IbrahimB:
Not playing Kanu was another show of Amodu's incompetence. The same Kanu won "man of the match" in the 3rd place game against Algeria and in fact, played a pivotal role in securing the bronze medal. He brought an extra dimension to the midfield, which was sorely missing when Mikel played.

I remember it was said the same Kanu, dazzled everyone during the pre-tournament training sessions. There was absolutely no reason to keep benching him. If he was only invited, just to warm the bench, then it's an insult to a player of his pedigree. A younger player could as well have been invited in his stead to 'gain some Nation's Cup experience'.

The only reason I see, why he was benched, was to make Nigerians think Amodu is in control, because he can at least be said, to have been able to 'subdue' the captain of the National team to the bench. A way of showing who's in charge.

I must add, that the way Kanu had kept his cool and not rebelled is most commendable. Pity though, he couldn't get a Nation's Cup goal.

SportsKanu Blasts Amodu by woye77(op): 12:32am On Feb 09, 2010
February 8, 2010

Super Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu, has tongue-lashed sacked coach Shaibu Amodu for keeping him on the bench at the just-concluded Nations Cup in Angola.

“It’s so strange,” he began in an interview with MTNfootball.com “I have always told the coach that I was not there to look and carry babies. When you talk of Nigeria, you hear Kanu and I still play for my club. I did not know why I was in Angola and I did not play. If you are starting me, it means I have to come in.

“But I do not understand why I was not even coming. There is no reason why I cannot come in and play. In South Africa, I trained very well, against Zambia in a friendly before the tournament, I was the man of the match. Even in training you could see that I’m there and I can play. There was no excuse.

“But what I cannot do is to cause disharmony in the team because I’m the captain and even the younger players would look at me and say the captain is fighting the coach, but the truth is that it was very strange for me.

“People have to go back and ask Amodu and Amokachi what was the reason because they call the shots and I’m still a player. I had to show a good example to the rest of the team.

“I had to show good example to the rest of the team. I had to keep my head especially when we lost the first game and everybody wanted to kill us. What was the reason? Was it that he was not fit? Or that he can no longer play?”

He admitted that his greatest regret in the national team was not winning a Nations Cup title even as he added that he felt disappointed not scoring a goal in all the six editions he featured.

“It would have been great to have on my CV that I scored a goal at the Nations Cup, but it did not happen.

PoliticsYar’adua Must Not Return To Aso Rock —pastor Bakare by woye77(op): 10:51pm On Feb 08, 2010
Pastor Tunde Bakare of The Latter Rain Assembly has said that there is no more vacancy for ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua in Aso Rock.

According to Bakare, who is a member of the Save Nigeria Group, “whenever Yar’Adua is brought back from Saudi Arabia, whether dead or alive, he should be taken to Katsina, since Aso Rock, the seat of power, cannot be inhabited by an incapacitated President.”

He said Vice President Goodluck Jonathan should be sworn-in as President, adding that events have since overtaken Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution which provides that the president should transmit a letter to the National Assembly that he is embarking on a medical trip and so his deputy should be sworn as acting president.

He said the National Assembly should set in motion the machinery to swear-in Jonathan as President in accordance with Section 146 of the 1999 Constitution.

According to Section 146 (subsection 1) of the constitution: “The Vice President shall hold the office of President if the office of President becomes vacant by reason of death or resignation, impeachment, permanent incapacity or the removal of the President from office for any other reason in accordance with Section 143 or 144 of this constitution.”

Bakare also lambasted Vincent Ogbulafor, the national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, saying he was a clown, for praising Jonathan for his steadfastness in playing the role of acting president.

He likened PDP to ostrich which is a big for nothing bird that lacks brain and has no touch with reality.

He said the PDP is full of clowns and court jesters and has all of the characteristics of the ostrich, adding, “we are not religious imbeciles. We must speak against corruption and injustice in the country.”

President Yar’Adua has been away from the country since 23 November last year when he travelled to Saudi Arabia to treat his ailment at King Faisal Hospital in Jeddah.

