FYI to folks who will want to ask personal questions:

1. Note - do NOT simply copy interview Q&As that others post here. Make it your own, don't be lazy. All of you did not find alumni who recommended obscure colleges to you.

2. Do NOT send me emails for general questions that can easily be answered here or might help others. You defeat the purpose of this thread. Only send me emails on questions that you wish to keep private. You can trust that all that you say to me in private will stay there.

For those of you going for interviews soon, i wish you all the best! Be confident, spend less time rehearsing and cramming. You do not need to rehearse your reasons for selecting a school or major... this is your life, you should know it even if i woke you up from sleep to ask you.

Using a birthing center is likely a red flag because it suggests you really don't have the funds to have a baby in the US. But since you're not seeking a visa, you should be ok. IMO, the important thing is that you paid all your bills and have evidence to prove. But again, no one here is a VO so take any advice you get here with a pinch of salt.

As an aside, i found this part of your post interesting... "hubby already gave me $9,000 for the trip". Sounds like you're asking your father for money. As a couple, i thought all monies in the marriage belonged to both. But that's just me thinking out loud.

You're not asking for help, you're simply a confused noise maker. Searching for a university is only possible if you have a clue what you want to do. Your search is also guided by which admission requirements you think you are able to meet. That is all your responsibility.

Also you have a microbiology degree, 5 years IT work experience... and so? What should we do with this information? What exactly do you want to do? Another Bsc? A masters degree? In what? Microbiology or IT? How do you convince the VO that you are genuinely advancing your career when your school and work experience are so widely divergent?

These are things you need to think about. You rather prefer to traffic in laughable noisemaking...

Emergency medical treatment...i agree maybe treat before you ask...but routine medicals.....iro o (meaning not true o)!!!! All the forms I've filled in looking for hospitals in the last 3 weeks have asked for my address, race and nationality...so it is abundantly clear that I'm out of country...not only out of state...govt isn't in a huge deficit because of medical yet...when they get there they will address it.

Oga I do that already. I pay for my own water here in Nigeria. I get my own 24 hour electricity because I pay a fortune in diesel, generators and solar systems and inverters and what not. I pay a fortune for private health care, private school, and private security.

I pay twice or thrice what you would pay in utilities. And you be shocked how much some of us in the high income bracket pay in taxes. So, yes you live in a system that works. You have managed to escape the problems the rest of us have to live with daily. Congratulations.

Now please let us hear word and continue to strategize how we can legally help our own children do the same.

Thank you.
You have also told us that you are very rich in all possible ways, we've all heard. Perhaps you can use that wealth and influence to improve your country rather than coming here to request discounts. Now i would request that you also kindly resist the temptation to quote me, while expecting me, quite absurdly, not to quote you. I'm sure your children will be just fine in the life you have created for them with your enormous wealth.

I'm not sure of what relevance you telling me what you pay for electricity, water and utilities in Nigeria is. Americans do not come to Nigeria to take advantage of your taxes. That you pay that much, while getting absolutely nothing in return, is testament that your country is a failed state.

grin cheesy grin TWoods.......

Point 1. If you feel you left Nigeria because you're intrinsically law abiding and honest....fair enough...I'll take your word for it....and i choose to believe the best about you.. ...would say you should give people here on this thread the benefit of the doubt as well. grin grin grin many people aren't doing things the right way....BUT....the law abiding ones take exception to being tarred with the dirty tar coated brush of "dishonest Nigerian". Just as you take exception to being called honest just because you live in the US tongue

Point 2. History will tell...we've only been at it for 57 years.....since 1960..

Point 3. I disagree my dear brother...UK used to suffer the same fate with medical tourism (even without jus soli)... but now they make visitors and students pay an NHS surcharge...you are right people should do the right thing without being policed..... but governments who are EFFICIENT will find a way to plug these loopholes...events orchestrate new laws....underwear and shoe bombers make it impossible for us to take more than 100ml in liquids through immigration...so.....

