Tempers rose at Stadium Roundabout, Kaduna, on Saturday morning as soldiers prevented some voters from accessing their polling units. The soldiers had stopped residents of the southern part of the Kaduna metropolis whose polling units are located in the various places at the city center. At their Roundabout roadblock, the soldiers stopped people from driving to the city center, saying they had orders from above not to allow movement. Displaying their PVCs, the voters started chanting “Buhari must go” and insisted that nobody would stop them from accessing their polling units. The soldiers also attempted to seize mobile phones from journalists who were taking pictures of the incident, but they stood their ground, insisting that they were performing their constitutional duties like soldiers as well. The intervention of a senior army officer averted a major situation. The officer ordered that all those with their PVCs should be allowed to pass. Meanwhile, Nasir el-Rufai, the state governor, and Adeniyi Oyebade, a major general and commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), queued among hundreds of voters in their polling unit 024, Runka/Marnona opposite NDA, Anguwan Sarki, Kaduna North LGA. El-Rufai was in the queue for hours as the card readers failed in his unit. source: https://www.titiloyeblog.com/2019/02/tension-in-kaduna-as-soldiers-stop.html Cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd44

Boko Haram insurgents reportedly killed at least 60 persons in the attack on the convoy of Kashim Shettima, governor of Borno state. According to Reuters, survivors also claimed “between 100 and 200” were abducted in the attack. The insurgents had attacked Shettima and his campaign team while on their way to Gamboru Ngala, a community which shares the border with Cameroon. Shettima had told TheCable that three persons were killed in the attack: “a soldier and two stakeholders, one of whom is the influential chairman of Jogol Handset Sellers Association.” But Reuters quoted survivors as saying the casualty figure is much higher than what the governor reported. “One survivor said he saw about 40 bodies; another estimated that as many as 100 died,” the agency said. “The militants also took between 100 and 200 people captive, officials said. At least 60 bodies were taken to a hospital morgue in Maiduguri after the attack, some with their throats cut, said a humanitarian worker who looked into the incident.” It is still unclear how the insurgents learned about the governor’s movement which was said to have involved an 85-vehicle convoy including buses full of supporters. They had reportedly opened fire on the convoy as it passed through Maula village. According to Reuters, while grenades were launched right into the middle of the motorcade, the governor, who was in the front half of the convoy, managed to escape. A security official who was among the governor’s team reportedly said the insurgents “they came out with two pickup trucks mounted with anti-aircraft guns, all of the fighters in military camouflage, while the rest of them came from the roadside, firing on us.” “Some people tried to escape by turning back. Others abandoned their vehicles and ran into the bush. As they ran, the insurgents opened fire. I would not be surprised if 100 people lost their lives.” The insurgents subsequently ordered other survivors into the remaining vehicles and drove away with “at least 100 people”, according to a witness, although “a Nigerian intelligence official put the number of captives as high as 200.” According to another witness’ account, more than 200 people managed to escape from the scene. “At least 60 bodies were taken to a hospital morgue in Maiduguri after the attack, some with their throats cut,” a humanitarian worker was quoted as saying. Only recently, the governor wept before President Muhammadu Buhari over the continued Boko Haram attacks in the state. source: https://www.titiloyeblog.com/2019/02/report-60-killed-100-abducted-in-attack.html Cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd44

Mohammed Adamu, inspector-general of police, has defended the arrest of Rafiu Ibrahim, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senator representing Kwara south. Adamu said the senator, who is seeking reelection, was arrested after being fingered in the violence which occurred in the state earlier in the week. The violence which broke out in Ojuku community under Kwara south senatorial district reportedly involved supporters of the PDP and All Progressives Congress (APC). At least two persons were killed and many injured in the incident which the PDP and the APC have been trading blames over. Speaking at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) briefing in Abuja on Friday, the police IG said Ibrahim’s position as a senator does not absolve him of his alleged crime. According to him, “whether you are a candidate or not, you are expected not to break the law. He said: “The group of people that were suspected to have done the killing (in Kwara) were arrested. And one of them is a candidate of one political party. So because he is a candidate in the election, should we allow him go without facing the law? “He has been arrested with others for him to defend himself. It is not just because he belongs to a political party; it was because of the murder that took place.” The PDP had described the arrest as an act of provocation. source: https://www.titiloyeblog.com/2019/02/he-broke-law-igp-defends-arrest-of-pdp.html

