Crime20-Year-Old UNILAG Student Dies At Nigerian Defence Academy, Family Kicks by wakabobo(op): 6:01am On Sep 08, 2018
The family members of Damilare Taiwo, an Economics student at the University of Lagos, Akoka, have been thrown into mourning following his death a day after he resumed for training at the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna State.

The army authorities reportedly said the 20-year-old slumped and died during a training session last Tuesday.

But the family told Saturday PUNCH that the circumstances surrounding Damilare’s death aroused suspicion, claiming that he was beaten to death.

A brilliant student with a CGPA said to be in the range of Second Class Upper Division, the native of Ile-Ife, Osun State had always wished to be an accomplished army officer.

He had applied for the Regular Combatant Course of the NDA in 2015 at 17, but did not make the list of the successful candidates. Undeterred by hard luck, promising Damilare reapplied for the programme a few months ago.

He was shortlisted on August 8, 2018 among the 10 selected candidates from Osun State for the 70 Regular Combatant Course, coincidentally at a time when he was rounding off his first degree project.

On Saturday, August 25, his father saw him off to Ikorodu Garage – some distance from their residence – beaming with joy that the first child of the family was about to embark on a journey to attain enviable ranks in the profession he had been nursing for years.

“He left Lagos for Kaduna that Saturday, a day after he concluded his project in school, and reported at the training camp on Monday, August 27,” the deceased’s father, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, told our correspondent.

Narrating Damilare’s journey through life, Oyedele said his death came to the family as a rude shock.

The father recalled, “He finished his secondary school education in 2014 and gained admission to UNILAG the same year to study Economics. He was just 20 years old. He just completed his project.

“When he wanted to leave for Kaduna that Saturday, I advised him to be a good ambassador of the family and prayed for him. He was an easy-going child. He had always wanted to be a soldier.

“In one of his pictures on Facebook, he edited the image of the late Gen. Murtala Muhammed in the N20 note and replaced it with his picture. That is to tell you the passion he had for the Force and how far he wanted to go.

“He had been showing interest in the army since 2011 when he was 13. It is so unfortunate that he could not accomplish his mission.

“The army sent some officers to us last Thursday to tell us about his death. They told us that he collapsed during a training session on Tuesday (August 28).”

Oyedele, a building material dealer, described his son’s death as devastating to the family, lamenting that they had invested so much hope in him. For years, the businessman would battle to get over the heartache of the irreparable loss.

A devout Christian, Damilare was fondly addressed as ‘Pastor Dammy,’ ‘one of the God’s Generals,’ ‘Woli agba,’ among other religious nomenclatures.

“There is no way I can forget him. He was my first child. He was very devoted in churches, both at the community and in his school. It is only God that can comfort me. He was a role model to his two siblings.

“He was a cool-headed person. If he was not reading, he was surfing the Internet, studying the Bible or helping his mother in her shop,” the father added in a hushed tone.

While Oyedele managed to control his emotion, his wife, was inconsolable, crying uncontrollably. She had passed out on hearing the sad news and did not regain consciousness until she was taken to a hospital.

The intensity of her wailing during an encounter with our correspondent six days after the incident showed that the family had, indeed, lost an illustrious son.

She said mournfully, “Won ti kan mi leyin okan (They have broken my canine). I learnt my son was beaten to death whereas the army told us he fell and died.

“I don’t want my son to die in vain. The military said he would be buried in Kaduna, but I don’t want my son to be buried there. They should bring his corpse to Lagos.”

Damilare’s younger brother, Moses, explained that his death was painful, noting that he died with many beautiful plans he had for the family.

“There were a lot of promises. He personally promised to be giving me N10,000 out of his salary every month,” he said.

Moses, who also claimed his brother died under questionable circumstances, urged the military authorities to conduct a postmortem on his corpse.

He added, “The military officers that came told us that he slumped and died. But some of his colleagues called and told us that he was beaten to death during ‘welcome home’ tradition at the camp. They said he was complaining that he was tired, but they did not leave him. The witnesses were afraid to speak out so that they would not run into trouble. We are going to take it up; we want to know the cause of his death.”

Meanwhile, friends of the deceased have paid glowing tributes to him on Facebook. One of his friends by the alias, Gallant Captain Whale, described Damilare as “his mentor.”

Whale wrote, “We love you but God loves you more. I won’t forget moments we spent together, my mentor right from school days. Even at death, you are brave. I love you brother from another mother. Rest in peace.”

To Okpewho Abednego Fikioghene, Damilare was “a leader” from whom he had learnt while they were in secondary school.