His long absence has heated up the polity, with many, including the Minister of Information and Communications, Dora Akunyili, elder statesmen, Guild of Editors, Governors Forum, calling on him to quit.

Also, the Action Congress (AC) has stressed that the country is on life support since its President, Umaru Yar’Adua, is in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Saudi Arabia.

The party therefore urged more Nigerians to speak up against the continuous absence of the President and the political gimmicks played by members of his kitchen cabinet including the Attorney-General of the Federation, Michael Aaondoakaa(SAN).

The party, through a release sent by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, also urged the Federal Executive Council to jettison its earlier decision that the president’s illness has not made him incapable of ruling the country effectively.

AC further demanded that the President should immediately transmit a letter to the National Assembly saying he is proceeding on medical vacation so as to make his deputy, Goodluck Jonathan act on his behalf.

“The fact that the President has yet to fully recover after 77 days of intensive medical treatment is enough for FEC to stop embarrassing themselves and the nation by saying the President is in ‘good’ stead to carry out his official duties.

“Once the FEC acts, the National Assembly must move quickly to set up a medical panel to determine whether or not the President can continue in office,” the party stressed, calling on the federal lawmakers to help the nation’s democracy by immediately starting the process of amending Sections 144 and 145 of the Constitution to remove any ambiguities and also to strip ministers of that critical role of making a key decision on the man who appointed them into office.

Commending various Nigerians who have risen against the action of the President and his men, the party tasked more courageous Nigerians to speak up on this issue.

It further asked Nigerians to resist any attempt by any individual or group to truncate the country’s democracy. “We believe that it is only through the kind of challenges we currently face, and the manner in which they are resolved, that our democracy can grow,” the party said.

The party reminded Nigerians of how it had maintained that President Yar’Adua was not capable of ruling the country even before he disappeared from the shores of the country. It added that the consequence of the inefficiency is being witnessed by millions of citizens.

The party emphasized: “When we said, in one of our numerous appraisals of the state of the nation, that the ship of state was adrift and that the Captain was in a deep slumber - and that was even when President Umaru Yar’Adua was fully in the saddle - we never imagined that the ship would drift this far and that the sea would become this turbulent.

“Since the President left these shores on Nov. 23rd 2009, our nation has faced perhaps the toughest test yet in its recent history, while the survival of our young democracy has been threatened more than at any other time since our return to civilian rule in 1999.

“Times like this call for rare courage, and they demand men and women who can rise to the occasion and lift their country out of the doldrums. Challenges are part of life, and the way and manner they are tackled make all the difference.

“We have people like Information Minister Dora Akunyili, who as the mouth piece of the federal executive council once told the nation and the whole world that the President was indeed recovering well and would soon return home, when they had neither seen nor heard from the President since he left the country last year.

“It is OK that some of these people are now seeing the light and are echoing the same stand long advocated by our party, the AC! They are welcome”, the party stated.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has tasked those it described as President Umaru Yar’Adua’s handlers to save the country and allow Vice President Goodluck Jonathan function in acting capacity pending the return of the ailing President.

The Guild, in a communiqué it issued at the end of its expanded committee meeting on Friday, last week, lamented the current state of the nation and advised against politicizing the President’s health challenge.

The guild further condemned the recent Jos crisis while blaming it on the failure of security agencies in the country and government at various levels.

“The NGE aligns with stakeholders and international bodies like the European Union to demand that perpetrators of the violence be brought to justice,” it stated.

On the allegation by the True Face of Lagos group that N183 million was spent on newspaper editors and media houses by the Lagos State government, the Guild described as spurious and malicious the allegations by the group.

The Guild urged that advertising budgets for media houses should not be confused with graft.

It therefore challenged the group to come out in the open and substantiate its claims.

The Guild, while speaking on the proposed Nigerian Press Council bill, acknowledged the need for regulation.

