CrimeAgba Jalingo: Abba Kyari Locked Me In Car Trunk From Lagos To Calabar – Activist by treesun(op): 7:34pm On Mar 07, 2022
Journalist and activist, Agba Jalingo, has narrated how suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, locked him up in a car trunk and drove him from Lagos State to Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

The activist, in a statement on Monday, also hit operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency over their failure to handcuff Kyari and other suspects in court on Monday.

Kyari and other co-defendants appeared before an Abuja court on Monday after the Federal Government, through the NDLEA, arraigned him and others on eight counts bordering on conspiracy, obstruction, and dealing in cocaine, and other related offences.

While two of Kyari’s accomplices pleaded guilty to the charges preferred against them, the embattled former head of the Intelligence Response Team said he was innocent.

He was thereafter denied bail by Justice Emeka Nwite who adjourned the matter till Monday and ordered that Kyari and the other defendants be remanded in NDLEA custody.

Commenting on the appearance of Kyari in court on Monday, Jalingo accused security agencies of giving preferential treatment to the cop.

Jalingo was in 2019 detained for 179 days at the Afokang Prison in Calabar following an allegation of treason by the Cross River State Governor, Benedict Ayade.

He was subsequently released on February 17, 2020, on bail.

The activist on Monday recalled his prison ordeal and revealed that Kyari and ACP Sunday Ubua (also in NDLEA’s net) drove him by road in a car trunk from Lagos to Calabar.

Jalingo said, “Abba Kyari and ACP Ubua were paid by the Cross River Government to arrest me from Lagos, drive me by road in the booth of a Toyota Highlander and hand over to Calabar. I will never forget and don’t ask me to.”

“I was charged. Every day I appeared in court, I arrived with my hands and handcuffs lifted in the air.

“Today, these men are in court, the same men who enjoyed parading their own suspects gleefully in the media, even against the law, they are now covering their faces. Covering their faces from what exactly! The same cameras they flaunted in the faces of those they kept and refused to even take to court?” he asked.

The ‘super’ cop was last year enmeshed in a fraud case involving Ramon Abbas aka Hushpuppi and an American court had ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation to arrest him.

After about a year of footdragging, the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, recently okayed the extradition of Kyari to the United States but many observers have pointed out that the extradition process has hit a brick wall with the NDLEA’s case.

Thank God for saving our democracy once again. HE Buni went too far and we would have had a serious national crisis with security implications.

After several postponements of APC convention, he announced the latest one as March 26 and immediately jetted out on the pretense of ill health. He did not hand over and did not do as little as inagurate the essential committees to plan and execute the tasks leading to the convention.

Sincerely, many will agree with Prof Sagay that HE Buni behaved irresponsibly and deserved to be sent packing.

On the mandate of Asiwaju Tinubu I stand. Please support and vote for Asiwaju Tinubu.

Only patriotic Nigerians whose hearts are not filled with hatred, bitterness and bigotry are on board the BAT 2023 winning train.

Patriotic Nigerians on the BAT 2023 winning train are the Nigerians who have a stake in Nigeria and genuinely want to see Nigeria flourish, they are the Nigerians who will rather love than hate, who will rather build than burn/destroy and who will rather bless their nation than curse it.
They are not bigoted tribesmen and those who spread hate against their fellow human being.

Asiwaju Tinubu is a brilliant visionary leader who is a Patriot to the core. He will keep his promise to take Nigeria to greater heights.

PoliticsOnly Leaders Like Buhari Can Tackle Nigeria’s Security Challenges – Osinbajo by treesun(op): 8:28pm On Mar 06, 2022
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has disclosed that to effectively tackle Nigeria’s security challenges, the country would need leaders in the mould of his principal, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

He also argued that only few administrations faced the plethora of security challenges currently bedevilling the country before Buhari took over in 2015.

The vice president stated this on Saturday in Delta State, where he paid courtesy calls to the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, HRM Dr. Emmanuel Ekemejewan Sideso; and the Olu of Warri, HRM Ògíamẹ̀ Atúwàtse III.

This was contained in a statement on Sunday by Osinbajo’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, titled, Ósinbajo in Delta, visits Olu of Warri, Ovie of Uvwie, says collaboration with traditional rulers is critical now’.

While emphasizing the Buhari regime’s three-pronged focus on improving the economy, security and the fight against corruption, Osinbajo noted that the administration was battling enormous security challenges.

He said, “We also recognize, especially with security, that very few administrations, have been confronted with the plethora of security challenges that we have been confronted with.

“Frankly, when you look at the sheer number and range of those security challenges, it is evident that it is necessary to have a leader such as President Buhari to be able to even take on those challenges.”

Osinbajo, however, stressed the importance of collaboration between traditional rulers across the country and government at all levels, saying security challenges facing the country in recent times cannot be left alone for the government to tackle.

