Within ten minutes from the moment when the aircraft took off from the Kano airport with passengers filled to capacity, the aircraft began to swerve uncontrollably. Sources said the incident was caused by an engine failure while others attributed the incident to a bird strike.

One of the passengers from the flight who agreed to speak with our reporter, Dr Samaila Suleiman, stated that it was a near-death experience for him. He faulted the airline for negligence. He heard an usual loud sound from the aircraft engine when the aircraft was taking off.

The morning of Saturday has become a bloody one for thirteen police officers in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States who meet their waterloo at the hands of the dreaded unknown gunmen.

In Akwa Ibom, they struck the Odoro Ikpe Police Station in Ini LGA killing six officers on duty.

In Rivers State, seven policemen were feared killed when two police stations in Obio-Akpor and Emuoha Local Government Areas were hit deep in the night of Friday and early morning of Saturday.

At the Elimgbu police station, three policemen were feared killed, while two were feared killed at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Rumuji. A security vehicle was aso reportedly burnt.

In the video recording obtained by this medium, youths, believed to be northern youths, could be seen looting the properties belonging to Kubwa resident in a brazen broad daylight robbery without fear. Our source noted that the group had a propensity to destabilize the State with mere preaching – and the Governor was fully aware.

It was a harvest of deaths in Anambra state yesterday and early this morning when four persons were gunned down by suspected cultists in Awka Capital, two police men and a suspected hoodlum killed when Police zone 13 station was burnt .

But the pesky question is; if men had their way running the affairs of Nigeria without any set criteria, why should a bar be set for women since there was no condition in situ for men? The answer to this is that we have to start looking for competent leaders, while we advocate gender parity. There is no doubt both qualified and unqualified women currently in positions in government. However, it’s important that we pursue gender parity while not neglecting competence. Anyone running for office needs to be competent regardless of gender. One of the age-old arguments against gender parity as regards elective office is that competence will suffer if we insist on gender equality. This has been proved to be untenable; some Nigerians are just unwilling to put in the effort to find competent women for their organisations and leadership positions.

What are the hurdles that make women who have been successful in the private sector and other areas reluctant to pivot and apply themselves in public service and party politics? How can women-focused organisations such as ElectHerNG, Winbiz and Feminist Coalition help strategise and improve the chances of women in upcoming elections?

One of the challenges women face along this path is navigating a sinister world where no real procedure is followed — words are not kept, promises are not sacred, and meetings are held at odd hours. For woman/women to be elected as President or Governor, there must be room to ensure the emergence of women in top leadership positions in political parties — not just as women leaders but as party chairpersons, zonal heads, ward chairpersons, public relations, and any other position that will allow more women representation as party executives, and ultimately as delegates — an integral part of the screening process for candidates — and hopefully they will then be able to fight for more women representation in elective posts.

There is also the challenge of funding; elections in Nigeria are capital intensive. In Nigeria today, it costs a fortune to run for any political office let alone that of the President. For instance, Feminist Coalition, a group of young women have shown they know how to raise funds in unconventional ways, considering how they were able to mobilise funds for the #EndSARS protests. So, a female presidential candidate could partner them to crowdsource funds for her electioneering activities — enough to reach every nook and cranny of the 774 local government areas.

Chief Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, is to chair the 11th edition of the Annual Arewa House lecture in Kaduna.

This was made known in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) by Tinubu’s Media Aide, Mr Tunde Rahman, on Thursday in Lagos.

March 17, 2021, around a small community near Karshi by the name Gugugu, a Tiv woman was raped by four Fulani men and killed. The Tiv woman who is a mother of two and wife – had gone to her farm to harvest beans – while harvesting, she was attacked by four Fulani men who raped her repeatedly and then killed her. The case was brought to the attention of the Karshi police station. Arrest was made with the help of the Fulani community who gathered up the four men and handed them over to the police. One of the sisters to the arrested men narrated how the four men raped and killed the Tiv woman to the police. A case file was opened and investigation was initiated.

But few days into the investigation, the husband to the murdered Tiv woman had a change of heart. He came to the police station pleading for the case and the investigation to be halted – he does not “want any trouble with Fulani”. The investigating police officer stopped the investigation and closed the case.

Three days later, March 21, 2021, the Fulani community from the Gugugu area where the rape occurred returned to the police station to lay a complaint. They claimed seventeen [17] of their cows died mysteriously as they went to the located where the Tiv was killed – to craze. They wanted to file an official complaint.

A Magistrate on Wednesday ordered a 25-year-old man, Adamu Sabiu, to sweep the court premises for seven days for cheating.

Chief Magistrate, Mustapha Sa’ad-Datti, convicted Sabiu, who lives in Dandago Quarters Kano, of two counts of cheating, contrary to section 322 of the Penal Code.

Sa’ad-Datti also cautioned Sabiu against committing crimes and to be of good behaviour.