It however, rejected any effort to have a government-regulated Nigerian Press Council. The Guild also restated its opposition to the criminal libel law and suggested that the law be repealed, like it was done in Ghana.

On the proposed registration of journalists as contained in the Press Council bill, through the Nigerian Union of Journalists, the Guild said it would be guided by Section 39 of the Constitution of the country, which conforms with the provisions of the African Charter on Human Rights, that the right to seek employment and to disseminate information should not be discriminatory.

“The registration of journalists would be tantamount to licensing journalists, which, due to the precarious nature in our environment, should be discouraged,” the Guild noted, while rejecting the legislation of salaries and wages as proposed in the bill.

The body further condemned the effort of members of the House of Representatives to frustrate the passage of the FOI bill, an action it sees as deliberate. It said it would keep a watch-list of members in the House who have elected to deny the people their right to know.

petres_007:
@woye77,

You sound like you're new here. If not, did you miss all the threads on the old and new covenants?

The law you quoted from Leviticus 15 is a part of the first covenant God had with Israel (not with Nigeria or any other Gentile country like our greedy pastors of today would have us believe grin) which ended with the death of Christ. Christians live under a new dispensation and have a new covenant with God, brokered by Christ now, and not Moses (who himself was only pointing forward to Christ).

Its because of this new covenant that me and you (believing you're not a jew) can have a relationship with God, as the first covenant was exclusive to Israel - Abraham's physical descendants through Isaac and Jacob. There are plenty of scriptures on this. Here's one of my favourites (Ephesians 2):

11 Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called the uncircumcision by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands--

12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near in the blood of Christ.

14 For he is our peace, who has made us both one, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility,

15 by abolishing in his flesh the law of commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace,

16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby bringing the hostility to an end.

How does this answer your question? Simple! Christians are not required to keep the law of Moses (we're actually warned very seriously, not to dig up anything from it). So whether its this one you brought up (women entering "God's temple"wink during their period, or anyother from old covenant. We have no business keeping them!

And besides, under the new covenant, there is no building or tent-like temple of God anymore to which we can go and expect to find the presence of God or worship etc.

Err, Try studying the new testament for your self and pay close attention. I promise it won't bite, too much grin grin grin grin grin
@petre_007 thanx so much - your reply is quite revealing and detailed - does this law apply to the payment of tithes too?

Nigeria are in the final stages of talks with Paraguay for an international friendly on March 3, a top official of the Nigeria Football Federation has told KickOffNigeria.com.

Discussions are also said to be going on with Japan for a game in May.

The Super Eagles were due to play Portugal in a friendly in Durban on the same date, but that arrangement fell through and now the Nigeria federation have turned to the South Americans.

"Discussions have been taking place and we can say that we are 70 percent there," the official said.

"And we are also talking to Japan for a friendly in May."

Van Gaal rejects Nigeria

Dutch coach Louis van Gaal has ruled himself out of the Nigeria job, saying he would see out his two-year contract with German club Bayern Munich.

It means that the former Barcelona coach, who joined Munich on July 1, 2009, will not be available until 2011.

Van Gaal was one of six candidates shortlisted by the Nigeria Football Federation after a meeting last Friday which ended with Shuaibu Amodu being demoted to coach a team of locally-based players.

But the Dutchman, who has been linked with the Nigeria job since 2005, says he is unavailable at this time.

"I have a contract and I'll respect it. It's not the first time that Nigeria show interest in me, but Bayern Munich represents a great challenge. I think that Bayern will be my last club, after that I'll go to Portugal and there I'll wait a nice offer to guide a great national team," van Gaal said.

The Bayern coach is one of two high profile candidates shortlisted for the post. The other, current Russia coach Guus Hiddink, is also expected to rule himself out of the running in the coming days.

However, one high-profile name who was not shortlisted, but who is believed to be keen on the Nigeria post is Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trappatoni.

The Italian is said to have a clause in his contract that allows him to walk away from the Republic job anytime until March 10.

