Marriot enters african hotel industry through the backdoor (acquisation) ! this might be good for africa and nigeria in particular. but i would have prefered to keep protea an african brand.

Marriott International, a hospitality company with more than 3,800 properties and 19 hotel brands, has signed a letter of intent with Protea Hospitality Holdings of Cape Town, South Africa, to acquire Protea Hotels’ brands and its management business that operates or franchises 116 hotels across three brands with 10,184 rooms in South Africa and six other Sub-Saharan African countries.

The transaction will nearly double Marriott’s distribution in Africa to more than 23,000 rooms, and provide Marriott with a proven operational platform and leadership team to accelerate its expansion plans and solidify its leadership position in the African hotel market.

Protea, founded in 1984, manages, franchises and leases 104 hotels across the Protea Hotels brand, including two Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! hotels and the African Pride Hotels collection. Protea also has a significant presence in Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

As part of the transaction, Protea Hospitality Holdings will create a property ownership company to retain ownership of the hotels it currently owns, and enter into long-term management and lease agreements with Marriott for these hotels. It will also retain a number of minority interests in other Protea-managed hotels. Marriott will manage approximately 46% of the rooms, franchise approximately 40%, and lease approximately 14%.

Airport are not luxury but neccessary infrastructure for every state in Nigeria. I support any state in the federation who can afford to run the airport to establish one! Orji can start the project another governor can complete it as airport are capital intensive and require a time frame which orji might not have in office at the moment.

Some Nairalanders just run to comment without adequate knowledge of the facts on grounds, Anyone who knows Aba well knows that it is one of the most commercially and industrial viable cities in Nigeria baring bad roads Aba/ Abia deserves an airport as most of the passengers using Enugu,Owerri,Port harcourt and Uyo Airports originate from Abia. An airport in Aba will never i repeat never be unviable.

At this point in nigeria we should not be looking for individuals for change, we should be building institutions that can stand the test of time. we should build our justice system so it can tackle corruption and not individuals that are themselves susceptible to corruption. Its a system that regulates and check imbalances not individuals.

i still think that the justice system in nigeria is the key to solving the corruption problem in the nation. the should come up with the will to enforce the law or should i say grow the spine to see that the laws are enforced.

Stanbic IBTC Bank has been appointed sole financial adviser to the Lagos State government on the proposed Lekki-Epe International Airport project to be



developed on a modular basis at an estimated project cost of N71.64bn ($450 million) in its first phase.

Situated about 10km from Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ), the proposed airport will boost economic activities at the LFTZ scheduled to begin full operations in 2012. It will also drive urban development and tourism in the Lekki-Epe axis of Lagos State.

A scalable airport that will be designed to cater for the Airbus A380, making it a Code F compliant airport, the Lekki-Epe International Airport is expected to commence operations with a conservative capacity of two million passengers per annum, reaching five million passengers by 2015.

Commenting on the airport project, Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic IBTC Bank, Sola David-Borha, said the project reinforces the bank’s long standing partnership with the Lagos State Government in the area of infrastructure development, which is informed by the knowledge that infrastructure is the foundation on which socio-economic development is built.

As part of the competitive tender process for the construction of the Lekki-Epe International Airport, Stanbic IBTC Bank has made available Request for Pre-Qualification (RFPQ) to 33 Nigerian and international firms who have indicated interest to participate in the ambitious project.

The companies had earlier submitted Expression of Interest (EOI) in August 2011, bidding for the project under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.

The RFPQ provides the bidding companies with guidelines for the submission of a Statement of Qualification (SOQ) which highlights their technical, operational and financial capability to design, finance, build and operate the Lekki-Epe International Airport, before its transfer to Lagos State Government at the expiration of the concession period.

NAHCO Aviance, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Arab Contractors Nigeria Limited and Cappa D’Alberto Plc, are among the 20 Nigerian companies that have been provided with the Request for Pre-Qualification.

They will compete against 13 international firms that includes Munich Airport Germany, Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co Limited and Canadian Commercial Corporation, among others, for the development of the first phase of airport project.

