PoliticsRe: War Crimes And Genocide Committed By Biafran Soldiers On Niger Deltans by Tofax: 11:04am On Aug 08, 2023
AuschwitzPrefec:
William Norris of the London Times who visited Biafra, reported an eye- witness account in which some men of Ibibio ethnic origin were beaten to death at Umuahia on April 2, 1968. These Ibibios who included old men and young men were apparently suspected of collaborating with advancing Nigerian troops. They were reportedly frog-marched across an open space while the local people attacked them with sticks and clubs.

In a related account, B. J. Ikpeme, a member of a minority group and retired Senior Medical Officer in the then Eastern Region revealed atrocities perpetrated by Biafran soldiers against the minorities in some towns in the present-day Cross River and Akwa- Ibom States. Ikpeme argued that Ojukwu’s declaration of the Republic of Biafra had been issued against the wishes of the majority of the people of Calabar, Ogoja, and Rivers Provinces, who for many years had agitated for a separate state of their own.

According to Ikpeme, the Igbo leadership, who did not like the minority agitation, decided either to force the five million non-Igbo minorities into the new republic or eliminate them. It was on this basis, claims Ikpeme, that Biafran soldiers were quickly sent to the minority areas to “keep down the people, detain or even kill all who dared raise a voice in protest against the idea of Biafra.” It was during this period that the non-Igbos started experiencing different forms of inhumane treatment, ranging from torture, detention, to killing.

Ikpeme himself was detained in what he described as a “concentration camp” and was later transferred to a prison cell where he was given urine to drink when he demanded water. Ikpeme described instances where the Biafra soldiers allegedly perpetrated atrocities against some members of non-Igbo groups. In Asang town in Enyong, from where Ikpeme originated, about four hundred people were carried away to an unknown destination. Another town called Attan Onoyon in the same Enyong was burnt down with many people killed by the Biafran soldiers.

In Ikot Ekpenyong in the present day Akwa Ibom State, Biafra soldiers were said to have shot many villagers. Ikpeme also recounted that similar killings carried out by Biafra soldiers took place in places like Ikot Okpot and Idoro. He equally alleged that when the Nigerian troops landed in Calabar on October 18, 1967, about 169 civilians in detention were lined up and shöt by Biafran soldiers. This same allegation had also been published in The New York Times as an informational advertisement by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in New York. These two accounts, given by the survivor-victim of Ikun and Dr. Ikpeme, portray similar pictures of gross atrocities but with different underlying objectives.
The last President of Biafra was Philip Effiong, an Akwa Ibom man.

PoliticsEx-governors Ibori, El-rufai, Akala’s Children Named Reps Committee Chairpersons by Tofax(op): 6:51am On Jul 28, 2023
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced the composition of 134 standing committees on Thursday.

Children of former governors serving in the House of Representatives have been named as heads of major standing committees of the lower chamber.

Bello el-Rufai, the son of Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State; Olumide Osoba, the son of Segun Osoba, the former Governor of Ogun State and Suenu Ibori, daughter of James Ibori, former governor of Delta State were among the 134 chairpersons of committees announced by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas on Thursday.

Others are Adegboyega Adefarati, the son of Adebayo Adefarati, a former governor of Ondo State and Olamiju Akala, the son of Alao Akala, a former governor of Oyo State.

The junior El-Rufai, a first-timer who represents the Kaduna North Federal Constituency of Kaduna State, was appointed to serve as the chairman of the House Committee on Banking Regulation.

His father served as the Kaduna governor from 2015 to 2023 and was on Thursday nominated to serve as a minister by President Bola Tinubu.

Mr Abbas appointed Ms Ibori as the new Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Despite Mr Ibori’s conviction and jail time in the United Kingdom, Mr Ibori still controls a large part of the political structure in Delta State.

And lately, Mr Ibori appears to be back in the power corridor as he is a frequent guest of President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.

Mr Adefarati, who represents the Akoko South-East/South-West Federal Constituency, is the chairperson of the House Committee on Labour, Employment and Productivity.

He served as commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs in Ondo State. The senior Adefarati served as the governor of Ondo State from 1999 to 2003. He died in 2007 while preparing to run for president.

Olumide Osoba is the chair of the House Committee on Justice. Although, unlike other children of former governors, the junior Osoba is a ranking member, having served in the Ninth House.

He represents the Obafemi/Owode Federal Constituency of Ogun State. In the last assembly, he served as the committee chairman on Youths and Sports. His father served as the governor of Ogun State, first from 1992 to 1993 and later from 1999 to 2003.

