon and when they couldn’t, they will attack any armed bearing security personnel to collect the person’s weapons with the aim of using such to perpetuate their evil acts for their masters.

The personnel added that they were equally working to ensure that the state isn’t conducive for the hoodlums to operate.

The Police Command in Anambra said on Wednesday, that it has arrested 88 suspected cultists in parts of the state between Feb. 25 and March 5.

Mr Rabiu Ladodo, the Commissioner of Police in charge of 2019 general elections in Anambra, made the disclosure in Awka while briefing newsmen on security situation in the state.

Ladodo said the suspects were arrested at different locations in Anambra to ensure provision of adequate security to the people.

The commissioner of police said that after the arrest, 31 of the suspects were screened out, 27 charged to court, while 30 others were still under investigations.

‘‘We recovered the following exhibits; one double barrel gun, 14 live cartridges, dry leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa, substance suspected to be cocaine, two axes, one dagger and one machete,’’ he said.

Ladodo gave assurance that security agents in the area had reviewed their operations and mapped out strategies to address major election threats such as thuggery and cultism.

He said that all the 4,608 polling units would be effectively covered during the March 9 Governorship and State House of Assembly elections.

Ladodo said that police would enforce the Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu’s ban on unauthorised use of unmarked/covered vehicle number plates during the elections.

‘‘This constitutes serious security threat to the upcoming Governorship and State House of Assembly elections.

‘‘Covering of number plates also amount to a clear breach of Road Traffic Act and other relevant laws of the land,’’ he said.

Ladodo urged the public, especially eligible voters, to participate in the elections and warned mischief makers and ballot box snatchers to stay away from the state.

The Commissioner of Police (CP), in Rivers state, Usman Belel has debunked the alleged plan to kidnap the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), in the state ahead of Saturday’s governorship and state House of Assembly elections.

The state government through the Special Assistant to the Governor on Electronic Media, Simoen Nwakudu in a statement on Tuesday had raised an alarm on an alleged plan by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the state to kidnap the State REC ahead of the polls to push for the postponement of the exercise in the state to a later date.

But the CP who apparently felt embarrassed by the development in a statement he signed in Port Harcourt, the state capital on Tuesday described the allegation as unfounded and unverifiable urged members of the public to disregard it.

He assured the people of the state that the command and other security agencies in the state are on top of the security of the state during the elections, insisting that nothing will go wrong.

The state security Boss said, “The attention of the Rivers State Police Command has been drawn to a Press Statement Signed by Simon Nwakudu , S.A to the Governor of Rivers State on Electronic Media , on the planned kidnap of the Resident Electoral Commissioner and subsequent Postponement of the Gubernatorial and House of Assembly Elections Scheduled to hold on Saturday 9th March, 2019.

“The Nigeria Police Force being the lead Agency in Internal Security and on Election Security Duties is disturbed by this unverifiable, unfounded, baseless and malicious allegation and hereby wishes to refute and condemn the allegation in the strongest terms and to allay the fears and apprehension generated by that unnecessary and alarmist report by the Rivers State Government,” he said.

Speaking further said, “To this end, it has become increasingly necessary to refute that phantom allegation and herein State as follows:-

“The Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) headed by the Commissioner of Police, ahead of the 2019 Elections met severally and fashioned out modules on the Security of the entire Election process, which was largely responsible for the successful conduct of the Presidential and National Assembly Elections in the State.

“The Committee remains irrevocably committed and untiring in its efforts to ensure that the Gubernatorial and State Assembly Elections scheduled to hold on Saturday are peaceful, credible and devoid of violence.

“The Rivers State Government, is levying this weighty allegation on the Security Agencies at this crucial moment, is indeed sad and unfortunate, when in actual fact, the Security Agencies should be encouraged and prayed for by all and sundry, to entrench a credible process that will stand the test of time.

“The allegation of kidnap of the Resident Electoral Commissioner and postponement of the Elections, are all serious issues that touch on State Security, hence they will be thoroughly investigated, to ascertain the veracity or otherwise and bring anybody or group found complicit to Justice.”

