Danielhouston: @Op, from your actions it is obvious you really do not understand the ins and out of Nairaland. I will advise you to just sit back, relax, and just read through some of the threads here. You can participate if you want, but one golden rule is, never to take anything here personal, no matter how the message is. I bet you, if you were here pre the 22rules era, your thread would have been abandoned may be on page 4, the rest will be from trolls and haters. Like I said, just sit back read and enjoy the forum, it is anonymous unless you decide not to make it anonymous. As for me, I am a ghost here, even when a mod tried to do some investigative work on me. He knows himself, I guess he thinks he knows my name from the private pm he sent . Well, life goes on. You can check out (Toytown Germany), it's a nice forum for ex-pats in Germany. You will learn a lot there 20 Likes |

Danielhouston: At bolded, unfortunately, this is what we have to fight against, as long as we are not in Africa. The issue of race is really a global pandemic, albeit a very silent one. Some countries have it good, some bad. We just happen to find ourselves on the other side of the coin. I don't blame them most times, I just wish my country was not bastardized by our leaders. But hey, life goes on! 2 Likes 1 Share |

janettee: The intro in the video said it all, children from poor families, family who literally do not speak German, and little or no education. With such a combination, it is very difficult for such children to get into a Gymnasium, it is just the way the system is, it affects both white and black. That is why I said, if one of the parents is educated, you can request and enforce that your child must attend a Gymnasium. This is not a criterium for success, you as a parent will also have to invest your time with your child, this is rather something that most African parents, who do not have a professional job, do not do. 2 Likes 1 Share |

janettee: We have structural racism in virtually all western countries. I can not think of any without such. What we have to know is, all blacks are from Africa, no matter the color of your passport. It is either your father. grandfather or great......grandfather was African. What is my point here, for Germany to be at par with say countries like France, UK, Belgium, Netherland, it's going to take at least one or two-generation. You need numbers, you need education, you need to fight the system, the only way to do it is by going the legal route. Look at the Turkish community as an example, they still get discriminated against up to this day, but it doesn't deter them. You see them virtually everywhere, rich, poor, bad, drug what have you. Well if I were Turkish, I sure will feel bad to be discriminated against, since the country was literally rebuilt by Turkish. As for the German educational setup, I personally do not like it, because destinies are created too early, which most times can be dangerous. Migrant children are sent to Hauptschule, Realschule and not to gymnasium plays an important role in the society, Germans know this and are using this. It is now left for us, the coming generation to fight this. In most cases I have seen, if one of the childs parent has a degree, the child is allowed to attend a gymnasium. The parent can enforce it, I have seen this here in my city. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Danielhouston: From my post, I did not shame refugees, but fake Nigerian refugees. We all know Nigeria is safe, it is only unsafe if you are gay/lesbian, that is a fact. But 95% of Nigerian applicants are not homosexuals, ( I have met many, I also play active football in an African amateur league here so I know the story) they are economic migrants like me. So, this is where I hate the system, if I come in as a student, pay my dues( work and study) even pay taxes too, follow the rules to the latter just to get pr, and someone else, also an economic migrant like me, decides to use the loophole in the system, to cut corners and get pr, is that fair? Yes, the German authorities have the sole right to decide who they want to grant Asylum. When I said I find it shameful, for Nigerians applying for such, my aforementioned point was the bases. 7 Likes |

Okay, I have read some replies here and I would like to share my own opinion, which is also bias. Why don't we have large amount of Black doctors, bus drivers, train drivers, etc? This answer to this question is simple. Germany lost its colonies after WW1, this influenced the numbers of Africans who came to the country post WW2. Look at it this way, most European countries used their colonial power to build their country, it was easy for Nigerians/Ghanaians, etc, to migrate to the UK, the effect of this early migration is seen today in the country, where you have blacks as CEOs, chief medical doctors, politicians, etc. So, colonial rule played an important role to all colonial power house. Germany on the other, lost her colonial power after WW2 imported Turkish people to rebuild the country, and the effect is seen today. You have Turkish people virtually everywhere in the economy. Secondly, numbers also matter a lot, as of 2013, there were approximately 817,000 Afro-Germans in a country with a population of 82,000,000 people. This number is difficult to estimate because the German census does not use race as a category, following the genocide committed during World War II under the "German racial ideology".Up to 70,000 (2% of the population), people of Afro-German origin live in Berlin. source: Wikipedia With these numbers, how would you meet black train/bus drivers, doctors/nurses? But if you look further, we have quite a few numbers of African doctors, this is a video of an African doctor in Germany, not just a doctor but a neurosurgeon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ReBILTSBZ4. So people should not play the racism card when you do not see Africans in very sensitive positions. I won't say racism does not exist, it does, I happen to live in the most conservative part of the country, and trust me I see racism from a mile off. Concerning the refugee ish. I personally think Germany as a country does not help you if you try, or try to try. I don't know if that makes any sense. As a student, you are trying to get the required knowledge so that you can work and better your life. There is no palliative for you, it is either to stick to the rules or get the f***k out. But if you stop trying, and just cry and lie, the rule is different, you get palliative, you have access to things that students do not have and so on. But who am I to complain, it's not my country. But, I find it shameful for a Nigerian to apply as a refugee, If you are not gay and outed, you have no business applying for such. To me, the non-gay Nigerians abuse the system and do more harm than good. I usually do not pity them, no matter the story, they are all economic migrants like me. This is just me ranting, and of course, my opinion is bias. 26 Likes 1 Share |

