PoliticsRe: Unemployment rate under Buhari worst in Nigeria’s history: World Bank by Tofax(op): 9:49pm On Jul 23, 2021
There's hope at the end of the tunnel
PoliticsUnemployment rate under Buhari worst in Nigeria’s history: World Bank by Tofax(op):
The World Bank said unemployment rate particularly rose acutely since the 2015-2016 economic recession.

A new World Bank report has indicated that the unemployment rate in Nigeria has risen more than ever in the history of the country under the Buhari led administration.

For a nation, unemployment rate is defined as the percentage of the labour force population who could not find at least 20 hours of work in the reference period.

The report says the rate was significantly higher for Nigerian youth (42.5 per cent) compared to non-youth (26.3 per cent).

The current rate of unemployment in Nigeria has risen five fold from 6.4 per cent in 2010, hitting 33.3 percent as of the last quarter of 2020, per National Bureau of Statistics’ report.

The Washington based organisation said the unemployment rates which started rising sharply in 2015, when President Muhammadu Buhari assumed power, has been worsened by COVID-19, leading the country into recession.

“The rise in unemployment rates has been particularly acute since the 2015- 2016 economic recession and has further worsened as COVID-19 led to the worst recession in four decades in 2020” the paper read in part
The report which was published in collaboration with Rapid Social Response trust fund (RSR) and Korea World Bank Partnership Facility ( KWPF) puts the rate of employed male in Nigeria at 46.4 per cent while that of women stood at 40.6 per cent.

The World Bank opined that the growing numbers of Nigerian citizens seeking asylum in other countries is as a result of economic issues faced in Nigeria.

It states that from 1990 to 2019, migrants from Nigeria has risen from 446, 806 to 1,438, 331.

A World Bank projection in March, 2021 had predicted that no fewer than 20 million Nigerians would have plunged into poverty before Mr Buhari leaves office.

In a report in June, the World Bank warned that Nigeria’s 10 years economic gains could be reversed under the Buhari regime.

Though Mr Buhari claims his regime has lifted 10 million Nigerians out of poverty, the World Bank maintains that seven million Nigerians became poor under Buhari in 2020.

Mr Buhari in an interview with Arise TV crew in July blamed youths for worsening rate of unemployment.

He asked the youths to be of good behaviour so that foreign investors can come into the country.

“Nobody is going to invest in an insecure environment.

So I told them [his ministers], I said they should tell the youth that if they want jobs, they will behave themselves,” Mr Buhari said.

PoliticsIgboho Chained Like Animal In Police Cell In Cotonou - Lawyer by Tofax(op): 6:50am On Jul 21, 2021
•May appear in court today •Afenifere, Middle Belt Forum, Ohanaeze, Ozekhome blast FG

FOLLOWING the arrest of Chief Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho) on Monday, his legal representative, Chief Yomi Alliyu has alleged that his client is facing inhuman treatment, as his legs and hands are allegedly tied like an animal in police custody in Cotonou, Republic of Benin.

The lawyer, in a statement he released on Tuesday, claimed that Igboho is being treated less than an animal in police custody, based on what he termed “order from above,” and may appear before a court today for an extradition order.

“Just about three minutes ago, I got a call from a reliable source from the authorities in the Republic of Benin that Sunday Igboho has been put in a very dehumanising condition in a police cell in Cotonou.

“The source told me that they are under instruction by an order from the above that Igboho should be chained like an animal waiting to be slaughtered. He told me that Igboho was tightly chained to the floor and he is in serious pains.

“While I was talking to the source by telephone, I can hear our client crying and asking that the chains be removed and that he is in pains. But I can hear one officer telling him that they cannot remove the chains as they are acting on instruction,” he said in the statement.

Alliyu insisted that the extradition order being sought by the Nigerian authorities may not likely sail through, given the status of Igboho as a political offender.

“I know that our client, Chief Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho Oosa), would be taken to a court in Cotonou, the capital of the Republic of Benin, tomorrow [today].

