Yes I hope to do the CFA qualification too but I am currently running ACCA. I am thinking of finishing the ACCA first before doing CFA. I am still at the early stages of ACCA and I know for sure that CFA is more relevant to my experience.

What do you think? Should I continue with ACCA or jump ship now to CFA since I haven’t gone far with ACCA?

Which of the qualifications(ACCA or CFA) brings more opportunities in the wider London economy asides the banking industry?

Hi,

I think I sent you a pm sometimes ago. Hope you're settled now?

How far have you gone with your ACCA? I get requests occasionally from recruiters for qualified and part qualified ACCAs. I can pass these to you when I get them, assuming you are interested in accountant roles. Pay is not bad and sometimes offer flexible working.

Hello wonderful People.

Please I need guidance for a Nigerian Chartered Accountant who will be coming to work in the UK, wife is a health worker who already secured a job and resides in the UK.

1. What are the necessary courses or exams he needs to take for a good career start,

2. what are his chances of moving his career ahead in the UK.

3. Is there a support group or social media threads he can follow for proper guidance and mentorship.

Thank you.

Hi,

He may and may not need to retrain or register with a UK body. It depends on a combination of factors. There are wide range of professions opportunities for a chartered accountant. Finance, Risk, Audit, Business management etc.

What is he doing at the moment? Industry, years of experience, specific skillset etc

What are his career plans?

How does coming to the UK fit into his long term career plan?

How flexible and adaptable is he?

Interesting. Never knew about the 489 route. Can you shed some light.

I would be sending you a PM please.

You are not alone brotherly. Some of us still dey re-strategising. Have you considered 489 as an option? Just in case you still find the English difficult. I don't have Yoruba accent like that but I haven't been able to get 79 in Speaking with PTE but you never can tell. With more practice you may subdue the PTE mountain.

Thanks. I will contact you if I do decide to go with TOEFL.

EOR = Enquiry on Result. It is simply a request for remark of one's IELTS result.

TookieJ:

I feel for you, bro. Sorry to hear about the recent setbacks. Nothing to do but pick yourself up and try again.

My handwriting is absolutely terrible, so I never bothered with IELTS; went with TOEFL instead. I could share the simulator I used - but, to be honest, it may not address the weak points you identified (speaking and writing). While the simulator has all 4 sections, it doesn't quite grade your speaking and writing (only reading and listening are graded). It might help with confidence, though. Happy to share, if you still feel its worth it.

I'm not sure I know what an "EOR" is - but I'm sure there are people on this thread with enough insight and experience to help you beat it.

Good luck as you pick yourself back up.

Still here folks. Stopped following Part 1 on page 400 (about the time spyroxy1 got grant). Had a disappointing IELTS (9.0,8.5, 7.5,7.0) result again. EOR took more than three months and still came back negative. I need 20 maximum points. Got discouraged and abandoned thread.

But I am back. Congratulations to all who have received ITA, grant and conquered English.

Speaking and writing are my weak points. I have never scored more than 7.5 at any point in both. My handwriting is terrible. I have a thick ''bush'' Yoruba accent. Is PTE any easier? I don't want to throw away money again. No point rushing. Any ideas my people?

Praiseisgood had both his degree and ACA assessed as equivalent to Australian degree separately and on their own merit.

Toslad I think graduated from OOU and had no issues with CAANZ.

The key is to support your application with course syllabus, transcript and any other requirements listed on the applicable website.

I have not taken PTE. There are tonnes of free material on the internet to help you prepare. Loads of people have aced PTE on this thread. You are in good hands.

When you are done preparing you could contact spyroxy1 for mock test kit. I have read here this helps gauge one's level of preparation and identify areas of weaknesses to improve on. Majiouk sells PTE exam vouchers. I read he is reliable.

Post below from another nairalander on this thread would also be beneficial to you.

Some guys on this forum (jamson and some other guy) said that one should watch all Youtube videos by navjot brar. The teacher is an Indian woman with a heavy accent but don't let that worry you. Just pay attention to what she says and practise them. Omo you go blast PTE
. Her videos worked for me big time.
Here are some links where she gave tips on how to pass the Speaking module because that's the part that is generally most problematic.

Thank you wisemen045

i have more questions.
since i work in a state internal revenue service, 75% of my job duties is tax related but i can't apply for taxation accountant since i do not know about australian tax laws as required by the IPA and CPAA. The reference my employer will give me will mostly contain tax related job duties and i intend to base my application on general accountant or management accountant.

Can i get a declaration notarised by a notary public or affiadavit in the high court stating my duties as stated in ANZSCO job duties? will that be acceptable to the asessing authourity.? if not is there any way around this challenge.

many thanks for your response.

Your best bet is to assess as a taxation accountant since that closely aligns with your current job functions. You shouldn't worry yourself about your knowledge of Australian tax law for now. Whether you decide to assess as an Accountant (general), Management or Taxation accountant you would most likely be expected and required to be a chartered or certified member of CAANZ, CPAA or IPAA to practise in Australia. At least, that is what I have read and heard. I will summon other accountants to help with more info on this.

You can use court declaration or notarised statement containing details of your work experience but the assessing body is under no obligation to accept/consider/use it to assess you. The preponderance of the supporting documents you attach to support the court declaration and the independent findings of the assessing bodies are the determining factors. Note that you would have to state on the court declaration the reason why you could not get reference letter from your employer. You might also need to get a letter from a supervisor or colleague to support the court affidavit/declaration.

