The Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, has reacted to the confirmation by the University of Ibadan, UI that he graduated from the institution.

There had been a series of speculations flying around that the Edo state governor forged his certificate. The rumour was further fueled when the APC national chairman Adams Oshiomhole challenged the authenticity of the embattled governor’s university degree certificate.

While inaugurating the APC’s screening and appeal committees for its members contesting the governorship primary in Edo, Oshiomhole was quoted to have said:

“Someone should approach the UI and end this matter once and for all. “If the certificate Obaseki parades is that of the UI, find out how did he pass senate screening of those days? I’m aware that in those days when this man never dreamt of becoming a governor, every student, no matter your status or your family name, must pass screening.”

However, the management of University of Ibadan, UI in a statement by its Registrar, Olubunmi Faluyi, confirmed that the governor graduated from the institution, adding that he studied Classics.

“Obaseki gained admission to the University in 1976 and graduated in 1979 with a Second Class Honours, Lower Division. “Records of his Admission and Graduation are intact in the archives of the University,” Faluyi said.

In his reaction to the University of Ibadan, UI’s confirmation of his studentship, gov. Godwin Obaseki tweeted via his official Twitter handle: “Posterity will always vindicate the just.”

The picture is now getting clearer to the State governors that the federal government is not ready to bow down to the pressure over the executive order 10 granting financial autonomy for the state legislature and judiciary.

The federal government had given hints on the possibility of retracing its decision after meeting with the governors through the Nigerian Governors’ Forum chairman, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state.

However, in an aftermath move, Abubakar Malami, the attorney general of the federation and minister of justice claimed there is no going back on the executive order 10 granting approval for the autonomy.

Recall President Muhammadu Buhari had on Friday, May 22, 2020, granted the autonomy which mandated the state governors to always include the allocations of the state legislature and the state judiciary in the first-line charge of their budgets.

In an outrageous manner, the governors, who met under the aegis of Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF rejected the president’s order and described it as an unnecessary distraction.

It must be made known to these governors that this is just a reflection of the principle of separation of power which the governors have all sworn to through the constitution.

The 36 state governors have finally admitted the constitutionality of the state legislature and judiciary.

He said presidency and the state governors will fashion out the modalities of implementing the directives which will see the budge of the other two arms submitted separately henceforth.

Speaking through his special assistant on media, Umar Jibrilu Gwandu, Malami explained that contrary to the speculation, the governors did not halt the implementation of the order.

Malami said the executive order will help entrench the principle of democracy till the grassroots. Meanwhile, Governor Fayemi met with the president on Monday, June 8, and disclosed that “President Buhari agreed to delay the gazetting.”

He said the 36 governors have reached a consensus to recognise the autonomy for the state lawmakers and the judiciary system.”

Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu has been moved to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, for intensive care after testing positive for COVID-19.

According to anonymous sources, the governor is being treated at his home in Abuja with a sizable number of medical personnel on the ground to ensure he gets the best care possible.

Besides medical staff who have been attending to him, it was gathered that the governor also arrived Abuja with a retinue of aides and security personnel, some of whom are believed to have also tested positive for COVID-19.

The German Police say they had an easy time tracking down a petty thief after he forgot his own son at the scene of the crime.

The Bautzen police, Saturday, said that the 29-year-old suspect ran off when the five euros ($5,65) worth of goods he was trying to steal triggered an alarm at a supermarket check-out late Friday.

Police said the man’s 8-year-old son was left behind “and so the culprit was quickly identified.”

However, this a new twist to our life as humans. In the past, a lover search for a dictionary to learn vocabularies and wise words to use in winning the heart of a lady but the reality now is the lady (unprofessional motivational speaker) search for quotes to announce an end to a relationship.

If you really want to give your ex the impression that you’re over them, posting memes and motivational quotes are not the way. The best way to do that is to act as if nothing happened, and that should also reflect in what you post on your WhatsApp status or anywhere else. By the way who invited such a habit, if I may ask? Go ahead and share normal stuff on your stories, don’t add up to being motivational speaker, an unprofessional one for that matter by posting anything relating to breakups or relationships. President Vladimir Putin, Tuesday, approved Russia’s nuclear deterrent policy which enables him to use atomic weapons in response to a conventional strike targeting the nation’s critical government and military infrastructure.

By including a non-nuclear attack as a possible trigger for Russian nuclear retaliation, the policy appears to send a warning signal to the U.S. The new expanded wording reflects Russian concerns about the development of prospective weapons that could give Washington the capability to knock out key military assets and government facilities without resorting to atomic weapons.

In line with Russian military doctrine, the new document reaffirms that the country could use nuclear weapons in response to a nuclear attack or aggression involving conventional weapons that “threatens the very existence of the state.”

But the policy document now also offers a detailed description of situations that could trigger the use of nuclear weapons. They include the use of nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction against Russia or its allies and an enemy attack with conventional weapons that threatens the country’s existence.

