After over five months of protest, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, is ready to call off its industrial action. The decision came after the Union signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with the Federal Government on Wednesday evening in Abuja. The Union was represented by its Chairman, Nasir Fagge, while the Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, stood in for the government. Both confirmed the news to State House correspondents. However, ASUU will address members of the press soon. http://dailypost.com.ng/2013/12/11/ASUU-strike-to- be-suspended-after-fg-union-reach-agreement/ |

ladionline: Perfect, Obanta is identical with Olode. OBA ONI ITA, That in mainstream yoruba would be BATA. OLODE is ONI ODE or ONI ITA. Ode is a variant of ITA. Now check this split: O bu.ru bi 'AJE' OTA. The ancient Yoruba were familiar with Aje, a shrew merchant. Aje means 'wayfaring' here. BTW, bata is an antonym of bara. BATA means sellers' consult, while BARA means buyers' consult. OBANTA is 'prime seller' while OBARA means 'prime buyer'.I enjoyed ur analysis. |

Police in Ebonyi State have uncovered plans by suspected cultists known as Egbela cult in Edda, Afikpo South Local Government Aarea of the state to unleash mayhem in the area during its initiation ceremony. The Police Commissioner of the state, Mr. Maigari Dikko in a statement yesterday said report received by police revealed that some cultists in Edda had perfected plans to unleash terror in the area by recourse to assault on law-abiding citizens, school children, women, government workers, stealing and restriction of people’s movement. He, however, assured the members of the public and the people of Edda that the command had put adequate security measures in place to deal decisively with any person or group of persons, who under any guise resort to intimidation, molestation, destruction, stealing or attempt to restrict the movement of people contrary to the constitution of the country. “In this regard, all the law-abiding citizens in Edda land are advised to go about their legitimate business, children to go to school, workers to report to their places of work and report any act of intimidation and assault to the nearest police station or patrol teams within the area.” Meanwhile, over 150 mobile policemen with an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) have been dispatched to the area to maintain law and order through the period of planned initiation ceremony scheduled to end tomorrow. The Christian leaders in the area had petitioned the police commissioner on the alleged plan by the cult group to cause mayhem and restrict free movement of people, assault and intimidate the people. The petition stated: “Every year, the community and the inhabitants experience these criminal acts of molestation, harassment, unlawful restriction of movement of persons and vehicles, violence and vandalisation of people’s property. This abuse of human rights and destruction of property especially during these occultic initiation rites and ritual is worsened by the fact that miscreants are using the opportunity to perpetrate their evil act. “It may interest you to know that between August and October every year, this obsolete and obnoxious traditional and occultic practice and their corresponding criminal activities take place. Most days within this period, from after the new yam festival till middle or end of October, natives and strangers in Edda land live in fear. Most days, curfew is imposed on non-initiates, women and children from 6.30pm till 6.00am the following day.” The petition also stated that some days of the event witnessed total restriction of movement even along Amasiri-Owutu Road which is state and federal roads, noting that the event lasts for two to three days, saying the main initiation day known as ‘Nkwo Offia’ had been the most violent day. |
MANCHESTER (AFP) – Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson spoke of his pride after unveiling a street named in his honour near the English champions’ Old Trafford ground on Monday. What was Waters Reach will now be known as Sir Alex Ferguson Way. During the Scot’s 26 years in charge, United won 13 Premier League titles, including last season’s top- flight crown and two European Champions League trophies among a slew of silverware. Ferguson, the most successful manager in British football history, retired at the end of last season. Having revealed the new road sign, Ferguson said Monday: “It encapsulates probably the last 26 years – coming to the great club, the history of it. “It’s been an incredible journey for me, ending today for me to unveil this road sign “I’m really proud of that and I’m proud of everyone who has been associated with the club. I’d like to thank Manchester United for inviting me down here, 26 years ago. It was a fantastic elevation in my life and a challenge I accepted. And we are where we are now. “It’s a great, great football club. You, the supporters, have enjoyed it. And I still think that a lot of our young fans don’t remember that there were bad days. Dealing with bad days is what we’re good at. This club will always go on.” The 71-year-old added: “To have a part of Trafford carrying my name is truly humbling.” Sir Alex Ferguson Way will be on the other side of the ground to another stadium approach road, Sir Matt Busby Way, named after Ferguson’s most illustrious predecessor as United manager and the man behind the club’s first European Cup triumph in 1968. |

Against the background of incessant kidnappings and other violent crimes in Edo State, members of various cult groups in the state came together in Benin, weekend, in a move they said was to tackle insecurity in the state. However, the cult groups during their summit with the theme Interactive Peace Summit: Strategy for Social Cohesion, which held at the Sand Beach Resorts, Benin, expressed dissatisfaction with threats posed to Edo and other neighboring states due to the activities of kidnappers, armed robbery gangs and other criminal activities. They resolved to tackle them. Represented Some of the cult groups represented by at the summit included Green Circuit (Maphites), Norsemen (Vikings), , Eiye Confraternity, Family Fraternity of Nigeria and Avarian Organisation of Nigeria. Also in attendance were representatives of Governor Adams Oshiomhole; the Iyase (traditional Prime Minister) of BeninKingdom, Chief Sam Igbe; representatives of the Edo State Commissioner of Police and that of AIG Zone 5 Benin and representatives of the Director, Department of State Services. Others were representatives of the Commandant of Civil Defence and Security Corps, Edo State Neighbourhood Watch Council and the OC, SIB, AIG Zone 5. Chairman of the Consolidated Forum, Donald Edeo- ghon, while acknowledging the damage done by activities of the group, however expressed hope that the coalition of the groups would help in checking crime in the state. He said: “If you remember, for over two decades, inter-group conflicts, which often resulted in violent and fatal crises, were the attributes of EdoState communities. “Innocent lives and property of inestimable worth are destroyed on a whim. “Armed robbery, kidnapping, thuggery and sundry social vices rose to unprecedented levels; it became dangerous to reside and function legitimately in EdoState and in particular, Benin. “The situation looked bad, but then came the platform of Rainbow Consolidated Forum with a template for all seasons.” Chief Igbe expressed joy at what he witnessed and called on the groups not to disappoint, saying “you know I am going to brief the Oba on what I have witnessed here today.” Source: vanguard news paper. |

Labour activist and General Secretary, National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, Joe Ajaero has given the Federal Government one week to resolve its differences with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) or cripple the country with the mother-of-all-strikes. Ajaero who was speaking during the opening of a training workshop organized for labour leaders in Enugu, threatened to ally with other unions across the country to join ASUU on a solidarity stike if the impasse persists. Ajaero said government was being insensitive to the plight of Nigerian students because the children of the rich are studying outside the country. He said: “If ASUU issue is not addressed, we will shut this country alongside other unions. We will ally with other unions and make sure that nothing works in this country. This is not a strike based on demand, it’s based on agreement. As government, you must honour your agreement. Here, there’s no social security, the price of food is high, the same goes for electricity tariff. We are going to join our children to stay at home and let them run the system,” he threatened. |