Olamiju Akala, though a first-timer, is the chairman House Committee on Youths in Parliament. He represents the Ogbomosho Federal Constituency of Oyo State.

His father served as the governor of Oyo State from 2006 to 2011. The senior Akala died in January last year.

PoliticsAlex Otti to build innovation park, Modular Refinery In Abia by Tofax(op): 8:09pm On Jul 26, 2023
Governor Alex Otti’s government says an innovation park and a modular refinery will be established in Abia to accelerate economic development.

Information commissioner Okey Kanu stated that plans were underway to build the park and refinery. Mr Kanu disclosed this during a news conference on the outcome of the State Executive Council at the Government House, Umuahia.

He said the decision to embark on the project was informed by the resolve of Mr Otti to fulfil his campaign promises to the people of Abia. The commissioner added that the initiative would provide an avenue for the Abia government to address the issue of youth unemployment.

“A lot of investors are showing strong interest to partner government to establish the innovation park. The park will house an incubation centre. Those involved in manufacturing, logistics, power, modular refinery will form part of this park,” the commissioner explained.

On payment of pensions, he said that the government was committed to resolving all hitches. Mr Kanu added that the Abia government was making efforts to ensure payment of 100 per cent pension to pensioners. He, however, apologised to pensioners over the shortfall in the June payment and attributed the shortfall to the historical method adopted by the past administration.

Mr Kanu said the method was being reviewed to ensure that pensioners would be paid 100 per cent of their pension and, subsequently, their outstanding before the end of the year.

The commissioner for petroleum and mineral resources, Joel Ogbonna, said efforts were ongoing to rehabilitate the road leading to the Osisioma depot to make the facility functional and accessible to oil marketers.

Mr Ogbonna said that the Abia government was making efforts to effect repairs on the vandalised Port Harcourt-Osisioma pipeline damaged by suspected vandals. He added that plans were underway to set up a modular refinery in Ukwa West through public-private partnership as part of the government’s efforts to address the high cost of petroleum products.

PoliticsRumblings in South-West as group accuses Tinubu of ‘Lagosizing’ appointments by Tofax(op): 6:29am On Jul 22, 2023
A group in the All Progressives Congress from the Southwest zone, South West APC Support Groups (SASG), has expressed concern over what it described as a wrong sense of entitlement by chieftains of the ruling party from Lagos State.

The National Coordinator of the group, Otunba Tunde Filani, in a statement alleged that only chieftains of the party from Lagos, whom he described as “Lagos boys,” are cornering appointments from the Tinubu administration.

In his statement entitled, “Dangers of ‘Lagosizing’ Southwest,” the South West stakeholders cited the case of the 20 aides that were recently appointed by the president, stating that at least 13 of them are Lagos-based politicians.

The SASG Coordinator recalled the contributions of other states in the zone to the victory of President Bola Tinubu, submitting that the erstwhile APC presidential candidate did not win Lagos compared to his electoral feat in Ondo, Ekiti, and Oyo states.

“We have observed, with utmost dismay, the ongoing unpleasant development at the presidency whereby most appointments are being filled with ‘Lagos boys’.

“We, the Southwest APC Support groups, are constrained to say that this trend, if not checked, might make the Southwest the first boiling point of the Tinubu administration.

“We hereby wish to call the attention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to this ugly development and to state that a situation whereby politicians from Lagos State are seen to be the ones taking all the benefits that accrue to the entire Southwest is totally unacceptable to other States in the region as Lagos is not the only State in Southwest.

“A cursory look at the appointments made so far under this administration showed that the majority of the people around Mr President are all Lagos politicians.

While they may not all be indigenes of Lagos, these are politicians based in Lagos, who have played all their politics in Lagos, lived in Lagos, and as a matter of fact, made Lagos their immediate constituency.

“Looking at the appointments of 20 aides that were recently made by Mr President, we can categorically count on our fingers about 13 of them who are Lagos based.

“The arrival of former Lagos Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, into the fray as one of the ministerial hopefuls is another fact in this direction.

“Another scenario is that if you look at Tinubu’s first trip to France as president, those who accompanied him on that journey are those from Lagos despite the fact that most of them are without official portfolios or capacity.

“This is uncalled for. This administration shouldn’t be made an all-Lagos affair. It doesn’t project Mr President well as a nationalist and a pan-Nigerian leader.

