The Governor of Imo state, Ikedi Ohakim, has been accused of flogging Mr. Ikenna Samuelson severally with horsewhip popularly referred to as koboko. The governor was said to have ordered the arrest of Samuelson who was taken to his office by his security aides over a petition he wrote against Ohakim Samuelson allegedly wrote several petitions to the state House of Assembly asking the law makers to probe the governor and his administration over alleged fraud. Samuelson was also said to have pasted the petitions on the internet, an action which the governor felt disgracd him. P.M.NEWS learnt from a letter sent to the governor by Lagos lawyer, Festus Keyamo, that governor Ohakim brought out the horse whip immediately the victim was brought into the office and started thrashing him for over 120 times in the presence of his Chief Security Officer, who also pointed a gun at him. The victim, in an e-mail to Mr. Keyamo to help him fight the injustice, narrated how he was molested by the governor. Samuelson said immediately he was ushered into the governor’s office, “the door was locked leaving me only with Ohakim and his CSO in the office. The CSO pointed his gun at me. “Ikedi Ohakim on his own shouted at me to pull off my clothes completely. At that point I knew that I was in danger, so I played along. As I was removing my clothes, Ohakim stood up from the office chair and came to me and forcefully removed my clothes. “Another young man of about 33yrs wearing an ash coloured suit came into the Governor’s office to assist Ikedi Ohakim completely remove my clothes. I became completely naked before Ikedi Ohakim in the office of the Governor.” Samuelson further claimed that the governor thereafter went to his table and brought out the horsewhip after hitting him several times with his hands and legs and threatening to kill him. “Ikedi Ohakim flogged, flogged and flogged me ruthlessly, heartlessly and without mercy. He kicked me several times without mercy. “The pain was much. I cried, cried and called on Almighty God to come to my rescue. I must have received well over 120 strokes of koboko. “My blood completely stained the rug in the Governor’s office. I was in pains. I saw hell with my two eyes. “Ikedi Ohakim continued to flog me. His brother Emma Ohakim walked in and said ‘Chineke, His Excellency, His Excellency’. “Ikedi Ohakim said to his brother ‘Emma, this is Ikenna Samuelson. I will kill him today’. Emma simply left the office.” He said when the pains became unbearable, he grabbed Ikedi Ohakim’s legs and pleaded with him reminding the governor that they were in-laws. “He then shifted a chair and sat down with the koboko still in his hands,” he said adding that the governor started to shout, “Samuelson you have disgraced me in this country. You have finished me. I will kill you and nothing would happen.” He claimed that the governor asked him to mention the names of his sponsors, which he denied having. Samuelson said he was later handed over to the state Commissioner of Police and the state Director of the State Security Service. In a letter sent to the governor by Mr. Keyamo, the lawyer threatened to use every legal means possible to ensure that justice was done. Keyamo said: “I know it is so convenient for politicians like you to quickly point to ‘political enemies’ when you are publicly engaged on thorny issues. “But you cannot bath with petrol and stay close to fire when your enemies are around. In other words, you also have a duty to act decently and in tandem with the laws of the land so as not to arm your political opponents. “Chief Ikedi Ohakim, you may think that because you enjoy immunity under the constitution, you may get away with this kind of atrocity. “But your immunity is only temporary. And there are other measures to bring you to book, even now! “Consequently, we are sending this open letter to the House of Assembly, Imo State, as notice to them of your barbaric actions, and to see if they can muster forth the courage and political will to investigate you and commence impeachment proceedings against you.” He also informed the governor that copies of the letter would be forwarded to the Inspector General of Police and the SSS to investigate him and keep the report pending when he would be striped of immunity. “I also intend to test the law as to how far we can take the concept of immunity vis-à-vis the commission and/or perpetration of such heinous crimes by a sitting public officer ringed with immunity. Thus expect my court papers soon! ”Should all of these fail, I wish to inform you that I will patiently wait for you to climb down from your Olympian height as Governor (no matter how long it takes) to begin civil and criminal proceedings against you,” the letter stated reminding the governor that Samuelson was taken away and on his orders, detained for weeks, charged to court and remanded in Owerri Prisons! “The charges are as ridiculous as the physical assault in you office. The eight-count charge accused Samuelson of publishing “falsehood” and thereby “bringing the Imo State Governor into public ridicule and hatred!” Keyamo maintained. This is not the first time a Nigerian would be so treated by a sitting governor. In the 1970s, a journalist, Chris Amakiri, who wrote a story on former military governor Diete Spiff, had his head shaved with broken bottle. He was said to have written a story against the governor on the day he was marking his birthday, which the governor did not find interesting. Spiff, who is now a royal father, promptly ordered the arrest of the journalist who was severely tortured before his head was shaven with a broken bottle. http://thepmnews.com/2010/02/19/for-daring-to-call-for-his-probe-governor-flogs-petitioner-victim%e2%80%99s-lawyer-pursues-legal-challenge |
Lewd singer, St. Janet, is now in fresh trouble as the body responsible for music promotion in Nigeria, Music Advertising Association of Nigeria (MAAN), has placed a ban on her album. Speaking with P.M. Entertainment, the National President of MAAN, Alhaji Waheed Oyediran, said that the association decided to place a ban on the singer’s work because of the lyrical content of her live audio CD which the association considered immoral. Oyediran said that the association has instructed all its members to ensure strict compliance with the new directive, adding that a task force has been constituted and empowered to arrest any member who advertises or plays the work. While accusing the CEO of Galaxy Music, Ahmed Adepoju, of aiding Shina Ayo Oyinlola, the artiste’s promoter, to sell the CD, the MAAN president said: “We discovered that Galaxy is responsible for the distribution of the work titled Faaji Series. We called him to a meeting and warned him and the promoter to stop the distribution, but instead of stopping it, they began an underground distribution of the offensive work.” The MAAN president, however, promised to do everything within his capacity