The issue of same-sex marriage seems to be one that will linger for as long as humanity exists.

However, Costa Rica is another country expected to become the latest to legalize same-sex marriage, Tuesday, when a ruling from its supreme court goes into effect ending the country’s ban.

Recall Ecuador announced it legalisation last year. It is also permitted in some parts of Mexico. Costa Rica now becomes the sixth country in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage.

Some couples have already scheduled ceremonies — mostly private due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but some that would be broadcast — to celebrate their unions before judges and notaries after the ban was lifted at midnight.

The issue took center stage in Costa Rica’s 2018 presidential election after the Inter-American Court of Human Rights earlier that year issued an opinion that countries like Costa Rica, which had signed the American Convention on Human Rights, had to move immediately to legalize gay marriage.

It helped propel President Carlos Alvarado to victory over an evangelical candidate, Fabricio Alvarado, who had campaigned against it.

In August 2018, Costa Rica’s supreme court said the country’s ban was unconstitutional and gave the congress 18 months to correct it or it would happen automatically. The Legislative Assembly did not act, so at midnight the law banning same-sex marriage was nullified.

A campaign celebrating the achievement called “I do” planned a series of events including hours of coverage on state television and messages from celebrities, including Michelle Bachelet, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Gia Miranda, director of the “I do” campaign, said coverage would also include historical chapters of the movement in Costa Rica.

“It gives us so much joy,” Miranda said. “The only thing that could win with this is Costa Rica and in general love.” She said it would help decrease discrimination and make the country more prosperous and attractive to tourists. B

A three-storey building located at No. 6 Olonode Street, Ebute Metta in Lagos State, yesterday, partially collapsed without any casualties or any injuries recorded from the incident.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA) Response team led by the Director-General/CEO, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, arrived at the scene of the incident and discovered that the building was old and distressed and that the reinforcement of the building were corroded, resulting in visible cracks on the walls and pillars due to lack of maintenance.

Occupants of the three-storey building were evacuated and the entire building cordoned off to prevent any secondary incident.

Further investigations and integrity tests were carried out by LASEMA and LASBCA and the building was revealed to be completely compromised.

The owner of the recently demolished hotel by the Rivers state government, Needam Gogorobari has raised an alarm over threat to the life of his employee, Dr. Bariledum Azoroh who manages the hotel.

Bariledum Azoroh was placed under a compulsory quarantine as ordered by a state Magistrate court for flouting the government directive.

Recall earlier this month governor Nyesome Wike ordered the demolition of Prodest Hotel for violating the lockdown guidelines.

In a statement made available to The Updates, Gogorobari claimed there is a sinister attempt by the government to declare his employee coronavirus positive to justify their “heinous crime.”

He said, “I have it on good authority, based on intelligent report reaching me today (24th May 2020) that the manager of Prodest Hotel in Eleme, Dr. Bariledum Job Azoroh, who a prisoner of the Rivers State Government has been framed up by an unorthodox hired medical officers recruited by Governor Wike with a report that he has tested positive to COVID-19 whilst in detention with the Rivers State Government.

“The illegal detention facility is in Stadium, Elekahia, Port Harcourt and the Federal Government have since kicked against all forms of illegal detention in Rivers State. The administration of Governor Wike has no regard for the rule of law and feelings for the poor masses.

“You will further recall that the manager was held by Governor Wike and kept in this gangster stadium facility and surreptitiously tried and convicted last week with a fine of N50,000 and to be isolated for 14 days. This is the worst abuse to citizen’s human rights under the Quarantine Act.

“The Rivers State Government and Governor of Rivers State must be held liable for infecting my manager, who is in their custody for over 15 days, with COVID-19. He was a very healthy person before his arrest. It is, therefore, medically impossible that the infection occurred before his detention. “

“It is a known fact that I and the Rivers State Government are at daggers drawn over the demolition of my hotel. It is a bestial act for the same government to convict my manager and now infect him with the novel Coronavirus. It is also known that the objective of the Governor is to kill my manager and his lawyer by conducting some unorthodox medical tracing to the lawyer.

