If you want ti truly sell this truck for N3.8M, it is either you don't know about trucks or you want to keep it for longer than necessary. This truck is old MAN Diesel and cannot carry more than 8 to 10 tons. I seriously don't understand the reason it should be N3.8MM. Perhaps you will do us a favour and enlighten prospective buyers on the features

5p1naz: yes i undastand what a gps tracker can or cannot do, but my issues is where can i get a gps company in nigeria and how much should i expect to be charged??
There are several GPS tracker companies in Nigeria, especially in Lagos. The cost is usually less than 100K depending on the company and the different plans. I prefer one-off payments

5p1naz: Thanks a lot for τ̣̣ђё reply, but one interesting thing that caught my eye was your tracker. . . Please enlighten me about trackers in nigeria, i didnt know they work here, id love †̥ install them in my trucks... And these drivers also steal fuel a lot... They Çα̲̅ŋ send ų back †̥ ur village they are just so mean...
GPRS trackers work well in Nigeria. You can install a tracker without your driver's knowledge and monitor his movements. You can use a simple mobile phone as your back end device. And the very interesting thing is that they are usually affordable.
BusinessRe: How To Keep Tab On Truck Drivers by TokyoBulls(m): 6:50am On Oct 03, 2012
5p1naz: for those of you who are into the haulage business like me would know that there is a lot of money in it but unless you get the right driver, you can never run a successful business with profit. these drivers are so hard to keep a tab on for example if they were to deliver a product @sokoto, after the delivery, they then use the truck for their own personal business, especially carrying raw timber with a truck not designed for that purpose and at the end of the day these trucks develop faults. please is there anyone here with a way to effectively keep a tab on this drivers here in nigeria. pls share
This ia a very interesting topic and I hope people will come out and share their experiences.

(i) First thing is that I do the best I can to get 'relatively good' drivers; especially with referrals from 'good' drivers that currently work with us and have good records. As much as possible,

(ii) I ensure that he is married possibly with kids and I know his family and they know me. They know the source of their daily bread so that they can also caution him.

(iii) I ensure all communication with the drivers are never in 'born-again' tones. Drivers are drivers and more than 90% are very irresponsible.

(iv) I install vehicle trackers on my trucks and check up with the drivers' claims before he starts misbehaving. None of the drivers is aware there are tracker on the trucks they drive. They only think I have spies in different towns and cities who watch my trucks. So if he tells me he is in Abuja and the the tracker tells me otherwise, he is in trouble.

(v) I treat them and their family well to minimize the temptation to steal. This will make them value the job as one that brings food to their table.

(vi) I always have back up drivers and make it very clear to them. You don't get a second chance with me. You get fired immediately you are caught, and there is a ready-made replacement.

(viii) Pray! Pray! Pray! Drivers are drivers. Even after doing all these, many of them will consistently misbehave.
BusinessRe: Nigerian Dump Truck Business From USA by TokyoBulls(m): 12:45am On Oct 03, 2012
@OP. I will try to provide very honest responses to your questions based on my field experiences. You need to understand the business and the Nigerian people before going into haulage in order to avoid being burnt. Doing business in Nigeria requires you to be resilient, determined, smart and street wise. Some of your questions are open-ended, but I will like to answer them as much as I can.

1. Haulage business is a high yield, high risk and high return business. You can reduce the risks by taking some precautions. I am into haulage and I know how much some pieces of advice have saved me. You need to understand the services of haulers are increasing. Manufacturing companies are increasing and the current ones are growing. New factories are opening and the rail networks are not functional. So haulage is the only resort now. There are several good things about the business. Unlike the past, several haulers are now educated. Despite all the headaches, Nigeria still attract Direct and Indirect Foreign and even Local Investments.

2&3.(i) Do not lease your truck to individuals; Nigerians are extremely mobile and can live in different places at the same time. Lease your trucks to registered companies and let a third party do background checks on them. Companies are easier to deal with than individuals.
(ii) Get Grade A trucks for the business to reduce wear and tear and breakdown so they can pay you as at when due.
(iii)Spread your risks if possible and test the waters first with some few trucks. Do not put all your eggs in the same basket.
(iv) Insist the leasee instals vehicle tracker on the truck and the insurance is comprehensive.
(v) Do regular checks on the company and their activities.
(vi) Be realistic!

4. The kind of money depends on a lot of things: type of truck, type of trips, type of goods hauled, tonnage of vehicle, model/make of vehicle. Hut expect something between N200,000 and N400,000 depending on the tonnage. I know someone who pays N312,000 regularly for a 15-ton truck.

