Eriokanmi: Iru isokuso wo leleyii ntori oloun? My dad got married as an adult to a grown up lady. Things weren't so bad as they are today in the 70s. Go and ask your parents and they'd tell you the truth. Unfortunately, most of you born into indomie generation weren't opportune to witness Nigeria's better past, hence the way you reason. My dad attended free schools throughout. Why would he not marry early and enjoy good life? Jobs were waiting for them before graduation. So, when you're a graduate with a good job, what else are you waiting for? You marry and settle down!
WAEC result holders back then were hot cake cos Nigeria had a very few number of educated fellows and graduates back then. My dad was employed by National Bank at 18 after he finished form 5 with a good result. At 20, he got married. Mum was going to 19 at that time and this was same with most of his peers in his generation. Bank jobs were paying more than IT and Telecom jobs today. He was able to buy a beetle car called ijapa, brand new by the time he clocked 22 with his salary. Bank gave them and deducted the money for 2 years, in a manner they didn't feel it from their salary.
Life was so good back then. A shool teacher could easily afford a car. Mum got enrolled in a nursing school while dad took ICAN courses while working and passed all. He was admitted into 200L direct entry with it when he was already a chartered accountant. Dad was going to 45 when I graduated at 23. So, do the maths yourself.
The choice we made in life will only make or Mar us and that's why it's good to choose wisely. This is in response to your post. You don't even know my age when I gained admission and you don't believe one can actually get married at 20 years and with a good job in those days. Blame bad leaders for whatever condition you may be in today. I'm not referring to only tinubu, maybe that's why you called me elupee supporter. This still boils down to sentiments we're talking about and the way of thinking of most of you guys, which had placed you where you are today.
Our leader and the real omoluabi, in person of Pa Awo actually wanted everyone to graduate at 22 years, min so he gave our father's the opportunity of free education across our land. I benefited from it in my primary school days briefly. Universities never went on strike in those days. If you enter at 18, you should graduate at 22 and start a life. Is it so today? In America where I once schooled, an 18 years old boy would have owned an apartment, married and started a life, even riding a small car of his own. It used to be same here in Nigeria in the 60s/70s. They even encouraged dad to take that car by national bank, imagine. Na man you be! |

Education › Re: Differences In American And Uk/nigerian Grading Systems by toprealman: 12:16am On Aug 13, 2023*. Modified: 12:56am On Aug 14, 2023 |
So. . .I was just wandering on the internet and found this page
https://www.econjobrumors.com/topic/us-vs-uk-grading And I learned a lot.
I used to be amazed by Americans that get straight A's = 90% in all subjects until I learned about the conversion. Over here we use the UK grading system where A's start from 70% and the best students struggle soooo hard to get them. In the UK they don't use letters for grades.
The grading equivalents are: UK US Nigeria 70-100 A A 65-69 A- B 60-64 B+ (still B) 50-59 B C 45-49 C+ D 40-44 C F 0-39 F F
I was already worried about how I was possibly going to score 90% and above in all courses in case I moved to the US for my master's degree.
Someone on the thread posted:
"70% in us gets you nothing, might even lose your scholarship 70% in the uk gets you first class honors and a ticket into oxford"
So basically if you graduate with first class honors over here, it means your average grade throughout your period of study was an A by US standards (AKA their 90% and above).
First class - A Second Class Upper - B+ to A- Second Class Lower - B Third Class - C+ Pass - C
Also, in the UK most students that get A's score between 70 - 80%, especially at undergraduate/masters level. Someone mentioned that her professor (in the UK) had never had any student score above 80% before.
I also learned that in the US there's more emphasis on "breadth" than depth, that is, taking a variety of subjects/course that are completely unrelated to your field. How you could probably have no idea what degree you're going to graduate with until maybe you're done with your first year. Like, you just keep taking courses from different places all over the universities and then later on you define your 'major' based on the courses you've done and where your interests lie. You could start Universities wanting to be an Engineer and end up graduating with a degree in Gender Studies.
Over here, as we all know, when you apply to a university you also apply to a college within the university. (College of Engineering, College of Medical Sciences, etc) and you mainly take specialized courses only with maybe a few general courses in your first year.
There's also the thing about how a lot of different daily or weekly activities contribute to your grade as opposed to one test and one exam in a whole semester over here. (The exam at the end of the semester accounting for 70% of your overall grade, sometimes its the only exam and accounts for everything).
If anyone has anything else to add please share,
cc Mynd44 Lalasticlala Yes it is possible to make top grades. |

Chronicles of Adams Oshimole, the chronic party “switcher”
📌His relationship with Obasanjo turned sour as neglect of local oil refineries led to the reliance on imported gasoline, followed by rises in the price of fuel. Oshiomhole led strikes and demonstrations against the increase. 📌He faced arrests, tear gas and temporary blockades of union offices, and Obasanjo introduced legislation to make it more difficult for the NLC to strike. The NLC alleged that on 9 October 2004 Oshiomhole was abducted by State Security Services during a protest, but the Nigerian government said he submitted to voluntary custody. 📌Oshiomhole represented African workers for two terms on the Governing Body of the International Labour Organization (ILO), serving on the committee on Freedom of Association. He was also a member of the executive board of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions. 📌In April 2007, Adams Oshiomhole ran for Governor of Edo State under the Action Congress Party, with which his Labour Party had entered a strategic alliance.Oserheimen Osunbor of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) was declared the winner. However, the AC contested the election on the basis of various irregularities. 📌On 20 March 2008, an Edo State election tribunal nullified the election of Oserheimen Osunbor and declared Oshiomhole the winner. On 11 November 2008, a federal Appeal Court sitting in Benin City upheld the ruling of the state's elections petitions tribunal, declaring Oshiomole to be the Governor of Edo State.[14] The decision was based on several voting irregularities.