“President Muhammadu Buhari should step in now to stop the rage of the Governor of Rivers State. He should submit Dr Bariledum Job Azoroh to NCDC in Abuja and stop all further acts in this matter. All concerned are by this advice to go into hiding until the President steps in. This situation requires the full implementation of a state of emergency in Rivers State.”

An Indian woman in Sharjah, who recently recovered from coronavirus delivered a healthy baby boy in Ajman’s Thumbay University Hospital on her birthday on May 21.

The Sharjah woman, 32, tested positive for coronavirus days after her husband Sunny was diagnosed with coronavirus.

The Upadates was reliably informed of the plight of the couple last month after they were quarantined in different hotels in Sharjah at the same time.

Right now, they have both recovered from the virus. Sanam, Sunday, from the hospital bed said, “I am relieved. Of late we were so stressed that I couldn’t even get a pregnancy gender test to determine the sex of the child. So there was an element of surprise too.” “I am anaemic and since I also suffered from coronavirus, the risk factors were quite high. The doctors said I won’t be able to endure labour pains so they went for a cesarean delivery. It was slated for May 22 but was rescheduled to an earlier day. By sheer coincidence, it happened to be my birthday,” she added.

Sunny said they went through agonising times in recent weeks. “Now all of that seems a distant memory, the surgery was complicated and lasted more than three hours. Thankfully everything went well,” said the businessman who runs a foodstuff company in the UAE.

A resident of Sharjah’s Al Taawun neighbourhood, Sunny said he first suspected he had been infected when he developed high fever and body ache on March 21.

“I feared passing the infection to my six-year-old son and Sanam who was in her third semester of pregnancy so I immediately isolated myself,” he recalled.

“The alarm bells rang when Sanam also got fever followed by a cough. By now, my condition had also worsened so I got myself tested at a health facility in Al Mizhar. Their lab report confirmed my worst fears – I had coronavirus,” he added. Sunny said he was asked to report to the Preventive Medicine Centre in Sharjah and was then taken to a hotel in an ambulance for quarantine.

“A few days later my wife was quarantined in another hotel a few kilometres away from my own. We used to speak on the phone and try to motivate each other as Sanam waited for her COVID-19 test reports. I got extremely worried when her results came out positive but we remained hopeful and overcame the disease,” he said. “We can’t wait to go home with our little bundle of joy,” he added.

The Japanese tennis star, Naomi Osaka is now the highest-paid female athlete in history. The 22-year-old two-time grand slam winner amassed her staggering pre-tax total through a combination of prize money and endorsements, raking in $1.4 million more than Williams over the last 12 months.

Serena Williams, a 23-time grand slam champion, has been the highest-paid female athlete for the last four years – earning between $18 million to $29 million.

I'm a very ambitious person, with extremely big dreams, my boyfriend is also hard-working, but I'm not seeing any future at all with his career/prospects/life. When I say I'm with big dreams, it means I'm working on discovering (new innovations), planning big business that would compete with top brands, etc. I'm that big in dreams.

My children is also very important to me, I don't plan for their sufferings at all.

Since day 1, I do tell him to do this and that. I really hate company works, so I would tell him to have savings, and be building something sideways where he works. Also, I wanted him to do Masters, since he said he would love to travel out, he's always saying he hates Nigeria bla bla bla. His dad also wanted him to do Masters, but he's in the crew of Masters is a waste of time, and he can't do Masters in Nigeria bla bla bla

Baby try this business, he would say he doesn't have money, he needs 2 million to start a business etc.

Meanwhile, he doesn't have money to travel out of the country to do Masters, nor 2m to start any business. So I would tell him to manage what he has first, and that would propelled him later, but he likes to talk like illiterates that Masters is meaningless.

Meanwhile, while that is true, those things are just like investment, you don't know when you will see an opportunity to use your Masters certificate, and since he studied computer science, I told him that it can even help him get a job outside Nigeria when he leaves, that it can be useful there. I understand the situation of the country, but not having masters doesn't mean you will get a job as well, so why don't you just have it.

My bf would shut me off, and also his dad, the dad even asked him to take job at the federal university where he works, but my bf said he can't work in that place, this is a federal government job o, he would say the salary is too small and people there already knows him, because his dad is in a big office in the university.