“The Nigerian authorities and security operatives that arrested him would be approaching the court for an extradition order to bring Sunday Igboho back to Nigeria.

“But it is not likely that the extradition order being sought for would sail through. This is because of the status of our client as a political offender who enjoys immunity against extradition. Like I said in a press release earlier today, even his arrest by security operatives was against the political nature of his offence.

“There is an existing ex- tradition treaty between four West African countries of Nigeria, Togo, Ghana and Benin Republic, which grants Igboho immunity from being extradited from the Republic of Benin.

“The Extradition Treaty of 1984 between Togo, Nigeria, Ghana and Republic of Benin excluded political fugitives. It also states that where the fugitive will not get justice because of discrimination and/ or undue delay in prosecution, the host country should not release the fugitive.

“Article 20 of African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights to which the four countries are signatories made agitation for self-determination a fundamental right to be protected by all countries,” he said.

PoliticsGovernment Should Return All Lands Belonging To Fulanis: Ex-gov. Dakingari by Tofax(op): 10:46am On Jul 19, 2021
Ex-Governor of Kebbi, Saidu Dakingari, has demanded that the government return to the Fulanis all lands belonging to them to foster peace and unity.

Ex-Governor of Kebbi, Saidu Dakingari, has demanded that the government return to the Fulanis all lands belonging to them to foster peace and unity.

He also called for the revival of cattle routes and grazing reserves.

Mr Dakingari, who is also the Fulani Elites Steering Committee chairman, suggested that the Kebbi government should proffer plausible solutions to insecurity during the forthcoming third tranche of the meeting.

He commended Governor Atiku Bagudu for his efforts to restore the state’s lost glory and make the state a true pacesetter and trailblazer in the country.

Mr Dakingari assured that the committee would follow up all the matters raised as recommendations in dealing with issues, stressing the need for justice, equity and equality to all Fulanis as a panacea to peace and security.

”All lands belonging to Fulanis should be returned, cattle routes and grazing reserves revived,” the former governor stated. “I advise the government as a matter of importance to issue certificates of land ownership to Fulanis as was the case before.”

The governor noted, “Government is fully aware of issues raised, just as it has already started implementing some of the recommendations raised by the committee.

“No matter the efforts put in by the government, there has to be the understanding and acceptance of those concerned to have a positive effect on their lives.”

Also speaking, the Emir of Gwandu, Bashir Ilyasu, represented by Sarkin Gobir of Kalgo, Haruna Jadda, assured Mr Bagudu of their support as traditional rulers towards achieving peace in their domains.

PoliticsPogu,MBF Leader: We Won’t Allow North Use Middle Belt As Cannon Fodder Again by Tofax(op):
•Constitution review, a waste of time and resources.

National President of the Middle Belt Forum (MBF), Dr. Pogu Bitrus, has said that the Middle Belt will no more allow the core North to use her as cannon fodder. Speaking with VINCENT KALU in an interview, Dr. Pogu stressed that the constitution review embarked by the National Assembly is a waste of resources and would go the same way as the previous ones.

Excerpt

Northern leaders don’t seem to agree with this Middle Belt Forum. They say you guys are seeking attention, that the leader of the Arewa Consultative Forum is usually a person from the Middle Belt. What’s your take?

Right from colonial period, the Colonial government recognised the existence of nationalities who were not part of the caliphate when they came in. That was what informed the constitution of the Willinks Commission that went across the Middle Belt and Northern areas to identify and address issues of ethnic minorities, who were not under the authority of the majority because when they came, they knew the existence of Kanem Borno, they knew the existence of the caliphate, so they realised minority groups who are independent. They introduced the Indirect Rule and subjugated these minority ethnic groups under the caliphate system or the Kanem Borno system for their administrative convenience. Of course, the Willinks Commission, which between 1957 and 1958, even drew a map that indicated where these non Hausa Fulani and non Kanuri nationalities are located. The intention was for these nationalities that are non Hausa Fulani, non Kanuri nationalities also to have a region for themselves just like what obtained in 1962 when the Mid West was created. Unfortunately for the Middle Belt or Middle Belt people who were in Middle Belt of the country, the region was never created because the Northern regional government, the Colonial government, the Northern People Congress (NPC), the party that came up in the North and the Willinks Commission (because they wanted to hand over power to the North) conspired and denied the creation of Middle Belt Region. Thank God that these documents have been declassified and we know what happened.