to ensure that the record is taken out of circulation, saying, “no matter what it will cost us, our association should set a good example not to encourage bad music.” Earlier, President of PMAN, Admiral Dele Abiodun had placed a ban on the offensive work, while the unrepentant St. Janet said her music is not for kids but adults and that her greatest critics are her fans. Since she released the controversial music, she has been derided by right thinking members of the public. Some have even gone to the extent of calling her the Jezebel of this generation. CONTRARY to what soccer-loving Nigerians have been made to believe, embattled coach of the Super Eagles, Shaibu Amodu, may lead the team to the South Africa 2010 World Cup afterall. The coach was recently redeployed to train the home-based national team with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) saying that it had begun the search for a quality technical adviser to take over Nigeria's preparation and participation at the Mundial. But an official of the NFF hinted early in the week that the search was a ruse to divert attention from the coach and later make it necessary for the federation to recall Amodu to the team before the World Cup. The NFF had in the wake of the Angola 2010 African Nations Cup mentioned Guus Hiddink, Trappatoni, Hassan Shehata, Peter Taylor, and Luis Van Gaal, among others, as coaches that could take over the national team. But according to the source who pleaded anonymity, the NFF knows that "no coach employed between now and the kick-off of the World Cup can lead the Super Eagles to win the title. So, it amounts to a waste of money and time to begin to talk of getting a coach for Nigeria now. "But Nigerians don't want to hear that. So, to please the people, they started this chase for a foreign coach. But we all know that it will not work. The NFF will continue with the search until it becomes clear that getting a new coach will no longer be advisable, and people will start clamouring for the return of Amodu. "Some of us advised that the team be handed over to a combination of Siasia and Keshi to prepare for the World Cup, but somehow, some people don't want to hear about the two coaches. So we will watch and see." The Guardian learnt that a meeting of some pro-Amodu campaigners in Surulere, Lagos, on Wednesday was to strategize on how to gradually change Nigerians' attitudes towards the coach and pave the way for his return to the job. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/sports/article02//indexn2_html?pdate=200210&ptitle=Plot%20Thickens%20To%20Reinstate%20Amodu Tools |
resh facts have emerged on what transpired at a recent secret meeting between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Acting President Goodluck Jonathan. Sunday Sun learnt that Obasanjo told Jonathan that he may have to pay a price by not contesting the 2011 presidential election if the ongoing effort to make him substantive president sails through. A source at the meeting said the parley was principally convened to chart the way forward politically for the country. Although the advice appears to be in the interest of Jonathan and the stability of the country, it was gathered that it was equally a ploy by Obasanjo to push through another agenda of imposing a candidate on the nation like he did in 2007. Already, the plot has rankled some politicians in the North who fear that a fresh attempt by the former leader to impose his candidate on the nation in the 2011 presidential contest might be in the works. The North and, indeed, other parts of the country are said to be blaming Obasanjo as the architect of the present political logjam in the country, because of the imposition of Yar’Adua on the nation in 2007. The present fear is hinged on alleged plan by the former president to line up an array of his candidates as likely Vice President to Jonathan in an arrangement that will also allow the same candidate succeed Jonathan in 2011. Sunday Sun gathered that the acting president is under intense pressure from the former president to consider one of his candidates. However, the move, which has leaked to northern leaders, is being resisted by the oligarchy in the region, which has also been advising Jonathan to be his own man and resist pressure from the former president. According to some of them working quietly to checkmate Obasanjo’s moves, any attempt to allow him impose a northern vice president who will succeed Jonathan in 2011 will be tantamount to allowing him get his aborted third term agenda through the back door for the second time. Some of the candidates Obasanjo is already pushing forward from the North East, according to sources, are his former Minister of Agriculture, Adamu Bello, the present Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, who also served under Obasanjo, the Gombe State Governor, Danjuma Goje or his Adamawa State counterpart, Murtala Nyako. The Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, is said to be reserved as a joker from the North West, if the position is eventually zoned there. Some groups are also backing former National Security Adviser to Obasanjo, Gen. Aliyu Gusau. Gusau, a presidential aspirant in 2007, is from the North West. The case for Nyako, it was learnt, was that since he is old, he would have to leave the stage in 2011, along with Jonathan, paving the way for the emergence of another candidate. But the dummy may not sell since Nyako is already campaigning for a second term in Adamawa. Obasanjo was also said to have told Jonathan that he should not expect to be vice president again in 2011, after serving as the Commander-in -Chief for close to 15 months. In the same vein, it was learnt that former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, and former boss of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, are also mounting pressure to be allowed to return home. The two, who are also confidants of Obasanjo, it was learnt, are canvassing the position that younger elements in their mould from the North should be considered for the plum job. However, some elements in the North stoutly against allowing the former President railroad the region into picking a candidate are already plotting to stall whatever move he makes in that direction. They are said to be adopting “a two-pronged approach of stalling Obasanjo’s plans and at the same time coming up with a viable alternative to whatever plan that the PDP Board of Trustees chairman might put forward.” Part of the plan, it was learnt, is for the northern oligarchy to queue behind a non-politician as deputy to Jonathan, while at the same time canvassing the need not to allow a politician be a deputy to Jonathan. The source, however, said: “We might be looking at the possibility of a man that has no ambition to contest the 2011 election because we feel that the election should be credible for the stability of the country. The person too must