Belel appealed, “Consequently, may I at this point appeal to the Residents of the State to remain calm and go about their normal activities, as there is no cause for alarm.

“The allegation, for all intents and purposes, is politically motivated and only intended to heat up the polity and create unnecessary tension in the State.

“It is further noted, albeit, regrettably, that, the allegation is a calculated attempt to undermine and overreach the Security Agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), hence I call on the good people of the State and the public at large, to disregard and discountenance same, as lacking in merit .

“Finally, I want to use this medium to reiterate our commitment to serve you better, remain professional, focused and provide a level playing field for all the Political Parties and the Electorates to exercise their franchise.” he pledged.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Zamfara said they are ready for Saturday’s governorship and state assembly elections.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the agents of the two parties disclosed this to newsmen in Gusau on Wednesday at the unveiling and distribution of election materials by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

NAN further reports that the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Asma’u Maikudi led the distribution of sensitive election materials at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The APC Agent, Alhaji Umar Abbas said his party is satisfied with the arrangements by the INEC ahead of the elections.

Abbas, who is the State APC Collation officer for the 2019 general elections, said, “We are here to witness the distribution of the materials by the INEC, we are satisfied with the arrangements, the REC is seated with us monitoring the exercise, security agencies are also present.”

He debunked the allegations against his party by other political parties that the APC was conniving with INEC to divert some election materials.

He said, “I don’t want to comment on this, let them prove the allegations.”

The State PDP Secretary, Alhaji Abubukar Maradun said the party was set to participate in the governoship and state assembly elections in the state.

“We have challenged the commission’s mode of distribution of election materials so that the happenings at the last Presidential and National Assembly elections would not be repeated in the state.

“We have made adequate arrangements, we have qualified agents across the 14 local government areas of the state.

“You know in the last Presidential and National Assembly elections, materials were not allocated appropriately, in Kaura there was a polling unit with 1000 voters but they were given 100 ballot papers.

“We insisted that before any materials will be moved from here, we must know the number allocated to each of the local government areas, especially the ballot papers and broadsheet,” he said.

“Every revolution starts like a seed, it grows to become an oak tree,’’ these were the words of Lazeez Ayinla Kolawole (LAK), the originator of the campaign slogan, “O To Ge”, which was used in uprooting the political structure of Senate President Bukola Saraki in Kwara.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) ran its campaign under this slogan, dislodging three sitting senators, six house of reps members and securing landslide victory for President Muhammadu Buhari.



LAK, who is 79 years old, spoke to NAN in Ilorin on how he came about the wildfire campaign slogan, “O To Ge” which literally translates to “Enough is Enough’’.

The renowned Kwara politician said the “O to Ge’’ movement actually started in 2010 when he was an aspirant for the Kwara central senatorial seat under the PDP, preparatory to the 2011 general election.

The 1971 graduate of political science from the University of Lagos said he contested the seat with Saraki, but was “robbed of his mandate’’.

Before, 2010, LAK said he had used a similar slogan, “It Is Time For Change’’ in 2003 when he contested Kwara governorship primary of the PDP which was also won by Saraki.

‘IT DIDN’T START IN 2018’

“This movement did not just start in 2018,” the politician said. “Every revolution starts like a seed and with time it grows to become an oak tree.

“When I foresaw the revolution that will end the era of bad governance in Kwara, majority of the people did not see it.

“People did not see it then and I was accused of being too revolutionary but I assured them that we will ultimately get there.

“Gradually, the revolution assumed the spine and magnitude that we just saw in this year’s election, when the people used the power of their votes to dethrone decades of a political dynasty that had impoverished Kwara.”

The septuagenarian, who left public service as a permanent secretary in 1982 for active politics, alleged that for 40 years, Kwara was under the “government of hegemony of exploitation, massive looting of public resources and administration so insensitive to the plights of the people’’.

“Kwara is not an industrial state, it is an agrarian state but today we do not have even a Ministry of Agriculture. We do not have any thriving agricultural project at all,” he said.

“All the Agric nurseries and training schools and even the land of the Ministry of Agriculture were sold out.’’

