Good afternoon,

I am a silent follower on this thread and I have learnt so much here, my visa interview is next week, and here is my proposed transcript.
I will really appreciate corrections and tips to make it better.

I trust God to help me on the interview date.

Visa Approved!!

Transcript

VO: Good morning, pass your documents please,

Me: Good morning, (I pass my Passport and I-20 form)

VO: Why are you going to the US?

Me: I am going to the US to study for my Masters of Science in Information Technology Degree at The University of Texas at El Paso.

VO: (Nods), Why UTEP?

Me: I chose UTEP mainly because the school offers MSIT that is a Blend of Technolgy and Business, focusing on Web Technologies and Management, making the course a perfect fit for my career plans as a Senior Web Developer and Tech Startup Founder. Also, the School is one of the most affordable schools with it's kind of high educational standard, shown by its steady growth since it was founded in 1914 as a mining School to being a major public research institution in the region. Recently did the College of Engineering partner with a world emerging 3D printing company, Aconity 3D making UTEP it's North American base. Finally, half of the school's population is Hispanic, further highlighting the school's openness to cultural diversity.

VO: Good Good, Why MSIT?

Me: As I said earlier, I have been a Web Developer since 2014, and registered my Tech Startup officially last year as a Limited Liability Company in Nigeria, so I searched specifically for courses that could afford me the knowledge and experience I need to improve in my field and chosen path in order to achieve my goal of improving Nigeria's economy through Technology. UTEP offered exactly that through the MSIT program, with courses such as Human-Computer Interaction, Secure Web System, Advance topics in Database, Computer Security, Financial Accounting, Effective Human Resource Management, Global Policy Management, and three other elective courses that I will finalize on before my second study year.

VO: When did you graduate, and what have you been doing since then?

Me: I graduated in 2015, went for NYSC and finished in 2016 where I served as a Basic Technology and Mathematics teacher in a Secondary school, started work at an office space for my co-founded startup with business name registration as at the time, till September 2017 when I enrolled for an advance Web Development course at Bleep (One of the Best Software development training institutions in Nigeria) till December, after which I was selected as one of the best for a 6 months internship at the same place to work with a team of Developers in building Software solutions, so as to further stretch our field experience of all we learnt during the training and for further exposure. I completed the internship program in June, and have been working at my startup since while preparing for my travel abroad.

VO: That's impressive, so what do you plan to do after your study?

Me: Pretty simple, I plan to come back to Nigeria my lovely home, and use the knowledge and experience I must have gained at UTEP and in the United States in contributing my quota to building the "Tech Echo System" in Nigeria, starting first from my Co-founded Company, by using these knowledge to run operations and manage resources better, most especially human resources, as it is evident that Nigeria has a lot of talents trooping into the field of technology and other fields, but the results we get are not up to our level of potentials mainly because of lack of experience and know-how when it comes to talent and resource management, so I intend to come be a specialist in building and managing talents in the Technology Niche of Nigeria to create solutions that will help us live better and improve the Economy of Nigeria and other African Countries. I have started this already, I will only be continuing when I come back better equipped.

VO: Nice, So Who is sponsoring you?

Me: I got a Teaching Assistantship position that covers most of my tuition and other expenses, and my Uncle is covering the remaining cost of my study.

VO: What does your Uncle do?

Me: He is a current member of the Bleep of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and is the founding Chairman of Bleep Energy that deals in construction of oil and petroleum processing facilities, massive infrastructures, as well as importation of construction materials.

VO: Nice, do you have any documents to prove this?

Me: Yes, a letter of sponsorship from Uncle(with official letterhead), His Bank statements(salary account and a personal account), Teaching Assistantship enrolment letter.

VO: Why is your Uncle sponsoring you?

Me: Smiles, First of all because he is willing and capable too, and majorly because he has been a major driving force for me to always adance in life and career, and has always supported my every move to reach for the best, my uncle was responsible for over 80% of my undergraduate expenses.

VO: That is nice, are you married, any kids?

Me: No, none.

VO: I have Approved your visa, pick up your passport with visa at the circled location in 2 days, and ensure you are with your i-20 at the POE.

Me: Smiles, Thank you, God bless you.

Amen.

Your answers are good. Delivery is key. Prepare well and may God favour you on your interview day

It has always been like this. Don't use that as a excuse not to pursue your dream. Ofcourse they are making money with the refusal. If You are prepared enough and hopefully favoured to meet a V.O that's not too strict, You will scale through. So prepare well and leave the rest for God if you are not an atheist cheesy

Lol, don't mind them. Naija people have used the "Na student package sure pass" to spoil everything. You'll see unqualified, undercooked, people posing as students trying to outsmart VOs, that's making them scrutinize students like kilode. Smh. Everybody always shouting "them no dey check account jare" and doing stupid things to abuse the system. Now see the result.

Back in the day, you'd hardly hear of Administrative processing in transcripts. Some Naija people can abuse everything.

Lool grin. That's just it

Haba! Fear God. Which kind logic is this na? How can you know for certain what someone's intent is? It's not as clear cut as it looks Sir. For what it's worth, he could get admitted into CA and still find his way to TN or wherever else if intent is to immigrate. All the VO had was a suspicion, it was the applicant's job to clear that suspicion and he probably did a bad job at it.

I read the transcript, he needs to do a better job. His brother's life decisions doesn't ban him from ever staying in TN. It'd raise red flags, that's all. It's his duty to explain those red flags. Saying it's a coincidence though is a weak defense.

Oga read my comments well before replying. I told him what to do. He lied that it was a coincidence and his intention was to immigrate. So best to him to address it before reapplying

Thank you, I'll start looking for other schools.

