He just has no restraint. He won the battle but eventually lost the war. In four years he has thrown away everything his father worked for just because he failed to stoop to conquer. If Buhari had not being playing neutral at the beginning he would have been crushed. |

XhosaNostra: I read that the Ethiopian famine happened in '84, but I guess the effects were long reaching, because the pictures were still all over the news, well into the 90s when this was said to me. I'm no spring chicken either But I honestly don't remember the hunger in Somalia, even though we could be closer in age by the sound of it. I started hearing about starvation in ethiopia in the late 90s/2000s when American celebrities started going there. Before then everything I saw on local TV about the country was positive. I however knew there was was civil war in Somalia as early as the early 90s. So I saw a lot of pics of starving women and children on TV that was caused by the war. |

OK, now I get your reasons. Understood. In my household Somalia was the country used for that purpose. Maybe it's because I am in my mid thirties. I think the Ethiopian Hunger thing came after the war induced Hunger in Somalia. |

I think you guys should be ashamed of yourselves drooling all over XhosaNostra like hounds over stinking poo! Mstchew. I have no interest interreligious or interethnic arguments. As a fellow Yoruba I consider these kind of competition among tribes really weak. How does it help your personal growth? Why don't you get inspired silently and pursue your own dreams? Why are you living your life vicariously through other men who have made it and librerated themselves and their loved ones? It's not cool. This is what the least intellectual men spend their time doing. It gets you nowhere. Pursue your own dreams and become recognised yourself. |

XhosaNostra: I believe she was arrested. So yes, she survived the famine. Her uncle was a traditional healer. I can't remember the whole story now, but yeah, she fooled everyone & they paid dearly for it. Reminds me of a time I visited my mum's hometown in the year 2001. They are fishermen over there. The sea brought silth to the seashore that made it difficult for fishermen to enter the sea with their boats. The villagers were so frustrated that they tried all sorts of things to make the silth disappear. Some of the things they tried included bringing a prophet who came to pray on the sea and a witch doctor who told them to offer sacrifices of soft drinks and other things. I could not help laughing. They were so frustrated that they would try anything. They gave up eventually when nothing worked. About six years later, the damn thing disappeared on its own just the way it came. |

XhosaNostra: Oh, I see. Well each people have their own share of blunders & miscalculations. Ours is the most shameful & embarrassing one lol. Back in the time of colonization. The Xhosa people were so fed up with white people. They wanted them gone, "back to the ocean where they came from". So anyway, one girl claimed that she had a vision, where the ancestors told her she must tell the people that the solution to the "white problem" was for them to slaughter all their livestock & burn all their harvest. In return, the spirits were going to drive white people away. Desperate times call for desperate measures, so most people did as they were told. They destroyed everything they had & waited. They waited & waited, but nothing happened lol. After a while people started dying from hunger. Some were looking for her, wanting to kill her for making a fool of them. To this day, it is speculated that she either had mental issues or played a prank on those gullible enough to listen to her. One stupid move impoverished the Xhosa people for generations to come. Wow! How did she get to be so influential being so young? Was she from a special family with supposed spiritual powers? I see there was photography already. What year was this? Did she survive the famine herself? |

XhosaNostra: Very insightful. Oshe So how do Yorubas feel about him? Not many Yorubas know the story. I studied History in the University. Until then I did not know anything about Afonja. People just know that Ilorin is part of the Fulani caliphate. The military systematically discouraged my generation from studying history. The whole Afonja thing is really just a nairaland thing. This place has its own lingo sometimes. I personally don't see anything negative in it. He was an ambitious human. Things did not turn out as he planned. What he did is what many attempt. The ones who succeeded are those we now call great. |
Romance › Re: Have You Traveled Just To Have Sex? From Where To Where, See People Comment.pics by WORLDPEACE(m): 10:04pm On Jan 18, 2019 |
XhosaNostra: I think I read it somewhere here on NL. He was a traitor or something like that. But you can tell me more about it Afonja was a general under the Yoruba Oyo empire. There were many youruba kingdoms but Oyo was the only one that became a great empire. It conquered other Yoruba groups and it's dominion got as far as part of present day Republic of Benin. However, at no time in its history did it annex all Yoruba land. Where I am from, for example, was never part of the empire, even though it's part of Yoruba land. Oyo had the tradition of transfering their most senior and troublesome general to the most troublesome part of the empire-Usually newly conquered peoples who were still resisting conquest. So during Afonja's time it was at Ilorin he was posted. He planned with a Fulani Scholar Alimi and Hausa slaves to break away from Oyo. He succeeded. Then the son of the Fulani Scholar after the Scholar died overthrew him and made Ilorin part of the newly establish Fulani Caliphate. That's the story. What do you think about it? |

momoyama: What do you mean by asking what I am trying to 'achieve'? I am interested in visiting Nigeria and I have a special interest in it. I just do not like those who use the 'travel' section of this site (which I thought was about travel to Nigeria and by Nigerians to other countries) to attack the country and repeat ignorant stereotypes in order to keep people from visiting. I do not want to get into arguments about things that I admittedly do not know, but when people talk in extremes and with exaggeration, it is difficult not to comment. I certainly will visit Eko. As to hotels, I have a Nigerian friend here whose cousin owns a hotel in Ikeja, but I am tempted to stay in the Radisson Blue, where my Nigerian employee here has worked in the past and recommends. Wherever I actually stay, I will make sure I see the city and experience it in its entirety. Been reading some of your posts. I like your comments. Have you eventually visited Nigeria? What was your experience like? |