understand the workings of government and be able to speak up for the North in the present set up. “We need to shoot down the idea of using a politician if we want a credible election in 2011. Sincerely, we can do well without ambitious politicians supervising elections here. They don’t do sincere jobs,” the source said. It was further revealed that the names of a former minister, Gen. Ali Magoro, as well as that of former defence minister, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, were penciled down as possible deputy in the event of Jonathan becoming substantive President. “The two are people that are not interested in any election and they knows their onion. We know they are honest and love this country, and you can be sure they will do a good job. We will eventually settle for one of them after consultations,” our source added. Meanwhile, Obasanjo’s Abeokuta Hilltop home has become a beehive of activities as favour-seeking politicians flock to the mansion to seek the former President’s assistance. A source claimed “the place is already a Mecca of sorts for all manner of people seeking one favour or the other from Jonathan, like those who want to be in the next ECF, those who want to be governors and those seeking second term in the national assembly. The man is holding court and he seems to be enjoying it.” http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/features/newsonthehour/2010/feb/21/newsbreak-21-02-2010-001.htm |

AMODU SHUAIBU Super Eagles coach to the Angola 2010 Nations Cup, Shaibu Amodu, believes he is the most misunderstood Nigerian at the moment. In his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation, the coach was tasked to win a World Cup ticket for Nigeria and pick a semifinal ticket for the country at the Nations Cup. Amodu fulfilled his contractual obligations and wondered why Nigerians are still hard on him especially on the performance of the team at Angola 2010. The former Orlando Pirates coach said he had little time to prepare the Eagles to get the kind of results Nigerians expected from him. He explained that he inherited the Eagles in crisis shortly after German Berti Vogts fumbled at the Ghana 2008 Nations Cup where Nigeria lost at the quarterfinals stage. The Eagles were uncoordinated and uninspiring in Angola. The team defeated Benin, Mozambique, Zambia and Algeria but lost to two quality oppositions; Ghana and Egypt. Amodu told our correspondent that the events of Angola were caused by many things with the NFF and the Presidential Task Force also part of the blame. But why is Amodu having problems in spite of his achievements? The Edo-born tactician said, ”I am a professional and not a politician. I am clean. I face people and tell them the truth, especially when it comes to my job, football. ”People say I am arrogant but I wonder what they are talking about. I am very confident of myself because of my knowledge of the game. I know football and with due respect, I am an institution in this game. ”It is sad that politicians have taken over the game and everybody wants to tell you what to do about your job. ”Again, people say I snub. It is the pressure of the job. I am getting older and the responsibility is getting higher so you cannot expect me to behave or react the same way when I was coaching clubs in Nigeria. ”The expectations are high and there are many issues to manage to ensure one gets the desired results. People just misunderstand me and it hurts. I am just a realistic person. I say things as I see them because of my knowledge of the game.” Amodu narrated how the NFF humiliated him in Angola by taking two foreign coaches to the same hotel he was staying in Angola. He also stressed that there were many other distractions from the NFF and the PTF that affected the performance of Nigeria in the competition ”I felt bad especially because it was happening during a major competition and it is bound to affect one psychologically. The NFF officials even told me about the foreign coach issue during a meeting and I was not bothered. ”Players need concentration and motivation but these were difficult to achieve in Angola. After the first match, there were reports about NFF‘s plan to sack me. Imagine that,” he explained. The selection and tactics for the tournament was a major issue against Amodu but the former BCC Lions coach said the squad for the competition in Angola was the best for the country at that time. He stressed that he selected the final list just 24 hours to the end of the deadline given by the Confederation of Africa Football. Amodu said, ”I planned to take 32 players to Durban for training and then pick the final 23 later but I was suddenly asked to bring the final list even before training. I had to rely on the players I know and that was how we dropped the likes of Dele Adeleye and Ebenezer Ajilore. It was sad and painful but the job has to be done at that time. I sat with my crew for hours to draw the list and also defended it before the technical committee. ”People failed to realise that I inherited this team from the lowest ebb and had to do so much work to bring back the confidence. We were getting the results and there were complains again about many things. ”After winning the ticket to the World Cup people are still complaining but those things are not important because I am only answerable to the NFF and I have done all I was asked to do according to the content of my contract with the NFF. ”I must admit we could have done better in Angola but the pressure affected everybody. Look at the Ghanaian team, they came to enjoy themselves at the competition because there was no pressure on the team and they did so well and played in the final. ” On some ageing and injured players in the team, the coach explained that all the players got his nod on merit. ”I don‘t know why there are so many satanic insinuations. The failure of politicians in the country has crept to our football and they want to use football to win the hearts of the people. I have my own credibility and I want to win always so I have to select the best. ”Yakubu Aiyegbeni is doing so well in England scoring over 20 goals almost every season. He had injury problem and started playing and he was fit enough for the competition. Again there was so much noise on this player who is the most experienced striker in the team. He has good leadership qualities and he is a delight off every coach. ”Coaches know what they look out for and not just what people want to see. We all knew what people were saying about Garba Lawal but all the coaches were using him at that time. ”The injured players were certified fit for the competition. Yobo and Olofinjana were 75 per cent fit and I was okay with that because I believe they will get better as we go on. We expected a tough beginning but still believed we could play in the finals which we did. ”There was no understanding in the defence and the players failed to mark