In addition to that, the document now states that Russia could use its nuclear arsenals if it gets “reliable information” about the launch of ballistic missiles targeting its territory or its allies and also in the case of ”enemy impact on critically important government or military facilities of the Russian Federation, the incapacitation of which could result in the failure of retaliatory action of nuclear forces.”

The reference to a non-nuclear strike as a possible trigger for nuclear retaliation reflects longtime Moscow concern about U.S. military plans.

The buildup of conventional forces near Russia‘s borders and the deployment of missile defense assets and space-based weapons are among the threats identified by Moscow in the new document.

U.S.-Russia relations are at post-Cold War lows over the Ukrainian crisis, the accusations of Russian meddling in the U.S. 2016 presidential election and other differences.

Amid the tensions, the Kremlin has repeatedly voiced concern about the deployment of U.S. and allied forces in the Baltics and NATO drills near Russia’s borders.

Russian officials have cast the U.S.-led missile defense program and its plans to put weapons in orbit as a top threat, arguing that the new capability could tempt Washington to strike Russia with impunity in the hope of fending off a retaliatory strike.

In 2018, Vladimir Putin revealed an array of new weapons that he said would render U.S. missile defense useless. They include the Avangard hypersonic vehicle capable of flying 27 times faster than the speed of sound and making sharp maneuvers on its way to target to dodge the enemy’s missile shield. The first unit armed with the Avangard entered duty in December.

Another doomsday weapon that Vladimir Putin has mentioned is the nuclear-armed and atomic-powered Poseidon underwater drone capable of causing a devastating tsunami near an enemy coast. Its tests are continuing.

Last year, both Moscow and Washington withdrew from the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty. The only U.S.-Russia nuclear arms control agreement still standing is the New START treaty, which was signed in 2010 by U.S. President Barack Obama and then-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The pact limits each country to no more than 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads and 700 deployed missiles and bombers and envisages sweeping on-site inspections to verify compliance.

Russia has offered to extend the New START, which expires in February 2021, while the Trump administration has pushed for a new arms control pact that would also include China. Moscow has described that idea as unfeasible, pointing at Beijing’s refusal to negotiate any deal that would reduce its much smaller nuclear arsenal.

Russian diplomats said the Avangard could be included in the New START if it’s extended. They also voiced readiness to open talks to discuss the Poseidon and other new weapons along with prospective U.S. strategic assets.

In a call with members of his Security Council over the weekend, Putin warned that the New START treaty is bound to expire, but “the negotiations on that crucial issue, important not just for us but for the entire world, have failed to start.”

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, Monday, made a submission that the major cause of the crisis in the state was the All Progressives Congress, APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

The visit is coming ahead of the All Progressives Congress, APC governorship primary in the state.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu, has reacted to the trending case of rape and gruesome murder of Uwaila Omozuwa, the 100-level student of the University of Benin, UNIBEN.

The IGP made this known in a statement released this afternoon by the force spokesperson, Frank Mba, the police chief vowed to ensure the perpetrators of the dastard act are brought to book.

According to the statement, additional investigation aids and forensic support have been drafted to Edo state to help expedite actions in the ongoing investigation into the unfortunate incident. This will speedily enhance investigation and ensure all perpetrators are brought to book.

The statement reads;

”As part of deliberate and concerted efforts by the Nigeria Police High Command to unravel the circumstances surrounding the brutal attack and unfortunate death of Miss Vera Uwaila Omosuwa in Benin, Edo State on 28th and 30th May, 2020 respectively, the Inspector General of Police has deployed additional investigations aids and forensic support to Edo State Police Command to complement and expedite actions in the ongoing investigations into the unfortunate incident.

The IGP, while condemning the attack, commiserates with the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased. He calls for calm and assures that the Force will surely bring the perpetrators of the callous act to book in the shortest possible time.”

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has recently sent a Freedom of Information, FoI, request to President Muhammadu Buhari requesting its to use his leadership position and the opportunity of the 5th anniversary of his government in office to provide spending details of all loans obtained by the government since May 29, 2015, including details and locations of projects on which the loans have been spent so far.

SERAP is also urging him to set up an independent audit of all loans to resolve any allegations of mismanagement and corruption against his government and to publish spending details of loans obtained by successive administrations since 1999.

Recall President Buhari had last week sought the National Assembly’s approval for fresh external borrowings totaling $5.513 billion to finance deficits in the revised 2020 appropriation bill, critical projects, and support for some states of the federation in their fight against Covid-19.

In the FoI request, dated May 30, 2020, signed by SERAP Deputy Director, Mr. Kolawole Oluwadare, and copied to Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Abukabar Malami; Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, and Director-General of Debt Management Office (DMO), Patience Oniha, the organisation expressed concerns that while governments since 1999 have borrowed money in the name of Nigeria and its citizens, much of the funds have reportedly been mismanaged, stolen or squandered, leaving the citizens with the burden of having to repay these loans.