He said the media-hyped multi-billion Naira Shonga Farm project by Saraki as governor of Kwara was a sham.

SARAKI ‘PLUNGED KWARA INTO DEBT

“Billions of Naira were pumped into the project but till today no single farm product came out of the farm till it got moribund,” he said.

“It is all fraud. What they called Zimbabwe farmers were just farm workers who did not bring a dime to the state for investment yet they called them investors.

“It was the state government that borrowed billions of Naira from the defunct Intercontinental Bank and gave it to these people but we have nothing to show for it.”

He alleged that the state-owned Trade Bank was liquidated simply because the management was not cooperating with the state’s political authority to use the bank forthe looting of resources.

COLLAPSE OF GOVERNMENT COMPANIES

LAK said under the watchful eyes of the past administrations also, state owned Gateway Insurance Company, Kwara Express and Kwara Hotels folded up.

He said the state had witnessed a total decay of infrastructure, ranging from bad roads, poor health delivery system, the collapse of environmental sanitation and educational system.

“When I saw all these, I said we must not continue in that way and allow these people to destroy the state. Then, I said, “O to Ge, Enough is Enough. We must rise against the misrule and slavery,’’ he said.

He said the maladministration started having significant impact on the people when it was extended to the civil service when workers, pensioners and the common man started feeling the pinch.

He said the civil service, which ought to be the engine room of government, was politicised and turned to rubber stamp.

‘ILLEGAL’ ELEVATION OF POLITICAL GODFATHERS

LAK said some Level 12 officers with political godfathers were appointed permanent secretaries above their seniors, thereby dampening the morale of workers

He said the situation got so bad that government could no longer pay salaries of civil servants as well as gratuities and pensions of retirees.

“With reckless looting of the state’s treasury and siphoning of government money to individual pockets, the government could not pay salaries of civil servants,” he said.

“The entitlements of retirees after 35 years of active service to the state were not paid and they were regularly being called for screening during which many of them died.

“In 2008, the Bukola Saraki government borrowed N3.3 billion from Intercontinental Bank to settle the accumulated arrears of benefits of Kwara retirees.

“When the government received the money, a committee set up for the disbursement recommended that 50 per cent of the money be used for the pensioners while the balance be used for the development of infrastructure.’’

He said the cumulative effects of decades of bad governance led to the mass action and revolution fuelled the “O to Ge” movement that ended Saraki’s grip on Kwara politics.

“It is not just about the campaign because the people of Kwara decided that they want a change of government because they were tired of the old order,” he said.

“What we have achieved today is the collective efforts of all Kwarans who wear the shoes and know where they pinch.”

President Muhammadu Buhari says he will retire to Daura after he completes his second term in 2023.

Daura, in Katsina state, is the president’s hometown.

He spoke on Tuesday while meeting with traditional rulers at the presidential villa in Abuja.

“This is my second and final term, at the end of which I will, God willing, go to Daura and settle down,” he said.

He asked traditional rulers in the country to support the anti-corruption war of his administration, using their vast knowledge and links to families in their communities.

He noted that as monarchs, they knew the families who harboured criminals and those who also had individuals with no tainted records.

“You know all the families who harbour criminals and you know those who produce respectable individuals,” he said.

“You know the weaknesses of our society. We need your support to consolidate our achievements”,

The rulers came to visit him under the aegis of the National Council of Traditional Rulers.

The council was led to the state house by Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, sultan of Sokoto.

The president seized the opportunity to speak on the efforts by the federal government to address national security challenges and stabilise the polity.

He said, “What we need now is your support. No government can serve creditably without your support. We will always count on your support.”

Speaking on their mission earlier, the sultan informed Buhari that they came to congratulate him on his re-election for another term.

He advised Nigerians to “accept the election result as the will of God.”

The sultan said the traditional rulers supported Buhari’s policies and would help to disseminate information on them to the people.

1. Ojota

Ojota used to be a military settlement in the late 18th century and soldiers practiced their shooting there. The area had several gun firing spots and became known as “Oju Ota” in Yoruba which means “Bullet spots”. It later metamorphosed into Ojota which it is called now.