tight, especially against Egypt. I still believe we did our best to have won a medal. We deserve praises and not criticism.” In the World Cup qualifiers, the Eagles did not lose any match in the series. The team won the first six games back-to-back in the first round stage. In the final round the team won three and drew three to top the group with 12 points. Amodu hates to hear that he has been lucky with the Eagles as a coach especially after leading the team to win two World Cup tickets for Nigeria. He said,” How can one be lucky for 15 to 20 years? I know this job and I enjoy doing it. Nigeria is now 15th in the world and 2nd in Africa but I took over when the team was not even anywhere near the top at the global level. ”I have made progress with the team and it is wrong to say I was demoted or sacked. The team B issue was my idea and I am still in charge of all the national football teams as head coach. That is what my contract says and the NFF‘s technical committee chairman, Taiwo Ogunjobi also said this recently. ”Altogether, I have no regrets. If I am to do it all over again, I would still have done the same thing. I am trying to rest after all the tension of Angola and let me also state that the foreign coach thing is no big deal because I signed a contract to work with a foreign coach anytime the NFF is ready. ”I do give Dan Amokachi instructions on what to tell the players on the pitch. He is still younger and he was doing that well for the team. I carry all my assistants along. It is true I suggested to work with Stephen Keshi but I said that when the pressure was so much and I know we have worked together before and I still maintain that I won‘t mind having him in our technical crew.” http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art20100220073435 |
Treble-winning Egypt coach, Hassan Shehata, has named his price to lead the Super Eagles to the next World Cup in South Africa in June. Shehata, who initially seemed to be foot-dragging in making up his mind on the Super Eagles’ job has finally settled for the job but our source informed that the Egyptian was asking $2m(N300m) for the short period. The Pharaohs’ coach had sent a message to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), asking for a formal letter of invitation to be routed through the Egyptian FA. Shehata, Weekend SoccerStar gathered has shown renewed interest in the Eagles’ job because it would afford him an opportunity to have a feel of the World Cup for the first time. It was learnt that among other contenders for the job, Shehata might be the only coach asking for the least pay. Meanwhile, the NFF spokesman, Ademola Olajire, has confirmed that the football house has established contacts with the North African coach. “We have already contacted Shehata to inform him that he is one of the candidates to take over our national team,” Olajire confirmed. It would be recalled that the other four names shortlisted are the Swede Lars Largerback, Serbian Ratomir Djukovic, Frenchman Bruno Metsu and Englishman Peter Taylor. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/features/soccerstar/2010/feb/20/soccerstar-20-02-2010-002.htm |
It could be described as a taboo for siblings to marry one another, but Anthonia and Victor in desperate bid to secure UK visa decided to be known and addressed as husband and wife. On the fateful day, January 28, 2008, Anthonia dressed in a flowing white gown, marched to the Ojo marriage registry with Victor to be joined as husband and wife. This was done in a bid to convince the British High Commission to grant them a visiting visa since they can never meet the criteria needed to secure such visa. With the aid of a naval officer, (Kayode Olaniyan) they were able to secure forged documents, which portrayed them as highly placed individuals in Nigeria. The expectation was that the forged document would guarantee them a visiting visa, and they applied to spend two weeks in UK. To further convince the BHC, they went along with their wedding photograph, especially where they were cementing their ‘marriage’ with a kiss. Bubble however bust on February 16 when the British High Commission that was not aware the ‘couple’ is related by blood discovered that the bank statement presented was slightly altered. They alerted the police at the Special Fraud Unit, Ikoyi who in turn dispatched an officer to stand by for any possible arrest. Unknown to them that their game was up, the BHC invited the ‘couple’ for a final interview, where they would be issued a visa. They were careful to ensure that they appeared in uniformed attire so that the difference would not be spotted. Passersby commended their choice of spouse as they looked alike. In the visa section, holding each other closely they stepped into the interview room. The man meant to interview them enquired if they had a swell time on Sunday being Valentine. They were still waiting for their Visa to be issued when the police arrested them for forgery. They were arrested alongside the visa racketeer, Kayode Olaniyan who is alleged to have forged the entire document used for the act. The PRO SFU, CSP Akan, explained that when Victor discovered that the game was up, he shouted that the man (Kayode) who gave them the document was waiting outside to collect the balance as soon as they collect their approved visa. Unknown to Kayode, the game was up; he was arrested where he was waiting for the balance as soon as the deal clicks. In the course of interrogation, ready to vomit all the illegal things, they have done, Victor confessed that Anthonia was not his wife but his blood sister. Victor told Saturday Sun that he was tired of struggling to survive in Nigeria that was why he quickly grabbed the opportunity when Kayode promised to assist them to travel out. “He gave us instances of people who he had travelled as ‘couple’. He requested that we should pay N900,000 for the deal but we ended up paying N180,000 with the promise to pay up as soon as the visa is granted. “He promised that it was easier for couple to be granted visa so we quickly bought the idea to pose as couple. Part of the criteria was to get married, he arranged and we paid at the Ojo marriage registry. He also got some document which shows that I am a marine engineer, working in a company where I am paid more N300,000 monthly. I am an OND student of Lagos State Polytechnic where I am studying Banking and Finance. I am not a marine engineer and do not have an account in WEMA Bank. I have never attended Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, Victoria Island. My real names are Ayeye Victor Adejobi. My younger sister who posed as my wife is Antonia Ayeye. Nebelisa is not my father’s name at all. Kayode gave us the surname ‘Nebelisa’ and instructed that we should obtain the passport. He took us to Ado Ekiti where we obtained the passport in the name of ‘Nebelisa’.” When asked how he felt, kissing his sister, Victor