So, whether they recognise it or not, the Middle Belt people have come of age. Even at that time, people like J.S. Tarka and others felt that they should come out with their identity to the extent that when the NPC was formed for the North, they came out with United Middle Belt Congress, as Middle Belt party.

These people, by taking people from the Middle Belt and making them the leaders of their group is a way of saying, let us be together; let us continue to remain as one united North. But when it comes to appointments and facilities, discrimination is very clear and we have seen this over and over again. So because of that we are saying, we cannot be used as cannon fodders again to your fight and your domination and your assertion and using us just to grab power in Nigeria. We want our own identity and that is why we remain as Middle Belt. If they take somebody who believes in monolith North, which to us doesn’t exist anymore and make him the leader of ACF, it is up to them. In a democracy, you don’t have hundred per cent; there are some persons who would vary in perception, in ideology, but those of us who feel and believe they are Middle Belters will remain so. Our people are getting more and more aware that the deception that we are one is being exposed and people know that we are not one because of the stratification and hierarchical consideration in the North – there are those who are first class, there are those who are second class and maybe, there are even some who are third class. We have come to also understand that we have to assert out rights as Middle Belters and promote the ideal and ideology of Middle Belt irrespective of how Arewa view us.

As a way of arresting the Fulani herders –farmers crisis, the president said he was going to reinvent the grazing routes. Most of the routes crisscross the Middle Belt. What’s your opinion?

All we are saying is, ‘ranch your livestock’, and ranching should be community based because Nigerians know their local Fulani. All of us know our local Fulani, whether it is in Katsina, whether it is in Benue, Plateau or the Mambila Hill of Taraba; whether it is in Kwara or south, all communities know their local Fulani.

We are saying that the ranching has to be community based, and not to go and take over people’s land and say you are constituting a grazing reserve, only to leave it to Fulani from Mali, Niger, Senegal, to come and populate Nigeria and be causing havoc in the country. This is not acceptable, it is detrimental to Nigeria’s existence and we object to it. The issue of cattle route, the constitution of the country is very clear. Lands are in the hands of the governors, not the Federal Government. The Federal Government controls only the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Are they going to open grazing route in FCT? Grazing route is not going to work unless the governors give the land, but they are collectively saying, let’s go ranching, and we are adding our voice to say, let the ranching be community based. To resolve the issue of foreign Fulani running over our land, stopping everybody from going to farm, killing, kidnapping and raping the owners of the land, we are saying let ECOWAS Treaty of free movement be stopped and let Mr President voice out to his colleagues that this thing is causing problem in his country. Let each country accommodate its Fulani.

CareerRe: Working In A Hotel For 6 Months Now: My Experience. by Tofax: 9:53am On Jun 26, 2021
SpringofLife:
My experience working in a hotel.

Although I always wanted to write this but I think with the trending story of Chidinma and Super TV boss, it is a good time to do it.

I finished school 3years ago and have been hit by unemployment in the country. Out of no choice, I landed for a hotel work with meagre salary. Well, that story has already been told on another of my thread (check my profile for the thread).

So out of hunger and frustration, I accepted the offer as it was the only available option. About 6 months into the job now, I can say I'm marveled by what I see daily in the place. The level of sexual immoralities in the country is something else.

