It only my enemy I will advise to buy winter jacket from Nigeria. I wasted 1million Naira to buy clothings necessities while coming to Uk! Guess what all ended in the bin. All what one could buy from Nigeria in terms of clothing is just jeans and beddings materials, any other things apart from this is useless.

Nation building as a process entails engagement especially in the form of debates and intellectual exchanges.

Assuming that having prejudiced opinions on issues that centre on national development is freedom of speech is simply mendacious at the least.

What has promoted democracy across the nations and continued to sustain good governance has been the preservation of platforms that necessitate for continuous engagement. Think Westminster.

Personal opinions around issues like euthanasia or sexuality which have no direct relationship with historical development and growth can be respected without even having the need for justification, however to stimulate and precipitate radical transformation in Nigeria, we must be able to demand from citizens reasons for their decisions on germane issues.

It is not enough to come on this platform and state that investments in Nigeria is a risk considering that such statements have the tendency to influence borderline potential investors. You have got to come with reasons and be ready to engage constructively with others who may hold contrary views.

It is only in such engagements that enlightenment can be achieved and learning can take place. Our kids are watching and would ask us serious questions tomorrow. Their ability to be critical thinkers would be better shaped by how much of such they can learn from us.

Lastly, there is a pathetic story I saw on SM recently. Mcedopikin a popular comedian in Benin posted that during the last #EndSARS riots, no bookshop was looted. That speaks to how knowledge acquisition has been pushed to the rear among youths. A lesson from this is that we must ensure that our support for respecting personal opinions isn't on the basis of insufficient knowledge.
This is the most senseless analogy I have seen this year. Nigerians and British who is more educated?

I am scared cos they use to hammer on joint bills, joint account, mortgage in both names, anything joint sha.

Wedding will take place December 24th. We will be applying early next year as against May intake.

I don’t think we will be having any of those join join things.

I know marriage certificate will cover the genuine part, but what about the subsisting part.

What can we do?
Nothing to be scared of as far you have your marriage certificate and it a genuine marriage no course for alarm. I personally applied for a friend to come join her husband three days after their court wedding and only uploaded her marriage certificate and visa was granted.. note this advice is based on Tier 4 visa and not spousal visa as it involves so many proves to show the marriage is real.

Hi Fam.

Wow!
Good to drop in here as a testifier to this place.
Hope y'all doing fine.

Ok so....quick one. Let me share my experiences so far
I now understand why ppl abroad find it difficult to have time. You almost have to plan your breath. Time is really a scarce commodity here. I don't know how all the good ppl here @justwise, @mimilyrics, @stenon et all. I don't know how you find time for this forum ooo. You were and are still a blessing. Whatever way you have been able to keep squeezing out the time to help ppl here, I would say its worth every part of it. Being a part if so many ppl's life journey and being a blessing to them is worth all the effort. So pls as God helps you, don't get tired.

Now....let me say this bitter truth. A bitter truth that ppl on this forum have quarrelled with Justwise for saying. This ppl included me.

This is not the best time to come to the Uk..
IOW, if you have the means to still chill in Nigeria for 6-12months, sadly, I would advise you to do so.

However, if you want to come and join us to whether this terrible tough period, I am not discouraging you. You are welcome.

Let he explain a bit. If your aim is really studying, don't come right now, else you won't get value for your money. The pandemic has really messed things up. The online class is BS. Even the schools don't know how to handle the situation yet. One other major thing is that networking is difficult. In 6 weeks I only had a class meeting once. Till now I only met one of my senior colleagues since I've been here. No one to come to your aid. You are all by yourself. Everyone is trying hard to survive. Everyone is really busy. No one has your time. No one is available to put you through things. This is when you will value trivial things like seeing your colleagues and lecturer to chat and discuss, holding physical meetings. Believe me, you can't fathom how much frustration this can be, esp when we are talking about something that involves more or less the biggest investment of your life yet. This new way of life has affected many things and not everyone is able to adjust to it.

Also, don't think the lecturers are available to help you. They are not available to "babysit" anybody. They expect at the masters level that you are really cooked and there are many things you are expected to know. Unfortunately for those of us coming from a place like Nigeria, believe me, we are really undercooked. Believe me, a primary school kid here will do much better than you. One of my coursemates confessed to me that it was her kids that helped her with her coursework when she couldn't get a hang of it. Her kids were born and grown here. So you get what I mean. It's so easy for them to flow. Long and short, there is so much catching up for you to do in order to come up to the same level with these ppl.
...And yes, ppl are really getting stranded. I already know ppl whom we moved together from this thread and left with the hope that they can hustle it out. They are getting stranded. Pls if you are coming at this period, you are better off with as much buffer finances as possible.

As regards jobs. There are jobs and there are no jobs. What do I mean? Jobs have really been reduced cos of the pandemic. However there are still some kind of jobs in some remote areas far from town. Transport cost on the long run might take a big chunk of the pay(like 30%). The distance is much( to is like 2½ hrs. Making 5hrs round trip for your job commute) hope you can understand now. The jobs are simply available there cos the location is far from availability of labor. So you count your cost.

I am just taking time to explain all these so you understand my reason for advising to chill a bit if you can

However, for all the ppl like me wet naija don tire. Make una dey come ooo abeg. We go rough am. We go survive.