said: “ It was disgusting but then I had no choice. I felt very bad knowing that it is an abomination, but because we wanted results, we had to comply. Take a look at the picture it will show that I was not comfortable with what I was doing.” Anthonia saw herself as an actress that was why she was very comfortable when it was time to kiss the bride. On why she decided to embark on such mission, Anthonia explained that she did it to better her life and would not hesitate do whatever it took to get to the promised land. “I am a stylist and my office is located at Onobotubon Street, off Asho Street, Benin. Victor is my blood brother from the same father and mother. We were introduced to Kayode by a family friend who claimed that he has assisted a lot of people to secure UK visa.” She explained that: “one of the ways to perfect the plan was to marry my brother, Victor. I saw that as a mere act, since I know that I am not married to my brother in real life. As agreed he took us to the marriage registry at Ojo, Lagos, to get married. At the end we were issued a marriage certificate. To perfect the business, he said we are to pay N900,000, but we managed to drop N180,000 as part payment. I am single and still searching ” Their rip-off games man, Olaniyan, was not satisfied with his pay in the Navy and he chose to go into visa racketeering to add to his monthly salary. With his experience in the Navy, he was able to reproduce documents used to facilitate his clients’ visa requests, which depict the applicants as having military background. Kayode who lives at No. 42 Olajumoke Street, Ikotun, Lagos, claimed that he joined the Nigerian Navy in 2005, and still works in the Navy. He explained that he knew his clients “through a family friend of mine, Tunde who told me that they were desperate to travel out of the country. I was the one who arranged for the forged marine documents and marine certificate of competency. I brought the sample and it was reproduced just like the original document. I then hired the services of a good forger, Isaac, who brought the bank statement, sales receipt and the other documents that were presented. I asked them to pay, N900,000 to process the document which they agreed to but I only collected N180,000 based on the agreement that I would receive the balance at the end of the business. I would have collected the remaining sum today if the visa was issued.” To the amazement of the British High Commission, Victor presented a document showing that he is working at the Durba Shipping (DNL). He also furnished the Commission with an internal memo approving 30 days annual leave, payment slip indicating a monthly salary of N310,000, letter of employment showing that he was employed as 2nd Engineer with effect from May 12, 2003 and a letter of introduction from the company. Victor further gave the Commission a certificate of Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, Victoria Island Lagos. By Azu Akanwa Coordinator of Ijaw Monitoring Group, IMG, Comrade Joseph Evah has described the media campaign by some presenters and public opinion analysts in the media against the wife of the Acting President, Dame Patience Jonathan as an attempt to paint the Ijaw people as people without culture, custom, tradition and conscience. Some analysts had alleged that before the Vice President was made Acting President by the Senate, his wife, Patience, had already redesigned the office of the First Lady, Hajia Turai Yar’Adua, to her own taste to take over the office as Acting First Lady. In a statement signed by Evah on behalf of IMG, the group condemned the media network “put in place in Nigeria and abroad by enemies of Nigeria to raise false alarm and incite the public against genuine efforts to find solution to the man-made constitution at crisis. “No Ijaw person will make frantic effort to dispossess a fellow human being of her position with the aim that the sick will not return alive. It is not part of Ijaw way of life, it is not in our character,” the IMG boss said He said people sponsoring such rumours were wicked. “We are surprised to watch strange people on television and discussions on radio to pollute the minds of Nigerians. We know their target is the Acting President. The wife of the Acting President has not redesigned Hajia Turai’s office to her own taste since last year to occupy it. “We are aware of a propaganda team set-up in Nigeria and abroad by the cabal to publish falsehood against the Acting President and his wife. “We wish to alert the public that fake bank statement of accounts and non-existing bank transactions as well as false business dealings linking the Vice President’s wife are being put together to blackmail the Acting President and his wife. “We wish to raise the alarm now so that when such evil plots surface, the public will know the game plan of the cabal and ignore such publications and we also advise media owners not to allow their organisation to be used as platform for such evil agenda.” By Azu Akanwa Coordinator of Ijaw Monitoring Group, IMG, Comrade Joseph Evah has described the media campaign by some presenters and public opinion analysts in the media against the wife of the Acting President, Dame Patience Jonathan as an attempt to paint the Ijaw people as people without culture, custom, tradition and conscience. this is a sad news for this great man of God |
My pastor brought this up in service on sunday and i found it really interesting and revealing. The popular phrase "seeing is believing" is wrong afterall - you want me to prove it? okay follow me on this - what is the definition of 'believe'? the dictionary defines it as "to have confidence in the truth, the existence, or the reliability of something, although without absolute proof that oneis right in doing so"example: i believe it will rain tomorrow - but it has not rained yet. You are yet to see the rain - in other words, you enage in the act of believing only when you haven't got physical proof available to you - in other words, when you say you believe, it is because what you know has not been proven physically - when you've seen something with your unclothed eyes, that is no longer 'believe' that is 'knowledge' you know for sure that this is what you are seeing - nobody can say 'i believe i'm a woman' because that means you have doubts in your mind as to wether you are a woman or not - you know for sure that this is what your gender is - so peeps, next time you hear the saying 'seeing is believing' just be aware it's not true ![]() |
