I dont see why Nigerian govt officials and celebrities are not told to not travel to foreign countries and make trouble for Nigerians there, but Nigerians going to Nigeria should not come? I might be missing something sha. |

friends today, enemies tomorrow.
always fear God in everything you do.
the day God decides to hear the cry of the oppressed. . . . . . . . .you will know there is no other God besides the Lord.
A day with the Lord is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like a day. |

excellencyabia1: Why is it that God does not answer people until the issue gets out of hand or someone dies. Is it that he don't have the same equal feelings for all? Can you explain better? God says it is not His will that anyone should perish. If things appear otherwise, then it is due to people and/or principalities. |

the names are even from different parts of Africa. According to the write up, Makeda is an Ethiopian name meaning queen. I think I agree this naming pattern might affect the innocent baby. Just give her a Portuguese name. If the father is Afreeka instead of Africa, why must the baby be the one to carry traditional naming patterns? |

nextstep: I don't know about the veracity of this particular story, but I've observed this phenomenon in several countries where language imperialism still holds sway, albeit in subtle ways.
I doubt the officials would object to naming the child Mary (Hebrew), Katherine (English), Rosaria (Spanish), Stephanie (French), Heidi (German), or Anastasia (Greek). None of these are Portuguese sounding. Are you telling me that parents from other parts of the world who reside in Brazil are denied their choice of baby names to reflect their own origin?
This is a racist and ignorant policy. Yoruba names are just as valid as names from other countries in Europe. Yes, the child may be subject to some bullying in school (but shouldn't teachers and other adults be sensitized to prevent children from doing it), but that is not sufficient reason to deny a child her heritage. if that's their law (I dont know though), then the parents should make the child's name sound more Portuguese. I dont see anything to fight over. |

heo88: That will not work. The composition of the Portuguese language is such that it greatly diverges from the yoruba language. Consequently if they choose a more 'Portuguese sounding' name, this will completely change the meaning, thereby defeating the initial purpose. seems Foluke means surrendered into the hands of God, therefore the literal translation into Portuguese would be Rendeu-se nas maos de Deus (from google). They can try contracting it into a name since the meaning can also be expressed in their native Portuguese. |

A testament to human endurance and preservation and sheer will to live. There's the little matter of the Pulitzer it won too. Read some books after but I just wanted to rave on this one it was a bittersweet classic. |
