Hello, been forever! How are you? Does the email selfstudy contains the latest GRE materials? Looking for materials for my little bro. Thanks! DanjaNinja: 2021 UPDATE It's been 6 years since i wrote this post and i still can't believe how this post has transformed into an amazing community of people working collaboratively to pass this exam. That said, i believe the materials and guidelines listed in the original post are currently inadequate. While it's been years since i wrote the GRE, there are two key information that are timeless.
1. The only resource you need is the Official GRE prep book. It's an excellent resource written by the creators of the exam. Who best to learn from than those who created the exam? Ignore every other book and just get the Official GRE guide.
2. The official GRE practice tests are extremely valuable. Powerprep online and Powerprep plus online are all you need. They are the closest substitute to the real exam. Before taking the test, i beg you, please do at least one Powerprep Practice test. I would strongly suggest you do the Powerprep plus online test. Yes, its a paid service but trust me, it's worth every penny. Please note, I failed to do this and it was evident in my scores.
Once you get these resources (the book and the practice test), the rest is up to you. Create a study plan and then study as much as you can. As you study, please try as much as you can to do the exercises in the books. Your learning is complete when you can answer questions related to that concept flawlessly. If you can’t solve problems, brotherly…sisterly…your learning is incomplete. Kindly go back and relearn the material.
Finally, after studying, do the Powerprep online or Powerprep plus tests. It might take you weeks or months to study and write the exams. It doesn't matter. Do what works for you with an eye on the college admission cycle. At this point, you are most likely prepared for the main exam. Go forth and slay your test with grace.
I know the process may not be as linear as stated above. You would have days where you have no desire to study. Sometimes, you might even feel lonely. This is entirely normal. To keep going, surround yourself with like minded achievers - they are many amazing people on this forum who you can connect with. Additionally, pay attention to your health, sleep and diet. The brain works superbly when you are well fed, sleep well and have a stable emotional life.
Before i leave, i just want you all to know that life is a beautiful journey. Stay focused and keep working on your dreams. One day you would wake up and discover you are living your dreams. It has been that way for me. I started with the believe that i would study and live in the US. Today, i am living that dream.
Stay blessed. Danja. |

Hello all, I have come on this thread to look for GRE materials for my little brother and any help with the latest materials will be appreciated. Last time I wrote was in 2010 and I have definitely lost all the materials plus that’s now obsolete. Any help rendered will surely be appreciated! |

Guys, I saw a news today saying that us visa applicants rejected on or after Jan 2020 are being considered to come back for another interview without paying for a new fee/filling new form. Don’t know how true this is...any thoughts? My In-laws fall in this category and I want to apply for them again. |

Nahum777: You mean people from your school? I contacted the school and they said they don't know the legality of helping me with tips as regards the interview. They gave me an email to contact, but I didn't contact the person. Maybe I should send that person a message immediately. Yup, some schools help...it’s mostly the ISS office (international office)...some don’t...some will even be the one to reach out for a mock...I think you should contact the person too...mock is mock...if you scroll to old thread here, u will find thousands of questions which is same they will (ISS) will discuss with u. |

pcb2bad: Pls guys I need ur advice. On Wednesday 20 th June, my visa was denied and I was given a blue paper. Pls bear it in mind that I’ve been to the us twice on b2 visa and I still have a valid b2 visa. I wana know if maybe there’s a problem. I was admitted to study nursing at pv Amu university in Texas. But not for masters another undergrad as I finished my previous undergrad last year and decided to change to another course . When asked what other schools I applied to I mentioned a community college. Pls is there a restriction for people that want to do another undergrad . During my interview , I was very nervous and I didn’t write any standard test and when I was asked what will the degree do for me. I messed up the answer as I wasn’t able to complete my sentence . Pls help me .. should I reapply for another interview? So so sorry about that...community college (to the best of my knowledge) are red flags...sounds like you don’t even know what you doing because community college is like Naija technical schools...another thing, PREPARE for your interview like I mean PREPARE. Write your answer to every kinda question, practice in front of a mirror, record on your phone your answers and listen to them over and over. I know that facing someone who is about to judge you can be nerve racking and that’s why you prepare because even when you fumbling, the resounds (of d records replayed over and over) will kinda by default come to you and you can recover from mistakes during the interview. Take your time, prep well and try again...don’t give up, you can do it!!! |

Danielaz5: If I'm going for a second interview can my answers in the first interview be recalled and used to question me on why I said it before and changed Good question...your record is already existing in the security (with all your former answers)...you may change it with some good backing up reasons and even you can say something like “oh I know that I previously said blah blah but my current situation makes blah blah impossible because....(JUST DONT LIE) and be confident. You gat this! Good luck |

ponpon: Don’t play yourself I don’t want to quote. Get a better Gre score if you can. All those advisor bants for PhD doesn’t cover Naija Sometimes it does...actually know a couple of people it worked for...didn’t work for me too but I am sure sometimes it works from Naija...you even get a Skype interview...that score is not a bad score (my lame thoughts) |