He said, “RIP, Damilare. You were the Asst. Head Boy, 2014 set; I was the Asst. Head Boy 2015 set. It was a privilege to learn from a leader like you. Live on; your legacy still remains.”

“It really touched me. Everyone said good (things) about you when you left. God loves you most brother. Rest in peace,” another friend, Its Ba Smith, wrote.

The Course Adviser of the deceased at UNILAG, Dr. Ayodele Shittu, said he was Damilare’s confidant, adding that he was in his office to bid him farewell to Kaduna for the training.

Shittu said, “He was very humble and respectful. Academically, he was very sound and he would be finishing with a very good 2:1 (Second Class Upper Division). He had completed his project.

“The news of his death was very shocking. He came to my office while he was leaving. He hardly hid anything from me. I will miss him.”

Efforts by Punchng correspondent to get the reaction of the NDA to the incident and the allegation raised by the family proved abortive.

When our correspondent contacted the the Director, Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Jogn Agim, he directed him to one Major Yahaya, who said he was no longer the NDA spokesperson.

Yahaya gave Saturday PUNCH the phone number of one Major Abdullahi said to be the current spokesperson for the academy. But when contacted, the receiver said it was a wrong number.

CelebritiesIt’ll Be Sad If Anything Bad Happens To Leah Sharibu – Omotola Jalade-ekeinde by wakabobo(op): 5:54am On Sep 08, 2018
WAKABOBO.COM

Ace actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, took a break from the movie scene and upon her arrival bagged an award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards as Best Actress in Drama/TV Series. She shares her excitement as she speaks about the movie industry and other issues with ADEMOLA OLONILUA

How do you feel about winning an award at the just concluded Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards?

I can’t capture the way I feel about winning the AMVCA award in one word. I feel like I have stayed away for so long and the project that I took was worth coming back for. It was a labour of love and it was really hard to do that project. Right now, it just feels great that I did the right thing and hopefully, I would find projects that would challenge me and would even be better than that.

Why did you take a break from the movie industry?

I was focusing on some other things which were based on building. I felt that it was the right time for the stakeholders in the industry to begin to invest in the industry aside from producing movies. My first love was not producing movies. I like real estate and I studied Estate Management. I actually do real estate as a business and I thought about how I could merge real estate and entertainment. That is what I wanted to do. I wanted to do real estate in entertainment and that is what I fell back into. I just want to get properties and begin to think of the process of building cinemas, film studios or film villages.

Does it mean that real estate was actually your first love?

It is not my first love; it is actually what I studied, but I love it.

So what was your first love?

We would not leave here if I have to talk about my first love because I have had a lot of first loves.

How about your singing career; would you revisit that?

You can call that my first love if you want. I know a lot of people get shocked when I say that I love singing more than acting, but that is just the truth and I would have to speak my truth. I know that people think I have not ‘blown’ (made it big) as a singer so they expect me to just say acting is my love, but I would shock the world soon.

Does this mean that you are going back into the studio?

Oh! Of course.

As an activist, what do you think about Leah Sharibu, one of the Dapchi schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram, but still in captivity?

It is very sad, especially as I read something (about her) recently. I do not know if it is true, but someone from the Presidency said that it is only God that can help her now. I am not very sure because sometimes there are false news reports on the internet. If it is true that was said, then that is very sad for this country. It does not matter if she was a Christian or a Muslim neither does it matter if she was a boy or a girl, the fact is that a Nigerian child is involved and she is innocent. We all have children. They are just about to start their life and they do not have any fault in what Nigeria has become today. Imagine a child who is below 18 years of age facing such things. Nigeria is supposed to protect its children. How do we sleep every day knowing that we have the power to do something but we are not (doing it)? I do not understand how we investigate things in Nigeria. I do not see how difficult it is to find her. I feel that people are just careless about this girl and it will be very sad if anything happens to her. I almost have no hope for Nigeria because I do not think that there is going to be any protest over her abduction. I just want people to have the fear of God; that is if they truly believe He exists and if they don’t, they should know that they have children too and they do not know when karma would come for them. They should find that girl and bring her home.

Your nickname is Omosexy. What do you do to remain sexy at 40?

I would say that it is innate.

You do not do exercises?

Unfortunately, I don’t. I wish I could lie about it but I don’t do exercises. I am that lazy. Once in a while when I feel that something is not right, then I spend about two days in the gym. Then I leave because by then, I am over it. I think I am just blessed with good genes. Also, I am very conscious of what I eat and how I take care of myself.

