RabbiDoracle: I looked at:
interest income - interest expense.
And compared between 2020 H1 and 2019 H1. There was a decline here even before factoring in impairment charges. You factor impairment charges, there was still decline. This shows there is problem with the loan book. If they are having conference call, try and listen in and see areas where callers will question.
I agree with you there are many areas where Access did better than UBA. But if I'm to choose, I will bet that UBA management will improve on the other expenses because they can control it or stop it (because it is a one-off charge) Unlike having loan issues.

RabbiDoracle: In this context, the two banks considered are commercial banks and not investment banks. So I expect more of net Interest income than net trading in them.
Do you know that investors will wonder and ask questions on the reduce net interest income (for Access bank) to know if there is any issue with the loan books? If there is any issue, how bad is it? How are the provisions going to be? Did they make lower provision for losses which in turn made the PAT look good? These are the questions that can arise from just seeing that lower net interest income.
Investors can ask questions on non-core items but it will not be like the core items. Core item is the life of the bank. Just like Japaul having gross profit of less than N1b in its core operations but declaring N42b in non-core profit. Wetin be that? That tells you that the Japaul can't function after that one off gains.
Now back to UBA, investors will not ask questions on the core function because they can see growth even during this pandemic. However they will ask questions about the 'other expenses'. And you will agree with me that those other expenses can be easily controlled. Like the covid donations, it is within the management prerogative not to donate and if they don't, this adds to the PAT. So you will see that while management can control this line items, but you can't easily control current loan losses.
So if you see decline in Net interest income as nothing, bro, it is a big deal o. This means that some of the loans aren't performing. Thank you Sir RabbiDoracle You have said it all. |

meine: I am heavily invested in both ACCESS and UBA and I wasnt expecting a great result from the UGAZ at this time because COVID is a leveler for every company. However ACCESS the biggest bank in Nigeria by customer base need to up its game and take serious mentorship from GTB.
How can you grow Earnings by a whooping 20% from 324billion in 2019 to 396billion in 2020 yet your EPS dropped by 9% from 1.90 to 1.73? EFFICIENCY is the problem. That is why I said, if ACCESS efficiency improves, it will go very high. |

meine: I just saw this and decided to Chip in. This suggestion of swapping UBA for ACCESS does not seem to make investment sense taking into consideration that you will spend almost 3% on transaction charges when the transaction is completed.
That's not even considering the fact that UBA may pay a higher dividend than ACCESS by full year. If you have premised your argument on a potential higher price or dividend payout by ACCESS this may make sense. Exactly what I said earlier. UBA is more mature compared to ACCESS in terms of Dividend payments and Co-operate Governance |

meine: For traders planning to enter the market right now, it will be advisable to wait for pullbacks that may happen after payment of interim dividends by UGAZ before entering.
For long termers Zenith, Access and UBA are still cheap,my price limit for buying Zenith is N23. Wapco is getting ready for some serious movement, 3rd quarter result will assure doubting thomases of Wapco's full recovery. The new CBN policy that led to a meagre bank deposit rate of 1.35% will definitely bring some liquidity to the market. The good times seems to be here or not far away. What of your price limits for buying ACCESS & UBA? |

onegentleguy: Because based on the Nos in their current financial print, one is clearly ahead of the other. Compare Nos in their statement of CF and BS.
In view of their just released H1, 2020 report, what would u do if u hold 1M unit of UBA and about 370,000 unit of ACCESS BANK? ...someone asked me ealier today.
I asked him; Which is greater btw a possible N170,000+ return and a N250,000+ return(ROI)? ...he said the latter. And I said; then I would seek to swap my holding in both coys.(1M unit in ACCESS and 370,000 in UBA)
The reason I wouldn't sell off all stakes in UBA to buy ACCESS is because an investor can also derive a premium above the difference in div cashflow(including WHT) of N92,500(i.e 342,000-250,000 btw gong all in on access and buying 1m unit) from cap appreciation holding some UBA over the same timeframe.
Dude later informed me he managed a successful swap in UBA for ACCESS. ...he did the swap @ same N6.5 price peg. I simply congratulated him !! We'll see if it was the right portfolio rebalancing move.
Note that the + sign above is because of the consideration for a possible cap appreciation.
For near same reason and more, it would be miles better to swap a certain WAPCO ahead of both BUA and DANGOTE CEMENT looking ahead into the end of the yr. ...I'd say the time to do that is now !! And a swap btw WEMA and JAIZ/UNITY BANK? ...absolutely !! What about a swap btw ZENITH and GTB or a swap btw ACCESS and ZENITH/GTB? ...well, that would depend on a few other factors, part of which is your risk appetite and investment horizon.
NOTE: This isn't just about potential cash flow from dividends alone. ...added to that is the consideration of the degree of possible cap/price appreciation in view of their recent financial reports.
Selah Thank you Sir. I will not swap UBA for ACCESS....UBA will be better than ACCESS in final year Dividend Declaration by Match.. But ACCESS may marginal better price appreciation than UBA...... |

onegentleguy: Relatively flat result, but with a slight drawback. Better than its UBA though !!
While both coys(ACCESS and UBA) remain underpriced, I will score the former slightly better than the latter.