Despite being demoted to coaching the Super Eagles Team B, consisting of locally based players, Shuaibu Amodu will be in charge of the Super Eagles for a friendly game on March 3 with a yet to be determined opponent.

A top NFF source told KickOffNigeria.com that the team would consist of a combination of local players and fringe foreign-based players.

"The Technical Committee are expected to provide a shortlist of three to the board by the end of February, but the time is too short for us to appoint him and let him take charge of the friendly on March 3.

"So Amodu will be in charge for that game. But the team will be some home-based players, and a few foreign-based players who will be given a chance to stake their claims for places in the team for the World Cup," the NFF official, who did not want to be named, said.

No opponent has yet been chosen for the March 3 date, the only FIFA window before the end of the season, after a proposed move to play Portugal fell through.

"The Technical Committee are working on some opponents and will report back to the board at the next meeting," our source said.

The current situation is bound to lead to further confusion as to the role of Shuaibu Amodu going forward.

In a matter of hours, the handover drama in the Presidency that has lasted more than two and half months would come to an end. Son-in-law to President Umaru Yar’Adua and governor of Bauchi State, Mallam Isa Yugua, gave the hint on the heels of reports that more Ministers are falling in line behind the Minister of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akunyili, whose memorandum to the Executive Council of the Federation (EXCOF) has left it in disarray.

Yuguda told journalists in Abuja in the early hours of Saturday that Vice President Goodluck Jonathan would assume office as Acting President from this week in line with the decision of the court, the resolution of the Senate and the demand of Eminent Persons Group among so many others.

He explained that the 1999 Constitution did not make provision to take care of the likelihood of a situation where the President is so incapacitated that he cannot write the National Assembly.

Yuguda said the decision of the governors asking Yar’Adua to handover to Jonathan should be commended because it was a realistic and pragmatic as well as creating a window for genuine dialogue among Nigerians on the vexed issue.
He, however, stressed that the issue of Yar’Adua transmitting a letter to the National Assembly that would have paved way for Jonathan to act as president in his absence had been blown out of proportion.

“You would recall that the Forum of Governors met over 30 days ago in Abuja during which we deliberated on the health of the President and later addressed the media. As at then, we did not know that he was going to be away for this long because none of us is God and we are not in a position to determine the health of anyone. But we provided the way forward,” he said.
The Bauchi governor explained that taking a critical look at the ailing President today in comparison to the appraisal of the reaction of some Nigerians to the illness, it would seem as if some of those involved do not have blood flowing in their veins.
“I feel frustrated that we are not building the required type of image we need as a country as we end up making our nation a laughing stock,” he said.

Commenting on last month’s ethno-religious crisis in Jos, Yuguda said one way of nipping such unfortunate crisis in the bud was to ensure a strict adherence to law and order, stressing that anyone found to have committed offence should be severely punished no matter his status.
He called on the National Assembly to urgently enact a law to resolve once and for all the issues surrounding indigene/settler in the country, saying that every Nigerian should be free to choose where to be called his home irrespective of where he hails from.
Yuguda further said religious leaders who hide under the vocation of preaching to incite the people for their selfish ends should be arrested and prosecuted, adding that the activities of the political class should also be monitored with a view to checking their excesses and if found wanting, they should be severely dealt with.

“Pastors hiding under the canopy of religion to incite the people must be denied access to places of worship. Any Islamic cleric that hides under the canopy of religion to incite the people and cause crisis should be denied access to places of worship. Such people should be rejected by the society because God does not go where there is crisis.”
Sunday Sun however authoritatively learnt that some of the hawks in the cabinet, who had ensured that Yar’Adua did not hand over to Jonathan, have tactically began moves to take strategic positions in a ‘President Jonathan’ administration.
One of the strategies of the hawks is to worm their way into Jonathan’s favour by telling him they had all along been on his side and that they were actually the ones funding the organizations that had staged some of the demonstrations urging Yar’Adua to communicate his medical vacation to the National Assembly to enable the Vice President assume office as President in acting capacity.