CrimeOne Year-old Twin’s Body Part Cut Off In Lagos Hospital - Graphic by wakabobo(op): 5:42am On Sep 08, 2018
WAKABOBO.COM

A matron at a private hospital on Shibiri Road, Ajangbadi, Lagos State, Mrs. Victoria Ukwu, has been arrested in connection with a mutilated body of a one-year-old twin, Favour Orogbu.

Two nurses at the hospital, Navico Clinic and Maternity, who were on duty on the day of the incident, were also apprehended.

The right cheek of the victim was reportedly sliced off by a yet-to-be identified person after she died at the facility last Friday night. But the matron was said to have claimed that it was a rodent that inflicted the cut.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that Favour and her twin sister, Esther, were rushed to the hospital on Tuesday, August 28, by their mother after they started vomiting. They were admitted.

While Esther was recuperating, Favour’s condition was reportedly deteriorating. She gave up the ghost three days later.

The deceased’s mother, Amaka, said she and her sister-in-law wanted to remove the corpse around 7am on Saturday when the shocking discovery was made.

She said, “Last week Tuesday, around 10am, my twins were vomiting continually and I took them to Navico Clinic and Maternity. I paid N1,500 for the card before the matron attended to them. She asked me when the ailment started and I said about two days ago. She said their medical bill was 10,000 and I deposited N4,000. They were given drips.

“Esther was recuperating, but Favour’s condition did not improve. I met with the matron and she assured me that she would be okay. On Wednesday morning, her condition worsened. I complained again to the matron and she gave her an injection.”

Amaka explained that the matron asked a nurse to administer sleeping pills on Favour on Wednesday evening, adding that her daughter slept all through that night till Friday evening.

The mother said she complained over the long sleep, but the matron reassured her that Favour would be fine.

She recalled, “I left to get the N6,000 balance that Friday evening. When I came back, she was still sleeping and taking another drip. In the night, she started breathing heavily. I rushed to call a nurse to attend to her. She took her to the matron’s office.

“The matron came to meet me outside and enjoined me to be calm. After a while, she came out again and told me that my daughter was dead. She asked me to make arrangements to remove her corpse immediately. I told her that my husband was not around and that I could not handle the situation alone.

“I called my sister-in-law to come to the hospital. I was somewehere at the hospital throughout that night. Around 5am, the doctor came to me again to ask about how I wanted to remove the corpse. Around 7am, my sister-in-law came and went to the ward where Favour was. She saw bloodstains all over the bed sheet that was used to cover the baby. She came back to ask me what was wrong.”

Amaka said she rushed into the ward and confirmed the in-law’s observation, noting that both of them immediately alerted the matron to the discovery.

“The matron brought her corpse out of the ward. On close observation, it was discovered that her face had been sliced off. She said it was a rat that chopped off her face. I went to report to the police at the Ajangbadi Police Division.

“The two nurses that were on duty that day and the matron were arrested. The nurses initially ran away, but they have been arrested,” she added.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, who confirmed the incident, stated that the suspects had been arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, for further investigation.

Oti said, “On September 1, around 12pm, Mrs. Amaka Orogbu of No 4, Salawu Street, Santana Bus Stop, Shibiri, reported that her daughter, Favour Orogbu, was sick and hospitalised at Navico Clinic and Maternity along Shibiri Road, Ajangbadi for treatment.

“On August 31, at 11.30pm, the matron Mrs. Victoria Ukwu, 52, confirmed the death of the baby to her. The baby was wrapped and kept ready for removal. The following morning, the mother discovered that the corpse was bleeding and the right side of the baby’s face was sliced off by an unknown person right inside the hospital and she suspected foul play by the hospital’s staff.

“The said matron was arrested and she confirmed the allegations, but expressed shock at what happened. The nurses on duty have also been arrested and the case is under investigation to ascertain whether or not the clinic is licensed by relevant regulatory agencies to operate as a maternity home.”

Travel1,000 Vehicles Trapped In Kaduna As Youths Barricade Road - Photos by wakabobo(op): 3:45pm On Jul 16, 2018
GIST FROM WAKABOBO.COM

OVER a thousand vehicles and hundreds of commuters were trapped in the busy Kaduna /Kano Highway when youths of Barakallahu under Igabi Local government area of Kaduna State barricaded the road in the early hours of Monday morning.

An eyewitness told the TribuneOnline that the aggrieved youths blocked the highway as early as 7 am thereby preventing commuters travelling to Abuja and other Northern states to travel.