“Recently, the president constituted a committee that will constitute boards of Ministries Departments and Agencies, MDAs, and went ahead to make his Chief of Staff, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the chairman while the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume, was made the Secretary.

This is wrong. Going by hierarchy and order of protocol, Akume’s position supersedes that of the chief of staff. Gbaja is only an aide to President Tinubu while Akume is the SGF.

The president should do the reverse, Gbajabiamila should be the secretary, and then a representative of the party should be part of the committee because the party knows who worked for the president during the election.

Radio caller in Ondo breaks down in tears, describes hardship as ‘satanic’
“This hardship is just too much. We’re in pain,” he cried, as the anchor begged him to control his tears on radio.

A caller on a radio programme on Fresh FM, 102.9 Akure, on Thursday, broke down in tears as reactions continue to trail the steep increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) otherwise known as petrol, by President Bola Tinubu-led federal government.

Identifying himself as ‘Awilo’, the radio caller, who described the increase of petrol to N500 to N617 per litre as “satanic”, said the development has made life unbearable for his family and many other poor Nigerians.

“How do they want us to survive this hardship with this increment again? It’s satanic and this is also unfair, it’s a big punishment for the Nigerian masses. What exactly is our offence? Did we vote for this man (Tinubu) to suffer us? Why always the poor? We can’t cope any longer. Honestly, we cannot cope. This hardship is just too much. We’re in pain,” he cried, as the anchor begged him to control his tears on radio.

He explained that with the increase in the pump price, the living standards of the people would now nosedive even as the government was yet to provide the necessary palliatives to the citizens to mitigate the effect of the subsidy removal.

As Nigerians continue to suffer the consequential effect unleashed on them by the fuel subsidy removal, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), on Tuesday, jerked up the pump prices of petrol to N617 per litre from N500 per litre.

Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, had attributed the rise in petrol pump rice in the country to market forces, saying that the increase was not based on a short supply of fuel.

Mr Kyari said, “They are just prices depending on the market realities. This is the meaning of making sure that the market regulates itself. Prices will go up and sometimes they will come down also.

“No, there is no supply issue. It is not a supply issue. When you go to the market, you buy the product, you come to the market and sell it at its prevailing market price. It has nothing to do with supply. We don’t have supply issues.”

But many Nigerians have refused to buy into the explanation of Mr Kyari on the new petrol price as many have continued to kick against the government of Mr Tinubu, who announced the removal of fuel subsidy on May 29, without providing palliatives to cushion the effect.

PoliticsUpdate: Justice Ugo Yet To Resign Despite Pressure by Tofax(op): 10:37am On Jul 20, 2023
Justice Boloukuoromo M. UGO of the Presidential Elections Petition Tribunal is yet to resign despite pressure being mounted for him and two others to do so, according to new information available this morning.
Tinubu and his team are working hard to threaten them to get one or two to resign so that the panel will be bereft of jurisdiction at this stage. This will lead to replacement and retrieval denovo. In which case, it will be statute barred outside the 180 days stipulated by the constitution and the end of the matter because the Supreme Court cannot extend the time. This is what they are working on to achieve.

PoliticsSSS Arrests Senator Yari For Ignoring Bola Tinubu’s Phone Call by Tofax(op): 11:02am On Jul 08, 2023
SSS arrests Senator Yari for ignoring Bola Tinubu’s phone call amidst tussle for Senate President
The senator defied the president in a high-wire quest to lead the 10th National Assembly. But federal authorities may also have a separate axe to grind.

Senator Abdulaziz Yari has spent two nights languishing in the dungeon of Nigeria’s iron-fisted State Security Service, Peoples Gazette was told by two officials familiar, after multiple telephone calls to his lines from President Bola Tinubu rang through last month.

One senior security officer and a State House aide told The Gazette in separate disclosures on Friday that the SSS arrested Mr Yari on Thursday morning and detained him for “thinking the president is a joke,” as one official put it. Both sources obtained The Gazette’s commitment to keeping them anonymous to bounce potential backlash from Mr Tinubu, who seemed to be shaping up to be a ruthless and vindictive leader after barely five weeks in office.

“He was asked why he ignored the president’s phone calls during the Senate leadership battle,” an official said. “He started arguing that he has every right to contest for the position and decisions about his political career moves should not come from the president.”

“The president was trying to appeal to him to stand down his ambition to make sure any fate similar to how Bukola Saraki became Senate President in 2015 won’t be repeated,” the official said. “We all knew that Saraki’s emergence back then was the first error President Buhari made, and it crippled his first four years in office.”