Speaking at the Palace of the Olu of Warri, the vice president stated that, “the role of the traditional council, the traditional rulership in our country is absolutely critical to security; and I am happy that this is something that you also not only recognize, but accept as a major function of the traditional rulership.”

Aside from the major roles of the security agencies in ensuring security, the vice president observed that traditional rulers in the country also have vital roles to play in their respective communities because of their moral authority.

“We recognize that the traditional rulership of our country holds a moral place in the live and esteem of our people, and it is that moral place that we, very frequently, have to call upon, in order to mediate some of the conflicts that give rise to the security challenges that we have,” he said.

While again congratulating the Olu of Warri on his ascension, Osinbajo stated that “the ascension to the throne of your fathers would be for the benefit of the community and nation.”

“I want to say that the reason, first, is because you bring to this stool, not just the energy and farsightedness; but more importantly, your antecedents in business, in innovation and entrepreneurship. So, many are looking to see how this will benefit not just Warri but also our nation.”

In his remarks, the Olu of Warri described the vice president’s visit as a ‘homecoming,’ and thanked him for his good works as Buhari’s deputy and for ‘putting Nigeria first.’

“We thank you for the good work that you have been doing; supporting the President and putting Nigeria first. Please be assured that our prayers are continually with you and with the nation in general.

“It is our prayer that the Lord who brought you here safely will take you back safely and in all your endeavours going forward as your administration finishes in the next one year. You will finish strong, you will finish well; and by the Grace of God, I am sure we will be seeing more of you in different capacities, and we look forward to that.”

PoliticsRe: Fuel Scarcity, No Electricity: Nigerians Are Really Suffering – Ben Bruce by treesun: 9:26am On Mar 04, 2022
backbencher:
No, we are not suffering

This is the logical conclusion of underpaying both the power and petroleum sector in the name of subsides for over 5 decades because , poverty

When you pay N162 for something thag really costs 300 naira and above per liter, and when you pay 71 naira for something that costs 83 naira and above per kwh, this is what you get. Bad service, sabotage, corruption, etc. All because you do not pay the money that these sectors need to operate fully.

We have GSM because in the days of bad service, we paid them what they demanded, and at the end they used the profit they made to fix up our working telecoms sector with no gofment money

Even the yam you buy , you can buy it because your farmer gets to sell the yam at the price he or she wants.

So why can't we pay the petroleum and power sector the prices they want to set? Not the prices government sets for them so that they.can pay subsidy that is insufficient?

We don't have light and petrol because we do not want to pay them their price. And thus they cannot make a profit that they would use to give us what we want

You cannot pay for power and petrol below their cost of production and expect good power supply and good qulaity petrol produced from good quality refineries. At the end, you end up with a mess.

This time, let's be realistic. Years of subsides are not helping us. Let's pay the market price for petrol and power. YES....I KNOW....PRICES WILL GO UP AND WE WILL ALL STARVE.....but things will work better , and we may even get more investment, more jobs, more revenue in form of export revenue and taxation revenue...SO THAT WE DO NOT STARVE FOLKS...and eventually lower prices.
Your head is nut! You will be backbencher!
PoliticsDemocracy Has Declined Under Buhari — Ayu by treesun(op): 9:14am On Mar 04, 2022
The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, on Thursday in Abuja, claimed that the party won the 2019 presidential election.

He also argued that democratic values in Nigeria have steadily declined in the past seven years under the current regime.

Ayu said this when he received in audience a seven-person delegation of the European Union Election Observer Mission, led by its Chief Election Observer, Maria Arena.

According to a statement on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, Simon Imobo-Tswam, Ayu told the EU delegation that its report on the 2019 general elections reflected the drawbacks saying “we will keep complaining as long these undemocratic practices subsist.”

“We believe we won the 2019 presidential elections. We have the evidence. But justice was not done.

“Now that we are moving towards another election in 2023, it’s very important that we stress the need for the electoral umpire to be genuinely independent as its name implies,” he said.

He boasted that the PDP, in its 16 years in power, not only safeguarded Nigerian democracy, but also established institutions that strengthened it.

According to him, PDP “believes fiercely in democracy and its transparent processes.”

The former lawmaker also lamented that rather than improve on PDP’s legacy, Nigeria’s “hard-won democracy” was witnessing a steady depreciation under the APC.

“We are worried that instead of strengthening the democratic process, which will better serve the people, we are seeing a sustained decline in those democratic practices; the conduct of compromised elections, the use of security agents to attack judges, to attack citizens instead of protecting them, and to subvert the electoral processes.

“We have evidence and we stand by our position. These are not just empty pronouncements.”

The National Secretary of the APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Dr John Akpanudoedehe, neither picked his calls not responded to a text message sent to him for reaction on Thursday.