One of the protesting youths who refused to disclosed his name under the condition of anonymity remarked that they blocked the road in order to express their anger over the alleged seizure of their lands by the Nigerian Air Force.

It will be recalled that the residents of Barakallahu and the Airforce had been engaged in a land tussle for a decade with each of them claiming ownership of the said land.

A commuter Anas Anka who was trapped for three hours told the TribuneOnline that he’s travelling to Abuja to meet up an official engagement expressing his worries he might not meet up with the appointment.

He called for a truce between the residents of the area and the Airforce so as to avoid future occurrence, saying, as you can see the commuters travelling on this road are at the receiving end.

Even, though, there was no official response from the Airforce as at the time of filing this report, the combination of the police and other security agencies were on them to ensure the safety of the commuters.

When contacted the spokesman of the Nigerian police in the state, DSP Muktar Aliyu remarked that the road is cleared for commuters.

He said, ‘We have brought the situation under control and commuters plying the road are now going to their respective destinations.

He also said the police will investigate why the youths would take the laws into their hands.

GIST FROM WAKABOBO.COM

The Katsina Police Command has said it will investigate an allegation of sodomy involving a police inspector whose name was given as Lawal Mohammed.

The Inspector was alleged to have had sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old boy.

The boy was reported to have cut off Mohammed’s manhood with a knife during the act.

The cop was initially admitted to Faskari General Hospital from where police authorities reportedly removed him to an undisclosed hospital in Katsina for protection.

Spokesman for Katsina police command, SP Gambo Isah, confirmed the incident on Wednesday night.

He said, “We received a complaint from members of the community that a police inspector was involved in an immoral act and was injured in the process. We had to move him to a hospital for further treatment after he was found in a pool of his blood.

“All we are after now is saving his life. After that, the command will investigate him on the allegation that he was having sex with a 13-year-old boy when part of his penis was cut off by the boy. The outcome of the investigation will determine the next line of action by the command.”

The police spokesman said no arrest had been made in connection with the incident.

Sources revealed that the incident happened on Tuesday night at Tudun Markabu community in the Faskari Local Government Area of the state.

The sources added that the police inspector was initially transferred from Sabuwar Local Government Area to Kankara before his recent posting to Faskari.

CrimeResidents Flee As Two Policemen, Robber Die In Shootout - Details by wakabobo(op): 6:04am On Jul 12, 2018
GIST FROM WAKABOBO.COM

According to Punchng, Some residents of Rumuosi community have fled their homes after two policemen and one suspected armed robber were killed during a shootout on Ozuoba-Rumuosi Road in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Some robbery gang members were said to have opened fire on a police patrol van on the road around 10.30pm on Tuesday, forcing the policemen to respond.

It was gathered that in the ensuing shootout, two policemen died, while one of the robbers was also fatally wounded.

Some residents said while the hoodlums opened fire on sighting the patrol van, a policeman jumped out of the van and hid in a “strategic point.”

They added that it was the policeman that shot and killed one of the hoodlums.

Sources in the community told one of our correspondents that the policemen were on a stop-and-search duty in the area when the incident happened.

It was gathered that some youths were killed by some unidentified assailants three months ago, a development that led to an increase in the level of police patrol in Rumuosi community.

Most shops in the area were closed on Wednesday, as those living close to the scene of the gun battle had fled the area.

Policemen on patrol
An eyewitness, who identified herself simply as Mary, said, “The gunmen ambushed the policemen, killing two of them. Another policeman fought back and killed one of the gunmen. The other robbers escaped

“The policemen were near the Rumuosi market, checking vehicle particulars as usual in the evening before the boys arrived and started shooting. We all ran for our dear lives; it was later that we heard that they killed two policemen.

Another resident in the area, Emeka, said the shooting started around 10.42pm, which forced everyone to scamper for safety.

He said, “Around 10.42pm, when we started hearing the sound of heavy gunshots, we all ran for our lives. If you look around, you will see that some people abandoned their shoes and slippers.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident, adding that the state police command was on the trail of those involved.

Omoni said, “Armed robbers attacked policemen that were on routine patrol in Rumuosi, in the Obio/Akpor LGA. They (armed robbers) ambushed them (policemen).

“But our men were able to return fire, which also killed one of the armed robbers. It happened in the evening. We are on their trail and we are combing the area and getting information to ensure that the suspects are arrested.”

PoliticsHuman Advocacy Group (SERAP) Wants Governors Tried For Looting Security Votes by wakabobo(op): 5:53am On Jul 12, 2018
A human rights advocacy group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, has called for the probe and prosecution of state governors over alleged stealing of security votes.