Sources said Mr Yari received a call from Yusuf Bichi, the director-general, to report at the SSS’ headquarters for an urgent discussion. Upon arrival, Mr Yari was asked to wait for Mr Bichi, who purportedly stepped out. But the senator was delayed throughout the day by a phalanx of armed SSS agents, only to be told at about 10:00 p.m. Thursday that he won’t be going home, The Gazette learnt. The senator’s planned visit with other Senate colleagues to former President Ibrahim Babangida on Friday was consequently aborted.

“His phones were confiscated, and he may be spending days, if not weeks, in custody,” the source added.

Mr Yari failed to garner enough votes for the position, but his Senate associates have alleged irregularities and may challenge the outcome in court. This could set him on a collision course with the president, with officials warning of dire consequences for Mr Yari’s political future should he proceed with the lawsuit.

Already, Mr Tinubu has detained Abdulrasheed Bawa without charges after firing him as the head of the federal anti-corruption office EFCC on June 14. Mr Bawa was looking into Mr Tinubu’s web of ill-gotten assets at some point in 2020, The Gazette previously reported. Mr Bawa’s detention has persisted after more than three weeks, even as he has neither been charged nor publicly accused of any wrongdoings.

Also held under a legally-dubious authority without charges is Godwin Emefiele, a Nigerian banker whom Mr Tinubu promptly fired from office as the central bank governor and subsequently ordered detained by the SSS, a national intelligence outfit whose illiberal manoeuvres have endured despite the country’s blistering journey from the tyranny of military juntas in the 1990s to the third decade of uninterrupted constitutional republic.

Officials said Mr Yari’s detention might also drag out if his colleagues at the National Assembly are not fierce enough in demanding his release, one of our sources said. Like Mr Tinubu, the former Zamfara governor is also a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress. But he poked the president’s ire last month when he declared plans to be Senate President at the resumption of the 10th National Assembly. Federal lawmakers, unlike the president and vice-president, have no constitutional immunity from arrest and criminal prosecution.

Mr Yari advanced his push to be Senate President even after party leaders publicly endorsed Godswill Akpabio for the position, largely on the account of Mr Akpabio’s southern Christian identity and second Senate term. Mr Yari, representing Zamfara West Senatorial District, is a Muslin from the North-West. The party sought to balance equity within its ranks by ceding the Senate presidency to a Christian from the South-South, since Mr Tinubu is a Muslim from the South-West and Vice-President Kashim Shettima is a Muslim from the North-East. House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas is a Muslim from Mr Yari’s region.

PoliticsTinubu's Inauguration: Witches And Wizards Issue Strong Warning by Tofax(op): 11:39am On Apr 30, 2023
Witches warn against scuttling Tinubu’s inauguration

Invites Dino Melaye for counsel

White Witches and Wizards Association of Nigeria, yesterday, urged aggrieved politicians not to scuttle the inauguration of the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on May 29 at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

The group also said Tinubu will be provided with no fewer than 300 witches and wizards to ensure that no harm comes his way, adding that they are unhappy about the manner in which politicians have conducted themselves since Tinubu was announced as the winner of the February 25 presidential poll.

Speaking to newsmen in Calabar, the group’s spokesman, Dr. Okhue Oboi, said they care about the unity of the nation and would safeguard it.

He said: “We welcome Tinubu back to the country. Recall that Tinubu emerged the winner at our group’s spiritual presidential election held about two months ago before the terrestrial February 25 presidential election. Now, we have reviewed the volatile developments in the country. We urge the aggrieved parties to give peace a chance because resorting to self-help will do more harm than good to the polity. There is no reason for Tinubu to be afraid because all the campaigns of calumny mounted against him are mere distractions. We are currently cleaning and detoxifying the Abuja environment where Tinubu will operate from.

“What Tinubu needs now is prayers of good health and long life from all Nigerians so he could deliver on his Renewed Hope promise for better life for all.”

Oboi, who spoke on the forthcoming governorship election in Kogi State, said the group has met with the three major tribes in the state and have aggregated their demands.

He said: “We have met with the Igala, Ebira and Yoruba population in the state. We met Igala people in Idah, Ebira people in Obehira and Yoruba people in Kabba and listened to them. We advise Dino Melaye to see us if he is desirous of realising his governorship dream. If he listens to our advice, he will laugh because the trees and waters of the confluence state will vote for him regardless of whether Governor Wike supports him or not.