Do you know that even if Fela Durotoye loses tomorrow with only a thousand votes it is still a victory for the youths? Yes! As little as a thousand votes count for something and I’ll tell you why to follow me… 1. It means that a thousand Nigerians heard and understood our campaign and have decided to join the movement. 2. It means that a thousand individuals believe that a young Nigerian is capable of taking the country to where it needs to be 3. It means that a thousand people refused to take 5000 Naira in exchange for their votes understanding that it is not enough to last four years 4. It means that a thousand people are tired of Old Nigeria and are thirsty for a new one 5. It means that our voices woke a thousand sleeping minds and it’s safe to say those minds are awake for good. And you’ll agree with me that a thousand voices can create a frenzy and a thousand echoes is an explosion. If you take their money in exchange for your vote tomorrow you are unequivocally telling them that they have the permission to laugh at us the next time we stand up now that they know how it all ends, you’re saying in clear words that we are all talk and no action. So don’t let them sway you with the “don’t waste your vote” talk because I have heard it to, it’s almost all I hear this day, whether the youths win or lose I want you to know that my vote will not go to waste sir, if I end up being the only candidate to choose ANN tomorrow I would walk away with my head up high because that is one NO among 200 million YES’S. A thousand votes to this noble cause will encourage us to continue to work, hope and pray because we know that a thousand people are doing the same and a thousand commendations today can become a million in 2023. Fela Durotoye did not instruct me to write this, he doesn’t even know my name, he never shook hands with me, but it is my hope that when he reads this it will give him the strength to keep fighting for the young people of this country. continue reading here: https://www.titiloyeblog.com/2019/02/a-thousand-voices.html Cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd44

The World Anti-Corruption Research Network has asked the attorney-general of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, to disallow Atiku Abubakar from contesting in Saturday’s presidential election. The UK-based group in the petition dated February 20, 2019, said it is worried about Atiku’s candidacy which “poses a security risk to the country”. Atiku, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has had multiple criminal investigations over the last decade, the group said. “The major heads of our concern against this candidate are twofold,” read the petition, signed by Gbenga Oduntan on behalf of two other group — HEDA, led by Olanrewaju Suraj, and The Corner House, headed by Nicholas Hildyard. “In view of the available open-source evidence, he is, in our opinion not fit and proper person and shouldn’t therefore, not be allowed to contest and/or enter into the most exalted office of the land in any country, let alone in Nigeria which has been addressing severe transparency challenges.” The group listed the alleged bribery and money laundering cases involving the former vice-president. Atiku had been accused of demanding a bribe of $500,000 to facilitate the award of contracts to two American telecommunication firms in Nigeria and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had also searched his residence in the US but no money was found. The investigators had videotaped William Jefferson, who was the congressman representing Louisiana, receiving $100,000 worth of $100 bills which he claimed was meant for Atiku, but the PDP’s candidate has consistently denied the allegation. “Atiku Abubakar’s exposure to the United States criminal justice system over the last decade gives the United States government near complete leverage over him,” the group said while listing the security implications should he emerge Nigeria’s president. “It is extremely easy to compromise someone who has put himself in this position through blackmail. The threat of releasing damaging revelations and evidence kept on file against him over the years is a clear and present danger. “The use of Kompromat on foreign leaders in international relations is alive and well and is, in fact, topical in relation to the United States history and current national life.” The group said Atiku’s presidency would be vulnerable and be easily exploited by the US. For 13 years, Atiku could not enter the US but he was eventually granted a visa in December. His subsequent visit to the US was a boast to his campaign but the group said his visit, allegedly facilitated by US lobbyists, is an indication of collusion between his campaign and foreign elements and this makes his candidacy a risky one on Nigeria. The group called on security agencies, academia, lawyers to engage in an interdisciplinary study of the business and any other connections between Atiku and the US. “In addition to the need to avoid allowing an easily compromised person to become President of Nigeria upon whom illegal leverage may be exercised, there is the urgent need to consider the implications for Nigeria’s image to install a President like Atiku Abubakar in view of the country’s avowed interests to abandon the brand of being a ‘fantastically corrupt state’,” it said. Atiku is the major challenger of President Muhammadu Buhari, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election holding on Saturday. source: https://www.titiloyeblog.com/2019/02/anti-corruption-network-asks-malami-to.html

