The Governor of Rivers State, Barrister Nyesom Wike has signed in law the Value Added Tax [VAT] into law along with other sensitive four other laws that include a ban on open grazing.

The Governor signed the Bills into law at 11am today at the Government House at Rivers State.

He signed the law in defiance to the federal government and called on other State government to do the same. He cited Lagos and Ogun State government.

At least three students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) have been feared killed and two missing after the attack on commuters along Rukuba road on Saturday.

Five other students are receiving treatment in hospital in the State capital as a result of injuries sustained in a reprisal attack after 23 commuters were killed.

Chairman National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) University of Jos chapter, Comrade Jeremiah Dalong, stated these to reporters in Jos on Tuesday.

He called on the Plateau State, Federal Government and the Management of the University of Jos to urgently send food to the stranded students at their hostels.

The Emir of Bichi, Nasir Ado Bayero, has said he wished his daughter, Zahra, completed her studies before getting married to Yusuf, the only son of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Students at the federal university of Jos, Plateau State find themselves sleeping in panic as the menace of banditry reached the hostels of the federal institution. According to information available to 247ureports.com gathered from sources within the federal institution, the bandits believed to be either killer Fulani herdsmen or Boko Haram launched an attack at the hostel of the university at about 7:30pm.

Sporadic gunshots were heard at the entrance of the institution. The shots were coming from various direction. The attacker were approaching the female hostel when the students began running for their lives – and raising alarms – and making contacts with the outside world.

Although details remain sketchy, it was gathered that the security forces responded to the scene and repelled the bandits – who ran away. The security forces included the military forces who rode in motorcycles and Pickup trucks, and police officers who came fully geared.

Indonesia has formally apologised over the manhandling of a Nigerian diplomat in the South-East Asia country.

A viral of video of Mr. Mohammed Buba, an accredited Nigerian diplomat, being rough-handled by Indonesian immigration officials, had surfaced online earlier, prompting Nigeria to threaten to review its relationship with the country.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs regrets the incident on August 7th,” Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah said, the Associated Press reported on Thursday.

“This is an isolated incident, and is in no way related to the commitment of the Indonesian government in carrying out its obligations as host country or in accordance with the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations.”

According to records, about N1.47trn was spent by the federal government in maintaining, revamping and running its four moribund refineries between 2015 and 2020. In spite of this huge sum, the government has approved a fresh $5.74billion (about N2.35trn) for the rehabilitation of the Port-Harcourt (old and new), Warri and Kaduna refineries, and for taking some shares in the Dangote Refinery project.

However, these approvals to spend nearly twice of what had been spent on the refineries in the past five years on rehabilitation have not gone well with experts in the oil and gas industry as they question the refineries’ viability and extent of the impact on ordinary Nigerians.

Some oil and gas experts have, however, hailed the move to repair the Port-Harcourt and other refineries, citing the expected cut in current import burden.

According to a petroleum industry commentator, Suraj Oyewale, government should not spend more money on the refineries; instead, the refineries should be sold off or concessioned.

Oyewale said, “It is clear that the government cannot manage these refineries. Yar’adua made a big mistake by reversing the sale of the refineries by Obasanjo in 2007.

“I don’t mean to sound like a doomsday analyst, but I don’t see anything coming out of this repair. There have been many turnaround maintenances carried out on these refineries in the past three decades, but it gets worse with every maintenance project.”

Barring any hitch, the leadership of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will on Monday hold a crucial meeting with Governors elected on the platform of the party, to decide the fate of the national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus.

Forces believed to be spearheaded by the Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, have been championing the removal from office of the chairman whose tenure expires in December.

Those calling for the ouster of the chairman have expressed preference for the setting up of a caretaker committee to replace the Secondus-led National Working Committee (NWC).

Suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari has deleted a Facebook post of his statement denying taking a bribe from Ramon Abbas popularly known as Hushpuppi, checks by The Nation has revealed.

Hushpuppi had alleged he gave Kyari money to jail the rival after a dispute over a $1.1 million scam on Qatari businesspeople.

But Kyari denied, saying he never collected or demanded money from Hushpuppi.

Kyari had released a statement on his authentic Facebook page narrating how he only connected the Hushpuppi to a fabric dealer whom the latter paid about N300, 000.

He also edited his statement to further include another money-related case he handled involving Hushpuppi.

But he deleted where he had earlier claimed to have linked Hushpuppi up with his tailor.

“Nobody demanded or collected any money from Abbas Hushpuppi. He can be interviewed publicly in the presence of world media by the people holding him to confirm this,” the now-deleted version reads.

Suspected armed herdsmen invaded the Mgbuji community in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State and killed eight people, injured and kidnapped many people, and also destroyed farmlands.

There are rising fears in the community that causalities may rise in the coming days due to the level of injuries sustained by some of the villagers who were caught in the attacks.

A villager, Chinaza Akan, who witnessed the incident said one of the casualties was a pregnant woman who was killed by the armed herdsmen, her stomach opened and fetus removed.

Lead Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Ifeanyi Ejiofor on Thursday alleged the Department of State Security Services (DSS) denied him access his client

This, he said, was in violation of a court order.

He shared a copy of the order by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court that access must be granted to his client.

He said the DSS insisted the request to meet Kanu would be looked into and accordingly approved by their DG before access can be granted.

In a statement on his Facebook he said: “On the 26th Day of July 2021, His Lordship, Hon. Justice Nyako of Court No. 2 Federal High Court Abuja, after listening to our application, wherein I raised serious concerns about the safety and medical condition of Our Client, whom ordinarily was supposed to be produced in court on that day, ordered that the Detention Authority (DSS) should allow us access to him.

To enable the party transmit their gubernatorial candidate to the INEC, the INEC had devised a mechanism. The mechanism required the INEC to generate a special secret code to be made available to the party national chairman to enable the party to log on to the INEC online platform to download the necessary form for the gubernatorial candidate and the deputy gubernatorial candidate.

The INEC made the secret code available to Chief Victor Oye at the capacity of the national chairman of the APGA. The code was used to download the forms for the gubernatorial candidate and the deputy on July 2, 2021. The forms were filled out by the candidate and the deputy. Another code was generated by the INEC and made available to the party national chairman – to enable him submit forms online to the INEC platform. Both forms were submitted by Chief Oye on July 2, 2021. A confirmation of receipt was generated and delivered to the party national chairman. On the same day, a hard copy of the forms were delivered to the INEC office in Abuja.

As expected, the INEC was bound to publish the names of the party’s candidate seven days after the names are submitted to the INEC. In APGA’s case, the names were to be published on July 9, 2021.

But INEC did not.

Rather, INEC waited till July 16, 2021 to publish the names – for reasons known only to the top officials of the Commission.

Justice Obiora Nwabunike said this at the hearing on Motion Exparte by Dr Ugochukwu Uba which among Orders barred Mr Valentine Ozigbo from parading himself as PDP candidate.

Nwabunike also ruled that the Motion Exparte could no longer be heard as it had abated following the inability of the legal teams to conclude their responses before seven days which elapsed today.

The Order in Motion A558m/ 2021 obtained on July 5 also asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reject any name submitted to by PDP pending the determination of the substantive suit.

The defendants in the suits were INEC, PDP and Ozigbo.