It was gathered that the prodigal ministers’ group was actually behind a team that took a middle course of the road in the address they presented to the National Assembly urging the Federal legislature to resolve the matter believing that both the Senate and the House of Representatives were going to remain satisfied with their initial resolution in which the Senate summoned the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to brief it.
Unfortunately for the hawks in the Presidency, the Senate took a hardliner position, insisting that the ailing Yar’Adua should communicate his medical vacation letter to the National Assembly in line with Section 145 of the Constitution.

If I die I die
•Akunyili opens up on Yar’Adua memo
By Pade Olapuju padepoju@yahoo.com
Sunday, February 7, 2010

When Information and Communications Minister, Prof Dora Akunyili, presented her memorandum asking her colleagues to wake up to their responsibility to the Nigerian nation, tempers flared and voices were raised. Some of the ministers rose from their seats so their voices would carry in the chambers of the Executive Council of the Federation (EXCOF). Some rained insults on her. A few asked her if she had weighed the risks of her presenting such a position paper.

There were also threats of sack from those who felt Akunyili should not continue to stay in council after submitting such a strong-worded memo.
Sunday Sun findings showed that the memorandum took the ministers by surprise and if the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Yayale Ahmed, had not had the presence of mind to ask for the copies already in the hands of the members, it would have been difficult to calm frayed nerves at the meeting.

There were 42 copies of the document with all of the members but when the ministers were told to return them, the SGF discovered that three copies were missing. It took another round of search and persuasion before the missing copies were retrieved.
According to one of the ministers sympathetic to Akunyili’s stand, “I salute Dora’s courage because it takes courage to look your boss in the eye and ask him to step down for his deputy. Many of us are also not comfortable with the way things have gone in the country these past two months, which is why we are supporting her.”

A source at the meeting also told Sunday Sun that the memo took the ministers by surprise.
“We all thought it was just another presentation from her ministry until she started reading. You should have seen the faces of some of the ministers. They shouted, hurled insults at her and some pointedly told her her days were numbered in the council. They asked her if she had weighed the risks of her action. It was really a hot session.

“The meeting ended formally around noon but when I sent one of my aides to the Villa around 4 o’clock later that day, he told me some of the rattled members were still cooped up in a meeting, trying to figure out their next line of action,” the source revealed.
After the meeting ended, ministers were seen standing in groups discussing the memo, most wearing frowns on their faces.
But another minister angrily told this reporter when asked if he thought Akunyili was sincere or grandstanding: “What does it matter now if she is grandstanding? She has boldly stood her ground. Let others also boldly step out and grandstand. All I know is that four Katsina boys cannot continue to hold this nation to ransom.”

Why I did not tell Jonathan - Akunyili
Getting Prof Akunyili to speak on why she seized the EXCOF by the jugular last Wednesday was like trying to squeeze water out of a stone. But after a lot of persuasion, the protagonist agreed to speak with Sunday Sun for a few minutes, with a promise to speak more elaborately on all the issues later.

What prompted the bombshell you dropped on the Executive Council of the Federation on Wednesday?
Let’s just say I got tired of the whole thing. It just got too much for my mind. I could no longer live with myself. I was not sleeping well. I was depressed. My husband thought it was malaria but I knew it was not. I went for tests and nothing was found. I simply knew I could not continue to live a lie. On Tuesday night, I could not sleep at all and I spent half the night praying. That was when I decided to do the memo. I wrote and typed it myself. I only told my Assistants and Special Adviser on Wednesday.

What was their reaction?
Naturally, they thought it was too loaded, too much. They wanted me to tone it down. They were worried about something happening to me but I was resolute. I told them ‘if I die, I die.’ I was not afraid. I know that God who protected me through all my battles in NAFDAC is still alive.

