Phuket police have arrested a Nigerian man and his Thai wife for allegedly robbing and shooting a Russian woman in Muang Phuket district in Thailand. Both were also accused in other theft cases in the houses of foreigners.

The Nigerian man was identified as Chijioke James Chukwunweike, 27, and his Thai wife, Sasipha Nakonthaisong. They were apprehended by police on Thursday night (Aug 31) at home.

Both were charged for breaking into the rented house of Mrs Elena Kharenko, 51, on Wednesday night as she was sleeping. But she woke up and shouted for help, and was shot.

Both escaped with her safe, while she was rushed to hospital for treatment. Police said the search of Chukwunweike’s house produced lot of valuables believed to have been stolen, including gold necklaces, computer notebooks, a Louis Vuitton handbag and luxury watches.

One Mr. Etim Mesembe was killed in a renewed gang war on Monday night, August 28 at Eyo Ita Street Calabar, Cross River State Capital.

Until his death, Mesembe was contesting for the position of a Councillor in Calabar South Local Government Area Ward 8.

It was gathered that the deceased was standing on the street when the assailant suspected to be members of by Vikings and Skylow cult groups, whom sources say had mobilised for a hit, spotted him.

"After a shout from one of them that he was the one, he was shot and cut with machetes several times. His death came 24 hours after a fight between the Skylow gang and Scorpion gang on Sunday night had led to the death of a Scorpion member in Ekpo Abasi," the report said.

Sources say the Skylow planned a reprisal for the Scorpion gang who had killed about four of their members during the last war. And,on Sunday night, the gang planned to hit Scorpion members around Mayne Avenue, Ekpo Abasi and Anantigha axis where three teams were waiting and ambushed any fleeing Scorpion member.

"The recent war is suspected to be connected to the killing of one Ecomoc in June due to ticketing competition between gang groups after government officials indirectly recruited them through phoney companies serving as revenue collection agencies."

Over 100, 000 persons are said to have been displaced by the massive flood currently happening in Makurdi, the Benue state capital. President Buhari in a statement released on his Facebook page, sympathized with the victims, adding that he has ordered officials of the National Emergency Management Agency NEMA, to mobilize its personnel and resources that would aid the affected communities. Canadians will soon have a third option to identify their gender on passports under new rules that will come into effect by the end of the month.

Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen said he was making the change so all Canadians can feel safe to be themselves and express their gender as they choose.

"By introducing an 'X' gender designation in our government-issued documents, we are taking an important step towards advancing equality for all Canadians regardless of gender identity or expression," Hussen said in a statement.

Beginning Aug. 31, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will introduce an interim measure to allow people to identify themselves as having a gender that is unspecified.

The federal government did not say what the interim measures would include, but did explain that they will only be in place until the government can print documents with an X instead of an M for male or F for female.

Officials said the change is meant to offer transgender individuals the option to accurately describe their gender identity without being forced to identify as their birth gender.

The G.O of Salvation Ministry, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, has declared that anyone that is 35 of age and is still unmarried is irresponsible. He said this during a recent program at the church in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The cleric admonished single men and women to look out for responsible men and women to be their partners, adding that it was not right to get old before getting married.

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 43-year-old man for allegedly having carnal knowledge with three minors, aged nine and 12 years.

The man identified as Ini Udoh was accused of defiling the girls by luring them into his room under the pretense of sending them to run errands for him, in Ijoko community, Sango.

The‎ Command Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspect who lived in the same compound with the victims’ parents usually lured the girls into his room whenever their parents and his own wife were not around.

The police spokesperson said ‎the crime was unravelled when the mother of one of the girls noticed ‘what looked like sperm on her daughter’s panties while washing it and this aroused her curiosity.’

“It was this that led to revelation that the suspect has been having sex with her and two others whenever their parents are not at home,” Mr Oyeyemi said. Mr. Oyeyemi said the three victims have been taken to the General Hospital for medical attention.

He added that the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered immediate transfer of the case to the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and possible prosecution of the suspect.

A female Muslim pilgrim from Igala-mela local government area of Kogi state, Hajiya Asmau Iyawo Abdullahi has died of an illness while performing this year's hajj in Mecca.

The state’s Hajj Commission chairman, Shiekh Lukman Abdullahi Imam, who announced the death while giving an update of the Hajj exercise in Mecca, said the pilgrim died Tuesday morning.

"She died after all attempts by our medical team to treat her failed; she was an elderly person and her health deteriorated immediately she arrived the holy land. May Allah forgive her of all her wrongdoings; she has since been buried in the city of Makkah."