So it won't seem like I'm disturbing him, I went quiet, but might chip it in in discussions, but I don't fight him on those things. He works in a small company, and he rose to the position of a Manager, he spent all his time in office, the little time to waste with his friends. It's a good thing but I'm not comfortable with that, the pay is about 90k, which is not enough for his expenses, also he's the first born.

Fast forward to last year, his dad died, it looks like a film trick to him, he now have to take care of his siblings and mum (mum is nurse, but retired long time ago, her pay is little because it wasn't normal retirement). Everything I was telling him finally came to pass.

He rented an apartment with His friends, he later hated it, and said he wants his own, he went to rent an apartment of 600k (he gathered it from different places and he borrowed), which I really hate and we fought on that as well. Because he could have used the money to secure his life in a better way, since his complain when I told him to start a business is that he doesn't have money bla bla bla

He will not apply for better jobs as well
He's practically doing nothing to grow, and would say he hates Nigeria and he would like to leave, but he can't even apply for scholarships or even google schools.

So this 2020, Jan 1, I started fighting him, that I'm not going to continue with him like that, that he should go apply for MSC, start a business or just do something. He now started saying that he has responsibilities which are his siblings, I told him this is the nonsense, he would do till the year ends, we will fight and later resolve it.

He won't even talk about it, or get reminded, he makes me feel Hus boss is using him. I have told him several times how he would be used and dumped, in fact, he makes me say negatives sometimes, and that's because I have seen people that get dumped while working with companies and they fall back to grass, my mum won't even accept him because he works in a company, small company, not cocacola or big companies. My mum hates company works like shits because we've heard and seen people falling to zero due to company jobs.

The problem
1. He says I'm disturbing his life, and not allowing him to rest

2. I'm not happy with him living that way, with no future, no investment, hes not building himself while working, hes not doing courses, not learning any skills, and I think its too risky.
His current salary is not enough for him, not to talk of me collecting part of it. But he gives me money though, has not been more than 1k, 2k and data subscription which I really appreciate.

3. I can't introduce him to my family because I want him respected. Truth is I don't know what he would say to impress my parents because I'm not even impressed with him. And I want him to be superloved and respected. I believe in first impression would last very long. He has introduced me to his family and all friends

4. He never ask me about my own life, aspirations, advice me etc, I'm always the one to do that. Yesterday he had the gut to tell me I'm not caring because of just two days of not showing care

5. Corona has turned his company outside down and he's highly affected. Just like all what I was telling him finally happened, and he has nothing to fall back at. He has a car,

6. I can't marry him or anyone this way, and I'm getting old, though and I want marriage next year. He said he wants too, but I can't marry him like this. According to a study by researchers from Colombia University, and two affiliated NewYork-Presbyterian Hospitals in Manhattan reviewed electronic medical records and lab and radiographic findings of COVID-19 patients in respiratory failure, 257 (22%) of 1, 150 coronavirus adult patients hospitalized in the New York from March 2 through April 1, 2020, were critically ill and 101 (39%) of them died.

This study, yesterday, published in The Lancet shows the most common symptoms of the 257 patients included shortness of breath, fever, cough, muscle pain, and diarrhea. Median time from symptom onset to hospitalization was 5 days; black, Hispanic, and Latino patients sought care later in their illness than white patients. Ninety-four (37%) of the patients were still hospitalized as of Apr 28. The median observation period after hospitalization was 19 days. 

Fifty-nine (62%) were Hispanic or Latino, and 13 (5%) were healthcare personnel. Of the total number, 82% had one or more underlying illness, the most common of which were high blood pressure 162 (63%) and diabetes 92 (36%); 119 (46%) were obese, including 39 (71%) of 55 patients younger than 50 years.

Of the 257 patients, 203 patients (79%) required mechanical ventilation for a median of 18 days, 170 (66%) received vasopressors for low blood pressure, and 79 (31%) needed dialysis. 

The median time to clinical deterioration after hospitalization was 3 days. Using the multivariable Cox model, the authors determined that advanced age, chronic heart disease, chronic lung disease, and elevated levels of inflammatory marker interleukin-6 (IL-6) and the blood clot indicator D-dimer were independently associated with in-hospital death.