Acuna91: If Mr. A finishes and can not secure a job related to his degree, he can still apply for other jobs pending when he can get what he desires. But this is really tricky. The contract has to be approved by the "Bundesagentur für Arbeit"(Federal Ministry for Labour and Social Affairs ). Once the file gets here, the pyramid rule is applied, the ministry will ask Mr. As' employer if there are no Germans or EU citizens who can do that job, most times they send applicants to them if they have, or you get lucky and it is approved, then Mr. A apply for a normal work permit, which is different from the blue card. (it takes longer to get a pr with such work permit). The second scenario, you apply for a Ph.D. if you were really bright, your professor could give you a contract or find funding for your work. Or you apply for another master.....this is usually the last resort. Mr. A has to sort out his finances, he may be required to block some money in his account, or get an equivalent job contract to show. 13 Likes |

Danielhouston: I will chip in here, in the state of Bavaria, the years of study does not count when applying for a permanent residence permit, but if you have been working and paying into the Deutsche Rentenversicherung for 60 months at the time of application, then it is considered. But we all know real students don't work full time, if they do, then only during holidays. And for you to actually pay into the social system you have to earn above 450. 5 Likes |

omobamatrix:Grades are quite high here. (1.0) – outstanding (A+) >= 95% (1.3) – very good (A) 94-91% (1.7 to 2.3) – good, seen as a relatively good result (A- to B) 81-90% (2.7 to 3.3) – satisfactory (B- to C) 66-80% (3.7 to 4.0) – sufficient (D) 50-65% (5.0) – fail, no certificate issued (F) 0-49% The above is what is obtainable in Bavaria. I don't know if other cities use the same grading system. I doubt if your final grade affects your job search, I did not present my certificate during my job search. What prospective employers look at is your CV, but there is an exception to this. If you are applying to big companies, they usually indicate what they want on the job advert. Your grades become important if you are moving from BSc. -> MSc. or MSc. -> Ph.D. 6 Likes |

olioxx:I won't' want to generalize, but for my field(CS), what I learned in Nigeria was not actually up to par. For example, I took a module called distributed systems, It is assumed that I am proficient in an OOP language, design patterns are also considered foundational prerequisites. If you don't have these, and attend the class, the discussions are always high level, because they do not only talk theoretical aspect but also practical application and implementation of ideas with real-life scenarios. In Nigeria, data structure, for example, is taught theoretical, you as a student will not build an application to reinforce data structure concepts. You just read, cram, and pass the exams. Not to sound racist, but Indians and Pakistanis were really not the kind of friends I wanted to have, It is good to have competitive friends but the competition has to be healthy. I had an Indian classmate who always wanted to know what grades you had but always lied about his, unlike the Germans who do not give a f**k, even if they fail, they say it as it is. Germans believe in "Zusammenarbeit" = Teamwork, this is what makes them efficient. Right now, I have an Indian colleague in my team who thinks she writes the cleanest code, right from day one her code review comments were always shitty and degrading. The day i called her out brought an end to it. 16 Likes |

Just like @chuksey1 said, education in Germany is very tough, I mean very very tough. Usually, your first semester makes you feel dumb because most often than not, the foundation you had in Nigeria is very poor and insufficient. You have to read more so as to catch up and most profs. really don't have this pedagogic skills in teaching. You may attend some lectures and come out more confused and lost. They usually assume you already have the foundational knowledge. But some of the profs. who taught me were really super nice, had a couple of beer with some, and another took us on a picnic at the end of the semester all for free. Personally, the exams are really brutal, I thought I was better at written exams than oral exams, but after my first two-semester, I made sure not to take any written exams. In oral exams, you just have to talk and make sure you answer the questions asked, It sure has its disadvantages but it is way better than written exams. Most written exams are 90mins, and some are open book, meaning you can come in with whatever material u want, but it must not be electronic. This kind of exam is not funny. I was lucky to have more Germans as classmates, they were really helpful and they kind of show you the way and method in passing exams. Indians/Pakistanis were never on my list of must-haves. They are cheeky and want to be seen as the best( most intelligent), so they tend to hoard information. 35 Likes 1 Share |

Seun: If you enable larger uploads. Hmm, I don't even know how you are hosting this site? But you will also have to consider storage, which is not cheap. Why not have an algorithm implemented at your backend that resizes the picture to a specific size without degrading the image, and then the frontend can fetch the final result. And the pictures should not be aligned one after the other, it makes it unusable for mobile users, you can create a folder type of handler to hold all pictures and users can decide to click on it to view or ignore. This shouldn't be so hard for you na Oga Seun. Secondly, the security guarding how to post is crap. if you fix this, it will help reduce the scam/spammers on your site. How do you solve this issue? Assign a minimum number of characters to be accepted, it should not be less than 100, this engages your users to write good content and not just gibberish or posting memes. Thirdly, you can actually revamp this site and still maintain this same usability. Finally, please, do no take this thread to the front page. ABEG!! 52 Likes 2 Shares |