Ghanaian Reggae musician Ekow Micah has stood his ground regarding his stance for smoking “wee”. Micah referred to the Holy Bible and cited an instance where God smoked marijuana popularly known as “wee”.

In an interview with Akwasi Aboagye on Peace FM’s “Entertainment Review”, Ekow Micah said he smokes because the almighty God smoked. He quoted Psalm 18:7-8 to buttress his point.

“The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because he was angry. Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it”.

This news comes after dancehall artist Samini admitted to also consuming the illegal narcotic in the comfort of his home. Ekow Micah was arrested, charged and put on trial for possessing illegal wee. He was later acquitted and discharged by an Accra Circuit Court.

One of Andrea Voss’ retirement goals is seeing different parts of the country, including Hawaii. Andrea and her husband, Steve Voss, are a year and a half into their retirement.

Last week, they took a trip to Yellowstone, but when they got back on Friday, they noticed there was a serious issue with that money they’ve saved for retirement. Steve Voss said. "I logged into my account and it’s a zero-dollar balance.”

Added Andrea Voss, “He told me and I was like ‘You’ve got to be kidding. This can’t happen to me. This happens to other people.’” Steve Voss says someone had used his personal details to liquidate their account.

The check had already gone out. “The package has been sent but redirected from my home for pickup somewhere else,” he said. Unified police said the package hadn’t been picked up yet, so they set up a plan to be there when someone came to get it.

Eventually, police said two men showed up to get the package and were arrested. They said the men had fake out-of-state IDs and a separate 401(k) check from another person.

Unified police detective Shawn Fausett said all credit is due to the Vosses for checking their account. “If he wouldn’t have checked his balance until (Monday) morning at 9 a.m., it would have been too late because the suspects would have been gone.”

Police identified the two suspects as Temilade Adekunle and Abdulrasheed Yusuf. They arrested the two for investigation of forgery, ID theft and communications fraud.

Police believe the two had flown into Salt Lake City to pick up the checks. Officials believe the men were getting ready to leave town again. The total amount between these two checks, police say, was around $120,000.

Now, the Vosses are extra careful and they hope others will keep an eye out as well. 401(k) is a retirement savings plan sponsored by an employer. It lets workers save and invest a piece of their paycheck before taxes are taken out.

A woman has abducted the three children of her neighbors, just four days after she moved into a rented apartment in Mowe, Ogun State. The yet-to-be identified woman took – John Segun, 5, Darasimi Ilesanmi, (two months old) and Fikayomi Bankole, 3, from their parents.

She told their parents that she was going to a nearby shop in the neighborhood to buy them confectionaries. But she disappeared with them. Although the children belong to different to parents, they, however, live in the same building.

The incident occurred on Sunday last week. The abduction was discovered after one of the parents, tired of waiting and suspected foul play, raised the alarm. The suspect was said to have taken Darasimi from her mother where she was washing clothes in the compound.

She even asked the woman to change Darasimi’s clothes that she wanted to take her out to buy biscuits for her down the street. When the distraught parents stormed the Mowe Police Station, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the station, told them investigation would commence immediately.

A few days later, he told the parents that he had already passed the information to the Ogun State Police Command, stressing that the Commissioner of Police was aware of the matter. He further told them to relax that their children would soon be rescued.

A 17-year-old male inmate, Silas Anidi, who slit the throat of an 11-year-old girl in 2015, is among 23 inmates that escaped from the Ministry of Women Affairs and Development Remand Home in Sapele.

Anidi allegedly slit the throat of Aghogho Igbi. The only son of the G.O of God Peculiar Evangelical Ministry, was caught by neighbors while he also attempted to kill the deceased sister, Favour, aged 13

Though the incident was carefully kept away from the public, investigation by Vanguard revealed that the inmates within the age bracket of 14 and 17 years escaped from custody on July 30th and August 2nd.

“The escaped inmates are being held for various capital offences ranging from rape, robbery, murder and burglary,” the staff, said.

The source said: “The routine has always been to open the door of the home for the minors every morning for their daily chores, while two or three of them go to prepare their meal but the female correction officer, Mrs. Esther Micah, somehow took the keys to church and did not return until 11:30 am.

Upon her return, hungry and probably angered by her actions, 11 of them attacked her and fled through the back fence of the home and of course with only three staff on duty, there was little, they could do.

Two other inmates escaped the next day when the same correction officer went to open the door for them to have their bath.

