Congrats bro TooMuchSauce: My Visa Interview Experience Today (6:30 am, Lagos consulate)
The whole experience was surreal, the V.O was smiling for the substantial part of the interview, I got so relaxed at some point that I had my hands in my pocket; it's funny because I was really tensed before the interview started as I was the first to be interviewed by the man and I didn't know what to expect.
This thread provided me with all the information I needed, so it's only right that I contribute to it's continuity.
Things I did to keep me sane before the interview: 1) I prayed 2) I took a deep breath every once in a while 3) I had gum in my mouth to ease the tension 4) I tried to crack a smile every time I had a chance 5) I didn't pay any attention to the interview of people before me because I didn't want anything to mess with my head.
Interview: VO: Hello good morning Me: Good morning sir, thank you. VO: So what school will you be attending in the US? Me: University of Texas Arlington VO: oh UT Arlington? (Briefly checked my I20) Me: Yesssir VO: Why did you choose UTArlington? Me: There are three reasons I choose UTArlington over the other school that I got admitted to actually; Firstly, I reached out to a particular professor, Dr. Ramtin Mandani who carries out research in the domain of nonlinear optimization of power systems and smart grids, and I think he was impressed with my test scores, so he agreed that I'd join his research group once I get on campus; and the research he is working on currently that borders around creating a mathematical model for solving large scale optimization problem is a fantastic research that I look forward to being a part of. Secondly, I needed a school that offers the degree as an open ended program that would enable me take courses from other specialization subfields of electrical engineering like renewable energy and vehicular technology and MEMS (He wanted to cut me at this point, I just kept going lol) Finally, the humid subtropical weather in Texas is close what we experience here in Nigeria, so...yes! It won't be an issue settling in and starting my studies (he smiled and nodded in agreement) VO: what programming language would you be using for your research? Me: Matlab (although matlab isn't a programming language per se, I said matlab cos I mentioned something about running simulations with matlab in DS160, so...) VO: Who will be paying for your schooling? Me: My dad VO: what does he do? Me: He owns a company that deals in importation of electrical cables and supplies across the country. V.O: Your undergraduate degree was in? Me: Electrical Engineering VO: And your masters is in Electrical Engineering too right? Me: Yes. VO: Did you have to write any test to get in? Me: Yes I wrote the GRE and the TOEFL V.O: How did you do on the GRE? Me: Told him my score VO: And TOEFL? Me: Told him my score VO: Did you apply to any other school? Me: Yes VO: can you mention them? Me: UNCC and MSU. VO: And you got admitted to all? Me: I was admitted into UNCC but not MSU VO: So what would you be doing after getting the degree? Me: I would be taking up a lecturing position at my alma mata where I currently work as a research assistant, then after working solely as a lecturer for five years, I would broaden my horizon by juggling that with providing consultancy services in the electrical power industry. VO: And you worked in NNPC for a while? (He saw it on my DS160) Me: Yes sir, I was an intern VO: was it like a summer internship or something, what was the duration? Me: It lasted for six months.
He typed for a while; and...... Well, you know the rest. Lol |

Click on my profile and check my previous posts. I gave a detailed explanation of how to do it. presh68: Good day everyone pls I would like to know if it is possible to book an appointment even without completing and submitting the DS160 form( The reason why I can't submit the DS 160 form is because I have not yet received my 1-20). |

Things you need when booking visa appointment 1) Sevis ID 2) Gtb reference number 3) School code 4) DS 160 application ID. I requested for my Sevis ID and school code from the school prior to the arrival of my I20 and that was what I used to book my appointment without submitting my DS 160 tho, as I didn't want to make mistakes. I think you can transfer to the other school when you get to US, don't know how that's done tho. I hope this helps righturn: Thank you tosinooo, if i go with your suggestion my visa appointment form will have a different sevis id from my DS-160,because i require a sevis id to complete the application. Would that be an issue? Also how were you able to book an appointment without a form i 20 |
Travel › Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 12 by tosinooo: 9:06pm On Nov 03, 2017 |
I booked the visa appointment without submitting my DS 160 because I hadn't received my I20 form. What you need while booking the appointment is the application ID of your DS 160 as it's also the same as the confirmation number. you need to note down your application ID and security questions as they will be required for you to retrieve your DS 160 application. So if you indeed get the other offer, you can edit it and submit. Meanwhile, I'm not sure you can edit after submitting your visa appointment application as the Sevis ID must tally with the information in their database. So I'd advice you go ahead and book your appointment as time is running out. righturn: Hello gurus,I need help
I applied to 2 schools for spring 2018, I am yet to receive a decision on 1 of my applications (the school i prefer). I have been offered an admission by the other school and even received my form i-20. With available appointment dates fast running out here are my questions
1) Can I book an appointment before submitting my DS-160 (incase i get an offer from the other school, so I may edit the information to suit my new program )? 2) I am to indicate my SEVIS ID when booking the appointment, can I edit it after booking the appointment (If i get an offer from the other school) and if not, will it matter if the SEVIS ID i used to book the appointment is different from the information in their database? 3) Generally I wish to be advised on what to do in a situation like this i.e appointment availability running out and delayed admission decision.
Thank you. |