Point 4. If this is true...then my conclusion is that the US hospitals doing this are fraudulent!!! Passing off costs to the government because it makes them moneyhuh? Doesn't sound right to me.
Point 1 - i agree. There are very good Nigerians back home too. Apologies to the good ones. grin

Point 2 - I painfully beg to disagree. The other countries i mentioned were nowhere in 1960. Japan rose from the ashes of two atomic bombs to become the number three economy in the world. Ghana is only 3 years older than we are. South Africa emerged from apartheid only 23 years ago. I was looking at a thread on South Africa yesterday, i felt quite ashamed to be honest.

Point 3 - The government tries the best that it can. But it cannot plug every hole, even if it tried. There is not a lot you can do if someone claims to be a resident of a state when they are in fact not eligible for state benefits. Medicaid is administered by states.

Point 4 - Absolutely. Some of them do get caught though. When next you see a US advert targeting medical equipment for those >65 years and above... they are just perpetrating the same scam.

Oga, I have the funds. I can afford to get the cash discounts because I PAY CASH. If it hurts you so bad, stop paying insurance premiums and pay CASH for everything like I do.

Oh I guess you won't do that because the insurance premiums you are whining about are not up to a fraction of the cash I have to pay.
That would make absolutely zero sense. It's easy to pop in here once every 2 years, pay $5000 for childbirth and then crow about how you "have the funds". Of course, you are not obligated to pay fed and state taxes, property taxes (which are outrageously high in places like Texas) and other fees that pay for the hospitals, airports, 911 system, roads, water, electricity and all the perks you take advantage of, for free. If you could pay cash for all those too, that would be great!

Perhaps you should look up how much insurance premiums cost... the average premium costs for a family is N4.4 million/year.

Gbam. Leave all these Americans with their credit card funded, debt ridden lifestyles who dont know how much value cash in hand is to any business.
Which is probably why you would give an arm and a leg to give your child a passport to their lifestyles right? the truth is for all it's worth, this thread represents less than 0.1% of Nigerians. 99% cannot afford $5000 and live far worse than the average poor American. I would not be far off in saying that the vast majority of Nigerians who can comfortably afford $5000 cannot boast of earning that money legitimately. I think the Americans are just fine with their "credit card funded, debt ridden lifestyles". As the VOs have said here time without number, you are free to exclude you and yours from their lifestyles. Last i checked, they are not looking to trade it in for Nigeria.

@TWoods...may i make 2 points real quick....I've been giving it alot of thought and I think:

1) humans as a specie are intrinsically "not good" except when we have been saved from our "evil" ways...so regarding your characterisation of Nigerians as liars and cheats....we are...no doubt about it....my argument would be that we are not alone...the only reason other nationals seem to "behave" is because their countries have consequences for bad behaviour. That's why a British man who lives in Nigeria will likely go on a one way road, though he would never dare to do it in Knightsbridge!!! We are not the worst of the human race...our laws are just not being enforced...this would also explain why emigrants like you would appear to be good....you're just in a climate where not wearing your seatbelt atttacts a $100 fine!!! You may argue that the lack of law enforcement is itself an indication of our "badness"...i leave that argument about institutions for another day....i would say though that institutions are not built in a day....the great USA of today had a wild wild west history

2) also if Nigerians are so terrible and Americans are so great then why are the hospitals you imply are passing off discounts as Medicaid not being checked out......are they not breaking the rules by so doing.
..ignorance is not an excuse.... they cannot claim to not know who's are resident and who isn't. Surely they are ways to check!

And one last point...sorry..i know I said 2. I don't know how much of a discount constitutes Medicaid fraud but I live in Lagos and use medical insurance from a reputable company at a reputable hospital and my bills if I pay cash are almost 50% of what it is when I just sign off for insurance to pick up..explanation i was given
..... because of the delay in receiving funds from the insurance company and the likelihood of insurance to decline some payments...arguments about pre-existing conditions etc....i would imagine the process in the U.S. would even be more challenging as they have so many no insurance companies......
Interestingly, i did agree with many of the things you have said, but there are some i would push back on a bit.