President Muhammadu Buhari says there is a huge amount of foreign currency flooding the country intended to influence the outcome of the general election beginning on Saturday. According to Garba Shehu, the president’s senior special assistant on media and publicity, Buhari raised the alarm during the federal executive council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday. Shehu said the president accused some politicians of flouting money laundering regulations in their desperate bid to capture political power. He, however, commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for successfully tracking the money in “millions of United States dollars”. According to him, the EFCC success followed the presidential directive to investigative agencies to probe a number of high profile cases. He reassured the nation of his administration’s determination to wage relentless war against money laundering and terrorist financing. Buhari also reiterated his appeal to Nigerians, especially politicians, to place the interest of the “country above all others, as they troop out to cast their votes in the coming elections’’. Shehu’s statement comes hours after the EFCC alerted Nigerians that there were fake dollar notes in circulation. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has described reports that he has resigned as “fake news”. Speaking at a meeting with young Christian leaders in Lagos, Osinbajo said he is still committed to serving the nation under President Muhammadu Buhari. “Today, they’ve been spreading some information around that I’ve resigned. They said I have resigned; it is all over,” he said. “They said I didn’t attend a security meeting yesterday. I was too busy in my office. The same security people were meeting with me that same evening. Must I attend every meeting? “Can’t the president held a meeting with the security chiefs without me? They said I was so angry that they didn’t bring me to that meeting, that I was excluded, then I resigned! It is all over the place. I have not resigned. I remain committed to the service of the Nigerian people under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari.” The president had a special security meeting with service chiefs and some state governors on Tuesday. The governors in attendance were Nasir el-Rufai (Kaduna), Jubrilla Bindow (Adamawa) and Kashim Shettima (Borno). source: https://www.titiloyeblog.com/2019/02/i-have-not-resigned-says-osinbajo.html Cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd44

Samsung opened its annual Unpacked event on Wednesday with a novel surprise: the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the company’s first foldable smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy Fold opens and shuts like a book, and features two displays: a 4.6-inch display on the front cover of the Galaxy Fold you can use when it’s closed, and a much larger 7.3-inch “Infinity Flex” display you can use when you open the device. Inside is an octa-core processor, 12GB of memory, and 512GB of built-in storage. There’s a battery inside each half of the device, and support for wireless PowerShare for wirelessly charging Qi-compatible devices, including other smartphones. That internal 1536×2152 Infinity Flex display is seamless and will let you run up to three apps at a time. There are six cameras on the Samsung Galaxy Fold: one on the front, two on the inside, and three on its rear. An internal folding mechanism hidden in the Galaxy Fold’s spine ensures a smooth and consistent opening and closing for “hundreds of thousands” of folds, according to Samsung. On the Galaxy Fold’s side is a fingerprint sensor placed where you’d naturally rest your finger while holding the device. Like its new S10 devices, the Galaxy Fold runs Android 9.0 Pie. Thanks to what Samsung is calling App Continuity, users can easily transition from the smaller display to the larger one while using compatible apps without losing their work or progress. According to Samsung, apps like WhatsApp, Google Maps, and Microsoft Office all support App Continuity, with more on the way. With four different colors to choose from — black, silver, green, and blue — Samsung’s Galaxy Fold will be available on April 26, in both 4G LTE and 5G versions. Pricing starts at $1,980. source: https://www.titiloyeblog.com/2019/02/video-new-samsung-revolutionary.html Cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd44