I hope my msg is not all too negative. But I think it will be of good to you if you get the true and clear picture of things so you can make informed decisions.

I wish us all the best we can be.

Cheers to y'all.
I hope to share more and sweeter experiences later

you are not far from the truth. The pandemic has really cause great harm to the Economy.

if you are converting pounds to Naira anytime you wanna spend you would feel like not spending money...... if I tell you my own eh ok hear this I did call a barber for a home service last week do you know how much he charged me? He charged me £30 pounds I didn’t even know it was that much until I converted it to Naira after he went ,I saw it was N19,000 ooo my leg begin to shake ooo because in Nigeria I do have my haircut in a standard barber shop in Abuja and at most it N1,000 with free body massage after cutting my hair. To wash car nko it £15 that’s almost N12,000. But in all I can not be converting pounds to Naira if I want to spend it doesn’t make any sense as the economy is different.

My brother what is “factual truth” according to you ?...
There’s a link there from DVLA site and yet you saying rubbish...
If you have any better information you pass it along and desist from saying people’s information are not false or not true without providing better alternatives ... that’s very rude.
It a factual truth that I got my provisional license less than 4 weeks stay in England and less than 90 days i sat for my theory test. I didn’t cut corners to do this I wasn’t even aware of all those long stay in England before I applied and all went through fine and others have been getting too. Is this information not worth sharing? Or is it a crime to apply for it? Common if you don’t have any sensible thing to say please keep shut.

Hopefully, the lockdown doesn't leave them with a backlog of applications as it did then.

It's true. You must have lived in England, Wales or Scotland for at least 185 days in the last 12 months before the day you take your theory or driving test.
it not true I have barely spent 4weeks in Uk when I applied for my provisional license and less than 90 days when I did my theory test.

If by those things you mean rent and school fees then NO, they are not essentials.

For Nigeria, the definition may reside around the existence of alternatives.

Are there alternatives for rent/accommodation - yes (sharing, squatting, under bridge, office etc.). Ditto for fees - go to a cheaper university or sec school etc.

Again, another way is to gauge the repercussion of not having or doing or acquiring something in Nigeria to know if it's essential. Are there repercussions for not having an accommodation - No (who cares). Are there for not having an education - No (even our president is UNEDUCATED).

Conversely, do you have alternatives for clothes, food (onions, tomatoes, rice, meat/fish/egg), transport, recharge cards, etc - NO.

Are there repercussions for not wearing clothes or eating - YES. One would be first be mad, then die.

Unfortunately this same logic drives spending by Nigerians. This is why recharge cards accounted for 70% of a households spending on a monthly basis. Yes, Nigerian households were spending on average 450 billion Naira monthly on recharge cards.
you only brought out augment to support your unfounded claims. What do you mean that accommodation is not essentials? Are those what you listed normal? Leaving under the bridge or squatting? Does that make sense to you. Education is an essential phenomenon and it all varies on what one believes.

School fees and rents won't just go up since they are not consumables and have no 'input' or factor of production per say. Already, school fees for private schools are high up there same with rents. Their increases when they happen are usually around 10-20%.

But foodstuffs, clothes, transport are subject to everyday exchange rate and suffer from adverse effects to associated factors of production.
but those things are still essentials.....

You see the bolded part, it shows there are a thing or two we need to learn about economics.
There is no hurrah here.

£1 to 500naira (your relatives in Nigeria could buy 1 bag of onions).

£1 to 610 naira (your relatives in nigeria can only buy 12 pieces of onions).

What is there to hurray?

Ask your relatives in nigeria how much a bag of cement costs now.

you are not absolutely correct.... some price of things won’t be affected. House rents remain the same, school fee remains the same. Last March I sent £1000 to my young ones for school fee which come out to be N500,000 while last week I sent the same £1000 which comes out to be N610,000 the school fee didn’t change meaning they have more extra money to spend.

For phones you gave eBay/gumtree/FBMP etc etc...... Very risky though........

You could buy the phone legitimately, but a few weeks or months later, seller blacklists it.........

Best to spend £200 buying a new mid ranger, than £600 on a used flagship, that later gets blacklisted......... tongue
kindly explain more on this.... why will the seller blacklist the phone ? I don’t understand? Please enlighten me.

As at July/August, it took between 4-8 weeks (for those without a UK passport) due to the backlog from the 1st lockdown.
It was faster for UK passport holders because the picture/signatures from their UK passports were used.
Not sure what the current timeline is though.
here in northeast it only took two weeks to receive the one I did for a friend, a non British passport holder! I think it differs from one DVLA offices to another.

Only apply for a provisional licence if you don't intend to travel for a long while.
You need to send DVLA either your passport or BRP before you can get one issued, and they are seriously backlogged.
no matter how backlogged they are it doesn’t take more than 14days.

Good evening all,
Please I need your help. I arrived UK October this year with a tier 4 visa(post graduate program ) , I will be travelling to Nigeria this Christmas break for my wedding.
I want to know if my husband can apply immediately to join me.
What are the required documents for him to use and apply? I have tried searching for information on students that got married while studying but it has been difficult.
he can apply to join you immediately. All you need is your wedding Cert, pictures and chat history to show proven ties! The most important of all is just the wedding certificate!
