Hi Trippledots,

I doubt if you can just buy a soft starter and use it with any inductive load. I believe that load has to be designed for such. For example, you can't just buy a soft starter or a VFD for an electric motor simply because you want to "check" the surge pull of that motor; the motor must be designed for such method of starting, otherwise it would malfunction..

By the way, note that what Soft starter or VFD does is that it reduces the Voltage/frequency applied to the inductive device and gradually ramps it up. If you apply a reduced voltage/frequency to a device not designed for such, it would burn out.

An inverter fridge cruises from very low watt up to about its rated watt, with the rated voltage/frequency applied to it.

So, it's not that simple to just use a soft starter
Hi,
I think I get your point, but maybe the way i understand the soft starter is different from yours. There is this DIY video i watched of someone designing a soft starter for use with inverters. The main component was a thermistor,i think..... Its resistance increase as it heats up, so as the inductive load pulls current, the component heats up, resistance increases and hence current draw is pinched enough to avoid heavy power surges.

Most common inductive loads should be able to handle such scenario.

Where i may agree with you is that the soft starter needs to be sized appropriately for the load it is carrying, which can just mean sizing to meet the inverter's maximum power rating.

VFD is another kettle of fish tho.

You're right earthrealm... Same observation with mine. After recently upgrading my system, I left my inverter fridge (rated 55W) permanently ON, through a socket-plug energy meter...

Initially consumes around 78W.... After like 12hrs, it drops to 55W... After 14hrs,it drops to 32W.... And further drops to 30W after 15hrs.

Even when it knocks off, when it comes back On, it stays at 30W. And that's where it has been since.. Just hovering around 30W. Sometimes 28W.

There were very few times though, I've noticed the fridge would be On, due to the compressor sound, but the meter is reading less than 10W...

But before the upgrade, I run it from 8am to around 6pm.... Always runs around 78W-62W.

So,yeah... Inverter fridges are best left permanently ON
Strictly talking numbers tho, manually cycling it on and off vs leaving it on may both amount to same average consumption.

Hi Ojeysky,

To an extent, yes.... But there are wide differences.
I used to have a Table-Top (student) fridge rated 75W. Every single time the fridge is starting, it pulls around 800/900W...not kidding. Even my 1.5KVA/24V Mopower Inverter beeps. I've run it for over 10hrs,yet it kicks in at over 500W...

My present Inverter fridge cruises from around 20W and gradually reaches the 78W max. It starts coming down after like 5-12hrs. Stabilizes at around 30W after 14hrs.

For the bolded, that's the whole point. Why would it lose power, if you're looking at inverter fridge? With inverter fridge, it's best to run it 24/7. The only periods I cut off power is when there's rain and it comes with Lightning and thunder. I usually do a total isolation of my inverter system, since the house I'm staying doesn't have either a Lightning/thunder arrestor or even grounding for me to use a SPD.
Even if the power loss lasts for about 3hrs, after powering the fridge back, it doesn't go above 55W and within 1hr, it stabilizes back to around 30W...
Won't a soft start circuit solve this for conventional inductive loads with high inrush current at start up?...it may just be more economical to get a soft starter and use with conventional inductive loads.

Except of course to upgrade is higher in priority sha.

Penuelseun,
Two independent Relays switching power to a load is very dangerous!
The likelihood of both latching the same time is very high.
Relays fail all the time, i work where this happens regularly...

To mitigate, consider using mechanically interlocked contactors. It's physically impossible for both to energise at the same time.
A DPST should be easier and do the job...

He derives joy in doing it from scratch.

I would have expected him to buy coil and build a relay and then take it from there. Or better still produce coil then use it to produce a relay.
Lol... Bro easy on the guy. Don't dampen his passion.

I stumbled on this and traced the history backwards one level for some background but still struggled.

Why are you using two relays to switch power to one load please?

Without extra information this looks like a job a DPST relay or contactor would easily do.
I'm on the road hence I haven't really gone through his explanation, but just off the top of my head, a DPST as u said should do the job of transferring load and ensuring mutual exclusivity.... I go read the thing well later

Penuelseun:
Not so good with drawings, please make do with this, connect the live output from your public power supply to the NO wire of relay1 and connect the neutral to the NO of the relay2, connect the live output from your inverter to the NC of relay1 and connect the neutral to NC of relay2, you then connect common terminal of relay1 to the live output going to your load and connect the neutral to the common terminal of relay2. You can connect the wires for the coils for the two relays together so they are powered by a 12v adapter. Connect the adapter to your public power supply so when there is light from public utility, the relays switches to the NO position.
Thank you

There are many cheap circuits that can implement set voltage cutoff and reconnect. I even built one in my early days with solar as a charge controller. It simply connects or disconnects pv based on battery voltage....you can use it to switch relays for you battery if thats what you really want to do.

Check aliexpress for battery voltage monitor or something along that line.

Guys, the last set of these batteries just came in. I can now start building. Too bad I'm still stuck at work and would also have to do a basic build on the first run. No BMS, breakers or isolators. These will come in when Corona allow economy start to move freely again.

For now my people need an alternate source of power so my old remaining DC fuses would just have to do for the time being.
Are these cells new? Cos i saw them advertised as used cells for $9.99 per cell somewhere else, although stock was sold out.

One of the reasons I now go for external chargers. Over the years I have packed and condemned inverters with either bad chargers or bad inverters. Going together is NEVER a good combination.

Cheap Chinco "Reliable" I bought since 2016 is still doing the job, no chargers attached.

She mentioned 2 yellow bulbs and 2 coloured bulbs. I'll wager those are incandescent lights like 100 watts each or at best 50 watts each. That's not to mentioned the 5 white bulbs she wrote which are likely CFL each likely 25 watts each - that makes 125 watts and then with the 4 incandescent bulbs (400 watts). That totals 525 watts on illumination alone.

525 watts will power 5 small sized deep freezers.

Yeah, so can AGM.. I am still 4 years away from getting LFP. I am still not sold on it yet. The tech is still too bleeding edge and expensive for now.. a 140AH pylon setup would cost close to 1.4m (at N360/$) If I spend N500k on 4 Quanta batteries I would get 400A which would serve me for 4 years of diligent use.. I can then turn the 900k to dollars and put it in a eurobond account for the life time of the Quanta (4 years) by 2024.. my dollar investment would of grown.. Lithium batteries would have gotten better and cheaper and I might still be able to buy the cheaper more efficient and more capacity lithium from the eurobond investment. Economics of Lithium doesn't work for me .. yet.
I'm interested in this eurobond talk sir. Can you enlighten me more? Probably via whatsapp so we don't derail this thread.

There was even a breakdown of cost and some comparison with getting a conventional heating system here: https://www.nairaland.com/390522/solar-energy-complement-fta/185#51106187

But that was FOUR years ago, prices are bound to have changed, either it is now higher or lower. Good luck
