Safety is a process and like all processes it is dynamic! FACTS the nigerian Airspace under the current minister has experienced the most advances in upgrade of its airspace safety equipment:
1)For the first time the nigerian airspace has total radar coverage thats working TRACON.
2)We now have a functional weather reporting/monitoring station in nigeria which gives real time weather information to transport industry thereby ensuring safety.
3) For the first time in recent times all airports now have state of the arts communication systems that enable pilots to communicate with towers/control base, before the present minister GSM phones were used for this communications.
4) For the first time in the history of Nigeria we Have an aviation lab that is capable to decoding the Blackbox recording after crashes and exercise that before now was usually taken abroad and it will take months to have the recording decoded. This saves us valuable time such that when the cause of the crash is discovered it will help to improve standards to prevent future crash.
Besides the upgrades of the airport facilitates/remodelling which also on its own adds to safety as we now have efficient screening devises at the airport to ensure deterrent to nefarious characters, this present aviation minister has done more to secure/ ensure safety of the nigerian airspace than any other minister of aviation in recent times.

unfortunately, there has been two fatal plane crashes under her watch, which means that a lot still needs to be done to secure our airspace and hence the safety process must continue.

we as nigerians should seperate political witch hunting that the present minister is currently undergoing from the facts on grounds about her performance as an aviation minister which has been unequivocally stellar. and stop trivializing her performance as mere beautification of airports when in fact she has done far more!

However, I do agree that the process of air safety in Nigeria needs more oomph.

if you just heard it like i did, its news. The substance of the article is not when it was published, but what it portends! If there is 2million ounces of gold deposit in nigeria why is it not legally mined or concession by the FG for would be minners?

Abagworo: There has always been gold in Western Nigeria. In fact Ilesa is known for gold and many illegal goldmines exist in that axis.

my question is why is it not legally mined? that a huge source of revenue that is left to waste away. Yet we complain of how bad the economy is.

These were the seven minerals that the federal government decided to target for mining in 2010 but so far only limestone is getting some action due to the active cement production in the country occasioned by dangote et.al

The list is not exhaustive as there are more minerals deposits in the country that are just left fallowed and yet we complain of how the economy is mono-dependent! yet we are blessed with all this abundant resources, in the same article, Gold deposit of over 2million ounces was also discovered in western Nigeria.

for those who are notsatisfied with the state of the remodelled airport please bear in mind that new international terminal is presently under construction at the airport and will be constructed to meet all international standards.

The Federal government yesterday raised hopes of a major break-through in the country's effort developing alternative mineral resource aside from oil and gas, when it revealed the discovery of gold to the depth of 3,000 meters with an estimated two million ounces in the Western part of Nigeria.

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke who disclosed this at the presentation of the World Bank-sponsored Nigerian Airborne Geophysical Survey Data phase II in Abuja, said the import of the latest development is that Nigeria may well be on her way to joining countries like Ghana in supplying gold to the world market.
According to Madueke, a coring done last year by the small mining companies, to the depth of 3,000 meters, has proved more than 300,000 ounces, with 2 million ounces estimated..


“ The importance of this fantastic piece of news is probably best appreciated within the context of the knowledge that Nigeria has gold schist belts in the western half of the country that are very similar to those of Ghana”, she said.
She said surveys have shown that Nigeria is richly endowed with a range of solid minerals which if properly managed and exploited may in the near future become the engine of our national economic growth.


She said the Ministry has decided to place special focus on seven of the minerals which includes, bitumen/tar sand with estimated reserves of 27bn barrels of oil equivalent, coal (2.7 billion tonnes), iron ores (3 billion tonnes), limestone (2.23 billion tonnes), barytes (14 million tonnes) and lead/zinc sulphides one million tonnes) .

Madueke described the completion of the geophysical survey phase II as something that would facilitate mineral exploration, ground water prospecting, pollution and geo-hazard monitoring.

“The survey also measures the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRIM) which provide detailed information on terrains, vegetations, landforms, settlements, roads and drainages. The data is therefore extremely useful in security surveilance and development planning”, she said.

The Minister further said plans are underway geological, mineral and geo-chemical mapping of the country with a view to providing all the necessary data needed to adequately tap the mineral resources to our economic advantage.

She said the Ministry is putting in place a gemstone certification process, adding that it has reached agreement with internationally renowned Nigeria-born Jeweler to design a Jewelry line, using exclusively Nigerian gemstones.

This line of Jewelry will be launched for the international and domestic market in March this year, she said.

Earlier, the geologist involved in the preparation the survey data, Prof. Collins Reeves said a mechanism will be put in place to enable interested scientists to study, interpret and analyse the geophysical survey data and that the outcome of their study will be made public next year.

He said the experience of Brazil could be helpful in Nigeria quest for effective utilization of solid mineral resources.

It is a known fact that Nigeria’s airports have suffered untold neglect and decay over 15 years with successive ministers making policy statements on what to do to revive them.

However, some of them are beginning to wear new looks due to the ongoing remodeling projects which some stakeholders have describe as a significant step towards reviving airport infrastructure, as a way of efforts at making them at par with what obtains globally.

Balarabe Usman, a retired pilot who led a group of aviation professionals known as Stakeholders’ Square Table, said they took a critical look at development in the sector, at the end of an executive session, and noted that the country’s airports, which had suffered infrastructural decay in the past, “had suddenly turned into construction sites, due to the ongoing airport remodelling projects, designed to modernise Nigerian airports, in line with existing international standards and practices.” Balarabe, who was a pioneer aviation security staff of the

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and its first Director of Aviation Security Services, noted that “the airport remodelling project is the second most significant airport development project of the country so far after the Aerodrome Development Programme of the mid-1970s that led to the creation of the then Nigerian Airports Authority, the precursor of FAAN. Usman identified the remodeling of airport terminals across the nation of which four (Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Benin) have been commissioned, as a “good way of injecting fresh breath into the system.

“We are in a path to strengthening aviation sector and giving sighs of relief to travellers after some years, all these, including the plan to create designated terminals for perishable and non-perishable cargo are what will drive fruitful investment for the sector,” he said.

Meanwhile, Aviation Round Table (ART), a non-governmental organisation has called on government to provide necessary facilities at airports in a bid to prepare it for security audit by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

Dele Ore, president of the group noted that over the years, no Nigerian airport has been certified by ICAO adding that it behooves on government to make available necessary facilities that will give Nigeria the edge that is needed to pass the audit as the officials prepare to carry out another one.

Why is it that its only Africans are the ones constantly heaping our retrogression on the colonial rule? most of the world was divided up and colonized by Europeans even the US was once a colony.

The Asian countries were also colonized but today they have all risen from the ills of colonialism and have improved their countries bountifully.

Why cant Nigeria do same? am begining to think that these strategy is for us to accommodate out incompetence by shifting blame.

I know colonialism was bad for the colonized all over the world including Nigeria, but my point is that most countries have recorded significant growth after colonialism, we in Nigeria should do same rather than keep blaming colonialism for everything.
