CareerRe: A Harsh Take On Locally-Trained Nigerians by tpia5: 5:02pm On Jun 11, 2013
AjanleKoko: My bad there. Lemme provide some small clarification, since I brought up the topic.
The summation stems from various discussions I've had with foreigners who work in Nigeria, and who all seem to prefer to work with people who have had some measure of experience outside Nigeria. Be it education or work experience.
and how is a foreigner expected to not prefer working with people they can relate to, who share their own experiences in the foreign countries they come from? huh

From what I have identified, soft skills seem to be the problem they have with most of us Nigerians (yes, I am one of them!) who have schooled and worked almost exclusively in Nigeria. Hence the various items I have listed.
so what's your point?

cultures are identical everywhere? huh

i think the op has a chip on his shoulder.

really deep seated issues, too bad for him. undecided

i cant pronounce half the names mentioned in the write up.

like i said, this is a british thing, i even googled the first name mentioned (thought he was scottish) and it seems the name originally belonged to somebody who chased the britons out of southern england in the 6th century? huh

http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/100980/Ceawlin

cant make head or tail of the other names mentioned in the original article either.

Two people love themselves, why not let them be?

And she, i hope she can cope with the life time rejection she will face from the family? I wish her goodluck and strength to cope.
her mum is white (we are told), i'm sure the folks will come around at some point in time.

and if not, well, she still has her white relatives? huh

And why the hell are people celebrating her marriage and new title as if it is some feat (if the article is to be believed)?
i think that's for britain, not nigeria.

if she can reveal where her dad (who most nigerians never heard of), is from, maybe we'll see the nigerian connection.

EducationRe: Cut-off Marks For 2013 National Common Entrance Examination Released by tpia5: 3:14pm On Jun 11, 2013
HAH: One of the reason the cut off are low is because there is no more interest in public schools unity or not, as a matter of fact I can't remember any of my friends or family whose child still goes to public school.
most of the public schools are badly in need of funding and most parents who can afford it, send their kids to private schools.
EducationRe: Cut-off Marks For 2013 National Common Entrance Examination Released by tpia5: 3:12pm On Jun 11, 2013
seems the first batch of the schools were established in 1973, together with the NYSC programme. Not sure what the founding principles are, but i guess they'd be the same.

the students there were considered elites back then, and they also considered themselves better than the state schools. They were strictly boarding schools, day students were only permitted later.

i think they were intended to be on the same level as university staff schools, but being federally funded, that might have been a tall goal, given the nigerian situation.
EducationRe: Cut-off Marks For 2013 National Common Entrance Examination Released by tpia5: 4:36am On Jun 11, 2013
Middle class and rich Nigerians now almost exclusively send their kids to private schools with some of these schools as expensive as 3.5m per annum. These federal schools are still very important IMO. No nation succeeds without massively educating its people.
massive education at secondary school level, is mostly the responsibility of the state governments, not federal.

the unity schools originally started off as elite schools catering to kids from priviledged backgrounds.

they were considered better than the regular public schools.

however, as with most govt parastatals in nigeria, that idea fast became a daydream, along with everything else in the country.

IslamRe: A Month From Ramadan: Another Ramadan Series by tpia5: 2:48am On Jun 11, 2013
Yes, you really like the ramadan season, i remember your threads from last year.

Reminds me of one of the high school textbooks back in nigeria, with a story about two kids during ramadan, and some suya. One kid was mean about the suya and didnt give the other ( poor kid) any, then later felt bad and shared it with him.

This ramadan, hope we dont have to fear the end of it?

Most of their crying may be scamming related though.

I thought there was something weird about the cut off marks, couldnt put my finger on it.

But yes, the scores are much lower than they used to be.

Anyway, i dont think the unity schools are as prestigious as before either, someone correct me if i'm wrong.
