I respect ur views alot. as my contribution to making discuss rich. I decided to investigate my microtek 1600w inverter if it transformer-less & with fan or not. ( this what I find) it is serving me well with PWM grid charging function, overload protection, low voltage stabilizer, low/High current settings etc.
I think microtek inverter is not bad at all

Great research, that eliminates the possible overheating, unfortunately some guru's here still fear that it won't be as effective as two individual units of inverter and charge controller. What I use as my benchmark is testimonials and long life performance, I still believe sunny boy inverters are expensive for a reason just like iron Edison batteries. They are both long lasting and need little to no maintenance, I mean some sunny boy inverters are water proof, Mr George really needs to read reviews about such mppt inverters...

i think the question really should be, what is the conversion efficiency of these built in charge controllers?
i personally like to think that you cannot be a jack of all trades so i tend to avoid products which try to deliver
so many functions all in one. experience has taught me that there's always a trade off.

unless we can find a way of comparing the performances of the separate functions and can confirm that they
are indeed at par with their stand alone counterparts, i think savvy peeps will still prefer to go for products
that will deliver reliable performance while giving the high efficiency most sought after.

Yet sunny island inverters are the longest lasting inverters? Its like saying a manual car will beat the best automatic car but bugarti is an automatic. Technology is ever involving...

Charge controllers generate a large amount of heat. So does the AC charger inside the inverter. I want to minimize the heat sources inside my inverter, hence I prefer an external controller. Also I am not limited to the voltage and amount of watts I can hang by the controller within the inverter.

Most of them are transformer less. There by eliminating heat, the sunny island inverters are the best but unfortunately also very expensive.

Maintenance is not needed? very funny i must say..As with any mechanical or electrical appliance, PV systems require routine, periodic maintenance. System components may also need repair or replacement from time to time......So solar panels too dont need routine maintenance? inverter doesnt need maintenance? and the solar panels are not cleaned periodically?

NEEDED MAINTENANCE WORK.
1.Visual inspection of solar modules,
2.DC isolators & enclosures,
3.roof penetrations,
4. AC & DC inverter isolators,
5.Test polarity and operation of DC circuit breakers
6.Clean inverter filters where applicable
7.Inverter disconnect test (simulated mains power failure)
8.Check open circuit voltage
9.Clean solar modules on completion where practical

You said expensive maintenance, all the things you mentioned are not needed in a quality setup. Ever heard of Iron Edison batteries? Solarworld panels? Magnum inverters? Flexmax charge controllers? All these things I mentioned dont require regular check up except once a year, as for the solar panels, If placed on the ground it can be easily cleaned. Remember solar panels and systems are DC current based, only the inverter converts it to AC. My dear solar power has evolved...

Solar electricity is a very good clean energy.But my worries is the high cost of all the processes from procurement,installation and maintenance.Many people can not afford it...why? we are still importing the components,there are very few solar companies who can make affordable provision and thirdly we havent fully embraced the technology of solar.
Secondly we have a very weak government that doesnt look into the future.There is a solar company owned by a women in kaduna through to out sketch of abuja.She supplies energy as pay as-you-go.She has successfully established a good business for petty traders who need light for their business.Currently she is under huge threat by some silly government policies.

In my opinion we hurriedly jumped into solar energy without counting the cost.How many research engineers do we have in solar? Do we have a place to train engineers and specialists? Do we have a sustained maintenance culture?
I know a couple of homes and businesses that use solar,trust me they are seeing hell....issues upon issues which they didnt have any slight understanding of.
Nigeria has the weather to make it work,but what about the cost?
For now we are trying to get our feet down,but if we plan towards it i think solar electricity is a huge alternative power supply that can compete with hydro and gas generation.

Not battery failure....fan failure(sometimes bearing become defective, switching power supply inside fails, stopped rotating...crazy)

A DESIGN I DID FOR MY COUSIN ON A SITE LESS THAN 60ft x 60ft (18m x 18m) ie less than half plot.

I mean different types including Li po batteries. they are light weight but pack a lot of punch and last for years. Thats the direction of storage cells
