Genesis 1:2 talks about an empty and dark earth. Did God create an empty earth? Did he make it dark? The answer is definitely no. Then if he didn't, something must have happened to the original earth. This must be the occasion when Satan was thrown down to earth from heaven.

Verse 1 was the beginning of creation. Verse 2 says that the earth was without form and void and darkness was on the face of the deep.

God couldn't have created a voidless earth that was full of darkness. Something happened that made the earth empty and dark.

If the earth was already in existence in voidless form, then it means God was not the original creator. It means he made use of existing earth which contradicts the Scripture.

The Bible says that God created all things from things that were never in existence - Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. (Hebrews 11:3).

If the empty earth was already in existence before God started creating, Hebrews 11:3 will be meaningless.

So there was an original earth that became voidless through circumstances that are not made available to us. But we are the first man on earth created in the image of God. If there were men in the previous earth, they were certainly not created in the image of God.
