Because that the reason the Republicans gave for not screening or hearing Obama's nomination. In the future a Senate that has the majority won't feel constitutionally bound to screen the presidential nomination from a president in the opposition party on very flimsy excuses.

Your argument would have made sense if it was another party that made that their philosophy. But for the Republicans to believe you don't nominate a supreme Court judge in an election year when it doesn't favour to them, and then believe that it's the constitutional responsibility of the president to nominate a supreme Court judge, even in an election month because it now favours them, reeks of dishonesty and bad faith politics.

Before you can even talk about a confirmation, you must first talk about a hearing. It's like talking about failing an exam without even allowing you sit for an exam. How can you say someone failed an exam he was not allowed to sit for?

The senate under Mitchell Mcconnell did not even give Obama's nomination a hearing not to talk of not confirming it. His excuse or justification was that the nomination was too close to the elections and that the responsibility of nominating a supreme Court judge should be left to the president who wins the next elections.
