Politics › Oyo State Now Runed By Agberos by tlops(op): 10:15pm On Aug 29, 2007
The Oyo State Government on Tuesday lost its bid to compel the striking workers in the state’s public service to return to work.

Justice M.A. Adegbola, who declined to grant the relief sought by the Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala government, ruled that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit.

Similarly, Justice M.O. Olagunju dismissed another application brought by a faction of the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers loyal to Alhaji Lateef Akinsola, a.k.a Tokyo, seeking to compel workers to resume work.

The government had headed for the court on Tuesday to break the deadlock occasioned by a fresh strike embarked upon by the workers since Monday.

The workers resumed the strike on Monday a few weeks after they had suspended the last one, which lasted for one month.

The strike was called by the workers to press home their demand for the sustenance of a N9,400 minimum wage.

But a faction of the NURTW filed the separate ex parte motion before another court.

Apart from the Oyo State Government and the NURTW, other applicants in the suits were the Nigeria Union of Tailors and the Nigeria Automobile and Technicians Association.

Justices Adegbola and Olagunju who sat on the petitions dismissed the prayers of the applicants on the grounds that the court lacked jurisdiction. They also held that the cases lacked merit.

In their separate rulings, the courts held that it was only the National Industrial Court that could entertain the prayers of the applicants.

Justice Adegbola declared that the workers had the constitutional right to demand for their legitimate rights from their employers.

He added that they also reserved the right to ensure that their welfare was taken care of.

He said that the state government was bound to comply with the directive of the Federal Government, which approved the payment of 15 per cent increment in the salaries of the workers.

This, according to him, was contained in a circular issued to the state government in January by the Federal Government with reference number SNC/C/04/5/300/1.

The trial judge said that his court did not have the constitutional power to restrain workers from embarking on strike as prayed by the state government.

Justice Olagunju declared that the NURTW and other trade unions in the state had no locus standi to institute the matter, which was aimed at restraining workers from embarking on the strike.

He agreed with Adegbola that since the dispute was an intra-union affair, only the NIC could entertain the matter.

Politics › Osun State Govt Sacks Striking Medical Doctors by tlops(op): 9:19am On Jul 27, 2007
ALL striking Osun State medical doctors who failed to resume for duty by last Saturday as directed by the state government have been sacked, the state's Head of Service, Segun Akinwusi, has said.

Akinwusi told The Guardian that all doctors who refused to report for work in compliance with an earlier statement he issued at the weekend should no longer consider themselves among the state's workers as those involved would be treated as having absconded from duty.

Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola reportedly gave the order that the medical doctors, under the platform of Osun State Association of Medical Doctors (OSSAMDO), who failed to report for duty should be told to leave so that they won't hold the state to ransom.

Oyinlola was said to have declared that no one should negotiate again with the doctors after he personally met them thrice and urged them to call off their strike which he considered as illegal.

Akinwusi said before the state government took the decision, it invited OSSAMDO leaders to a meeting where public service rules and a court order declaring their strike illegal were shown to them.

The state government, he said, had considered such doctors who refused to heed the warning to resume as having voluntarily "withdrawn from the services of the state public service and shall be treated under the existing public service rules which also regards the period of absence from duty as a period of break of service, which is not pensionable."

He reiterated the state government's stand that OSSAMDO "is not a recognised labour union or senior staff association under the existing labour laws in Nigeria and that the state government was not bound to negotiate with the association on any industrial matters.

But OSSAMDO Chairman, Dr. Niyi Oginni, insisted that his members would not resume work no matter the "intimidation and blackmail" used against his association.

However, contrary to some media reports that the strike has paralysed activities in the state hospitals, The Guardian saw that some medical workers were actually on duty attending to patients.

All medical consultants working with the state government continued to report for duty while some other general medical practitioners did not join their colleagues in the strike, it was gathered.

Statistics made available to reporters yesterday at the state's Health Ministry showed that while 14 out of a total of 22 doctors were as at yesterday working at the State Hospital, Asubiaro, Osogbo, at least three doctors in each of the other smaller hospitals in the six zones of the state continued to attend to patients.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor, Lasisi Olagunju, said government had ensured that the strike by "a few doctors" did not affect health care delivery in the state-owned hospitals.