First, thhe owner of the hotel is a calm gentleman married to a beautiful woman with kids but he still has side chicks. He's someone who travels a lot but he has chicks in all these places. Secondly, the manager is a prolific womanizer. He has this habit of lodging different girls in different rooms and would go round having sex with each and everyone of them. Of course the cost of doing this is no child's play. He probably spends at least 30k or above daily to run these multiple of sex partners. Not castigating the man but the wife is quite industrious trying to pick every penny here and there while the husband is spending big on girls.

Another set of people are yahoo boys. They are the top customers in the place. These guys with their money have been able to bring out the slut in girls. You see them doing all sort of things with our regular Nigerian girls in the street carrying face like they don't know anything whereas they've involved in unexplainable and unimaginable sexual immoralities. Yahoo boys have used them for 3some, 4some and other group/party sex setting. Most times, these boys book a suite to host sex party. it could be 3 boys and 5 girls. I mean even beautiful girls that look calm, homely, innocent and even churchy engage the these act.

And now to the grand patrons, the king of kings and the Lord of lords, the married men. These people take it as a duty to sleep around with young girls. You see them bringing in different girls to the hotel to sleep with them. The case of Chidinma and TV boss was just one out of thousands and millions happening on daily basis. When I look at all these, I weep for us singles guys and the future in general. I may be correct to say there's no decent girl out there again from what I have seen.

Not trying to demonize only married men, married women are not back seat takers at all. They are actively involved in extra marital affairs sleeping with both single guys or other married men.

Finally, I want to dedicate this piece of work to nollywood. Most of the scripts they play are manifesting in our real time encounter.
It seems you've developed some kind of mindset of "i'm holy in an unholy environment, nothing good will ever happen here."
I've managed a 5 star hotel for 5yrs & most of what you wrote there are false.I can confidently say some managers are very professional in their job. Not every men & woman that lodge in a hotel come for sexual or illicit activity. I believe your job description doesn't entails monitoring & taking notes of what adults do with their lives when they lodge in a hotel, or is it?

PoliticsA Story Of Betrayal -'How The Fulani's Betrayed Afonja To Conquer Kwara State by Tofax(op): 12:38pm On Jun 25, 2021
A story of betrayal - 'How the Fulani's betrayed Afonja, the  of Yoruba land to conquer kwara state.'

Ilorin was a Yoruba town which was originally used as a military outpost by the Alaafin, the supreme ruler of the old Oyo empire (Oyo-Ile). At the period of creation, Ilorin was administered by Afonja, the sixth Are-Ona-Kakanfo of the Oyo army.

It was from this outpost that Afonja carried out military duty's for the then Alaafin named Aole.Aole reigned between 1789 and 1796. It was during this period that Shehu Alimi, a Fulani cleric, arrived Ilorin with some of his tribesmen and were all welcomed and hosted by Afonja.

After a while, conflict broke out between Alaafin Aole and Afonja. Alaafin Aole ordered Afonja to attack a town named Iwere-Ile which to Afonja was a suicidal mission and he adamantly refused because a curse was placed by a previous Alaafin on anyone who attacked the land.

While still at disagreement, Alaafin Aole, also called Arogangan (Translated as the mean one), ordered Afonja to attack Apomu, a prominent town in Ile-Ife; this was in 1795. The disagreement heated up to the point that both sides resulted to trash things out with violence.

At this point, Afonja sought the support of the fulani cleric Shehu Alimi also known as Salih Janta as he had both spiritual and military power. Afonja sent an empty calabash to Alaafin Aole signifying his rejection as the Alaafin, thereby requiring him to commit suicide according to their tradition. Alaafin Aole killed himself but before that, he performed some rituals and cursed the Yoruba land , that all the sons and daughters shall be taken as slaves and sold to different parts of the world.

After defeating Alaafin Aole, Afonja and Alimi’s relationship strengthened to the extent that Afonja enlisted the fulani men into his army and disbanded many of his own men whom history claimed he didn’t fully trust. Unknowing to Afonja,
the Fulanis were gradually infiltrating his army and before he could realize, it was too late. After Sheu Alimi’s death. His son, Abdulsalam, yearned to take over Ilorin and clandestinely plotted against Afonja.