Did you tell the Vice President?
No, I did not tell the VP. I felt he would discourage me if I told him what I wanted to do. I did not tell anybody. It was just a burden I wanted to do something about. It was my burden, my decision. While I was praying on Tuesday night, I remembered one sermon given by one bishop. He said, all the time people were screaming ‘crucify him, crucify him’ at Jesus Christ, nobody spoke up for Jesus. If one person had had the courage to say ‘no, Jesus does not deserve to die,’ perhaps he would not have been crucified. Maybe if someone had mustered the courage to speak up for Jesus, the course of history would have changed. But no, everybody joined the multitude to do evil. Remembering that sermon was instructive. I had to stand even if I was standing alone.

Did you at any point in time try to reason with your colleagues in the cabinet, convince them to join your stand?
Oh yes, I did. About four weeks ago, I tried to talk to some ministers but I did not get any encouragement.

What was the reaction of the ministers when you presented that memo?
I’m sure you can imagine it. Everybody voiced his opinion. Tempers rose but I was not bothered. I am happy with myself. I feel good. I feel like a heavy load has been lifted off my chest. That night I slept well.

Now that you have submitted the memo at the council secretariat, what should we expect next?
I am hopeful that the letter transferring power to Dr Goodluck Jonathan would finally arrive so that the tension in the country can be doused. I also expect that when President Yar’Adua returns, he will take over. The VP cannot stop him from returning to his office. It is not possible. Let me also state clearly that nobody wants Mr President dead. No child of God will wish a fellow human being dead. I don’t want my boss to die. Only evil people want him to die. He will return. So all this tension in the country is unnecessary. We all know what is right and that is what we should do.
SportsAmodu Blasts His Critics by woye77(op): 2:40am On Feb 07, 2010
Moments before he was demoted to handle the home-based Super Eagles he so much vilified, Shaibu Amodu in an interview with Supersports, described all Nigerians who criticised him and the Super Eagles as “enemies of Nigeria and football”.

He said that instead of praising him and his technical crew for puling the Eagles out of the doldrums, they were being crucified by people who know nothing about football.

He gave his employers, the Nigeria Football Association, whose leadership had vowed to swim or sink with him, his caustic tongue when he called them betrayers for the thought of hiring a foreign coach despite meeting the semi final target they gave him for the Nations Cup.
According to Amodu, the Eagles were down after the disgraceful out at the 2008 Nations Cup in Ghana and “were ranked about 50 in the World but when we took over we brought the team to 22 in the world and yet people say we did badly.” That position changed to 15 last week after the bronze medal performance in Angola.

“All those who call us names saying we have not done well, are the enemies of Nigeria and football,” he told his interview on the television programme monitored in Lagos.

He said the talk about employing a foreign technical adviser for the Super Eagles first began like a rumour on the eve of their defeat of Benin Republic at the Nations Cup but the NFF officials doused it, claiming there was nothing of such.

“I didn’t believe them, may the players did because as far as I concerned there is no smoke without fire. Some days after, there was a meeting where they told us the need to hire someone to assist me. I felt betrayed because I didn’t tell them I needed somebody to assist me. It is me that should ask for an assistant and not them telling me I need an assistant,” an embittered Amodu told Supersports.

The Edo-born coach, who had said he would be willing to work with Stephen Keshi for the 2010 World Cup, could however, not be reached yesterday for his reaction on his demotion to the Super Eagles Team B.

RomanceMake These Mistakes, Miss A Partner by woye77(op): 2:27am On Feb 07, 2010
Bose, 34, a banker seemed to have lacked patience in the choice of a partner. ”I met Alex

when I was very desperate to take a partner to my father,” she reminisces. ”Alex told me he was a computer engineer, was trained abroad and wanted a wife. The first time we were introduced to each other, I didn‘t waste time and quickly got close to him.

”I was the first to call him the next day; he was delighted to hear my voice and invited me out. That week, I spent a night with him and succeeded in getting a proposal from him. I was happy! The following week, he bought me a ring and by the third week, we had sent our names to the registry.

”I was able to force him to meet my father and after 30 minutes, my father called me aside and said he sensed Alex was a fraud. I was annoyed. I made my father realise that Alex was a ‘been-to‘ and would not behave like a local Nigerian guy, who would be prostrating every second.