1. I left Nigeria precisely because i felt it no longer represented who i was. I am a stickler for law and order, i do not ever give bribes as i thought it made no sense since i should not be giving you a monetary incentive to do a job you're being paid for. No, i don't appear good because i live in a country of laws. I made the choice to move here because i prefered to live among people who stick to the rules. If Nigeria ever got to that point, i'll be first on a flight back.

2. Institutions are not built in a day, but the experience of China, South Korea, Japan, Ghana and South Africa, tells me that time isn't our problem. We just do not want to change.

3. "Surely there are ways to check" is a terrible excuse. America is a huge country, not every detail is checked... least because you are expected to do the right thing at all times, without having to be policed. No one checks if i put my thrash in the bush outside my house, but i don't do that, simply because it is wrong. I wear seatbelts, not because i am afraid of a fine (who is checking anyway?) but because i value my life and the added safety using a seatbelt offers. Hospitals are not immigration offices, it is not their duty to check your immigration status before treating you. In some states i think there is actually a law against them doing this. It is your duty to clearly specify that you are not entitled to government funds for your medical care. That they don't check should not be an excuse.

4. Medicare and medicaid fraud is a huge problem here. As i mentioned before, it is true that you will get a discount for paying in cash over using medical insurance... but a lot of the time, the discount isn't because you paid cash. It's because the hospital you use can simply bill the feds for healthcare provided to you. It's big business and makes them a ton of money. Why do you think they come here looking for patients? Do you think it's because they've run out of pregnant Americans here?

If you're an undergrad, i hope you read this on your school's website - *All First-Year undergraduate students are required to live in the residence halls. You may want to read further here - http://www.eiu.edu/housing/international.php. Also take time to read your own schools freshman housing policy, it is quite detailed and you will need to fill a waiver form to live off campus.

Lol. I have a huge network of extended family in the US - siblings, in-laws, cousins in every part of the country. Most citizens. All hustling their butts off and living from pay check to pay check. Some college educated some not.

Not one of them can or will even dream of paying the cash sums Nigerians pay. Abeg leave story.

And if it's true that the hospitals actually pass the bills on to the govt, I still don't think the people on this thread are the right target for your venom.

You have been here long enough to know that most people on this thread are not your average Nigerian and actually want to do what's right.
That is far from the truth. The only reason is because they now know that not doing what is right has a severe impact on their continued ability to renew their visas. Remove that incentive and most Nigerians will try to find ways to lie and cheat.

Secondly, your "network of extended family" is not representative of the average American experience. I have no idea what they do but i would comfortably pay $5000 cash for a medical procedure if that was an option. Not all of us live paycheck to paycheck. I daresay the case is the same for a lot of middle class to upper middle class Americans.

Does the average American have the 5000 - 8000 USD to pay in advance and cash that most of the people on this thread pay?

If I am giving you my money at once and in advance, there's a price for that. I think that's the justification for the discount.

If you notice, most of the discount packages have a time frame attached to it. Sometimes you have to pay up to a month in advance, or at least before discharge. And when you don't, the offer lapses and you have to pay the full price.
That is not really true. Many Americans would more than happily pay cash if this was a option, with huge discounts. It is true that some discounts are due to the fact that you're paying in cash, however these are most likely not the norm. It is more likely that you get discounts because these hospitals are in low income areas that are already paid by the Feds to subsidize care for the poor. It is a lot easier to give you a discount and then bill Medicaid at the end of the year than have hundreds on payment plans that most are not expected to honor.

It is not a discount if you're paying $5000 for a procedure that costs the average American over $20,000.

As the VOs have told us here time and time again, the change of intent letter is not read and not associated with your application, so CBP never got it and never read it. Your concern should be on renewing your current visa when it expires. I would wager you will not be able to simply renew by dropbox.

Nigeria is a great place, there are several other places besides Abuja and Lagos which are never mentioned. There's Jos, Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Taraba etc all these places are cool. Let's not forget Delta and co.

