Ralphlauren: Council tax has nothing to do with immigration status. It doesn't influence your visa application.
Fail to pay your council tax and they will send the bailiffs after you. They are very quick and waste no time. https://moneyaware.co.uk/2018/10/what-happens-if-i-dont-pay-my-council-tax/
Infact, your council tax is more important than your gas and electricity bill. Council tax pays for waste collection, roads, schools, public amenities, etc.
You can decide to have either or both names or none at all on the council tax letter. Totally up to you.
What matters to the council is the money they get from EACH address. Which is why even empty properties are subject to council tax unless you apply for a waiver and the council decides to grant it.
Council tax is not paid per person that lives at a property. It is a tax on EACH address irrespective of the number of adults or children living at the address. Students and under 16 (I believe) are exempted from council tax and if you live alone, you are eligible for a 25% discount.
Paying council tax and being on the electoral roll are two different things. You can be named on the electoral roll and not on the council tax bill and vice versa. Adding your name to the council tax and adding a name to the electoral roll are two different applications. You can decide to do neither or either or both. What matters to the council is that they get their money (tax) from every address from the named person on the council tax account. Thanks for the comprehensive answer, God bless you |

Aphrodite007: Interesting.. I didn’t know council tax could do such magic haha
Council tax is just a payment you should make to your council for maintenance of that council. It helps to pay it if you’re on a spousal visa. I think people can get away with not paying it on other visas. But it helps with your credit file because some councils add you to the electoral roll if you’re paying.
Also you really should pay your council tax. Let me reframe my question thus; if the husband is working and the wife is working as well, each of them should pay council tax for the same house. |

cutieb: Thank you but I don't know anyone in Edinburgh, Scotland Another way to help yourself is to join the Facebook market page in the council a you are traveling to. E.g in your own case, any fb group in Edinburgh will be a good idea, type your request there, stating when you want to move in and size of accommodation you need. You may just be lucky to get help |

Captaincool1: This is what I was sent some weeks back.
You will be sponsored initially for a 4 years working visa in the position of Senior Support Worker, earning 28k pounds a year. The visa can be extended if need be.
These are the official financial outlays. Sponsorship licence for visa is 1655 pounds Visa Application fee is 610 pounds NHS Health surcharge 624 pounds each year 3yrs is 1872pounds Proof of 1270 pounds in hand to initially settle in UK. With tfare amounts to 6.5k pounds
You need to get an international driving lincence and should be able to drive from Nigeria.
Please what's your take. I got a similar offer last year may/June. In my case, I was asked to pay 2700 pounds to get a license and that guarantees a training which will enable me search for job in the UK. After series of interviews with them, I updated my colleagues in the UK who advised me to run. Pls be aware for everything you try to do regarding working in the UK, someone had done something similar most likely so ensure to do due diligence before committing yourself. |

Please I need some enlightenment regarding council tax.
I used to think it's paid as part of a household's utility bill. I'm being made to understand that its nice for each person to pay if husband n wife are both employed so that their immigration status can be interdependent on each other. Thus if one person gets frustrated with his job, their immigration status is retained/stable.
I don't seem to understand this |

Mamatukwas: Have you tried traditional means? Rightmove etc I realized getting an accommodation as a johnny just come in the UK is an arduous task, you apply as if applying for jobs then they will tell u they are running checks. I tell you for a fact, sometimes they don't. If you ask from your referee, you will realize that they were not contacted. I will advice OP to exert efforts, and a very sure link is getting linked up to a house owner if you are lucky to find one |

marylandcakes: This is true, from Monday 15th February all international flight passengers especially from the red zones will be taken straight from the airports to a hotel to isolate for 10 days at a cost of £1, 750. If you are visiting that’s most of your shopping money gone. Is this only for ppl on visiting visa? But I don't understand all these rationale yet. Travelers must test negative before they travel then on getting here isolate for 10days. I know someone who has only stayed for about 2 weeks he had to leave for naija before his return date because he has an important exam to write. He still had too do covid test again |

Abini2012: Lol.. Depending on your taste and how long you'll be in the country, you can rent an unfurnished house.
It won't cost an arm and a leg. There are plenty charity furniture shops, eg British Heart Foundation where you can get furniture for cheap prices. Earlier in the thread in Coventry I posted one called Love Coventry, you can get a reasonable sized fridge/freezer for £50. Tables, chairs, chest of drawers for less than £30 etc.
Also there is gumtree and even Facebook market place where people sell unwanted stuff for giveaway price and some even give out free provided you can go and pick it up.
Lastly, if you are working and you want tear rubber stuff, you have the option of getting the shop's 'pay small small' scheme ( I am considering this for the new Samsung S21 5G, I cannot come and kill myself jor)
Decent living It isn't just dependent on how long, if you will be working and you have kids, unfurnished appears to be a better option because you can't leave the house as good as you met it with active kids around |

Abini2012: We complain to our landlord about our fridge. We couldn't open the freezer compartment so it affected how we preserve food and the quantity we can buy. Also, if we are to have other occupants in the house, the fridge/freezer will be too small for us.
Yesterday, our new fridge/freezer (that's how it's call here) was delivered by 2 men. The men just dropped it and told us to connect after about 3 hrs...
First pic, old fridge
Now I can shop with easeeeee Enjoyment for those who live in furnished apartments ooo. |

Abini2012: I saw this plaque on a building which houses M&S store and I was intrigue to know more about that person.
So Google search reveal that he was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. Countries have statutes erected in his honour.
His poem (and song) "Auld Lang Syne" tells a story about old friends reminiscing their great adventures but now sung at Hogmanay (the last day of the year), as a farewell to the old year by the time the clock strikes at midnight.
Scotland celebrates him with Burns Night on the 25th of January(tomorrow) which happens to be his birthday.
Even a crater on Mercury is named after Burns Ohh really, used to play the poem for my niece over 20yrs ago then. Should all acquaintance be forgot And never brought to miiinnnd. For days of Auld lang syne my friend..... |

Just to confirm what my last post, see that Rich Tea biscuits, it's 79p in this shop. I got it for 29p at Lidl. Same biscuit, same taste. I think it's about a Pound in One Pound shop.

I'm so fed up with this visa guys at Ikeja. I made an application for my spouse and kids, biometrics was on 2nd Dec, we went for collection on Dec 17th. One of the Kid's passport read Dependant of Name instead of Compound-Name (e.g John instead of Jones-John) so we raised it at the point of collection because we feared delay at the POE. Till today we haven't been able to get the passport back, when tracked it says collected but we have been there 2ce and they keep telling us we will receive a mail when it's ready.
Please advice me what can we do, we sent a mail to escalate it and we paid 3£ as requested but they only said to wait till 15 working days after complain was made (that is, Dec 17). It's over 15 days now and no word from them.
It's getting so annoying because, this is delaying flight bookings. Please what can we do? |

I need an advice please, where can I get educational tablets for kids 3/5 years old, I bought one from China the last time my friend traveled but it did not last long before it got spoilt. Now I need 2 quality ones, is it advisable to buy from Nigeria or here. If it's better to buy here, what's the quality and the price range like.
Thanks in advance for your constant guidance |