PoliticsMy Administration Driven By Simple Desire, Says Sanwo-Olu by treesun(op):
The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has disclosed that his administration is driven by the “simple desire” of making Lagos a better place for all and sundry.

Sanwo-Olu stated this when he paid a working visit to Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos state on Wednesday.

A statement by his spokesman, Gboyega Akosile, titled, ‘Sanwo-Olu: Infrastructure delivery in Eti-Osa, a top priority in our plan’, said Sanwo-Olu inaugurated the newly constructed Sangotedo market built by the LCDA during the visit.

The governor, who described Eti-Osa area as “an important economic corridor” of Lagos, said his visit was to personally take stock of the ongoing government’s development projects and to get undiluted feedback from the residents on the interventions.

Sanwo-Olu said he was elated with development activities initiated by all the four local councils making up Eti-Osa, which, the governor said, are supportive of the state’s interventions.

As the closest tier of government to the people, the Governor observed that the councils had prudently managed their resources, which enabled them to drive development from the grassroots.

He said: “As elected officials, we embrace every opportunity to visit and engage with our people to give account of our stewardship of the resources entrusted to our care.

“We consider visits like this an opportunity to see first-hand how well the various local governments, the closest tier of government to the people, are implementing our collective governance agenda, using our Government’s development blueprint known as THEMES agenda.

“Our administration is driven by the simple desire to deliver the dividends of democracy in every sector and in every neighborhood to ensure that no one is left behind.

“And we certainly have made sure that Eti-Osa is not left behind, given the wave of infrastructural development we have initiated in this important economic corridor of our State.

“We have completed numerous road reconstruction projects and getting other infrastructure projects done to give our people a new lease of life.”

Furthermore, the governor promised to accelerate construction activities on the ongoing projects in the area, while appealing to residents to bear the pain of the road construction in the Eti-Osa corridor with patience.

He said: “Tangible benefits being delivered consistently and create new socio-economic opportunities for the people.

“This is what good governance is all about. We will not relent in this regard. Three years on, we have been able to make it abundantly clear that power is to be wielded in service of the people. I am pleased that our local councils are as committed as the State Government.”

CelebritiesKate Henshaw Laments Worsening Fuel Scarcity, Calls For Action by treesun(op): 10:13am On Mar 02, 2022
Nollywood veteran, Kate Henshaw, on Wednesday lamented the worsening scarcity of petrol products in the country.

The actress shared a video on her Instagram page, where she called on Nigerians to take actions concerning the future leaders of the country.

This was as she faulted the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) for jetting out of the country amid fuel scarcity crisis.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that Buhari on Tuesday, departed Abuja for Nairobi, Kenya, where he was billed to participate in the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Environmental Programme scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

He will, thereafter, proceed to London, United Kingdom, for routine medical checks that will last for a maximum of two weeks.

The actress expressed her displeasure concerning Buhari’s travel, noting that since the president doubled as the Petroleum Minister of the country, he would have done better.

She said, “With all due respect, we have Mr President who doubles as the Petroleum Minister. He has jetted out to go and look after himself. Nobody cares.”

PoliticsSANs Reject Immunity For CJN, Others As National Assembly Votes Today by treesun(op): 12:19pm On Mar 01, 2022
Some Senior Advocates of Nigeria on Monday rejected the proposed immunity clause for the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Senate President just as voting on the amendment to the 1999 Constitution begins on Tuesday (today).

The Joint Senate and House of Representatives Special Ad Hoc Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, had last Wednesday laid its report and recommended 68 amendments, which were based on private members and executive bills as well as memoranda received from the public during its zonal public hearings.

Currently, only the President, Vice-President, the 36 governors and 36 deputy governors enjoy immunity.

Some SANs who spoke in separate interviews with our correspondent on Monday described the attempt to confer immunity on more public officers as unnecessary.

Adegoke Rasheed (SAN), said this was not the first attempt by the National Assembly to confer immunity on presiding officers, adding that the privileged immunity they enjoy is enough.

He described the decision to extend the same to the CJN as nothing but a bribe.

Adegoke said, “The Legislative Privileges Act of 2017 actually tried to confer immunity on presiding officers of the National Assembly which we found unconstitutional. I filed a case which is still pending at the Federal High Court challenging the constitutionality of that, it was pursuant to that they wanted to amend the constitution so that they could insert that provision into the constitution to cure the defect in the Legislative Privileges Act.

“I believe that it is an unnecessary conferment of protection on the National Assembly. Extending it to the CJN is an attempt to bribe the judiciary.

“A judicial officer is protected under the constitution so far as a judge can’t be sued by an act done by himself in his official capacity. The same thing goes for every member of the National Assembly. That has been an ancient privilege. They can’t be sued for comments made on the floor of the house. That’s enough.”