Hello house,

i have BSC (Accounting) from Olabisi Onabanjo university
I also have MSC (International Accounting and Finance )from University of birmingham -UK
I have got 5 years working experience with one of the state internal revenue service
i wish to apply as General Accountant(221111) or management accountant(221112) with either CPAA or IPA
i do NOT have ICAN or ACCA

please what are my chances of getting a positive outcome from the assessing bodies.

many thanks

You shouldn't have any trouble getting a positive assessment as long as your degrees cover the required competency areas recognised by the assessing bodies. In my view, any gap in competency area not covered by your Undergraduate degree from OOU should have been addressed by the MSC from Birmingham.

Check link below for the competency requirements. All the accounting assessing bodies recognise and work with it.

https://www.cpaaustralia.com.au/become-a-cpa/migration-assessment/criteria-and-requirements

So you really need not worry. Visit the websites of the assessing bodies to familiarise yourself with the other documents you need to assess and start the process. You need to demonstrate proficiency in English language to assess.

Hi Wisemen, yes I have an update from her. But honestly, let me state that even she finds their position strange so I wasn’t sure I should post especially as it is just one WES official’s word. But here goes.

Yes she did reapply but WES advised her to withdraw her application as the evaluation will not change (note that she had contested it so they are familiar with her case). According to her, WES says all persons applying with ICAN will now get the equivalent of ‘2 years professional study’ however it will also state that it is ‘not comparable to a completed Canadian education credential’. She says a senior WES official claims they have done their research on ICAN and going forward they will stop the positive evaluation and all those they have given a positive evaluation for ICAN are simply lucky. She also has a certificate of insurance from CII, UK. The WES person handling her issue confirms to her this will get the equivalent of a college level certificate comparable to a Canadian credential. So that is what she is evaluating now and not her ICAN. She also finds it ridiculous that they will evaluate the insurance certification higher than ICAN but that’s what she was told.

Speechless!

Thanks for your effort.

Bsbabe,

Your post from Part 2 thread below refers.

Please, do you know if the individual has reassessed with WES? I just filled out the WES assessment and need to be double sure before payment. In my case, I selected ICAN as the name of the institution while for name of diploma/certificate I indicated ''Associate Chartered Accountant''. Can you help find out if this is the correct way to reflect the credential information.

Calling on Goldenjem and other accountants who have successfully assessed ICAN with WES to help clarify.

copy Cochtrane, GlitteringStar

Thanks.

''Good morning everyone. Just to update you on the individual that got an unfavourable evaluation on her ICAN which I posted sometime ago. Apparently, she has found out the reason why the evelaution came out unrecognised. When she contacted WES, she was told she was evaluated as someone who earned a ‘Certificate of Membership from ICAN’ and not as an ‘Associate of the Institute’. She says that’s probably because she selected “ICAN” and not “Associate of the Institute” when registering with WES. So Wes wrote ICAN to confirm Certificate is genuine and evaluated as certificate of membership. Now she’s starting another one, she says she now sees that one can select “Associate of the Institute” and that’s what she’s doing this time.

[i]This is just to guide other people evaluating ICAN. She is 2013 if I remember correctly and she states she has met a 2010 person with positive evaluation. So maybe it’s not the year? I don’t know. Please note that I do not have ICAN and have no further information or insights on this. I just thought to report what I was told in case it helps someone.''

Read this post to know more.

The link was helpful. I used that opportunity to explore GoldenJem's post on the issue. The assessing body (WES) has the final say on equivalency based on latest information supplied to it by ICAN. It was said that ICAN had updated its syllabus with WES. So, I will give it a try when I finally decide.

Thank you so much for your time and kind guide.

For the ICAN, it will be evaluated as a Canadian equivalent degree if you obtained it under the new syllabus. With your BSc certificate and the ICAN certificate (if evaluated as a Canadian equivalent), you can choose two or more certificates.

Thanks so much. You've been most helpful.

Please, can you throw more light on the new syllabus part of your response with regards to ICAN. I qualified in 2008. I requested for a copy of the transcript from ICAN about 2 months ago and I observed that some of the modules listed had titles different slightly or completely from what it used to be back then. Do you think this has taken care of the old syllabus - new syllabus dichotomy?

What is the ECA summary (Canadian equivalent) for the three certificates?

I have not done the ECA but I have read that the degree in Accounting is equal to a four year degree in Canada while the ICAN ranks as 2 year professional education/degree. I don't know about CISA yet.

Hello All,

Kindly help clarify.

I have a degree in accounting, ICAN and CISA.

If I have ECA done by WES for these three can I proceed to choose my highest level of education as 'two or more certificates, diplomas or degrees''. I noticed this significantly boosts my CRS score than selecting bachelor's degree as the highest level of education.

Kindly help clarify.

Congrats Cochtrane. I found your FAQ and bookmarks of the thread very useful. Go and prosper in the land!

Wow! The PR route might get tougher. This is indeed an eye opener and insightful. Na this part sweet me pass:

New citizenship laws will be stronger

The government will introduce new citizenship laws this week and Immigration Minister Peter Dutton says they'll focus on English language competency and more thorough background checks.
But the changes are set to be blocked in the Senate by Labor, the Greens and now the NXT, which confirmed its position to Fairfax Media on Tuesday.

"We will not be supporting the bill's passage through the Parliament," NXT senator Stirling Griff said. Mr Dutton's plan was "an attempt to fix problems that don't exist", he said.

Hello house, a friend of mine wrote IELTS about 6 or 7 weeks ago and had LRWS 9,9,8.5, 6.5, hence was devastated. We thus begged him to appeal his score ( since he told them he stutters/ stammers). Interestingly, his results were released again and his speaking module was jerked up to 7.5. I thus want to encourage anyone cheated of bands by IELTS to challenge them fast. The final results may take up to 6 weeks to be released but if increased it will be testimony time for the concerned persons.
More of such testimonies abound on the IELTS thread in this forum.

Amen. I second your view.

I just submitted a request for remark. I was scored 6.5 in writing and still got a band score of 7.5. I believe it will end in praise.
