Who told you one had to have worked for the govt for at least 10 years to become a commissioner ? A commissioner is a political
appointee and works at the behest of the governor as long as he or she has been screened by the state house
of assembly.

A commissioner is not a civil servant. Perhaps you are confusing a commissioner with a permanent secretary

I don't agree that the North has the highest illiterate children in the world. Are the children of Afghanistan and Burkina Faso more educated than
the children of Northern Nigeria ? I don't think so.

May be among the highest in the world, but not the highest.

It is really sad that a lot of people are going to be displaced due to the badagry road expansion. The govt has to make
sure that those affected are adequately compensated.

The problem is that, lagos' haphazard growth has persisted for so long, so it is quite a cumbersome task to try
and put things in order. Urban renewal is always painful to many but benefits society more in the broader
context.

This is a problem a lot of american women face when they marry Nigerian men. They say the
men are not romantic enough. I have heard this time and time again.

It really is a cultural thing in my opinion because african women do not seek as much attention
from their men (esp. after marriage) as american women do.

I worked with an african american woman once who was in her mid 40's; she was married to a
Cameroonian guy.

She said the guy is wonderful and all, but she has asked him repeatedly
to call in on her occasionally while at work just to see how she was doing
and sweet talk her. She said all her friends' husbands do this and can't
understand what the big deal is.

I told her it is cultural; The guy doesn't feel he has to keep calling his forty something
year old wife at work because that's not how to be romantic where he comes from.

I really find it funny that a lady her age needed that much attention, but that is american
culture for you

A former Northern Minister, Ibrahim Tahir, is claiming that the policies of Obasanjo were purposely
designed for the underdevelopment of the north.

FORMER minister of Communication during the Alhaji Shehu Shagari administration, Alhaji Ibrahim Tahir, has said the economic policies implemented by the admnistration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo assisted in the under-development of the North.

Tahir, who said this in Minna, Niger State, on Wednesday when he delivered a lecture entitled “The Renewal of Hope” at the presentation of award of excellence to the state governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, by the Gamji Association of Nigeria, added that the economic policies were put in place by the government allegedly in concert with the Central Bank Governor, Professor Charles Soludo.

Alhaji Tahir said it was regrettable that some “inexperienced, callous, immoral, corrupt and odious young Northerners were roped into the scheme and they played their part in a most noxious manner.”

He submitted that if the policy packages of the Obasanjo government in the last eight years were critically examined and the allocation of resources sector by sector x-rayed, it would not be difficult to conclude that the implementation of the policies were designed for the underdevelop of the North.

We have heard of stories of people from the south with degrees (B.sc, M.sc) being bypassed for promotion in favor of Northerners with mere
high school certificates at the central bank of Nigeria. How long are we going to sit down and let this continue ?

There are southerners that attended Northern universities and were denied first class honors for their graduation simply because
no northerner made the mark. This has happened many times, especially to our Igbo brothers. How long are we going to
sit down and let this continue ?

Mismanagement of resources and bad governance ar not the only problems bewildering Nigeria. People are treated like second
class citizens based on where they come from. People are made Vice Chancellors not based on merit, but by nepotism
and tribalism.

Please do not try to undermine the severity of this problem. Those who are on the receiving end can relate to this, I'm sure.

How Obasanjo saved Imoke from EFCC net

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had, last week, set in motion, machinery to arrest former Cross River State governor, Liyel Imoke, immediately after the Appeal Tribunal nullified his election, but the information leaked out to him.

Following this development, it was gathered, the former governor immediately contacted former President Olusegun Obasanjo about the moves by the anti-graft body to arrest him.

Events was said to have turned around for Imoke as Obasanjo immediately contacted President Umaru Yar’Adua on the moves to arrest the former governor by the anti-graft body.

President Yar’Adua, it was learnt, immediately directed one of his aides to get the chairman of the EFCC, Mrs. Farida Waziri, on the telephone and directed her to put on hold, the arrest till further notice.

Following the directive, the chairman communicated same to the operatives of the commission.

It is true that we are richer than the north (the south east and south west), but we do not pay enough taxes (especially individually)
to sustain the state governments.

It takes about N350 - N500 miilion naira to run the first generation universities (UI, Nsukka) per month. Can your
governors pay for this right now without money from the center ?

Former Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River escaped arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by the whiskers, courtesy of the timely intervention of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

LEADERSHIP learnt that EFCC operatives had invaded Imoke's No. 27, Suleiman Barau Street, bent on arresting the embattled former governor, who has been implicated in the ongoing power probe.

Eyewitness at the house located on Aso Drive in Abuja, who confided in LEADERSHIP, said that the "whole house was surrounded by men of the commission who wanted to gain entrance to the residence where Imoke was holed up."

Garba Ladan, a gardener, saw it all. He told our reporters, "At about Afternoon, the whole of this area was filled with security men. They were around Imoke's house. I think he has done something bad because they wanted to break into the house."

But unknown to them the ousted governor was inside his bedroom making frantic calls to Obasanjo.

According to sources close to Imoke, "As soon as he learnt that the EFCC men were at his gate, he panicked and began to make calls.

He called Obasanjo. Obasanjo in turn called Yar'Adua, and a deal was sealed. Obasanjo commanded Yar'Adua to call off the invasion. The President promptly complied."

Yar'Adua, who was an under intense pressure to please his benefactor was said to have called the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa.

It was a peeved Aondoakaa who querulously called Mrs Farida Waziri, the EFCC boss, to call off the operation. Her wish was carried out within minutes. The operators, almost apologising to Imoke, left the house and headed back to office.

A delighted Imoke was said to have thrown a party in his house where minions came to rejoice over the "triumph" of their boss over the EFCC. The next day, Imoke left for Calabar to a heroic welcome.

Earlier on Tuesday, Imoke had met with President Yar'Adua at the Presidential Villa to fine-tune strategies to escape justice.

He came out of the meeting to tell press men that he had no fear of arrest.

Imoke is in the centre of an indictment by the House of Representatives committee probing of the power sector. A preliminary report is said to have said that Imoke was deeply mired in the financial ill-dealings that defines the sad situation of energy in Nigeria.

Imoke, a close confidant of Obasanjo, continues to enjoy protection by the former President because of "what he knows about the rough deals by Obasanjo", said a source who craved anonymity.