”On the 18th day of our registry filing, a woman came to my office and started calling me husband-snatcher! I was angry, called Alex and told him what was happening. He begged and said that the woman must have been insane. He was never married.

”That day, I went to his place after work, but he was nowhere to be found! His flat-mate was kind enough to reveal to me that his wife had discovered his hide-out and had come to cause a scene. When I finally got him on the phone, he confessed that he was married, had crisis with his wife, ran away from home, met me, liked me and was ready to marry me. So, what happened to our registry filing? He didn‘t turn up and I heard he had gone back to his wife.”

Anita was still single 12 years after graduation. Could this have been pride? ”The wrong ones are always coming,” the 36-year-old broadcaster answers. ”When I met Jerry, it was through a match-making website on the Internet. We didn‘t see each other for two months, but talked on the phone daily. He sounded nice, accommodating and caring.

”He worked in a law firm and at 38, he wanted a quick marriage. He was based in Kenya, but promised coming over to see me in Nigeria. I looked forward to seeing him and when he eventually arrived, I couldn‘t believe my eyes. He was 5ft 3in tall and was quite fat for his height.

”I was so foolish to have thought his physical look would be like his voice. He must have read the surprise on my face and explained that he was not a dwarf. Being a six-footer, I knew I would not marry a man like that and immediately told him so. That marked the end of that affair.”

In Pius‘ case, he had vowed never to date a lady with facial marks. ”Why should I? My friends would make me an object of mockery,” he says. This had prompted him to date many beautiful ladies, but he had never succeeded in marrying any of them.

”I am really particular about how a woman looks,” he says. ”She must be tall, fair-complexioned with no facial marks. There was a girl, Aina, who I dated for two months and almost decided on marrying her. She was very respectful, a seasoned cook and very submissive. I changed my mind about her when I noticed she had some tiny incisions on her face.

”Though they were fading away, I could not stand what my friends or relatives would say if I present her as my fiancée. I tactically jilted her and went for Roli, a pretty undergraduate. That was my undoing. I discovered that she was very promiscuous and wanted my money.

”Unfortunately, I had fallen in love with her and couldn‘t imagine jilting her. In six months, she has been a thorn in my flesh. I‘ve had to obtain various soft loans in the office to offset her bills at boutiques and highbrow restaurants.”

NFF keep Amodu

Shuaibu Amodu was on Friday demoted to the position of coach of the Super Eagles home-based team, after a stormy meeting of the NFF board.

Luis van Gaal, Guus Hiddink, Bruno Metsu, Peter Taylor and Ratomir Djukovic are the five shortlisted candidates to replace Amodu and take the Super Eagles to the World Cup.

The Federal Government, through the Presidential Task Force (PTF) and the Sports Ministry will foot the bills for the employment of the new Technical Adviser.

The NFF's Technical Committee have been directed to complete the process of screening the candidates by the end of February and turn in a shortlist of three.

Amodu, who qualified the Super Eagles for the World Cup, will now lead his assistants to raise and train a team of local players to qualify and compete at the 2011 African Nations Championships, a competition open only to players playing in the domestic leagues of their countries.

It was a meeting that was scheduled to be a single agendum meeting, to decide on Amodu's position as Super Eagles coach.

But Amodu's future as Nigeria coach took a back seat as members of the NFF Executive Committee first focused on impeachment proceedings against NFF President Sani Lulu Abdullahi.

Exco members, aggrieved at the way they were shabbily treated by the leadership in Angola, initiated impeachment proceedings.

The in-fighting lasted until late on Friday night. As at 9pm, the issue of national coach had not even come up for deliberation.

Eventually, the situation is said to have been resolved after certain concessions were made by the leadership, and the Amodu issue finally came up for discussion.

It was originally suggested that the coach be sent to Europe on a six-month refresher course, but that idea was jettisoned and he was put in charge of raising a team of local players.