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that they have opened talks with Hassan Shehata with the aim of hiring him to lead Nigeria to the World Cup. “We have already contacted Shehata to inform him that he is one of the candidates to take over our national team,” NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire said. “We nominated four other coaches for the team’s managerial seat. We will sit down with each one of them in the coming few days.” The four other names on the list are Swede Lars Lagerback, Serbian Ratomir Djukovic, Frenchman Bruno Metsu and Englishman Peter Taylor. Nigeria is searching for a new boss after the sacking of Shaibu Amodu following the Super Eagles’ third-place finish at the 2010 African Cup of Nations in Angola. Nigeria has been drawn in Group B at the tournament, along with Argentina, South Korea and Greece. Meanwhile, Nigeria football officials insist they will not spread their net beyond their preferred list of coaches as they continue their hunt for a foreign manager. Since sacking Shaibu Amodu and revealing their wishlist, the NFF has been rejected at lightning speed, with hopes of landing a big name fast turning into a mirage. Louis Van Gaal and Giovanni Trapattoni had already ruled themselves out of the Nigerian job. It was announced that Guus Hiddink would take charge of Turkey, while Peter Taylor was named as Bradford manager. Former Senegal boss Bruno Metsu, ex-Ghana coach Ratomir Dujkovic and Egypt’s Hassan Shehata are currently committed to Qatar, Serbia and Egypt respectively. But NFF technical committee chairman, Taiwo Ogunjobi, told BBC Sport they are still confident of naming a manager from their list of preferred candidates by the end of the month. “We are not bothered by speculation and reports in the media about these coaches pulling out on us,” Ogunjobi told BBC Sport on Wednesday. “So far there has not been any official word from these coaches or their agents, so we cannot respond to speculation or rumours. We are not distracted and remain steadfast that a new coach will be named at the end of the month by the NFF.” German trio Winfried Shaefer, Klaus Topmmoeller, Jurgen Klinsmann, the Swede Lars Lagerback, Dragoslav Stepanovic, as well as Liverpool legend John Barnes are names dominating the Nigerian media. Yet, Ogunjobi remains adamant that the man to replace Shaibu Amodu as coach of Nigeria will emerge from the original shortlist. “We have been reading about all these names in the media but they remain the product of the media,” said Ogunjobi. “The coaches we shortlisted are the names we are working on and other coaches are figments of the media. “We can’t be talking about such a sensitive thing in the media as it will be highly disrespectful to the coaches involved. I guess our decision to stay out of gossip columns is responsible for the media speculations but we will get the right man.” The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is expected to name a replacement for sacked coach Shaibu Amodu on 28 February in Abuja. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/features/sportsonthehour/2010/feb/19/sportsbreak-19-02-2010-001.htm |
John Utaka has accused Harry Redknapp of wrecking his Premier League career. The Nigeria international has emerged from two-and-a-half years of under achievement to finally begin to show his worth. Utaka is revelling in the central striking position he has longed to fill since his July 2007 arrival. Two goals and two assists in his last four appearances are the result of Avram Grant‘s decision to restore the 28-year-old to his natural role. His most recent contribution was setting up Quincy Owusu-Abeyie for the opener in Saturday’s 4-1 mauling of Southampton. It was Redknapp who converted Utaka into a right winger – a decision the £7m recruit is convinced has damaged his Fratton Park progress and cost him his Nigerian place. Now he‘s back in familiar striking territory. And he insists under the right management he is flourishing. He said, “I honestly think I can show what I can do as a central striker. “That is where I want to play. I can‘t give my best from playing on the flanks. “In France I scored hat-tricks in successive games against Lyon and Lens as a striker. I played most my games in that position. Harry knew my role because he came to watch me – but he changed it to play me wide.” ‘He told me ”I want to use you on the flanks because of your speed”. ‘I wasn‘t really happy, but sometimes you cannot challenge the opinions of the manager. ‘Sometimes I really should have said something. ‘In some games when I didn‘t really perform well, it was a combination of the whole thing because I wasn‘t happy. ‘That‘s because on the wing is not my position, I‘m short of what I am supposed to do. ‘When you play down the middle, you have a 100-per-cent chance to commit defenders. When they make mistakes, it‘s bye-bye. ‘I can‘t play the same way on the wing because I am limited in actually what I can do. ‘On the wing is okay, but you want to score, you want to give assists, you want to have options. ‘I‘m glad Avram Grant sees me as a central striker. ‘Before, nobody knew what position I was playing right-back, right midfield, goalkeeper. ‘For me it‘s not about confidence, it‘s about opportunities. ‘And as a striker, you can torment people.‘ Utaka has scored just nine goals in 75 games since his costly switch to Fratton Park. Yet the majority of those outings have been on the right wing, while almost half have come from the bench. Even when Redknapp departed, he started just two games under Tony Adams. As for his time under Paul Hart, Utaka was named in the starting line- up on just six occasions. Now he‘s enjoying something of a rejuvenation under Grant, culminating with an instant recall against Southampton following injury. On that occasion he received the nod ahead of Frederic Piquionne to partner Aruna Dindane in attack. Now armed with his new-found confidence, Utaka is convinced he can start producing the goalscoring goods. He added: ‘People will say ”they paid £7m for him, he earns £80,000 per week and he‘s playing like that”. ‘But they judge you for the wrong reasons. ‘The manager is now playing me centrally and people are realising what they thought about me was not true. ‘Maybe playing as a winger is the reason why I wasn‘t in the Nigeria squad for the Africa Cup of Nations. ‘A couple of games I played up front and I scored goals. When I do that I do well. ‘I‘m very confident I can score goals now and maybe I can get 15 or 16 by the end of the season? http://www.punchontheweb.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201002192154096 |