“It will be in Melaye’s interest to see us too so he can smile. If he fails to see the witches and wizards, he will regret it because he will not win the election.”

PoliticsHow LP Aborted Apc’s Plot To Scuttle Obi’s Petition, Divide Party –investigation by Tofax(op): 7:52am On Apr 23, 2023
The quick intervention of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of Labour Party (LP) last week saved the plan by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to weaken the party leadership and scuttle the petition filed by its presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, challenging the declaration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as presidentelect. A Labour Party member, Lamidi Apapa, had, in the wake of the court order restraining Julius Abure from parading himself as LP National Chairman, declared himself acting Chairman. But the NEC meeting of the LP, which was held in Asaba last week, was summoned to tackle Apapa and other fifth columnists in the party.

The meeting, with officials of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in attendance, suspended Apapa, expelled Arabambi Abayomi, National Publicity Secretary, while the suspended National Youth Leader, Anselm Eragbe, was recommended to the national convention for expulsion. And to further checkmate future fractionalization of the party, the tenure of Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) was extended by one year. Apapa, who was suspended by NEC at its meeting in Asaba, Delta State, last week, was Vice Chairman (South), whereas Ladi IIiya is the Deputy National Chairman, who is supposed to act in the absence of the National Chairman. The assumption of office by Apapa as acting National Chairman was orchestrated to fractionalize the LP and scuttle the petition filed by Obi.

He started immediately to execute the plan of his sponsors by lifting the suspension imposed on the former National Publicity Secretary, Arabambi Abayomi and National Youth Leader Anselm Eragbe and readmitted them into the party. Abayomi was alleged to have worked against LP producing candidates for Lagos and Ogun States, but for the intervention of the party leadership, who engaged another lawyer to handle the appeal against the exclusion of the party’s candidates in the two states by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Throughout the period he acted as National Chairman, Apapa made no attempt to meet Obi. Acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh, said there was no need for an acting National Chairman because there was court order stopping Abure’s suspension. “They (Apapa group) have an agenda.

Ladi IIiya is the Deputy National Chairman, seconded from the NLC (Nigeria Labour Congress). She is the one who supposed to act in the absence of the Chairman. “But we don’t have acting Chairman because Abure has not been removed. He remains substantive Chairman because a court of competent jurisdiction, in Edo State, has stopped his removal,” Ifoh said. The NLC and 37 state chairmen of the party stood solidly behind Abure. They were also present at the Asaba meeting where normalcy was restored in the party. Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, was also accused of involvement in the LP crisis. Imo is one of the three states INEC plans to hold off-season governorship elections in November this year. Uzodinma, who is seeking a second term in office, is reportedly not comfortable with the wave LP is making in South East, and is working to weaken the party in Imo State.

The LP platform attracted many aspirants, but Athan Achonu, a former Senator on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emerged as LP candidate in the April 15 primaries. This is generating reactions from party supporters. Achonu is alleged to have been sponsored by Uzodinma. A video currently in circulation alleged that the governor gave him $1 million to pay delegates, who voted for him during the primaries. Achonu scored 134 votes to beat his closest rival, Jack Ogunewe, a retired major general, who scored 121 votes. Imo Obedient Movement, after its stakeholders’ meeting in Owerri on April 20, resolved to support Ogunewe, and asked the National Chairman “to quickly implement the recommendation of the Hon. Ceekay Igbara-led Labour Party Appeal committee report published on 16th of April 2023 and recognise Major General Ogunewe “as the authentic flag bearer of the party within the next couple of days or we will ask him to immediately secure the ticket of another party.” According to the group, the appeal committee report clearly captured what transpired in the LP gubernatorial primary election in Imo State and “it looks like what happened during the PDP presidential primaries, which led to the Obidient Movement asking H.E Peter Obi to exit the PDP which he promptly did. “Now, the Obidient Movement in Imo State is asking the peoples ‘General’ to ensure he is on the ballot in the November 2023 Imo State elections even if it means flying another party’s ticket.”

The group alleged massive irregularities before and during the primary election, “starting from the delegate list, which they claimed was manipulated and did not reflect the delegate election most of its members observed across the state and had on camera. “Some delegates that were clearly elected were not allowed to participate in the primaries by the compromised Labour Party Local Government Chairmen.” But Ifoh said the party recognised the primary conducted by Abia State governor- elect, Alex Otti, which produced Senator Achonu. “We have submitted his name to INEC,” he said, stating that the allegations of irregularities have not been proved.