The median age was 62 years, and 171 of 257 (67%) were men.

The vast majority of patients (229 of 257 [89%] received antibiotics, and 208 (81%) were prescribed antiviral drugs: 185 (72%) were given hydroxychloroquine, and 23 (9%) received remdesivir. Sixty-eight (26%) patients received corticosteroids, and 44 (17%) were given IL-6 receptor antagonists for inflammation.

A Derby-based engine maker company, Rolls-Royce, Wednesday, said it plans to cut some 9,000 jobs globally as it grapples with the collapse in air travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company boasts of 52,000 employees and didn’t clearly state which region of the country would be the worst hit. The company CEO Warren East said most of the cuts will take place in the civil aerospace business, where two-thirds of U.K. employees work. Meanwhile, negotiations are almost set to begin with unions.

He further said, “being told that there is no longer a job for you is a terrible prospect and it is especially hard when all of us take so much pride in working for Rolls-Royce.’’ “But we must make difficult decisions to see our business through these unprecedented times.”

“This is not a crisis of our making. But it is the crisis that we face and we must deal with it,’’ East said. “Our airline customers and air-frame partners are having to adapt and so must we.’’

However, the company immediately came under criticism, since it has furloughed some 4,000 workers under a government program to pay some of the wages of people affected by the crisis. The unions insisted taxpayers deserved a more responsible approach to a national emergency.

Marcus Garvey was an inspiration to many; however, he encountered many difficulties in trying to implement his plan of returning Africans to Africa. He was not only fought against by colonialists, but he was fought against by African-Americans. His speech given at Madison Square Garden, regarding Africa for Africans, Egypt for the Egyptians, Asia for the Asians, and Ireland for the Irish was very emotional and soul-stirring to many of African descent.

Marcus Garvey’s plea had a message of liberty for Africans. His message highlighted the point that all men should be free to work for their own salvation. Since other nations were working to achieve theirs, Africans should be allowed to do the same, and they should be given the latitude to create their own cultural heritage. His appeal was to the white world to yield unto Africans a place where they would be able to develop their national freedom; that place being Africa.

His plea was not for Africans to take America from non-Africans, but for those who were not of African descent to return Africa to Africans, and to allow the scattered and abused children of Africa the blessings of returning to their homeland in Africa. He did not believe in any one race having a monopoly on the world since it would be impossible for such a race to govern others and itself.

Garvey felt that no Blackman was good enough to govern whites, and as a result, no white person good enough to govern Blacks. He espoused that the Blackman should have liberty from white oppression. He expressed the thought that other civilizations have failed when they tried to rule others that were not of their own nation. As a result, each should govern its own people and in righteousness, everyone should live and let others live in peace.

He expressed the thought that no one had an exclusives right to rule others and that each nation should be equal to the next. He requested that whites should help the Africans return to Africa. He articulated the fact that America has helped the Jews, Poles, Russians, Germans, and Armenians, and should also help Africans return to Africa, thus making Africa for Africans.

The Myanmar police, Monday, made seizures of nearly 200 million methamphetamine tablets, more than 500 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, and 35.5 metric tons and 163,000 thousand liters of precursor chemicals used to manufacture illicit drugs, Myanmar authorities and the UNODC said in a joint statement to The Updates.

The regional coordinator for the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, UNODC, Jeremy Douglas, said the scale of the seizure was “truly off-the-charts.”

This is a result of a three-month operation that centered around Lwe Kham village in Kutkhai Township in Myanmar’s northeast Shan state, thirty-three suspects were, however, arrested.

They also seized nearly 3,750 liters (990 gallons) of liquid methylfentanyl, which is used to make a powerful synthetic opioid like fentanyl. It is believed to be the first time authorities have discovered such a massive amount of fentanyl or one of its analogues in Southeast Asia.

The region has so far been spared an opioid crisis like that in the United States, but experts have warned that drug producers in Asia may eventually chose to supply those who use opiate drugs like heroin with synthetic opioids, which are made to mimic the chemical structure of poppy-based drugs. Their potency means it is easier to overdose on synthetic opiods, especially if drug users do not know what they’re consuming. A trio of overdoses in Bangkok in September were believed to be the first indications that fentanyl had shown up in the Thai capital’s heroin supply. One of the users who witnessed the overdose admitted to The Updates the group thought they were taking heroin, not fentanyl.

