This #3 billion can be used to train the unemployed youths in the state, one field or the other, and at the end of the day give them money to start a business of their own. The All Progressives Congress (APC), Lagos chapter has warned Chief Bode George that the president will not probe former governors of the state according to his (George’s) wish. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in the state had in an earlier report, asked president Muhammadu Buhari to probe the immediate past administration of Babatunde Fashola and that of his predecessor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In a statement issued by Joe Igbokwe, the APC’s publicity secretary on Thursday, the party blasted Bode George, asking him to steer away from politics after his defeat at the last general election. Chief Bode George wants the Nigerian president to probe some past governors of Lagos state. Premium Times reports further that the party Bode George and the Lagos PDP, stating specifically that they had just woken up from a “chronic hallucination” after their defeat by the APC. The statement read in part: “Bode George is yet to come to terms that it is all over for PDP in Nigeria and Lagos. He is yet to believe that Lagos APC has forcefully retired him from active politics for ever in Nigeria and Lagos State. “Why is Bode George finding it difficult to believe that the game is over for him in Nigeria politics talk less of Lagos State? “Who will tell Bode George that nobody takes him serious again in matters of Nigerian politics? Who will persuade Chief Bode George to quit politics now in his own interest?” “What is giving Bode George the courage to believe that President Buhari will probe Asiwaju BAT (Bola Ahmed Tinubu) and Fashola, who are the real drivers of change in Nigeria because a Bode George said so?” Mr. Igbokwe asked. “How can a jail bird who plundered and looted NPA, and who just got pardoned the other day because of 2015 elections forget easily that he is part of the problem of Nigeria and not part of the solution? My mind was made up on this week’s topic last Wednesday when the Senate decided to go on another vacation, the third since inauguration, till September 29, having rejected a pay- cut and setting up a 13-member ad hoc committee to probe the power sector under former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan. Too often we focus on the executive without beaming our searchlight on the legislators who, if things continue the way they are, are nothing but parasites on the country’s increasingly scarce financial resources. The Nation revealed that nearly N13 billion may have been spent on maintaining our senators and representatives just for two months even when our senators have sat for a mere 11 days since their inauguration on June 9. The exact amount spent on maintaining 109 senators and 360 representatives was N12.967 billion with each senator collecting N36.4 million and each representative pocketing N25 million, I’m not sure even drug traffickers make as much as our federal legislators have earned in just two months. Last Wednesday, the Senate rejected a suggestion by its Finance committee to cut senators’ salaries and allowances. Their argument was that other beneficiaries of the N120 billion National Assembly budget must accept a cut too in their salaries. Of course, this was at an executive session, a euphemism in the Nigerian context whenever they want to talk about money due to them. A newspaper reported that the senators rejected the recommendations because they were not practicable. Excuse me, what is not practicable in cutting down emoluments in a country where millions are wallowing in acute poverty? What is so difficult in following the example of the president and vice president who slashed their take- home by 50%? Some of us criticized President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo of tokenism by slashing their salaries, but why can’t our legislators follow suit with such tokenism? It is the height of insincerity and clownishness by suggesting that civil servants working at the National Assembly must be consulted before cutting the budget. Pray, has any Nigerian complained about the salaries of civil servants? Are they the ones sucking Nigerians like leeches without a corresponding productivity? By the way, the last two months of both chambers did not witness any innovative lawmaking or groundbreaking bills that will advance Nigeria except the usual resolutions and probe panels. A smarter senate would have taken into cognizance a similar probe organised by the House of Representatives some years back on the power sector and actually asked for that report before settling for another probe which report most likely might not see the light of the day. Further, if our legislators are not fighting each other over who will lead them with some forging the rules used in such elections, another leader will hire a helicopter with millions of naira to go and open a sanctuary. These and other sundry duties like accompanying someone accused of fraud to the EFCC are also what occupy their time in the past eight weeks, yet they pocketed millions of naira for doing practically nothing. It is now clear that possibly the gentleman paid for the helicopter from his pocket having collected N25 million for eight weeks worth of work, if we can call it that. Have you also noticed that they are united in swindling Nigerians? Party affiliations are jettisoned whenever our commonwealth is involved with no discernible difference between the political parties. Lest I forget, where is our dear Senator Ben Murray-Bruce who promised us a copy of his pay slip? Will his constituents, the people of Bayelsa East, remind him of his promise? So why keeping such luxury at a period oil price is dropping regularly and how long are we going to support such inanity? A group of Nigerians some weeks back started a campaign asking for greater openness of the National Assembly demanding that the opacity, which is the main feature of the way and manner 469 people conduct their affairs be removed. It will be to our advantage joining this crusade as too often we have been taken for a ride. We are tired of the well-worn excuse that we stigmatize legislators forgetting the rot of the executives, as all eyes are on the legislators presently. It was the Senegalese who felt they don’t need two chambers and thereby scrapped their senate in September 2012, it is high time we followed suit. Going by the remuneration approved for them by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) formula, the annual take-home (excluding estacode, Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) and some sundry allowances which they are paid as necessary), of each of the 360 members of the House of Representatives is estimated at N18.26 million.
Each of the 109 senators earn a bit higher, pocketing N19.66 million each a year, PREMIUM TIMES analysis shows.
Additionally, each senator collects N1.01 million for his domestic staff, while each member of the House of Representatives collects N1million. Apart from this, each senator gets N202, 640 as Newspapers/Periodicals allowance.
Based on the approved pay schedule, N1.4billion is spent on the lawmakers as furniture allowance annually, while their car loan stands at N2.34billion.

With these figures, the 360 members of the House of Representatives gulp N6.58 billion from the nation’s treasury as total allowances and salaries, while the 109 Senators will cost the nation N2.14 billion.
Together, the National Assembly will cost the country a total sum of N8.72 billion as allowances and salaries.
However, the amount the Senators and Members of the House of Representatives remit as tax appears insignificant as it’s being charged on their basic salaries alone. The allowances are about 870 percent and 820 percent of their respective basic salaries.
PREMIUM TIMES analysis of the lawmakers’ pay did however not include the illegal but hefty quarterly allowances lawmakers pay themselves – they call it office running cost.

It is unclear how much it is now. In 2009, it was N192million per senator per quarter while their House of Representatives counterparts received N140 million. Insiders say the “allowances” have increased dramatically over time.
In the twilight of the Seventh Assembly, the clamour by Nigerian civil society organizations only forced the legislators to knock off N20billion from their budgetary allocation, thus making them cut the habitual N150 billion to N130 billion.
First-term senator, Ben Murray-Bruce’s call for reduction in allowances of members of the National Assembly received widespread commendation.

A number of lawmakers followed suit, giving support to Mr. Murray-Bruce’s populist proposal.
Although the Seventh Assembly made the N20 billion cut as part of their austerity measure, the N7.8 billion they will cumulatively earn is almost the sum total of 2015 capital allocation to Power Sector (N4.24billion) Ministry of Women Affairs (N1.25billion), the Federal Ministry of Communication Technology (N500million), Federal Ministry of Justice and the National Human Rights Commission (N500million), the Ministry of Science and Technology (N500million), the Petroleum Resources (N500million)the Ministry of Labour and Productivity (N200million) and Ministry of Police Affairs (N150million).