THE Federal Government, on Wednesday, uncovered a plot against Acting President Goodluck Jonathan by some elements said to be aggrieved about his emergence. The office of the Acting President has confirmed that there is, indeed, a plot to discredit the acting president and pull down his administration. Besides the anger in some quarters over his emergence, some forces were also said to be aggrieved about the decision of the acting president to cancel the proposed sale of oil wells, in another oil bid round that would have empowered some key figures in the polity. Sources in Abuja told the Nigerian Tribune that some top security operatives had uncovered a plot by a group said to be “utterly disturbed and bitter” by the acting president’s resolve to cancel the oil bid round. The bidding was to take place last week, but the acting president stopped it. Sources said that some of those who lost out in the bidding round were already being investigated to know their involvement in the alleged plot. A source said that some of those who lost out in the planned oil well deal included two former governors, who had planned to take one oil well each, two ministers and a presidential aide, who is said to be interested in three oil wells and fronting for three foreign interests: a Taiwanese, a Chinese and a Middle East company. It was gathered that some highly connected persons had concluded arrangements to ensure that certain persons grab some lucrative oil wells through the bid round and that those who had already targeted some wells were bitter that Dr. Jonathan cancelled the bid. Sources said that a group working in and outside the government met on Monday night at a location in Abuja and resolved to deal with the acting president for “daring to cancel the oil bid round.” It was gathered that a tape recording of the discussions at the said meeting was already in possession of the government, which is already investigating those linked to the plot. Sources said that the discussion at the said meeting dwelt on the anger of the group and the ways by which it planned to deal with the acting president. One of those involved in the meeting was said to have said in exasperation: “We have to deal with him; we have to kill him.” It was gathered that one of the decisions was to deliberately distort information about the emerging administration of the acting president in a way that would portray him as a spendthrift and an administrator who was eager to loot the treasury. A source said that the group plotting against the acting president had been linked with unfounded allegations that the acting president had spent N300 billion since November 23, 2009, when President Yar’Adua travelled out of Nigeria for medical treatment. A source said that the group had also been spreading rumours that the lawmakers, who facilitated the passage of the motion that empowered the vice-president as acting president, were financially mobilised. “We have watched these people and we have to allow the operatives to do their work. They are responsible for the lot of distortions in the land. Whereas the information we have is that those opposed to the emergence of the acting president were mounting pressures on senators not to budge and were making promises of huge financial rewards, they want to turn the information around and turn things on their heads. “The government cannot go to sleep over this,” a source said on Wednesday. ‘Misguided elements want to pull me down’ The office of the acting president, Dr. Jonathan, has alerted the nation to a grand plan by some people to pull his government down. In a statement, on Wednesday, the spokesman of the acting president, Mr. Ima Niboro, said the enemies of Jonathan had voted billions of naira to fight the acting president. The statement entitled “of N300 Billion and other absurd tales!”, read: “Today, the first instalment of the planned and well coordinated media onslaught against the Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, was published in a national newspaper” [not the Nigerian Tribune], “alleging that he (the Acting President) approved the expenditure of a whopping N300 billion, for both pro-Yar'Adua rallies and those that were in his interest.” The report also claimed that members of the National Assembly were bribed to do their patriotic duty to save the nation from drift. “It can be recalled that a few days ago, there was an allegation of a purported release of two billion US dollars from the Excess Crude Account to governors to facilitate their endorsement of Jonathan as Acting President. “While we commend the Chairman of the Governor’s Forum, Dr. Bukola Saraki, for dealing satisfactorily with that allegation in a rejoinder, it is interesting to note that two billion dollars translate to roughly N300 billion. There is, therefore, no question that both allegations emanate from the same source. “We know those behind these publications. Nigerians have come to know them as careerists in power. But we see them as misguided elements determined to exceed their call of duty and play God over the affairs of the Nation. “They are wicked and ungodly and their time is up! Never, again, must we allow our nation to be strangulated by a privileged few who will rather fiddle with our common wealth while the nation burns. “We are aware that they have set aside a huge war chest in billions of naira to bring the Jonathan Acting Presidency to disrepute by any means possible. It is, therefore, hardly surprising that as cunny as these allegations obviously sound, they still get mention in our media space. We are fully on the tracks of this so-called group; this unfortunate band of liars. In the fullness of time, they shall be brought to book. “We find no need to dignify the N300 billion allegation with a response. What is more, those selling this lie are careful to state that the money was procured from a certain businessman, who is to be settled in a matter of weeks by “a huge oil contract.” “Three hundred billion naira sourced from one man at a go? We demand to know who this businessman is. Anyone that keeps liquid cash of N2 billion dollars to bribe people belongs only in jail! Huge oil contract? Maybe Nigerians need to ask those who have been involved in handing out such contracts how such quid pro quo deals are done. “Let me use this medium to reiterate that we shall not be deterred by campaigns of calumny or any other method whatsoever in our collective efforts to reform this nation, and change our ways of doing things once and for all. The acting president is determined, and he is counting on the total support of all Nigerians”, the statement concluded. http://www.tribune.com.ng/index.php/front-page-news/1511-fresh-plot-to-kill-jonathan-uncovered-2-ministers-2-ex-govs-implicated-misguided-elements-want-to-pull-me-down-acting-president.html |

if we look at our world today it seems most of the time, people who do good tend to be the ones who go home early - say for example, - Diana, MKO, Michael Jackson, Jesus Christ etc while evil people e.g. Idi Amin, Mugabe etc live longer - why does God allow things to be this way? ![]() |