The fact that many Nigerians seem ignorant doesn't mean the country isn't good. You will see a typical Nigerian telling you that eating goat meat pepper soup of 10cedis in Ghana is cheap meanwhile he will get that for half the price in Nigeria and same quality but because it's 10cedis in Ghana and N500 in Nigeria he will foolishly tell you Ghana's is cheaper meanwhile if you convert the currency N500 is about 5 CEDIs

The average Nigerian is ignorant but if you visit the country you will understand this. That's why the internet doesn't do Nigeria justice.

Forget about male chauvinism, can't you see it's more or less stupidity? Females who know this live above it. Behind the self entitlement is a very weak self esteem

That said, the land called Nigeria is "Green" meaning there's so much to do here and it's unfortunate that many Nigerians expect to be spoon fed to harness the good of the land. Why else will we have foreigners living and making it big here? Many have even naturalized

As incredible as it may seem to some myopic folks there are many US, UK, Canadian citizens living, working and settled here.

You should pay us a visit
How? Just what the heck are you talking about? Is there a Nigeria only you have been to? I mean dear God... we can't even run a half decent airline and yet Ethiopia and Kenya have one! What are you smoking?

A big shout out to all those who have contributed greatly to the forum. Been a silent reader of this forum since 2weeks now. I have read and gained so much as I got to know of letter of intent etc which I had no idea of in the past. I will like to find out is it possible for one to be pregnant and get to find out close to 4th month. No pregnancy signs, not even in any way looking pregnant as stomach is as flat as a piece of slice bread. I have Google's search and I saw so many replies stating the possibilities. I even read a. Particular which states 1 in 450women don't know they are pregnant till 5month while 1 in about 1,000 don't know why they are pregnant till they are due for labor. Am a bit confused though doctor says all is fine, scan results reveal baby is doing well . Now I want to apply strictly for B2 (childbirth) next year as EDD is May. Informed my sis last week and she's already helping me with getting a correspondence and cost of child birth in Indiana as that's her base.
Now the issue is?

How do I present my case to the VO as I didn't know I was pregnant initially? (Or say it's to my advantage the visa wasn't granted as am not even ready to go tru the change of intent, poe and renewal denials palava)......

When do you advise I schedule a visa interview appointment?( though am thinking of picking a date late Jan or early Feb) more so I need your contributions what went wrong when I went for my b1b2 visa interview on 9th Nov, location was Abuja but was declined, Here goes my transcript:

VO: Good morning. passports pls ( me hands it over to him.) your occupation?

Me: Am a French language instructor at xxxxxy, Im also a co-presenter a French program on radio Unilag 103.1fm, holds on Saturday's 12noon-12:30pm and I also own a business where I supply stationeries in wholesales and retails (sponsor on my DS160form is hubby)
VO: have you travelled out of the country before?

Me: yes . Travelled to Benin republic almost on a yearly basis on excursion almost on a yearly basis with KY students.

VO: OK. why are you going to the US?
Me: to attend my elder sister's graduation ceremony at xxxxxxxxx

VO: how long to you intend to stay in US?

Me : one week so I can quickly return to prepare my students for this year's first trimester examination.

VO: Your sisters status in the USA?

Me: LPR. She met her blhubby while schooling and they got married.

VO: so how long has she been in the USA?

Me: 5 yrs

VO: Does that mean she's been studying nursing for 5years?

Me: I said no, that she studied another course before moving to nursing

VO: which course?

Me: Mathematics

VO: any correlation between nursing and mathshuh... ( him thinking and trying to figure out) ....hmmmmm OK. Do you have any child/ children?

Me : No I don't

VO: Are you expecting any?

Me : Non for now but hubby and I are hoping to have one soon.

VO: Am sorry your visa can't be approved at this time. (then he hands me a pink copy section 214b stating reason for the rejection )
Na so I carry my file waka was so sad....

Biko make una forgive my long post but I just have to explain my situation clearly. Im earnestly looking forward to your replies to my case oo.......
You're young, no kids. Your sister went to the US and got married there... what's to suggest to the VO that you are not planning to do the same? Now that you're pregnant i think you should have a better shot - just my opinion, which may be wrong. But there's no harm in trying again.