How does a country like Kenya survive? Every thing is not down to oil, also most government ministries, department and parastatals at local, state or federal level do not need the level of staffs they currently employ, many will function very well with just 30% of their current staff level.

true bauchi has tourism potential vis a vis Yankari games reserve and the wikki warm springs was there twice in 04 and 05 andd must say the place is simply great. but i wonder who will go there now with the violence going on there. ^^^^Sorry i forgot the educational piece that you also mentioned, the state is doing well interms of educational reforms as they have exponentially increased enrollment of kids into primary and secondary schools with the introduction of totally free education at that level the AKSG is paying subvention per kid to the schools to ensure that kids are not taxed all manner of levies like PTA,Handwork,development etc thats paramount in the overall improvement of education in the state.

With the ministerial projects which began in 2008 and ongoing most schools infrastructures are wearing a new look thorough out the entire state some of the projects are shown on this thread and the state website.

The state polytechnic recently had about 8km of road network complete with drainage commissioned in the school which will make the development of the school much easier.

The state owned university has resumed academic activities and requires more infrastructural upgrade this i believe will be done in increments relative to the growth of student population/need.

On the whole i agree with you that more need to be done by the state govt. but again looking at basic indicators, the current administration is laying a good foundation on which to build on.

Economic Development of Akwa Ibom will be good considering the shaky nature of the Nigerian oil industry with Major importers of Nigerian oil and gas discovering new very large deposits like America with their shale oil and gas , China and India with big off shore discovery.

I think the time has come to take the game higher with investment in Education (building bigger , better equipped universities that would churn real human capital that would drive the next phase of the development), The speedy completion and commissioning of the Ibaka sea port,Establishment of an international refinery with Depots to ensure all round storage and availability of petroleum products.

Akwa Ibom needs to be transformed to an Economic Regional power that would provide a leverage for the economies of the surrounding states, Industries like Fish Trawling / warehousing, Ship building /Repairs, Dry docking of ships , Deep sea ports , 2 medium sized Petro chemical industry that will churn out inputs for industries in Aba , port Harcourt, Onitsha and nnewi can facilitate the journey to Akwa Ibom becoming a Regional Economic Power

I agree with you totally all you stated is needed in Akwa ibom, But you dont put something on nothing and expect it to stand. Prior to 2007 you could count the number of functional roads in Uyo Ala akwa ibom state with your fingertips, but to day that has changed and more roads are still under construction in the state. I bet you will agree that without roads/good infrastructures none of those things you mentioned will be possible. industries needs access roads and the governor is providing those.

If you follow the thread closely and happening in AKS you would find out that most of what you are proposing is part of the vision and dreams of this administration for AKS and he is not just talking about industralizing AKS but he is taking active steps to achieve these vision.
1).all the necessary approvals for the deep sea port has been secured from the FG and the Free trade zone licence has been approved for the ibom industrial city. Whats pending is the private funding for the project which is to be PPP.

2). the access road to the sea port is presently under construction, it will have 2 bridges totalling 1150m the longest bridge in the state and will be one of the most expensive roads in the state the etebi - ewang road will link the area of the port to the east west road also under construction this will be one of the most important economic routes in the state when completed. all this are done to prepare ground for proper industrialization of the state.

3) there is a gas processing facility in Uquo which supplies gas to the 191mw ibom power plant and will also supply to the NIPP at odukpani supply pipelines has been completed and the process is ongoing.
Mobil is building a 500mw power plant in eket presently you must agree that for proper industrialization there must be power, this things are currently taking shape in AKS at the moment.

4) There is a functional Airport in the state which makes doing business in the state more convenient than it ever was.

It would be naive to categorize the effort of the present administration as relegated to only building roads even though he has performed creditably on this regards, and it will also be equally naive to dismiss the role of good road net work in the proper development of any state or region.
The journey towards industrialization of AKS is on course though it might not be as fast as we all will want it but if you look at the indicators on ground you will undoubtedly come to the conclusion that the state is on course and we will definitely get there soon.

BTW few weeks ago Slok group announced that they were going to build the largest petroleum tank farm and an export refinery in the state that's an exciting piece of news and we will keep our finger crossed while awaiting more such positive news from the Private sectors because the govt can only do so much, they can only provide the infrastructures as Akpabio is doing but the real industrialization, if it is to be sustainable must be private sector driven.