FA13: Good day everyone. I need sincere advice from people with more experience here.
I applied for PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Mechatronics option) at up to five (5) different schools for this Fall 2018 in US. However none granted me admission except one with no funding. I declined the offer.
I have a first class degree in Mechanical Engineering. My GRE score is Verbal-151 Quantitative-160. Total 311. My SOP should be ok in comparison to others.
The only shortcoming of my application that i know of is that most were submitted on the deadline dates due to some challenges I faced then. Could only this be the reason for not getting funding?
Also other factor that might have affected me is that most of them were top schools including: University of Southern California, University of Michigan Ann-Arbor and Texas A & M College Station.
I need your advice as I am planning to apply for Fall 2019. Also which likely schools have higher probability of admission and funding?
Thanks in advance. Life is first come first serve, so is PhD programs. If I have $10 to share for 5 people and I have 10 applicants for this fund, I will stream using different tactics. #1. Is definitely qualifications as they roll in. You CANT submit application on deadline date and expect anything positive (that’s a gamble)...except in schools that they still have funding left...which is possible but “how would you know which schools?” Turn in applications “if possible on the first day they get opened” (I’m exaggerating so you can see my point)...also, apply to MANY schools...and of course, ask God for guardians. BTW, your GRE score isn’t the problem. Don’t think you should write another one at all. I know so MANY PEOPLE (engineering) with lower GRE scores than yours... and yes did PhD or about to round up the program or still on it. It isn’t the score...Your SOP, maybe it needs editing I don’t know...I am 100% sure it isn’t your GRE... I’m back |

sometimes it does. If you have 75 %, I am pretty sure it will, even 50 % does. But basically, convincing the V.O. that you are who you are, and that you can be independent if you have funding or not is the main thing. Goodluck! Chapecoense: Please, does having some form of scholarship(not full) increases one's chances at the embassy? |

ChemEngr01: At first I wasn't sure whether to post this or not, but after reading that some people on the thread are thinking of rewriting I decided to share my experience so they can gain from it. Anybody that read my first post would know I wasn't satisfied with my quant score, so I decided to rewrite. I knew I didn't need that much further preparation, so I chose the earliest possible date after the 21-day rule. I finally wrote it again yesterday, about 25 days after the first. I had Q167 V158. The key to having truly great scores in the quant is practise questions! Throughout my second preparation I never opened any textbook, because I knew I already had the basic knowledge. I started with magoosh videos; I only watched about 150 of them before my first test, so I watched the rest. Then I subscribed to high speed internet and practised tirelessly with online resources. The good thing about online resources is, after seeing your scores you can review and get detailed explanation on all questions(including the ones you get right - you might learn a better/shorter way). I started with kaomanfen.com. The questions here aren't too tough, so by the time you solve 10-15 full lenghts, you should be having scores close to 170. (I skipped the AW and verbal sections of the full lenghts.) Then I went to Kaplan's site. They give you access to one full lenght for free, but you can access the other 6 full lenghts with the passcode "response". The six tests were extremely helpful. I had 162 in the first test, but after reviewing answers to all questions, I saw gradual increase in subsequent tests. By the time I got to the sixth full lenght, I had 170! I also did princeton review's online practise questions and a few other random ones. For those preparing, you don't have to read ALL the textbooks that have been mentioned; stick to one or two and read it from start to finish(I used Nova in my own case). Then watch all the magoosh videos and then do a lot of practise questions. All the best! Hi, could you pls send me the online materials u used? I have no idea what recent gre is about. I need this for my cousin. I will pm u pls |

EmanA1928: Good morning. I do have a couple of questions as it relates to the GRE. I am a PhD hopeful and have taken the GRE. I scored 312(155V and 157Q) and I'm going for the pharmaceutical sciences. My IELTS score is 7.5 (some schools do accept it in lieu of the TOEFL) I'm just wondering if thats a good score and how competitive that makes me. My undergraduate GPA was 4.72/5.0 and i had a distinction in my Masters. try the univ of Kansas, they have very good school of pharmacy and I believe with your credentials, u r good to go. Don't even let anyone tell you otherwise. Try both top schools and average schools |

LagosNIV: I would also stress that what you really wouldn't want to happen is get randomly selected for an interview or have some kind of problem with your application. How would you get out of the US to come retrieve your passport that you sent to Nigeria (illegally)? Thanks! I have a question on the drop box visa renewal thingy. Does one have to travel home to do it or you may just pay online gtb send the passport to Nigeria with other required documents via DHL? a friend did his recently but was home for the break and just sent it from home. Do I have to fill ds-160? if yes, the part that says intended date of arrival, what should one fill? any info wud be useful, thanks |