John Mikel Obi is convinced his bad-boy reputation has gone for good after two years without a red card to his name. Midfielder Obi's early seasons at Stamford Bridge were blighted by four red cards - including one in the Carling Cup final victory over Arsenal in 2007 - and 27 yellow cards. But the Nigeria international has only picked up two bookings so far this season and has not seen red since January 2008 against Everton. Obi puts the dramatic improvement in his disciplinary record down to adapting to the English game. "English football is always something crazy and, when you come into the Premier League, you must adapt to it somehow," said Obi. "I guess the timing of those tackles was the area I had to improve and I think I've dealt really well with it. "I think it was the hunger I had for the games, the enthusiasm, that meant I did not know how to restrict myself from going into tackles at the wrong moment. "It took me a bit of time to get used to things but now it has been two years with no red cards and I hope I can continue like that. I think it was the hunger I had for the games, the enthusiasm, that meant I did not know how to restrict myself from going into tackles at the wrong moment. Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder Jon Mikel Obi "I always try to keep my aggression but not get booked. "But when you play in the position I play, sometimes you have to commit because the team will be in danger if you don't." Obi was the last of Chelsea's four Africa Cup of Nations players to return to England last month. His Nigeria side were beaten in the semi-finals of the competition but won their third-place play-off 1-0 against Algeria. Obi was a 78th-minute substitute in that game but he has slotted straight back into the Chelsea side since he returned, including a fine performance against Arsenal. He was outstanding against Cardiff in Chelsea's 4-1 FA Cup fifth-round victory on Saturday and is now hoping for a hat-trick of triumphs in the competition. Obi has curbed his indiscipline Chelsea face the winners of the replay between Manchester City and Stoke in the last eight. Obi has won the trophy in two of his three full seasons at Stamford Bridge - being singled out for impressive performances in both the 2007 and 2009 finals. "I want to do well because I always want to win," added Obi. "But maybe the final feels a bit more special and a good performance there shows people how much you want to win the trophy. "The game is the really special part of the day if you get to the FA Cup final. "That's what leads you to winning the trophy and everything else comes from that - the build-up and the celebrations just make it more special. "I think playing the FA Cup, whatever round you are in, always feels very special." http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/africa/8520529.stm |
Skipper Nwankwo Kanu is bitter that Coach Shuaibu Amodu may have scuttled his childhood dream to score a goal in the Africa Cup of Nations. The Super Eagles captain is not hiding his annoyance over what he described as an unfortunate decision by Amodu, who ensured that he sat out of the crucial matches played by the Nigerian team at the recently concluded Angola 2010 Nations Cup. Kanu has been unlucky in all the six Cup of Nations he played for Nigeria. However, the Portsmouth of England’s player thinks his dream to score a goal in the biggest African football fiesta may have gone by the wind, while he also feels that coach Amodu has ended his ambition to win a Nations Cup gold medal. “In as much as I should not give up any hope in whatever I do as a player, I think it’s time to face the realities because my Cup of Nations’ dreams may have been over now. “My main regret as a Nigerian and captain of the senior national team is that I never scored any goal for the country in the Africa Cup of Nations. I’m afraid the Angola Cup of Nations may have been my last for Nigeria, and it will be sad if I had to retire without scoring in the competition,” Kanu said in Luanda after the third place match against Algeria. Worse still, the Eagles gangling skipper, whose goals helped Nigeria’s Dream Team to win the Atlanta ‘96 Olympics soccer gold, has no Nations Cup title in his medals’ cabinet. “I’m unhappy about how things went for me in Angola. It would have been great to play for my country and scored at least one goal at the Nations Cup, but this remains a dream, no thanks to coach Amodu, who benched me throughout our campaign,” he lamented. Kanu said it was strange for him to warm the bench throughout a competition of that magnitude. “I think Amodu and his assistants knew why they treated me as like that in Angola. I felt terrible not having enough playing time in the Nations Cup. But I do not understand why I was not even played from the opening game against Egypt.” Recalling how he fared with the Eagles during their training tour of Duban before they arrived the Cup of Nations venue, Kanu said: “I trained very well hard and performed well against Zambia in a friendly before the tournament. “However, I could not leave the camp with annoyance or cause disharmony in the team because I’m the captain and the younger players were looking on to me. What would they say? That the captain is fighting the coach? That’s what put me in the difficult situation.” The former Ajax and Arsenal player concluded by saying that his love for fatherland, Nigeria remains intact despite the poor treatment metted out to him in Angola. “Many people have been asking me if I was tired, whether I won’t play again. But, I keep telling them that I’m still playing and will only think of retirement after the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.” Comments (1) http://thepmnews.com/2010/02/18/amodu-ruined-my-dream-%e2%80%94kanu |
Vice President Goodluck Jonathan’s ascension to the position of acting president of the country has been described as a divine elevation and intervention in the affairs of the country by God. Declaring this in an interview with P.M.NEWS, General Evnagelist of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Worldwide, Prophet (Dr.) Kayode Abiara, said God loves Nigeria so well and would not stand by and watch the country disintegrate. “Jonathan’s elevation to the position of acting President is a divine intervention in the affairs of Nigeria by God. God loves this country so well that He would not stand by and watch it disintegrate. “I congratulate Jonathan on his elevation and wish him God’s guidance and protection,” Prophet Abiara stated. The CAC General Evangelist described Jonathan as a quiet, good man who must be supported by all to succeed. He advised the new acting president to seek the face of God in his new position and work in cooperation with the country’s elders to move it forward. “The acting President must act fast to solve the Niger Delta crisis and continue the implementation of the seven-point agenda of ailing President Umar Yar’Adua. He must reject advice from evil people and his goal must be to satisfy the people,” he counseled. Prophet Abiara also seized the opportunity to inform Nigerians of the programme of the church entitled: ‘Jesus, The Worker of Miracles, Signs and Wonders,’ coming up on Friday, 26 February at the Holy Prayer Mountain of Joseph Ayo Babalola, Odo Owa, Kwara State. Prayers will be offered for salvation, deliverance, businessmen, travelers, students traders and the nation, he disclosed.