Another senior advocate, Afam Osigwe, said Nigerians should not allow the National Assembly to carry on with the amendment.

Osigwe said immunity would be abused if it is granted to more public officers.

He said, “In every part of the world, immunity is granted only to the President and even the ones granted to the executives is limited, if you commit an offence while in office it may be a ground to take away the immunity. I don’t see why we should grant immunity to the CJN. It is not done.

“We just want to abuse the immunity, is it even not bad enough that we don’t investigate or trial when they leave office and we now want to confer immunity on them while in office? That’s sad. They should not be allowed to get away with this.”

For Mr Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), the presiding officers of the National Assembly do not deserve immunity.

He queried the logic behind such a proposal, adding that those who had nothing to hide ought not to fear prosecution.

Adedipe added, “It is not right to extend immunity to this set of people. We should open the democratic space and access to the court. If you have a problem with the conducts of presiding officers in the National Assembly how are you going to bring them to justice if you confer immunity on them? I do not support it and I do not think it should be passed into law.

“Are you not aware that in some countries sitting prime ministers are being taken to court? It happened in Israel. Are they going to be committing legal infractions that would be taking them to court every now and then? They do not need immunity.”

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress has asked members of the National Assembly to massively support labour-related matters today (Tuesday) during voting on the amendment to the 1999 Constitution.

Speaking during a protest at the National Assembly on Monday, the President, NLC, Ayuba Wabba, said the lawmakers should also vote for the autonomy of local governments and the judiciary.

Wabba stated, “We want an overwhelming vote. We don’t even want 99 per cent when members of the National Assembly are voting tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wednesday. We want 100 per cent of their votes to guarantee the independence of the judiciary and to guarantee full autonomy for local governments.”

PoliticsRe: Medical Tourism Will Soon Be A Thing Of The Past, Says FG by treesun: 11:49am On Mar 01, 2022
Omooba77:
The Federal Government on Monday advised Nigerians to seek information on the treatment of some diseases locally before thinking of going abroad.

According to the government, the advice became necessary because many of its hospitals across the country were now treating some of the medical issues pushing some citizens outside the shores of the country.

Meanwhile, the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi in Abuja, has commenced open heart surgery with four patients already undergoing treatment in the facility.

The government insisted that lack of awareness had compelled some Nigerians to seek treatment on certain diseases abroad rather than locally.

The Minister of State for Health, Dr Olorunnimbe Mamora, gave the advice while inspecting some newly acquired facilities to improve the care of patients by the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi in Abuja.

He said government had put measures in place to address medical tourism.

Mamora said state-of-the-art equipment were being procured by the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to make treatment of surgeries less cumbersome.

The Minister stated that many public hospitals in the country were now treating some medical issues pushing Nigerians abroad.

He said, “There are other areas of medical tourism and we will be addressing them gradually. We are applying state-of-the-art equipment that would make the procedure less cumbersome.

“I can assure you that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is doing so much in terms of upgrading facilities to make them suitable for the exigencies of the moment.

“The affordability and sustainability are components of the Universal Health Coverage.

“All the medical team that carried out this surgery are Nigerians living in Nigeria. This goes to confirm the long-held view that with the conducive environment and availability of necessary equipment, we have competent Nigerians that can really carry out this procedure excellently well.”

Earlier, the Chief Medical Director of the FMC, Abuja, Prof. Saad Ahmed, explained that the open surgery was the “first of its kind in this facility.”

He said, “We were able to do it successfully and all the patients are doing quite well. The open heart surgery is quite delicate and requires a lot of skills and commitment.

“On this, the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Health was able to get some infrastructure and some equipment in this regard.

“We usually send some people for training in various accreditation because open heart surgery is teamwork.

“Many people at this moment are undergoing some forms of training. The essence for this is for us to domesticate this and make it a routine procedure in the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja.

“This is for the benefit of all Nigerians but we are looking at how this could benefit our neighbouring countries and some other parts of the world.

“We are starting something small but we are looking at how we can make it big in the nearest future.”

Ahmed explained that the surgeries carried out were possible through the support of Save A Heart Foundation UK, which, he said, provided “skills transfer and also donated some equipment.”

He said, “Because of that, we were able to subsidise the cost for the patients. But in the long run, we want to call on philanthropists, some corporate organisations and societies to actually come forward, to subsidise the cost of this surgery through donations to our Medical Indigent Fund.”

“The Board chairman has been making contacts here and there, to see how he can make these philanthropists come to the aid of some of these people.

“Meanwhile, locally, we have established the Medical Indigent Fund which is being managed by some members of this hospital’s community, all with the aim of generating some funds to assist the indigents.

“With the commencement of the open heart surgery here, it means that the managers of the Medical Indigent Fund need to be up and doing to reach people in far and near to see how they can come to the aid of those that are in need.”
