The later will make your benefactor do more for you, but the former can make them think twice. Whenever I complete a gig and I receive my credit alert, I always aclnowledge with a 'thank you'. Some people won't see the need since they feel they are getting paid for their services, but I do it all the time because I was raised to acknowledge a kind gesture with a 'thank you', no matter how small.
