NaijaCelebrity:
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Kano Zonal Office on Monday May 20, 2019 arraigned one Hauwa Mohammed Sabo before Honourable Justice Obiora Atuegwu Egwuatu of the Federal High Court, sitting in Kano on a two-count charge of obtaining money under false pretense. .

The defendant allegedly obtained the sum of N2,150,000 (Two Million, One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) only from the plaintiff, Badura Kabir Idris on the guise that he would invest the amount in his gold mining business.

One of the charges read that: “You, Hauwa Mohammed Sabo (Alias Hajiya Nina), sometime in the month of November, 2017 in Kano, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N2,000,000 (Two Million Naira), only from Badura Kabir Idris, under the false pretence that the money was for investment into your hold mining business which pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(2) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act."

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In view of her guilty plea, prosecution counsel, Sadiq Hussain asked the court for a trial date and for the defendant to be remanded in prison custody.

Defence counsel, Ladi Oseni informed the court that she was yet to file a formal bail application and requested for an adjournment.

Justice Egwuatu remanded the defendant in EFCC custody and adjourned the matter to May 23 and 28, 2019 for the hearing of the bail application and commencement of trial, respectively.

CareerRe: Employees Sue Dangote Flour Mill For 200million by Tolubory(m): 10:01am On May 01, 2019
classyc:
A Lagos Division of the Lagos State High Court Tuesday adjourned for ruling a case of malicious prosecution and defamation brought by five employees of Dangote Flour Mills against the company and its group managing director, Thabo Mabe.

The ruling will be delivered on an application filed by the defence counsel asking the court to strike out the case for lack of jurisdiction.

According to A.Y. Usman, counsel to the first and second defendants, the court had no jurisdiction to hear a matter between “a master and servant.”

Mr Usman said the power to hear such matters have been conferred on the industrial court.

The counsel further argued that the reliefs sought by the claimants, which includes N200 million as damages and the payment of salaries and emoluments owed them since 2017 further support his position that the court has no jurisdiction in the matter.

He urged the court to accordingly strike out the case.

Counsel to the claimants, Ano-Obong Peter, however, told the court that the salary reliefs sought by the claimants were only a consequence of the tortious claims against the defendants.

He said the bone of contention is the fact that the defendants prosecuted the defendants maliciously and defamed their character.

He said withholding the claimants’ salaries and emoluments were a consequence of such malicious prosecution. He prayed the court not to grant the prayers of the defendants.

“This court has jurisdiction to hear this matter. Cases before the Supreme Court shows that not all cases of the Master/Servant relationship can be brought to the industrial court. ”

“Our claims are based on tort. We believe that if the court can hear claims on tortious liabilities, it should be able to grant reliefs consequential to it.”

The judge, Kafeel Dawodu, assured both parties that the court would thoroughly look into their submissions and give its ruling on June 13.

The five employees, Mohammed Hamza, Olaseinde Oladiran, Abilawon Peter, Shaibu Inu, and Jimoh Olakunle said they were maliciously prosecuted and defamatory publications sponsored against them by the defendants.

According to the statement of claim filed in court, the claimants said the second defendant, Mr Thabo, wrongfully accused them of theft and got them arrested.

They said they were thereafter tortured in custody, suspended from their work and arraigned at the Apapa Magistrate Court on July 27, 2017, despite lack of proof linking them to the alleged offence.

They said while they were being held at the medium prison, Kirikiri, “the defendants published an article portraying the claimants as thieves who were caught in the act of attempting to steal 15 bags of wheat from the 1st defendant company.”

They said the online publication by the defendants against their persons continues to cause them to suffer “public ridicule, humiliation, shame, embarrassment, loss of business goodwill and loss of financial prosperity from the public.”

They said despite their discharge and acquittal at the magistrate court, the defendants continue to place them on suspension and have refused to reinstate them or pay them their salaries and allowances.

They said the defendants also refused to tender a public apology to them for the humiliation and torture they suffered as a result of the false accusation.

The claimants are asking the court for a declaration that: the actions of the defendants against them amounts to malicious prosecution, and that the publication against them amounts to defamation of their character and dignity.

They also demanded a public letter of apology to them in a widely read national newspaper, N200 million as general damages, and an order that the first defendant pay all their outstanding salaries.

AutoJoshNIG:
Kim Jong Un – North Korea’s leader – over the weekend, paid a visit to Russia.

Interestingly, the reclusive Kim Jong Un made the trip on his armoured train.

His visit to Russian comes amid signs that North Korea is increasing efforts to secure aid and restart stalled talks aimed at ending its nuclear weapons program in return for aid.

https://i0.wp.com/autojosh.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Kim.jpg?w=600&ssl=1

The heavily armoured train conveys his 17 cars that include his personal Mercedes Benz that he will use during the trip.