2.Abule Egba

This area is on the outskirts of Lagos and got its name from the early settlers who were Egba people from Abeokuta. The area was first called “Abule awon egba” in Yoruba, which means “Village of Egba people”. It later became “Abule Egba”.


3.Apongbon

Apongbon is one of Lagos’ most popular markets, and it’s also quite close to the popular Oke-Arin market. It got its name from the then acting governor of the Lagos colony, William McCoskry, who had a Red Beard. The Yorubas who couldn’t pronounce the colonial governor’s name decided to describe him by his red beard and started calling him “Oyinbo to pon ni igbon” meaning a red-bearded man. It later became Apongbon.


4.Magodo

Magodo is now a posh area, but in the past, it used to be sacred land. The residents had a lot of taboos and one of them was to avoid using mortars and pestles, “Ma gun odo” which means “Don’t pound it”. It later became ‘Magodo.


5.Epetedo

Epe is named after the early settlers who were Epe traders. The area became dominated by the Epes and they still trade there until today.


6.Ebute-Metta

Ebute-Metta is one of the earliest harbor docks where British ships berthed at. It was a hub for trade and commerce in colonial times. Ebute-Metta is a fusion of the words “Ebute” which means the seaside in Yoruba, and “Metta” which means three.


7.Broad street

The broad street used to be one of the longest and widest streets in the city. It got its name from its broadness.


8.Agidingbi

The British Naval forces invaded Lagos in 1885 under the pretext of stopping slavery and human sacrifice. The noise their canon made was really loud, and the sound was heard around the streets of Lagos Island. The people described the sound as “A gb din gbinnn”. Which means a loud groundbreaking noise. The name Agidingbi was borne out of this.


9.Victoria Island

Victoria Island was also a major hub for commerce and British ships berthed there often. It’s named after Queen Victoria of England who was Queen from 1837-1901.


10.Ikeja

Ikeja, the capital of Lagos, is actually an abbreviation for “Ikorodu And Epe Joint Administration”. It was coined by the colonial masters for ease of administration.”

Still in the processing of fighting for the rights to have won the 2019 presidential election. The presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar complained bitterly about the arrest of his son-in-law and his Lawyer on his Twitter handle. For good three weeks now, his son-in-law has been detained and this is due to the fact that he supported him during his presidential campaign, he said.

He wrote on his Twitter page;

My son in law and lawyer have been detained, one for 3 weeks and the other recently. They are paying the price for supporting me. I urge those now persecuting them to remember that a government’s mandate is to pursue peace and justice for all, and not just those who support them.

Despite losing his bid to return to the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, a senator representing Akwa Ibom north-west, says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost the presidential election the day he joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former Senate minority leader joined the ruling party in August, with APC celebrating his decision to quit the opposition party.

Some political pundits had said one of the reasons APC flagged off its presidential campaign in Akwa Ibom was because of the influence Akpabio commands.

He had also boasted that he would deliver Akwa Ibom for Buhari but he could neither fulfill the promise or secure his seat.

But speaking in an interview with Channels Television‘s Seun Okinbaloye, Akpabio said “My former party lost from the day I stepped out of it.”

Akpabio said the PDP became lighter when he moved to the ruling party with thousands of his supporters.

He said this depleted the PDP’s numbers and by extension its chances of winning the elections.

The former governor of Akwa Ibom however, noted that the PDP would not have been able to defeat Buhari even if he was there because Nigerians wanted continuity.

“I believe strongly that the president needed to be re-elected,” Akpabio said.

Speaking about his loss at the senatorial poll, Akpabio said he was robbed.

“Those responsible, whether the REC in Akwa-Ibom state or those he instructed know the reality, my plea now is that they should announce my result,” he said.

“The reality is that I am asking for justice. I am saying that INEC should be bold enough to do the right thing.

“I am disappointed that a state with so much followership as far as the party is concerned, the state that loves President Buhari so much was not allowed as a result of a conspiracy to bring out the votes.”
