It seems the border closure isn't helping rice production like I believed. The productivity problem has to be addressed before Nigeria becomes sufficient in rice. Nigeria's rice imports are set to grow this year.

Blue3k, a question I would like to ask is that what happened to all the money the cbn has been giving out as loans to rice farms.

Why are the initiatives by the govt still yet to bear fruit ?

You said "just 26% of Indians speak Hindi." That "JUST" in your statement is like Hindi is like implying Hindi is a minor language in Indian. But it is the most widely spoken language in India...43% speak it (not 26%)...so tell, me which other Indian language has almost half the population speaking it?

I said just 26 percent because you said that ALL indians speak just one language , Hindi.

In India just like Nigeria they also experience ethnic clashes leading to the loss of lives.

You are a Nairalander...I'm sure you see how Igbo and Yoruba people fight everyday here. You also know how people would rather have someone from their ethnic group as the president, even if the person is incapable. How will a country progress when it is made up of too many ethnic groups that can't get along. Some people are even happy when things go bad so that they can laugh at people from the ethnic group of the president, or people that support the president.

The truth is that Nairaland is not real life .

In real life we don't really see igbos and yorubas you fighting up and down

@ the bolded , you are right.

In Nigeria we may be over 350 ethnic groups , but remember that most of those 350 are in the North and the North thinks with one mind.

They act like one and Northerners are United by a common language which is Hausa.

Are you Indian? Or do you live in India? Where did you get your information from?

I don't have to be Indian before knowing that Hindi is not the only language in India.

Just Google " languages of India " and " percentage of Indians that speak Hindi "

Please go on Google and search for "Number of ethnic groups in China." And then search for "Number of ethnic groups in Nigeria." This search will give you an idea why it is so hard for Nigeria to progress. China has ten times the population of Nigeria, but we have 5 times more ethnic groups than they have.

In simple terms can you explain how numerous ethnic groups are a stumbling block to economic growth ?

And all of those 2,000 ethnic groups speak ONE LANGUAGE...HINDI. You can't compare that to Nigeria where we have over 520 languages. Language divides people. This is a fact.

Lmao who told you all indians speak Hindi.just 26 percent of indians speak Hindi as their mother tongue.

Actually they're 1 state short. You need 2/3 of state assemblies to agree. South and North central only add up to 23. If the supreme court rules correctly and bans hisbah and other security agencies everyone will forced come to table. Plan b is to get one state to agree to decentralize police.

Wait o , if 2 / 3 must agree , how did southern states ever agree to hisbah and sharia
Politics / Re: Amend constitution: Police Decentralization One Way Forward by urahara(m): 3:29pm On Jan 15, 2020

I notice alot of people asking why hisbah of CJTF is legal when it doesn't matter. The supreme court may agree all these things are clearly illegal. Then you're back to a need to amend the constitution. I really dont why people just avoid doing the hard work.

The sections of constitution to amend from the exclusive list are as follows.

2. Arms, ammunition and explosives.
45. Police and other government security services established by law.
48. Prisons

And again i feel that South south , South West , South East and North Central have the numbers to press in NASS to ensure that states have their own state police inorder to put a stop to this fulani herdsmen madness.

Politics / Re: Ajaokuta Steel To Gulp $1.5 Billion, Gets 2022 Completion Date by urahara(m): 9:29am On Jan 15, 2020
omohayek:

POSCO first tried to cope by diversifying away from steelmaking into unrelated businesses like trading and energy, but that strategy didn't work. Now the company is moving upmarket by concentrating on specialized types of steel for more demanding customers like carmakers; since POSCO can't beat the Chinese in more mainstream varieties of steel, it's also decided to team up with them, by tying up with companies like HBIS in joint ventures.

https://www.just-auto.com/news/posco-joins-forces-with-chinas-hbis-in-high-end-auto-steel_id192570.aspx

All the cheerleaders for Ajaokuta on here are utterly deluded, ignorant of both economic realities and the project's 40+ years of utter failure. As Ajaokuta was based on outmoded Soviet technology, it was already obsolete at the time it was supposed to be handed over in 1982; is it now, when even the most modern Russian designs can't even dream of competing with China, that Ajaokuta is suddenly supposed to become a self-financing production wonder?

The most senseless thing about all of this is that steel isn't even a high-margin business. People with sense would realize that the future lies with more knowledge-intensive fields like software, machine-learning, biotechnology, etc., and that all the money being poured into useless white elephants like Ajaokuta and the refineries that are perpetually in "turn around maintenance" would be far better spent investing in higher-quality universal education for Nigeria's rapidly expanding youthful population (and on family planning for their overly fecund parents). But that would be hard work requiring a long-term effort, and with no new shiny plants or buildings for illiterates to gawk at, so neither the ignorant Nigerian masses nor their equally ignorant political leaders take an interest - not even when the advice is coming from someone like Bill Gates!

They should just sell it !!!!

If at the end of the day it becomes operational , I know for sure it will simply be a loss making enterptise as with all other things Nigeria govt owned.

Imported steel is bound to be far cheaper than the locally made one. This will place local users of steel at an uncompetitive position.. It just isn't fair.

There's a glut in steel on the world market

Normal na.

But if Chinese steel is so cheap , how does POSCO cope ? Does South Korea ban steel imports too ?