In 1824, Abdulsalam’s men shot Afonja arrows till he breathed his last. He was shot so many arrows that his dead body remained suspended in an upright position for a long while.

So much dread had his personality inspired that the treacherous Jamas whom he had so often led to victory could not believe he was really dead. They continued to shower darts upon him long after he had ceased fighting.
After Afonja’s death, Abdulsalam declared himself the Emir of Ilorin and pledged his allegiance to the Sokoto Caliphate. This is how and why the monarch of Ilorin hold's the title of Emir till today instead of Oba or any other Yoruba title for a king.

That is how the people Afonja trusted the most, enlisted into the army and gave his ancestral land to betrayed him.

Afterward, the Yorubas attempted to regain control of Ilorin from the Fulani jammas but failed. Toyeje, the successor of Afonja, led the first and second attempts to drive the Fulani people out of Ilorin.

The second attempt is known in history as Mugbamugba war in which Yoruba people suffered untold defeat in the strive to regain the throne of Ilorin.

PoliticsZaria Under Siege Of Bandits – The Emir Of Zazzau by Tofax(op): 11:11pm On Jun 14, 2021
The emir laments that Zaria has been under the siege of bandits despite the emirate being the location of many military formations and training schools.

The Emir of Zazzau, Ahmad Bamalli, on Monday, cried out that his emirate, Zaria in Kaduna State, is under the siege of bandits.

The monarch said Zaria city and its surroundings are experiencing incessant attacks and abductions.

Mr Bamalli stated this while hosting a delegation of the heads of security agencies serving in Kaduna at his palace. The delegation was led by the state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan.

The emir said the situation is unacceptable and urged the government to arrest the situation before it gets out of control.

He said despite the location of military formations and training schools in the emirate, the area is not secure.

Speaking earlier, Mr Aruwan said the delegation was at the palace for confidence-building and to commiserate with the emirate over the incident at Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic and neighbouring communities.

Mr Aruwan said the state government was doing everything possible to protect the emirate and the state in general.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how bandits attacked Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, Zaria, killing a student and kidnapping others. The bandits continued the siege for many days, attacking Kofar Gayan and Kofar Kona areas of Zaria and abducting many residents.

The police spokesperson in Kaduna, Mohammed Jalige, confirmed the latest incident but did not state the numbers of persons affected

PoliticsTwitter Refused To Delete Nnamdi Kanu’s Tweets Calling Us Monkeys In Zoo Despite by Tofax(op): 6:23pm On Jun 11, 2021
Twitter refused to delete Nnamdi Kanu’s tweets calling us monkeys in zoo despite our pleas: FG

The federal government has listed the failure of Twitter to take down offensive tweets of separatists leader Nnamdi Kanu, amongst other “sins”, as the motivation behind shutting down access to the popular microblogging site in Nigeria.

Speaking on state-owned broadcaster, NTA, on Friday, the minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed revealed other transgressions by Twitter against the Nigerian government.

Mr Mohammed alleged that Twitter and its founder Jack Dorsey have made several attempts to destabilise the country.

The minister said that Twitter had become a platform of choice for separatist groups, to carry out their agenda.

Specifically, the minister said the platform was used consistently to promote activities that would lead to the collapse of the country.

He said Mr Kanu, who lives in Europe, had been using Twitter to direct people to attack the symbols of Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Mr Mohammed said Mr Kanu, the leader of outlawed Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), used that platform to direct his supporters to attack policemen, military men, barracks and INEC offices among others.

“Before its suspension, we made several pleas to them to remove the tweets where Nigeria is described as a zoo where all of us are described as monkeys.

“We also pleaded to Twitter to delete the tweet where he said that if a Nigerian soldier enters into Biafra, it is death,” he said.

“Twitter, however, said that those tweets did not offend their own rules.