I think most of the other questions have been covered above. You can ask more questions. Other guys who currently run haulage businesses will do us a lot of good by contributing.

Do you have some trucks (15 tons, 20 tons, 30 tons, 35 tons, etc) and you are not getting good returns from your current deals. We are here to tell you that you're currently in very wrong hands. You're on a long journey. Your truck should pay up your investment in 1 year. We have trucks and there are demands for more. We use (mostly) box body trucks and our clients are reliable. Some claim they get better returns, but we prefer peace of mind to chase of shadow, inconsistent high returns. Are you frustrated at the way your truck is managed? Are you concerned about drivers? You need to contact us for advice or help. We are very experienced and still learning. We will bring smiles to your faces.
BusinessRe: Information Needed On Taxi (cab) Business by TokyoBulls(m): 5:39pm On Sep 04, 2012
chuks4380: pls I have question,
if you get a car, register it and also paint it the authorised official colour for cabs and at the end the whole thing amounts to about 700 thousand and you want to give it out at 1.2m, how much are you suppose to collect from the driver as regards the financial commitment from his own end?
It depends on where the cab is. Usually, the hirer pays between N20,000 and N30,000. My driver used to pay N25,000
BusinessRe: Information Needed On Taxi (cab) Business by TokyoBulls(m): 11:37pm On Sep 02, 2012
chuks4380: my brother there is currently a better way of doing this business, it's called conditional sale agreement.
you get the cab for like 500k and you give it to the driver for at least 1m which will be payable within a stipulated period of about 9 months or 1 year afterwhich the cab becomes his own.
but before that, the driver will have to get a guarrantor or a shortee who will stand for him also while you all sign the dotted lines with your own lawyer afterwhich the cab has been inspected by both parties for any fault. you can also decide to install a car tracker in your car that only you will have control of
finally if he fails to complete the payment after that stipulated time, you can decide to give him ome weeks of grace or you can just take your car and go.
this method is quite stressful and stiff but it's also the most efficient and any driver who is ready to do business will not have problem
All these serious grammar is same as the current hire-purchase agreement. All I know is that the owner will almost always lose in the above scenario too. The driver uses the car badly and dumps it if your pressure becomes too much. The worst you'll do is go to court and then case drags on for years.
BusinessRe: Information Needed On Taxi (cab) Business by TokyoBulls(m): 8:33pm On Sep 01, 2012
I've got t tel you the truth. Don't give your car to someone whose investment is zero naira. My next hire purchase (if any) will be such that the hirer pays a significant percentage upfront and stands the risk of losing same in case issues happen. The reason these drivers behave this way is because they don;t have any commitments and can afford to walk away if it goes bad.
BusinessRe: Information Needed On Taxi (cab) Business by TokyoBulls(m): 9:49am On Aug 31, 2012
For you, it's even more difficult that you're outside the country. You can't remotely monitor drivers. Never! I'm here with them almost every day and they still mess up. I doubt if there's anyone who can monitor your drivers for you. Who collects the money? Who manages repairs? Are they going on hire-purchase?
BusinessRe: Information Needed On Taxi (cab) Business by TokyoBulls(m): 9:46am On Aug 31, 2012
xtremious: Thanks a lot for your reply. So it means the major hurdle in the business is the insincerity of the drivers.Do you think anything can be done to monitor the drivers?
It's very difficult but possible. You can monitor your drivers. I thought I could do it, but later found out that I don't have the time and patience. You need to talk to them often and understand the business very well. You need to study all their possible gimmicks and militate against them. Payments must be weekly and any slight doubt must be dealt with as criminal. If he misses by an hour, you clamp him down immediately.
BusinessRe: Information Needed On Taxi (cab) Business by TokyoBulls(m): 10:09am On Aug 30, 2012
xtremious: Hello my good people of Nairaland.I am planning of going into taxi (cab) business. I am presently based outside the country,I want to ship few cars (about 5 cars) to Nigeria, employ people to drive the cabs in either Akure (Ondo state) or Ado Ekiti (Ekiti State).I have someone who will monitor the drivers for me.
These are the things I will to know:
1) Which cars are the best for this type of business
2) How much can I realistically get in a month as profit.
3) What are the pros and cons of the business.

Any information will be highly appreciated.
Thanks
You're most likely not going to recoup your capital before the drivers run you down. Mark my words. I had buses and cabs for business and now, all of them are up for sale. All of them! I now do haulage and monitor the business myself.