It said the opacity in the spending of loans would continue to have negative impacts on the fundamental interests of citizens, adding that transparency would ensure that the loans are not diverted to private pockets and increase public trust.

A video that went viral on social media showed the monkey thief in a tree. The attacked lab technician took video with his phone of the incident. After snatching the samples and other medical items, the video shows the monkey clambered up a nearby tree; that video, it also shows the animal gnawing on what look like surgical gloves.

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB has told President Muhammadu Buhari to allow Igbo to call for a peaceful referendum to determine their fate and future in Nigeria.

The IPOB lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, disclosed this on Saturday while speaking with SaharaReporters on the struggle and agitation for Biafra independence.

Ejiofor stated it was obvious that the Eastern region had been relegated to the background and no longer part of Nigeria and the only option left was a peaceful settlement of their grievances through a referendum.

In his words, “They believe that Igbo are not part of the system and the best thing for them to do is for the government to allow Igbo to call for a referendum. It is a process that is constitutionally backed by international conventions and laws.

“We are no longer part and parcel of the system and it is high time thought of home. Let us have our own house with an unbiased process which is what Nnamdi Kanu advocated for.”

He blamed the Nigerian Government for failing to tender an apology that would have helped heal the wounds caused by the Civil War where Igbo were killed in large numbers.

Ejiofor further stated, “Government owes our people apology. The government has not assuaged the feelings of the Igbo in the manner in which they were killed and slaughtered.

“It is a matter of common knowledge that between 1967- 1970 we experienced mass murder (genocide) against Igbo which has continued unabated with the way our people are being treated.”

Ejiofor said the struggle would soon come to fruition now that Nnamdi Kanu had explored all diplomatic contacts to ensure a peaceful actualisation of the project.

He stated that “Biafra will be realised peacefully not violently and he (Nnamdi Kanu) has been matching toward that fact. He is not there for any political purpose. He is only motivated in the cause he believes in.

“It is glaring that we are not part of this system.”

A renowned Professor of Political Science, Prof Tunde Adeniran, who was a former Minister of Education and Ambassador of Nigeria to Germany, has asked the Nigerian Government to facilitate Diaspora voting for Nigerians.

Adeniran, who also worked for the United Nations and retired as a political science lecturer at the University of Ibadan, said Nigeria must look beyond giving excuses and serve as a pacesetter that other African nations look up to.

He made the comments in an interview with SaharaReporters while reacting to the announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission that it would implement electronic voting in major elections starting from 2021.

He said, “I don’t think it is a bad idea, my concern is that they should do thorough homework before they embark on it. I believe that there is so much we should be doing now.

“I believe Nigerians in the Diaspora should be voting by now, nothing should be stopping them from voting so if INEC is seeking the online option now, it is timely and worthwhile. All they need is to do adequate preparation before they launch out, between 2021 and now there is sufficient time to do the necessary preparation.

“Democracy should be something that gives the majority of the people the opportunity to exercise their civic rights and those who are not able to, it should be on the basis of choice and not because they are handicapped by the system in operation.

“If we say that we have to wait till we have an adequate supply of electricity to vote electronically, we may wait endlessly but when we are compelled we need to work with what we have. It is not a luxury, electricity is not a luxury, it is a necessity so the needful has to be done to put that in place.

“With the way this country worked in the ’60s, we shouldn’t be where we are today talking about lack of electricity and so forth. Electricity used to be regular, there were no disruptions that mean so many things have gone wrong.

“We cannot be giving excuses. Are we going to say we should not vote again until we have good roads for people to move around? Are we going to say we will not vote until we do not have some gangsters using violence during elections?

“Get the infrastructures right and do the right thing. We are resourceful enough to lay an example for other African countries. If we are still doubting our capacity to do electronic voting in 2020, then we are not serious. We have to get our acts right and be disciplined as people.”

A black man George Floyd is the victim of brutality this time around in the hands of four Minneapolis Police cops. You might be wondering what he did, right? You probably thought he shot up a school, a church or something. No, you see the likes of Dylan Roof are arrested alive. George Floyd was strangled to death after being accused of forging a signature on a check at a grocery store!

All appeal for to deaf ears. This is a crime that must bother rational minds, it’s high time the government had a special interest in brutality cases amongst policemen.

Recall Ahmaud Aubery was recently shot dead by a white man for mere suspicion while jogging on the roadside.

This cop stayed knees on Floyd George’s neck while he wailed in pain pleading for his life for 6 minutes before he lost consciousness and eventually died of medical distress.

In the words of Martin Luther King Jnr., “you are more devoted to order than to justice,” if any rational minds look away from this heartlessly heinous act.

A recent report, however, has it that all four cops have been dismissed. We believe JUSTICE must be sought, these men must be brought to book, it’s nothing but a murder case.
