I have seen this type before. I'm sure she wasn't like this when you first married her. Women, especially, the educated ones also have dreams and aspirations. While it may be the job of a school to train a child in both knowledge and character, it is not their responsibility to completely take over this role from the parents. In my case, the screen does not go blank initially. Then goes blank before it gets to "windows", after that it is only keyboard that would be on. I haven't been able to take it to a technician, because the last one just looked at the system and claimed it was screen. I feel it has to do with software updates, because it always shows without any glitch then goes blank after loading for a while.

He is right,it might be the screen or from the motherboard, software update can't be the issue.

I have one experience like that,it will work fine immediately you power it on but once it get to desktop the back light will off.

I replaced the screen and it works fine.

This laptop was brought in for repair,it was not powering on, the person said it the BIOS is bad and need a fix.

I connected the charger to see what's wrong,and noticed that the charger light was blinking,this is a typical fault on this models like 8460p, 8570p etc the charger light will keep blinking when there is a short.

So this is a not a bios issue,I take out the mobo, noticed the bad caps,I removed and mobo works fine.

Drive the display adapter, go to device manager, click on it , right click on the Microsoft adapter and click on update.

First,don't plug in the charger and if it is possible remove the back cover and detach the battery.