The train is said to be similar to the ones his father and grandfather constantly used.

This is not the first time that Kim Jung has made the international official trip with the train.

Kim had previously travelled to Bejing, China, in this same train.

A lot of people find his choice of train for the international trip a bit strange. This is especially given the fact that he loves to fly.

His fascination for aircraft since childhood is well documented.

His country has an ageing IL-62M VVIP aircraft. The aircraft has been upgraded with modern executive interiors in recent years to accommodate foreign missions.

FoodRe: Eating Too Much Of These 9 Nigerian Foods May Kill You by Tolubory(m): 8:52pm On Apr 05, 2019
[quote author=DanielBryte post=77236893]Fufu is dangerous, Eba can kill you!! Doctors make shocking discoveries about some favourite Nigerian foods that can send you to early grave- Details can save your life

While food is good for the body and necessary for survival, humans are also expected to be wary of the meals they ingest and the rate at which they consume them. Some types of food, if taken excessively, are capable of causing health risks. The onus is on you to learn why certain foods are unhealthy, why you shouldn’t take them and how you can make better choices on daily basis.

Here are some unhealthy meals Doctors have warned Nigerians to be cautious about their consumption:

Egusi soup:

At the mention of this soup, many will salivate as it is much-loved by many Nigerians… but hold that saliva. Egusi contains something called phytosterols which when consumed, compete with cholesterol for absorption in the digestive system.

Also, egusi has a high level of calories and when garnished with few chunks of stock fish and two pieces of meat, it has a total of roughly 700 calories per serving. Imagine consuming it with about 3 wraps of eba which is about 600 calories.

Loaf of sliced bread:

Bread is widely consumed daily across the country especially because it doesn’t have to be cooked before consumption. Bread belongs to the class of starchy foods and overt consumption increases the risk of getting diabetes.

If you are taking in 100 grams of bread, you are consuming 265 calories, especially if it is white bread. Some Nigerian-made breads are also not completely bromate free. Potassium bromate is added to help strengthen the bread dough and this chemical is cancerous. If you can steer off bread, there are other excellent choices that are low in carbs.

One minute Noodles:

While noodles can’t be called a Nigerian food, it has been adopted into Nigeria’s stream of foods such that it is consumed by both young and old. Nigerians go for noodles because it is cheap, easy and fast to cook, hence the name “instant noodles.”

Tests have revealed that noodles contain high sodium which aside being cancerous, causes heart disease and skin damage. Eating too much of noodles is bad for digestion and it also leads to obesity.

Eba:

Processed from cassava, garri is a food rich in carbohydrate; both the yellow and the white type. Garri helps to restore lost energy but a high rate of consumption does more harm than good. A cup of garri contains about 360 calories, 95% of which is carbohydrates and further consumption with soup, meat and/or fish, increases the level of calories.

Consuming a great deal of starchy foods like eba is like welcoming excess weight with open arms.

Fufu, made from cassava:

Fufu is another staple food made from cassava and its origin can be traced to Ghana. Fufu is of good nutritional value as it is rich in protein, fat, carbohydrates, potassium and low in cholesterol. Some are turned off by the smell that fufu gives and/or the fact that it takes longer time to digest.

Research has it that every part of cassava plant has a toxic chemical called Linamarin. This chemical, even after boiling the cassava, doesn’t change its state and this could be harmful during digestion.

Image result for Fufu
Also, under-processing of fufu, which is rampant, has harmful implications on the health. This is because the cyanide content is not reduced to a non-toxic state. Women and children are susceptible to cyanide poisoning as they are usually the ones who carry out the processing of fufu.

Fried plantain:

There is a meme trending on social media about plantain which reads, “How can you say in good faith that the God who created plantain doesn’t love you?”. This is proof of the love people have for plantain. Granted, plantain is a good source of carbohydrates, vitamin B6, vitamin C and is also a natural remedy for peptic ulcer.

However, plantain contains a considerable amount of carbohydrates and more calories are produced when it is fried in oil. Also, the water content decreases when fried and this might not be satiating enough.

Integrating plantain into your diet is making way for ample calorie intake. Taking 100 grams of plantain is consuming about 30 grams of carbohydrates, 15 grams of sugar and 120 calories. Other methods of cooking plantain (aside frying) should be adopted if one cannot live without plantain.

Pastries:

There’s an endless list of flour-based pastries which are baked, fried or roasted and are often taken between meals. Healthy snacking helps you maintain physical and mental energy and it also helps one have control over main meals. Snacking is however, only healthy when it is done to control appetite and meet nutritional needs. It shouldn’t become a habit because many snack foods are high in fat, calories, sugar and salt.