“It gets out of hand when attacks on police and military formations, police and army officers became unabated and we said at this point, we will need to suspend their operations,’’ he said

Mr Mohammed added that the mission of Twitter and its founder, Jack Dorsey, was suspect as they sponsored the #EndSARS protest which almost destabilised the country and led to the death of many, including destruction of public and private property.

He said his assertion was based on a published investigation by an online newspaper (not Peoples Gazette).

“The online media concluded that on October 14, 2020, Dorsey actually retweeted some of the posts by some of the coalitions supporting the EndSARS protest.

“On the same day, he launched a fundraiser asking people to donate via Bitcoins.

“On October 16, 2020, Dorsey launched another Emoji to make the EndSARS protest visible on the microblogging site.

“On October 20, 2020, he retweeted the tweets of some foreign and local supporters of EndSARS,’’ he said.

“If you ask people to donate money via bitcoins for EndSARS protesters then you are vicariously liable for whatever is the outcome of the protest,” he said.

The minister maintained the ban on Twitter because it deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet.

He said the government was unambiguous that the action was taken because the platform was being used to promote the views of those who want the country to be divided.

On the timing of the suspension, the minister said the government had the right to determine when and where to make pronouncements on policy and action affecting the corporate existence of the country.

PoliticsBuhari didn't attend late COAS's Burial becos he didn't want to block Abuja road by Tofax(op):
The presidency has hinted at why President Muhammadu Buhari did not attend the funeral of Ibrahim Attahiru, deceased chief of army staff, and 10 other military officers who died in an air crash.

Garba Shehu, Buhari’s spokesman, said the president does not like “this idea of closing roads, security men molesting people on the road” whenever he is out for an event outside Aso Rock.

Buhari, who is also the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, was absent when Attahiru and the army officers including three generals were laid to rest in Abuja a day after their passing.

His absence was criticised by many Nigerians, who accused him of lacking empathy and tagged his administration “the most irresponsible government in the history of this country.”

Some also said it could affect the morale of personnel of the Nigerian army, particularly the soldiers on the frontline.

When asked to speak on the matter during an Arise TV programme on Tuesday, Shehu said although he has not spoken with Buhari on the matter, the president’s dislike for the closure of roads could be the reason for his action.

He said: “I was in Europe myself on assignment and I have not spoken to the president on this but let me give you just one example: The president is somebody who is so concerned about the safety and wellbeing of ordinary Nigerians on the streets.

“Do you know why he now prays his Jumaat in the state house and doesn’t go to the national mosque? Because he doesn’t like this idea of closing roads, security men molesting people on the road for the president to have the right of way.

“These are small things for many people but they are important for President Muhammadu Buhari. So, it is a mourning situation and the president didn’t want to take away attention from that.”

Amid the backlash for not attending the funeral, the president called Fati, Attahiru’s wife, and the spouses of the other deceased officers.

French President Emmanuel Macron has accepted President Muhammadu Buhari’s plea for help as his regime grapples with the continued deterioration of insecurity amid calls for secession.

Mr Macron committed to working with Mr Buhari to fight insecurity bedevilling the Lake Chad Basin area and the Sahel.

Mr Buhari had also appealed to France, the European Union, and global financial institutions to consider reducing the devastating effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on Nigeria and other African economies by restructuring debt portfolios and providing complete debt relief.

“It is in this vein that we solicit the support of the French government, with its influence in the European Union, to lend its voice to the efforts being made to mobilise additional resources for developing economies, most especially in Africa, in order to strengthen the quantum of investments to our economies. This financial support should also be extended to the private sector,” said Mr Buhari.

In a statement in Abuja, Garba Shehu, Mr Buhari’s media aide, said the two leaders made this position known at a bilateral meeting in Paris, France, on Tuesday.

Mr Macron, who hosted the Nigerian president on the margins of the Financing Africa Summit in Paris, pledged his “steadfast support” for Mr Buhari’s regime and Nigerians as they confront the country’s security challenges.

