Tension is experience in the bottom of a slab while compression is exact on the top section of a slab. if the bottom section does not deform excessively, then the concrete at the bottom area of a slab do not serve much engineering purpose other then composition for the iron rod. I used to have that feeling too before now... but it doesn't really matter. Life is too short to be serious about these sort of things.

Most people want designs for free or next to nothing. They will prefer to give an inexperienced person or a student to do their building design. When they get to construction stage they will spend far much more than they would have due to rework. Then the 'Architect' is to blame. Which Architect if I may ask?

There is a process to everything, don't come crying when you ignore the process and the negative results start to show. Get a good and experienced architect,negotiate to get your design done and you will save yourself a lot of time,energy and money while on site.

I just bought a plot with a colleague and intend putting up a 4bedroom duplex

1 big ante room with visitors toilet
1 visitors room
1 big sitting room
Dinnig area
Big kitchen with store and laundry


Upstairs
2 big rooms ensuite
1 big masters room with veranda....big toilet and big walk in closet...and nice view
Small family living room

I intend taking the plot in front....will appreciate if you can give me what I asked for...complete with 3car parking space.

Peeps cry on Jury day as their work is being torn apart after many weeks of sleepless nights...especially ladies. 3 design projects per semester takes all your time and money and you still have to cope with other theory courses. Looking back i think its ignorance that makes courses seem difficult. Most of the things we stress on don't really matter few years down the line. We ignore the important things only to find out later that those things we ignored are actually more important.

Good job joywendy... how about recommended books for beginners. If I could recommend only one it will be 'Chess Fundamentals' by Capablanca.