Three days later, 12 other inmates plotted their getaway when the broke the lock to their hall with an iron bar and escaped through the back of the home.” Security at the home has been very porous while the perimeter fencing at the back of the home has collapsed since last year with the home being in a poor state of neglect.

Confirming the escape of the inmates when contacted, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniamaka said: “Three of the staff are been investigated and will be charged for negligence of duty.”

A man who was arrested by the police in Niger State for alleged robbery, has denied the crime, saying he was being coerced by the police to make a confessional statement.

25-year-old Kingsley Ibe was arrested by the police Special Anti-Robbery Squad on the allegation that he connived with other hoodlums to rob one Yusuf Isah of Gauraka, Sabo-Wuse council.

The police claimed that Ibe and his gang members carted away Gauraka’s properties including a 49-inch LG television, a 32-inch Panasonic television, four wrist watches, one Techno handset, one Samsung galaxy S3 handset, one Infinix Note 4 phone, jewelry, one Jingcheng motorcycle and N200,000 cash.

But Ibe vehemently denied being a robber, saying he would rather die than admit to a crime he did not commit, insisting that the police knew the real culprits but refused to go after them.

Punchng quoted him as saying: “I don’t know why police are keeping me here. I am not an armed robber and they cannot force me to be one. It is better I die for the offence I committed than to die for what I know nothing about.

I am not a thief and cannot admit to what I knew nothing about. The motorcycle they accused me of stealing was not stolen by me, the police knew where it was coming from."

He revealed that it was because he had no one to speak for him that the police were plotting to implicate him. But the police spokesperson in the state, Comfort Olawumi, said the suspect was sighted by the complainant’s sibling, Usman Ithado, with the stolen motorcycle, adding that he was given a chase before he was apprehended by police operatives.

She added that the police recovered the motorcycle from the suspect, noting that he would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.

Ongoing police investigation of suspected kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, alias Evans, has revealed that he was also involved in crimes in South Africa, it was gathered yesterday.

That is besides his alleged illegal procurement of a Ghanaian passport that bears his passport photograph but a Ghanaian name. Police spokesman, Mr. Moshood Jimoh, told The Nation that the investigation has also led to the arrest of more associates of Evans who were found to be probably wealthier and living bigger than him.

He said: ”You may recall that a Federal High Court granted us a three month remand warrant for Evans. We are just into the second month now and before the expiration of the third month, it is expected that we should be taking him to court.

The little time is to ensure that we conduct a thorough and detailed investigation. So we need a little time to properly round things up and ensure that he is properly prosecuted because Nigerians will not be happy if we lose such a case in court on the basis of technical matters.”

He said relations of former victims of Evans’ are among those being detained by the police. They are suspected of giving information about the former kidnap victims to Evans. He advised the public to be security conscious at all times to avoid falling prey to kidnappers.

His words: “In the course of this investigation we have other prime suspects including people who broke away from Evans’ gang to start their own gang – they left Evans to go and do a similar (kidnapping) business.

Some of the suspects we later picked after detectives’ interactions with Evans are even living larger than Evans. We are going to ensure that we don’t make things public until we gather all our evidence towards securing a conviction in court.

I won’t give you figures but they are many suspects. There is a special group of criminal suspects that are referred to as ‘catchers’; in criminal syndicates, they are the people that identify targets and give information about innocent people."

Gay Nigerian Rights Activist Granted Asylum in Britain After 13-year Legal Battle

Nigerian gay rights activist who was told by a judge that she was faking her sexuality has won a 13-year battle to be granted asylum in the UK.

Aderonke Apata feared being killed or imprisoned if she returned home, but her application for asylum was rejected for a second time in 2015 after the judge said he did not believe she was a lesbian.

Her cause gained widespread support when it was revealed that, in an act of desperation, she sent a private video to the judge as evidence of her sexuality.

As a result, multiple petitions in support of Ms Apata’s asylum bid were created, gaining hundreds of thousands of signatures between them.

The “Asylum for Aderonke” Facebook page, run by supporters, has now been updated to say her application had been successful and “she has been granted refugee status”.

After being granted asylum, Ms Apata said she was “overwhelmed with gladness,” but remains angry “knowing that there are other LGBTI people seeking asylum facing the same fear of deportation that I had just overcome.”

“I was just crying on the phone with my solicitor when he broke the news to me,” she said. “I must have embarrassed him. I wasn’t assimilating all of the information he was giving to me on the phone as I was crying and singing.”