The period of living in Lagos without a car might be one of the defining periods in your life. I mean it. I am totally not kidding. You would know this especially if you don’t have the money to spend on Uber or Taxify daily. Who would do that when you are going to be stuck in traffic for up to 3 hours to and fro? Okay, some people would; but not me. I’m just a corps member, not Dangote’s daughter, so I stick to danfo, BRT buses, or Okada (motorbikes). Don’t ask me how the name danfo came to be. I have no idea myself. I just know that danfos are the yellow commercial mini-buses with two black lines on them and arguably the most popular means of transportation in Lagos City. As I was saying, the bus life in Lagos would teach you persistence, perseverance, tolerance, humility and above all, give you the hustling spirit. So believe me when I say it is an experience that would mold your life forever. If you are new to Lagos, get out your pen and paper and start jotting. This course is DANFO 101. 1. HUSTLE The first and most important rule of danfo is hustling. You must learn to hustle, especially if you are plying a route with limited buses at rush hour. You would have to keep home training in your pocket and push whoever you can to get a seat on the bus. However, in doing this you must hold your bag as tightly as you can. Some pickpockets have found this struggle to be the perfect opportunity to perform some disappearing magic on your valuable belongings. Don’t be like the guy who struggled to get in the bus and when he finally put his hand in his pocket to pay, his wallet was gone. So it is safe to say that you have fully mastered the art of danfo hustling only when you are able to protect your belongings and still get a good spot on the bus. This brings me to the next point. 2. GOOD SEAT WINDOW SEAT The inside of a danfo is a whole new world entirely. It is usually made up of three or four rows of wooden chairs with metal frames and each row is supposed to contain four people no matter how tight it is. You don’t want to be the person sandwiched between the fat, sweaty man trying to press his phone and the woman with three kids that only paid for one spot. I’ve been that person; so trust me when I say you don’t want to be that person. You should aim for a window seat. This would also isolate you from the smell of different things and bodies in the bus. The front seat would be most preferable but if you aim for that and don’t get it, your chances of getting into the main bus are very slim. And let us not even talk about that seat between the front seat and the driver. Don’t ever sit there! Apart from it having no seat belt (like your life doesn’t matter), the driver would constantly hit your knees trying to use the gear and you would feel serious heat from the engine. So to clarify, aim for the front seat (the true front seat) or a window seat. 3. MOVE WITH CHANGE To avoid commotion when using danfo, try your best to move with loose change. You would hear most conductors shouting already “ Wole pelu change e” (Enter with your change). Most of them hate the rigorous process of looking for change while some actually have change but like looking for trouble. So to save yourself from endless banter, move around with change for danfo purposes. When you don’t have change, try informing the conductor beforehand and he would most likely tell you to enter if it is not rush hour but if it is… See the next point! 4. SWITCH UP Enter like that! Yes, I said it. Don’t be asking if there is change while others are hustling for a bus. My dear, if you don’t have change, enter with your 1000 NGN. Now what you need to do here is to switch up. You have to be able to go from 0 to 100 real quick. Being classy and posh would not work for you here. You have to ask for your change quickly. Most conductors would tell you to hold on and give you your change later but some may act stubborn. You would have to become loud and razz in the banter that would ensue. Make statements that assert your streetness and how you would stop at nothing to get your change. Hopefully, they won’t realize it is all mouth and beat you up lol. 5. BE ATTENTIVE While in a danfo, be very attentive. You can make use of your earpiece if the journey is a long distance but be sure to remove it from time to time to be aware of your environment. Hold your phone tightly if you are using it. Yes, they can snatch it through the window. Be wise, pay attention. 6. REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT Whatever it is that is danfo business, keep repeating it. These bus conductors seem to have a lot on their mind so the only way to reinforce your needs is to keep repeating it. If you are to collect 350 NGN change, for example, keep repeating “350 change oo” till you get your change. Once you are two stops away from your bus stop, start repeating the stop to the conductor. You have to familiarize yourself with the phrase “O wa!!!” If you decide to use other variations like “There is!” or “I’m alighting” or “Stop here”, just know that you will be carried past your destination and to the last bus stop. I hope you’ve been a little enlightened by this crash course on surviving the danfo life in Lagos. If you cannot cope with danfo, then you are in luck. I would give you my BRT crash course very soon so expect BRT 101. Till then, hold tight to your belongings and remember that a danfo is no place to be posh. Thank you for reading! For my Lagos people, We want to hear from you. How do you move about in Lagos? What is your danfo story? Haha! I can’t wait to read comments. Gist away! source: https://www.titiloyeblog.com/2019/02/danfo-lagos.html