CrimeBritish Couple Jailed For Trafficking Nigerian Girls by woye77(op): 5:03pm On Feb 05, 2010
A couple were jailed Thursday after running a prostitution ring from an old vicarage in Wales using girls trafficked from Nigeria.

Thomas Carroll, 48, an Irishman, and Shamiela Clark, 32, his South African wife, controlled their multimillion-pound business from a mobile phone “call centre” in Castlemartin, Pembrokeshire.

Among the prostitutes were six trafficked girls and young women, aged from 15 to 21, some of whom had been terrified into working for fear of breaking a “juju” oath they were forced to take during voodoo ceremonies in Nigeria.

Carroll was jailed for seven years, and Clark, a former prostitute, for three and a half years, at Cardiff crown court, after both admitted conspiracy to control prostitution for gain and conspiracy to money-launder.

Carroll’s daughter, Toma, 26, was imprisoned for two years after admitting laundering the profits which, in one year alone, totalled more than £800,000.

After the case, investigators said the evidence suggested that at the time of their arrest, the couple were in the process of setting up a similar operation in South Africa to coincide with the World Cup.

The couple ran more than 35 brothels, mainly in the Irish Republic, from the rented Welsh farmhouse to which they fled after coming to the attention of the gardaí.

The Nigerian women and girls, who were not trafficked by the defendants, were among prostitutes supplied to the ring. One girl rescued by police was just 14 when trafficked out of Nigeria, and 15 when placed in one of the Carroll brothels.

All came from poor family backgrounds, having lost one or both parents, and were promised a better life away from their remote, rural villages. One was told she could be a hairdresser, another that she would be put into further education.“Instead, they find themselves being issued with forged passports in different names and being taken to Dublin via various routes and find themselves in the hands of the Carroll family,” Mark Phillips, deputy director of the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca), which was involved in the operation, said after the case.

“The first time these girls know they are going into a life of prostitution is when they are bought items of clothing, dropped off at a flat, and get a phone call to say ‘expect a male customer and do what you are told.”

They worked 12 to 15 hours a day, were regularly moved from brothel to brothel, and supplied with “necessities” – condoms, creams and lingerie. Food was brought to them. The going rate was €160 (£140) for half an hour, but they had to pay their money into Toma Carroll’s bank account.

Of the 15 prostitutes caught in the police raids on Carroll’s brothels, some were from South America and Europe and willingly worked for him.But many of the trafficked women and girls lived in fear of juju oaths, made during “terrifying and humiliating” rituals they were forced into by traffickers.

One was forced to sleep in a coffin to “put the fear of death” in her. Menstrual blood was drawn into a padlock, locked, and thrown in the river to signify their lives were in the hands of the river goddess, said investigators.

Live chickens were killed and the victims made to eat the raw hearts. Fingernail clippings and pubic hair cuttings were taken, and retained, to “instill the fear of God in them” and show they could be “metaphysically” reached wherever they were. Often the girls were naked, and one was cut all over her body with blades, said investigators.

An important part of the oath was each was told they had to pay back, on average, £65,000 to their traffickers.

If they breached the oath, they would die, or their families back in Nigeria would die.

Investigations continue to track down those responsible for trafficking them out of Nigeria and those passing them through Europe to Ireland.

The defendants are said to have properties in South Africa, Bulgaria and Mozambique thought to be worth “millions
SportsAmodu Undergoes Knee Surgery by woye77(op): 4:46pm On Feb 05, 2010
As his future is being debated by the NFF executive committee in Abuja, Nigeria coach Shuaibu Amodu is recovering from knee surgery he did while in South Africa.

The under fire coach has been suffering from a knee problem for a while but did not have the time to go in for surgery.

However, when he stopped by in South Africa to visit with defender Yusuf Mohammed, the knee issue flared up and he decided to tell the doctors about it.

Amodu was promptly admitted and taken in for surgery, which went without incident.

The coach, who is expected to be fired Friday, is now back home and recuperating.