Okay. Thank you. jangal: Go ahead. Just don't submit the DS 160 form. I mean final submission until you get your I-20. But book appointment straight up. Don't make mistake when registering on cgifederal site. Remember your last name is your Surname and first name are your other names. Cross check very well before submitting the form.
All the best. |

Hello gurus in the house I want to pay for my visa fee tomorrow and book visa appointment as y'all said time is running out. However, I'm yet to receive my I20, although the school has sent my Sevis ID and school code. I don't want to make any mistake while filling my DS 160 form because I don't have certain information which is contained in the I20 form. Can I book an appointment by using the application ID of the DS 160 without submitting it and submit it when my I20 arrives? Thanks in anticipation |

My people, I greet every body in the house. Please I want to ask just two questions and would be very glad if I get prompted answers 1) I want to apply to City University of New York for Master's degree but I need to pay my application fee using money order. Can someone explain how this is done? 2) I need suggestions of schools (safest schools) as I will be rewriting my gre next week and applying for Spring 2018 admission. Got 308 before but I was bounced from LSU and TAMU. Studied chemical engineering for BSc and would prefer chemical engineering or any related discipline for masters
PS : I'm not really concerned about getting funding, it's the admission that matters to me. Thanks |

Thank you very much. I really appreciate this. gaviria: No one can pick a school for you because i don't know the kind of schools you'd like (Tier) so you'd have to decide yourself. But UTD is good and from this thread ETSU seems to give a lot of scholarship and GA. You can find schools using GRE in these pictures, although It's not complete. I had deleted them from my phone, i just had someone I sent it to earlier resend them but he too couldn't find the rest. I hope you and others find them useful. |

The best time to write the GRE would be when you know that you've prepped well and the session that you're also targeting. Are you targeting spring 2018 (January) or Fall 2018 (August/ September)?
As regards tutorials, I don't know about your basic grasp with Basic Maths and intermediate/high level level vocabs but I could say that you don't really need a class room tutorials, there are various smart ways to do that and magoosh videos is a great alternative. |

Thanks a lot. EZEIGBO1OFIMO: if you have spare $30, you can pay for a premium account on usnews....... but if you dont mind, you can consider smaller less popular schools, like 1)University Of Alaska, Fairbanks (admit rate is 45%+) over 70%admit rate as follows --------------------------------- 2)Oklahoma State University 3)University of Alabama Huntsville 4)university of rhode island 5)university of new mexico 6) south dakota school of mines and technology NB: Having high acceptance rate doesn't mean they will definitely accept you, but at least the competition isn't stiff |

It's Texas A&M college station. I'm considering spring 18 admission and already registered for gre which is to be taken next month. Also I'd appreciate it if you could highlight some of the schools that might consider my profile for admission. Thanks. gaviria: Which of the Texas A&M? Because College station is > others( Kingsville, Commerce etc). College station is very competitive. But if it's Kingsville then I'm guessing it's probably the other parts of your application, like LOR and SOP because your GRE is okay for the school. Your CGPA is good and for LSU do they do rolling admission? How early or late did you apply? Do they have a GRE Quantitative cutoff for their Engr courses? Some schools might have theirs at 160 or less. So you need to know these things. Those are the factors you need to consider. If you feel you can do better in your GRE and you're not considering spring 18 then you can write it but if not, there're schools your GRE and profile generally would get you into. However if you're waiting till fall 18 I'll advice you take another GRE and get above 310 (160 and above in your Quantitative). |

Hello house, this thread is very informative. Keep up with the good work. I'm in a state of dilemma and I need some educational advice. I've written gre and toefl with scores of Q155 V 153 and 96/120 respectively. However, I was denied admission into LSU and Texas A&M for fall 2017 admission. I felt the reason is because my gre score is low and have decided to write another but I need advice on safe schools to apply to as I don't want to be disappointed again. I have a Cgpa of 4.13/5.00 in BSc Chemical engineering and would like to go for master's in chemical engineering too. Thanks as I await a speedy response |