According to the group, there are widespread allegations about how some state governors have been stealing and mismanaging security votes allocated to their states since the return to democracy in 1999.

It said the stealing of security votes over the years is at the root of the current security challenges facing the nation.

In an open letter by its Deputy Director, Timothy Adewale, SERAP, therefore, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Attorney General of the Federation to, without delay, investigate the suspected governors, both past and serving.

SERAP said it wants complicit ex-governors to be immediately prosecuted, while complicit serving governors should be prosecuted at the end of their tenure.

The group urged Buhari to order the probe within seven days and publish the report as well as the names of such former and serving governors.

It said it would resort to a legal action against the President should he fail to direct the AGF to probe the alleged stealing of security votes.

SERAP said pursuing the case would ensure that public funds were used properly and that “mean state governors would be less likely to misuse or steal security votes.”

SERAP believed that the probe would ultimately improve the ability of state governments to promote, enhance and ensure the security and safety of all Nigerians in their states.

It said, “The lack of transparency and accountability in the spending of security votes is the real cause of many of the security challenges confronting Nigeria.

“State governments across the country are failing to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians and residents despite huge yearly allocations of security votes to governors. These funds are purportedly appropriated for state security.

“However, despite these huge expenditures on security, many state governors are failing to prevent kidnappings, cultism, assassinations and other unlawful killings, maiming of residents and destruction of property.

“SERAP is concerned about the growing allegations of mismanagement, waste, and corrupt practices in the spending of security votes by several state governors.

“Rather than using security votes to promote, enhance and ensure peace and security in their states, many governors have allegedly used and/or still using it as conduit to divert public funds for private gain.”

PoliticsLai Mohammed Launches Campaign Against Fake News In Nigeria - Details by wakabobo(op): 8:38pm On Jul 11, 2018
GIST FROM WAKABOBO.COM

According to NAN, A National Campaign Against Fake News has been launched in Nigeria by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who described the phenomenon a time bomb that can detonate with deadly consequences if left unchecked.

At a world press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, the Minister also described fake news a a global epidemic that could be worse than all the plagues that the world has recorded put together, a clear and present danger to global peace and security, and a threat to democracy.

He said the fake news phenomenon is capable of undermining confidence in the media, adding: ”Once the people lose confidence in the media, the media and the society are in trouble.”

Alhaji Mohammed said the essence of the campaign is to ”sensitize all Nigerians to the dangers posed to the peace and security, and indeed the corporate existence of Nigeria by the phenomenon, and the fact that each and every Nigerian has a role to play in curtailing the spread of fake news”.

He explained that though the federal government has been calling national attention to the issue of fake news and hate speeches since last year, ”the timing of the launch is also not unconnected to the role of fake news in aggravating the various crises in the country as well as the need to check this phenomenon ahead of the 2019 elections.”

The Minister said the government will use all the information dissemination tools at its disposal, work with both the traditional and social media, as well as the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to sensitize Nigerians.

He said the campaign will, however, not involve the use of coercion and censorship, but appealed to the media to lead the campaign, and to Nigerians not to share any news or message unless they can vouch for its source and authenticity

Citing instances from around the world to illustrate the dangers posed by fake news, Alhaji Mohammed said a recent study by researchers at the Ohio State University in the US concluded that Russian interference and the fake news it promoted probably played a significant role in depressing Hilary Clinton’s support on election day during the 2016 presidential elections in the US.

He also said that in India, about a dozen people have been killed in the past six weeks just because of fake news or hoax messages, noting: ”The victims were lynched after they were falsely accused of child abduction based on fake messages circulated via the social media platform, WhatsApp.”

The Minister said that last week, a national newspaper in Nigeria reported on its front page that a court has ordered the National Assembly to begin impeachment of Buhari, which was not the case.

”The problem with that news item is that it is fake news. According to the certified true copy of the order, the Presiding Judge of the Federal High Court in Osogbo ordered and I quote: ‘The applicants are hereby granted leave to issue and bring an Application for the order of Mandamus to compel 1st to 3rd Respondents to start impeachment proceedings against the 4th Respondent, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’. This was manipulated to read that the court has given the go-ahead for the National Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against the President. Fake News,” he said

The launch, which was sponsored by the NTA, FRCN, and three newspapers – The Nation, Vanguard and Leadership – was attended by all the heads of the media parastatals under the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), representatives of the security agencies, social media practitioners and journalists.