“The French government would absolutely be there on the side of Nigeria, and it was willing to support with everything to assist the country overcome its security threats,” Mr Shehu quoted the French president to have said.

Mr Macron also pledged to support Nigeria in confronting the challenges faced with COVID-19 vaccines, said the statement.

At the meeting, Buhari, who outlined the country’s security challenges and that of its neighbours, also spoke about the steps he had taken to reignite response to the situation, which, he said, included the appointment of the new service chiefs.

The president expressed the willingness of Nigeria to work with France and all its international partners to rein in the security challenges.

According to the statement, Mr Buhari thanked Mr Macron for agreeing to deepen the existing relations with Nigeria.

PropertiesBuhari Blames COVID-19 For Boko Haram Takeover Of Shiroro, Geidam, Other Communi by Tofax(op): 9:26am On May 19, 2021
“We – the leaders of Sahel countries – must also do more to present a unified front to lobby other Western nations, particularly Great Britain and the United States and the European Union"

President Muhammadu Buhari says Boko Haram insurgents took advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to unleash fresh terror attacks and take over some communities.

Mr Buhari, who has been on a four-day official visit to attend the African Finance Summit in France, disclosed this in an article published in Le Point, a French magazine on Tuesday.

The focal points of the summit, which held on Tuesday, were the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, worsening insecurity in the Sahel and Lake Chad region, climate change, among other issues.

“Around the Lake Chad Basin, Boko Haram terrorists took advantage of the pandemic to relaunch an offensive against my country, Nigeria,” Mr Buhari said following the spate of insecurity in the most populous black nation.

Boko Haram insurgency began as far back as 2009 in the North-East, and the terrorists further spread their atrocities to other parts of the country.

Weeks ago, Peoples Gazette reported that Boko Haram insurgents imposed VAT and income tax on residents of communities in the Shiroro local government area.

Governor Abubakar Bello had also announced the displacement of many residents by the insurgents around Munya and Shiroro, adding that the terrorists placed their flag in Kauri.

Although Mr Buhari’s regime repeatedly said it had “technically defeated” Boko Haram, a series of attacks linked to the insurgents had continued prior to the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

But Mr Buhari blamed their activities on the pandemic. The president noted that the fight against the pandemic was inseparable from terrorism while seeking the French support in the fight against insecurity.

“The issues that will need to be addressed are inseparable from the fight against another common enemy: terrorism. And in the same way that we are united with France to wage the war against the coronavirus, we are at her side to wage the war against terrorism with a firm determination to defeat these two scourges,” he said.

“Around the world, conflict and the coronavirus have never been far apart. In the Sahel region – this vast expanse of arid land between the Sahara and sub-Saharan Africa – jihadists have taken advantage of governments’ fight against COVID-19. Unfortunately, acts of terrorism have become increasingly common in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger,” Mr Buhari added, maintaining that Boko Haram relaunched attacks on Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and the Republic of Niger.

“As the instability spread, the networks that supported it grew stronger – from arms supply chains from Libya to the importation of Al Qaeda and Iranian ideologies. Islamic State of the Middle East,” Mr Buhari noted.

He further stressed the need to strengthen anti-terror ties with France to combat terrorism while recounting the death of former Chad President Idriss Deby.

“Now Nigeria and France should deepen our anti-terror cooperation if we are to overcome this scourge,” he said, adding that the countries “must be agile and flexible, cooperating cross our borders to cut the head off their groups.”

However, Mr Buhari admitted, “We know France has borne much of the strain for combating terrorism of the region, and we – the leaders of Sahel countries – must also do more to present a unified front to lobby other Western nations, particularly Great Britain and the United States and the European Union, for further military and humanitarian assistance.”

Stating that military gains do not provide the whole solution, Mr Buhari explained that insecurity makes the economy stagnant, adding that “if we do improve those conditions, it leaves our people vulnerable to indoctrination, as one is vulnerable” to COVID-19 without a vaccine.