One tends to gain extra pounds through added daily calories if snacking is done out of boredom or habit. Consuming too many sugary pastries could also lead to tooth decay. Endeavour to avoid buying pastries on the street. Home-made pastries are advisable as one is sure of the type of oil used for the preparation. Oil when used over time becomes acidic but most sellers tend to keep old oil in use and keep frying with oil which is already harmful to

Rice:

Rice is rich in carbohydrates and fairly low in calories. It is a good source of energy because it is carbohydrate-dense. Consuming too much of carbohydrate-dense foods may cause one to eat little of other nutritious meals needed for a healthy life.

Eating too much rice could adversely affect glucose metabolism in the body. White rice contains about 4 grams of fiber per cup and consuming it in excess would fill one up preventing intake of other foods.

White rice is also low in phytic acid because of the bran which is always removed during processing. Ample research has it that white rice increases the risk of getting diabetes. It is advisable to consume brown rice or reduce the rate of white rice consumption.

Pounded yam:

A lot of Nigerians love pounded yam and it is widely consumed across the country. Pounded yam is a source of carbohydrate and a good source of energy which contains dietary fiber that helps reduce constipation.

Pounded yam is high in calories as a small slice of yam contains about 330 calories and one tin cup of pounded yam contains about 400 calories from carbohydrates alone. Pounded yam has the highest glycemic index compared to boiled yam and the process of arriving at pounded yam makes carbohydrates more available to enzymes that disintegrate the carbohydrates to glucose.

Eating pounded yam is consuming calories with no real nutrition. Diabetic patients are advised to steer off foods with high starch and embrace foods with low starch.

PoliticsRe: VAT Designed To Support The Poor, Says Babatunde Fowler by Tolubory(m): 10:57am On Mar 27, 2019
Onyemadonald:
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) yesterday explained that Value Added Tax (VAT) is a consumption tax primarily designed to support poor people, and not to create hardship for them.

The Chairman of FIRS, Babatunde Fowler allayed fears that the increase in VAT may cause hardship for the poor, stating that VAT is charged on consumption and capacity to consume. He said: “When you don’t consume certain categories of goods and services, you are not liable to pay VAT charges on those items.

VAT is not charged on all medical and pharmaceutical products. It is not charged on basic food items. It is not charged on books and educational materials. It is not charged on baby products, fertilizers, locally produced agricultural and veterinary medicine. VAT is not charged on farming machinery and farming transportation equipment.

“VAT is not charged on all exports, plant machinery and goods imported for use in Export Processing Zones and free trade zone: Provided that 100 per cent production of such company is for export.

“Other services exempted from VAT are medical services, services rendered by Community Banks, People’s Bank and Mortgage Institutions, plays and performances conducted by educational institutions as part of learning and all exported services are exempted from VAT.
Fowler said some people misunderstood what VAT is. VAT is a consumption tax. If you don’t have money to purchase certain categories of goods and services and you don’t consume them, then VAT is not your problem. “VAT is used to assist the needy.

VAT provides support for the needy, not a hardship on them; 85 per cent of VAT collected is shared among states for them to provide free education, free health services, provide basic amenities among others. “We can see what the Federal Government is doing with the tax money. Look at the rail system, the Abuja-Kaduna rail is complete. Look at the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, look at the education system, the school feeding programme among others. If at the state level, your government cannot justify the taxes you pay to them, you have the right to vote them out in the next four years,” Fowler said, according to a statement from FIRS.

Fowler said if countries such as United Arab Emirate (UAE), Saudi Arabia which are rich in oil resources would be laying emphasis on taxation, Nigeria should also emulate them.
The FIRS Chairman also explained that Nigeria’s economy is only picking up in recent times because former administrations over-looked tax reforms and depended on the depletable mineral resources.

[quote author=mysportdab post=76873344]Football fans were quick to poke fun at Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois' goal blunder for Belgium against Russia on Thursday.

The Red Devils were taking on the 2018 World Cup hosts at the Heysel Stadium.

Both teams were contesting their first qualifying game for the 2020 European Championship, and it didn’t take long for the match to open up.

Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans opened the scoring 14 minutes in after a sweeping team from move from Belgium.

The 21-year-old picked up the ball outside the area and played a shot past Guilherme Marinato.

But Roberto Martinez’s side found themselves level two minutes after, though following a terrible blunder by Courtois.

The former Chelsea keeper, who refused to train at the club in order to push a summer move to Real Madrid, dawdled on a ball on the edge of his box.

Not electing to thump it upfield, Artem Dzubya closed down the shot-stopper, forcing him into a nervous poke which gifted Denis Cheryshev possession.