Douglas said that the amount of methylfentanyl precursor seized could have been used to produce a batch of synthetic opioids large enough to replace the region’s heroin production for a year.

“This may be the moment we have feared – synthetic opioids are in the region in a big way,” he said. Asia’s methamphetamine boom is one of the world’s biggest drug crises. It’s being fueled by major criminal syndicates who in recent years moved away from plant-based drugs like heroin – which need space and are dependent on weather – to cheaper and easy-to-make synthetics like methamphetamine.

They’ve also been able to operate with relatively little interference from police by moving production into the Golden Triangle, the border area where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. The Golden Triangle was for years the world’s biggest heroin-producing region, and today it is still notorious for its lawlessness — especially on the Myanmar side, which is in some parts governed by local militias and warlords.

The result has been an unprecedented boom in the synthetic drug trade. The methamphetamine market in East and Southeast Asia alone is worth as much as $61.4 billion a year, the UNODC said in a report released Friday.

The market is so strong that even the novel coronavirus outbreak appears to have done little to impact synthetic drug production and trade.

Residents of Sharjah and by extension Dubai can now have COVID-19 nasal swab tests done in the comfort of their own home after an initiative was launched last week for the first time in the UAE by Avivo health group.

Dr. Atul Aundhekar, CEO of the group said, “We offer the Reverse Transcriptase Polyemrase Chain Reaction (rTPCR) test at home. This COVID-19 test is the gold standard diagnostic tool for coronavirus. We have a home car division and are licenced to send health care workers home on call. Many people are scared to venture out, including the elderly, those with children and determined people, for them it could be cumbersome to drive to a test center.”

Charges are Dh400 per person and if there are large group bookings, say to workers accommodation or workplaces, discounts are offered.

The United Arab Emirates, UAE, has sent aid planes to Sierra Leone, Niger and Mali on Sunday to boost their efforts to fight against the spread of coronavirus.

Seven metric tonnes of aids were sent to Sierra Leona to help 7,000 medical professionals, while a further six metric tonnes were sent to both Niger and Mali each, to help 6,000 medical professionals in both countries.

Omar Al Meheiri, Charge d’Affaires of the UAE Embassy in Senegal, said, “The UAE is committed to assisting its partners throughout Africa in their relentless fight against COVID-19. Today’s provision of aid will boost medical professionals’ ability to combat this virus with the necessary protection and equipment to ensure their safety.”

The Lagos State House of Assembly has challenged His Excellency Babajide Sanwo-Olu to account for expenses incurred from donations received in the fight against coronavirus.

At the plenary presided over by Assembly Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the House asked Sanwo-Olu to introduce a co-chairman from the executive arm to represent the state’s COVID-19 Incident Commander before the parliament.

“We must do what is right. The law says the executive will come forward to give account on what they have expended,” Obasa said.

A whooping sum of N4.3bn stashed in a ‘secret’ Zenith Bank account belonging to the Ondo State Government has been uncovered in Ondo state.

In a finding by Sahara Reporters, the money is said to have been kept in the account for over 10 years, generating interest until it was uncovered during auditing of the state accounts recently.

It was gathered that the bank account was active during the administration of a former governor, Olusegun Mimiko.

However, details of transactions carried out on the Ondo Government Account remained sketchy at the time of this report.

In an exclusive chat with a lawmaker in the state, the discovery of the account is true, noting that the fund in it was lodged without due process, thereby raising some suspicions of corruption by some government officials.

The lawmaker disclosed that the money was discovered through the efforts of the Commissioner for Finance in the state, Mr. Wale Akinterinwa.

He said, “We have learnt that the money had been kept in that account for over 10 years and was recently discovered due to auditing carried out on bank accounts belonging to the government.

“The most suspicious of it all was that this particular money was lodged in the bank account without following due process.

“And of particular interest to us is about the authorisation of this account or who and who are the signatories to it.

“We all want to know when the account was opened and what has also been the interest rate accurable to government since then.”