According to the statement, "it is difficult for the strike to paralyse the hospitals because all six zonal hospitals in the state are headed by consultants who are being assisted by house officers, other doctors and nurses."

The government, he said, had in the last three months employed 16 fresh doctors and over 60 nurses among a total of 170 people employed in the health sector while no fewer than three doctors have had to leave the state's employment in the last two years.

The superiority rivalry between the consultants and the general medical practitioners is believed to be one of the reasons behind the current strike action, Olagunju claimed.

Romance › Re: Is It Possible To Find A Graduate Lady Who Is Still A Virgin? by tlops(m): 12:12pm On Jul 15, 2007
this is a question that is mostly asked by guys that are virgins.Being one its difficult to think you will end with a someone who is not a virgin.I think following threads like this may be discouraging as u find out that the thing u cherish others take as worthless.

Being a virgin is a choice and it could be a hard one too.if a guy could execise self control, i don't think a lady should not do even more.it does not mean the guy is antisocial or shy but its just a principle.while in university in Bremen I had a friend (german-female) that I told of I was a virgin and do not wish to loose it.she said she'll take from me,and it was a bet.well I just got cautios around her till I left,we are still friends because she's very lively and cool.to me i think its just being principled, but its not easy.

yes there are but rare,I pray to find one too.

As for experience (or bedroom antic) as some1 said, you'll learn on the job.Marriage is not a one night stand so u have a whole lifetime to perfect it.

Analogy:
Know that the cost of experience is always higher (having to cope wt some1 that has been wt several men or women, there may be some suspicion/distrust as a result of past lifestyle, STI, etc). its why companies prefers to take trainees,u only hire a professional or experienced staff as a matter of urgency. The professional is most likely intersted in his/her lot.But the onces trained within the coy will after a while be well experienced in every area of the organisation and you will have little haedaches.

dont know if its really d same wt marriage.but I am not looking for a sexually experinced wife.we'll both learn.
Romance › Husband Wanted by tlops(op): 11:38am On Jul 15, 2007
Stephen and Adanma signed the dotted lines and they were pronounced husband and wife. Lydia, Adanma’s mother was happy that her daughter was going to be happy with a man she loved; a man she chose out of many suitors that came asking for her hand in marriage. She knew that her daughter would be happier than most of her friends’ daughters, whose marriages crashed after a few years.

She imagined herself travelling to the United Kingdom for omugwo (baby nursing) when the children start to come. She also imagined how she would be walking on the streets of the UK, taking a walk in the cool of the evening. In her mind’s eye, she saw herself dressed for visiting and going for shopping. She was really lost in thought, and without knowing it, she started speaking to herself. “I would visit some of my friends I have not seen for ages, who reside there. I will be happy once again, they will know that Ada took her time to pick the best out of all her suitors,” she giggled in the church while the wedding was going on.

In her mind’s eye, she recollected the day she went to the hospital to have Adanma, how she delivered her and how the doctor carried the baby and said she was beautiful. She vividly recalled how her baby beat other babies hands down in an internal beauty competition the hospital conducted for them.

She was indeed happy. She remembered that Adanma is an exact copy of her. She looked very much like her. “It is good for one to have somebody who looks very much like her mother,” she said, still giggling. Guests who came for the wedding saw her giggling and thought she was giggling because of what was happening in the wedding. But that wasn’t so; Lydia’s mind had travelled thousands of miles away.

In the background, she suddenly heard her daughter’s voice saying, ‘I do’ and the way her husband unveiled her and gave her a passionate kiss immediately the officiating priest gave him the permission to do so. There was a loud applause and that was what brought Lydia’s mind back to the wedding ceremony. She too clapped and smiled, thanking God for blessing her with a daughter as beautiful as Adanma.

From the time she was born, to the time she was an infant and even to the present time she is on the altar, the beauty has not faded. This is little wonder she had many suitors, whom she refused to marry until Stephen came. “I was really in love with him because of the way he cared for me. I saw love in his eyes too.”