Am i to pay another sevis fee when another school gives me admission?

You don't need to pay another sevis fee if the one you paid is not up to 365 days. You can simply transfer the sevis payment for another school.

Thank you for your reply. I've told my brother severally to allow me choose a school in other states but he refused.
he is still insisting that i choose a school in Tennessee. he said i should defer the admission to spring semester and apply for the visa again
APSU actually didn't give me GA.
Please what can i include in my transcript when i'm reapplying?

Your brother is not the person that will approve your visa. You can get visa with other schools and transfer to schools in Tennessee when you get to USA. Better you play safe than allowing your brother dictate for you. I won't advise reapplying without any tangible change as your case is obvious you are immigrating using student visa

Interview on AUG 8, Visa Delayed

Vo: Good Morning
Me: Good morning

Vo: Tell me about your program and why you choose to study it
Me: (NB: my I-20 isn’t stating my exact course of study so I explain to her)

Vo: okay, tell me about your preferred course of study
Me: Information Assurance & Security involves protecting information and information systems from unauthorized use, access, disruption, destruction and modification in order to provide integrity, availability….she cuts in

Vo: Why did you choose to study it?
Me: I have an undergraduate degree in computer science and during my finals, I worked on a project on credit card fraud detection using hidden markov model. Ever since, I’ve been interested in tackling online fraud activities and however, my late dad and uncle who is my sponsor both had a fintech company, the fintech company is an online payment gateway company which is in line in operation with my current place of work, the company has been down for a while. So getting this degree would let me gain more technical knowledge and improve my practical skills needed in relaunching this start up alongside my uncle when I get back to Nigeria which is the primary reason why my uncle is sponsoring me. And however, the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics report shows that over $54bn worth of electronic payments were made in the second quarter of 2017 of which a large percentage were reported to be fraudulent. With the growth of SMEs in Nigeria and Africa at large, there is need for Information Assurance Specialist in tackling this setback.

Vo: How did you hear about the school?
Me: When I was doing my final year project on CREDIT CARD FRAUD DETECTION USING HIDDEN MARKOV MODEL, I sourced journals and publications written by Dr Joseph Elarde who later introduced me to Dr Jiang Li, both being associate professors at the department of computer science at APSU. Their contributions were so immense that ever since I had always wanted to be under their tutelage.

Vo: how many schools did you apply to?
Me: 2, AUSTIN PEAY STATE UNIVERSITY & MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY. (both schools are in the same state, TENNESSEE)

Vo: What are the similarities between the two school?
Me: (I wasn’t expecting this question…….i think she asked this because I chose the same course for both schools) I can’t really remember what I said but I know I said something about both their curriculum fitting my career goals.

Vo: Why did you choose APSU over MTSU?
Me: When I was doing my final year project on CREDIT CARD FRAUD DETECTION USING HIDDEN MARKOV MODEL, I sourced journals and publication written by Dr Joseph Elarde who later introduced me to Dr Jiang Li, both being professors at the department of computer science at APSU. Their contributions were so immense that ever since I had always wanted to be under their tutelage. More so, my application at MTSU was still being processed at the time APSU gave me admission.

Vo: Why didn’t you wait for the admission at MTSU?
Me: The resumption date for APSU was getting close and I didn’t want to miss out on it.

Vo: Do you have a relative in Tennessee?
Me: Yes, my brother (and my mum, I didn’t mention this but I filled it in my DS-160 form, my brother is a US CITIZEN while my mum is a LEGAL PERMANENT RESIDENT)

Vo: Why did you choose two schools in the same state?
Me: (I think this was where the problem started, I wasn’t expecting this question) i said jargons but I know I said or mentioned it was a coincidence. (she tilted her ear like she didn’t hear what I said)

Vo: Are you married
Me: NO

Vo: Do you have kids?
Me: NO

Vo: Sorry you do not qualify for………………………….you know the rest
Me: I just waked away

I want to defer my admission at APSU to spring semester and start applying for the visa again. Am I to pay another SEVIS fee? Or do I just request for another i-20 and pay for the visa fee?
My brother said he wants me over there this year.
My brother has been in the US since 2008, he entered through the visa lottery scheme.
He graduated from MTSU in 2014, I think this was the point I missed out in the interview.

As I’m preparing for the next interview what are the points I need to pitch, indeed your candid advice. Thanks.

From your transcript, the v.o helped you to know the reason you were refused. You chose schools in the same state your brother is staying who is also a US citizen, it means all your intent is to immigrate to USA using student visa. Also saying it was a coincidence is a lie because you were aware that your family members are in the state and applied only to schools in the same state. I don't think reapplying with same school will help, look for schools in other states and apply. I guess Austin peay state university gave you graduate assistantship, didn't see any mention of that on your transcript

I will have to defer till spring cos as it's stands now I can't even get another date cos I had to use emergency appointment the last time I applied

@ lagosismyhome said it all. Sell yourself, it's an interview. Saying you are unemployed doesn't help. There are better ways to put it like assisting your dad after your nysc, doing some online certification to help your career and all that. Take it as a job to sell yourself to them. Also try to create home ties in your responses.

Thanks for the swift response, pls can I get a full tuition waiver with a good TOEFL with a CGPA of 3.72/5? Studied Electrical Engineering

Yes you can. Ace your GRE, if you can score atleast 315 or more, you will stand better chance of getting full funding. You can also apply for direct PhD, most if not all PhD are fully funded in USA. Focus on getting good score for your GRE, quantitative especially. You will definitely get funding from schools