When they travelled to the UK, Adanma got a job after writing an exam there and she did well for herself. The couple was happy and the marriage was instantly blessed with two children. “I never had problems with pregnancy and just like Mama told me, that as soon as I travel with my husband, I should not waste time to give her amiable son in-law children so that she would come over there for omugwo. It was as if my unborn children heard the voice of their would-be grand mother. They came without hesitation.”

They were married for a decade before the devil threw a spanner in the marriage. The marriage was shattered, the couple divorced and Lydia felt bad. Adanma too tried all she could to save her marriage from crashing, but all to no avail.

When she parted from her husband, and realised that everything in the UK reminded her of Stephen, she relocated to United States with her two children. It wasn’t easy for her without a father-figure in the house, but somehow God gave her the grace to see her children as her husband. Her job also helped to keep the bitterness over the divorce at bay. She raised her children well. They are both grown ups and soon they will be independent of their mother. “Yes, soon they will be on their own and you can imagine how this place, I mean the home front, will look without a man, a husband,” Adanma said.

Adanma is reserved and doesn’t believe in having a live-in lover with her, maybe because of her background. She needs a husband. “I grew up in a strict Christian family. My father frowned at illicit relationships and my mother hated it with a passion. So that too became part of me. When I was growing up, I avoided illicit affairs like a plague. I refused to have boyfriends here and there, even when my friends were doing it. I had so many proposals from men, which I turned down until Stephen came. And when he eventually came, I refused to go beyond his sitting room whenever I visited him because I was so careful not to drag my mother’s name in the mud,” she said.

She reeled out the quality of a man she needs with reasons. “You see, I’m 47 years old this year and I would like to have a man I’m not older than.”

But why? Love is no respecter of age. It is a good feeling that doesn’t consider age as a serious factor or hindrance. But she explained, “You see, I don’t want anybody whose mother would feel cheated, whose mother would feel I have hijacked her son. I want a man who is in his early 50s. A widower, or preferably a divorced man. The person should get his papers to show me he is really divorced because I wouldn’t want to shatter any marriage. I know what it is for a marriage to shatter and I wouldn’t want to wish that for any woman. Also the person must be a Nigerian from any tribe. He must be presentable and should not be disabled in any way.

“Such a person would not have difficulty in relocating to the United States to meet me for the marriage rite. I will help him to do his papers so that he will come over here. His trip to this place shouldn’t be a hindrance at all,” she assured.

Readers, what do you think? I think the world will be a better place for us all when a person is happily married than being alone, don’t you think so? Any interested person should call this writer or send a mail through the e-mail address on this page.

Foreign Affairs › Former Head Of Chinese Food And Drug Agency Executed by tlops(op): 1:12pm On Jul 11, 2007
former head of China’s State Food and Drug Administration, Zheng Xiaoyu, has been executed for corruption, the state-run Xinhua news agency has said.

He was convicted of taking 6.5m yuan ($850,000; £425,400) in bribes and of dereliction of duty at a trial in May.

The bribes were linked to sub-standard medicines, which were said to have led to the death of many people.

China had been criticised over a number of recent cases involving tainted goods, and correspondents say Zheng had become a symbol of the crisis.

Zheng had appealed against his sentence, arguing that it was “too severe” he nevertheless, confersed that he commited the crimes and co-operated with police.

His appeal heard in mid-June, was however rejected shortly afterwards.

Zheng, who headed the administration from 1998 to 2005, was found guilty of accepting bribes from firms to register their products without making them undergo the necessary checks.

Following his removal from office, the Chinese government announced an urgent review of about 170,000 medical licences that were awarded during his tenure at the agency.

Zheng’s sentence was seen as unusually harsh for such a senior figure, but the BBC’s Dan Griffiths in Beijing said the government hoped the execution showed it was getting to grips with the crisis.

The Chinese News Agency noted that food and drug safety standards vary widely across the country and reform will be a major challenge.

At a news conference in Beijing on Tuesday, the food and drug agency admitted that it had a huge job ahead to improve its supervision of safety standards.

“As a developing country, China’s food and drug supervision work began late and its foundations are weak,” spokeswoman Yan Jiangying said.

“Therefore, the food and drug safety situation is not something we can be optimistic about,” she added.

She said Zheng Xiaoyu’s case had “brought shame” on the department, adding that anyone who abused their power would be punished.
